A purpose-built acoustic blanket can absorb room reflections, and a tested model may also reduce sound transmission under specific laboratory conditions. Those are different jobs: an absorption rating does not tell you how much quieter the next room will be. For a low-cost trial, a heavy moving blanket may help tame echo, but there is no established sound-isolation rating or decibel reduction for an ordinary moving blanket in the evidence available here.
What does “soundproof blanket” mean?
The phrase can refer to a sound-absorbing blanket used to reduce reflections in a room, or a sound-barrier blanket intended to limit sound passing through an opening or assembly. Absorbing sound inside a room can make it feel less reverberant; it does not necessarily stop noise from reaching another room.
Two measures help distinguish those claims:
- NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) describes sound absorption. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) defines it as the arithmetic average of absorption coefficients at 250, 500, 1,000 and 2,000 Hz. It is not a room-to-room isolation score. See FHWA guidance on noise-barrier acoustics.
- Transmission loss (TL) describes how much sound energy is prevented from passing through a tested barrier. Results depend on frequency and the tested material and setup. OSHA explains that TL is measured in laboratory tests and characterizes the sample, not a whole room. See OSHA’s technical guidance on noise barriers.
When comparing products, look for the test method and frequency-band data that match the product’s intended use. A broad “soundproof” label, by itself, does not establish how a blanket will perform in your home.
What the published test data show
Acoustical Surfaces’ manufacturer data sheet for its BBC-EXT-R-2 reports STC 33 under ASTM E90/E413 and NRC 0.75 under ASTM C423. The sheet is dated approximately 2011 in the available indexing, so these are model-specific, manufacturer-published laboratory figures—not a current independent comparison or a prediction of household results. See the BBC-EXT-R-2 product data.

The same sheet reports the following frequency-band results:
| Frequency | Transmission loss | Absorption coefficient |
|---|---|---|
| 125 Hz | 14 dB | 0.45 |
| 250 Hz | 20 dB | 0.96 |
| 500 Hz | 32 dB | 0.87 |
| 1,000 Hz | 41 dB | 0.66 |
| 2,000 Hz | 42 dB | 0.47 |
| 4,000 Hz | 41 dB | 0.28 |
These are the manufacturer’s reported results for that product and test context. They are not decibels of noise reduction in a house, and the frequency values cannot be treated as universal blanket performance. Check the exact model, test method, mounting and intended application before making a comparison.

- Large Coverage: Each blanket measures 80 x 48 in / 2032 x 1219 mm. It provides wide coverage with fewer seams, ideal for covering standard doors and windows or handling large spaces where soundproofing, light blocking, and insulation are needed
- Easy Installation: Equipped with multiple metal grommets and woven straps, the acoustic blankets can be hung with hooks, screws, or curtain rods. Quick to set up and secure, it works as a flexible soundproof, blackout, or insulation barrier on walls, doors, and windows.
Can a blanket stop noise coming through a wall?
Not reliably on the strength of a blanket rating alone. A wall or room’s overall sound insulation depends on its complete construction and on sound reaching the receiver by direct and indirect paths. Open edges, gaps, placement and sound frequency also matter. OSHA notes that a partial barrier’s effectiveness depends on the sound field and placement; it is less effective when reverberant sound dominates what the receiver hears.
FHWA discusses acoustical blankets used as absorptive material within the airspace of a wall assembly. That application is not equivalent to hanging a blanket over an open wall or doorway, so an assembly result should not be transferred to a standalone household setup. FHWA’s noise-barrier guidance describes this distinction. For adjacent-room insulation, ISO 12354-1:2017 models performance from measured building-element data while accounting for direct and indirect transmission; ISO says the edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2023 and remains current. Purpose-built acoustic blanket or moving blanket?
| Option | What the available evidence supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose-built acoustic blanket | The BBC-EXT-R-2 data sheet reports model-specific laboratory absorption and transmission-loss figures. | It does not predict the noise change in a particular room, and no current price or retail availability is established here. |
| Heavy moving blanket | It can be tried as a low-cost way to reduce some room reflections or echo. | No primary test result here establishes an isolation rating or a decibel improvement; it should not be equated with a tested acoustic blanket. |
If the problem is room echo, trying a heavy moving blanket as a temporary absorptive treatment is a reasonable experiment. If the goal is to block noise between rooms, do not buy on the assumption that an ordinary moving blanket is a sound barrier. For persistent noise, an acoustical consultant can assess the sound paths and installation conditions that a blanket’s isolated test rating cannot describe.

How to assess a blanket before buying
- Match the evidence to the goal: seek absorption results such as NRC for room reflections, and transmission-loss data for a sound-blocking claim.
- Check the actual test method and frequency bands, not just a headline rating or “soundproof” description.
- Confirm the exact model and how it was mounted or used in the test; ratings are not interchangeable across blanket models or setups.
- Consider coverage, edges and gaps, as well as sound travelling around the blanket through other paths.
- Compare total cost and availability only after confirming that the tested application matches yours. A current multi-product price comparison is not established by the cited evidence.
