Best overall: the Sonos Arc Ultra is the strongest premium standalone choice; the Sonos Beam (Gen 2) is the best compact option; and the Samsung HW-S60D is the most appealing value-oriented all-in-one bar. If you want more integrated bass without adding a second cabinet, consider the Sony BRAVIA Theater Bar 9 or Yamaha TRUE X BAR 40A.
The phrase best soundbar without a separate subwoofer covers more than one design. Some bars rely on their own drivers and passive radiators, some have built-in woofers or subwoofer drivers, and some are sold as single bars but can be expanded later. The recommendations below separate those categories so you can choose the right compromise between bass, room size, dialogue, Dolby Atmos, installation complexity, and future upgrades.

What “without a subwoofer” really means
A soundbar without a separate subwoofer is not necessarily a soundbar with no bass hardware. There are three different product types in this category:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- True standalone bars: The bar produces all sound from its own drivers, passive radiators, and processing. The Sonos Beam (Gen 2), Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar, and Sennheiser AMBEO Soundbar Plus fit this interpretation.
- Bars with integrated bass drivers: These use built-in woofers or subwoofer drivers inside the bar. The Yamaha TRUE X BAR 40A has dual built-in subwoofers, while the Sony BRAVIA Theater Bar 9 uses built-in woofers and passive radiators.
- Expandable one-bar systems: These work perfectly well without a separate subwoofer but allow you to add one later. Sonos, Sony, Bose, Samsung, and Yamaha all offer expansion options for at least some of their bars.
That distinction matters. If you are avoiding a second cabinet because of limited floor space, any of these designs may work. If you specifically do not want a product containing integrated subwoofer drivers, focus on the first group.

1. Sonos Arc Ultra: best premium standalone soundbar
The Sonos Arc Ultra is the strongest premium choice if you want one bar with advanced spatial audio, music-streaming features, room correction, and more substantial bass potential than a compact bar usually provides. Sonos lists 14 drivers, including its Sound Motion woofer and upward-firing tweeters. It supports Dolby Atmos, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, HDMI eARC, Trueplay room correction, Speech Enhancement, and Night Sound.
It is a particularly good fit for a large living room or an open-plan space where a small bar may not fill the room comfortably. The Wi-Fi platform also makes it suitable for listeners who use a soundbar for music as well as television.

- Choose it for: premium one-bar sound, Atmos content, music streaming, and a system that can grow later.
- Important limitation: It is physically wide and expensive. A premium price does not remove the physical trade-off of asking one enclosure to handle both the main channels and deep bass.
- Expansion: A Sonos Sub and rear speakers can be added later, but neither is required for the Arc Ultra to operate as a standalone bar.
If you are shopping by category rather than by brand, the Arc Ultra is the clearest premium starting point for the best soundbar without a separate subwoofer.
2. Sony BRAVIA Theater Bar 9: best for compatible Sony TVs
The Sony BRAVIA Theater Bar 9, model HT-A9000, is a single-bar home-theater system with 13 speaker units. Sony documents quad woofers, passive radiators, side speakers, beam tweeters, and up-firing speakers. It supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X and can be used without buying Sony’s optional subwoofer or rear speakers.
The strongest reason to choose this model is integration with a compatible Sony BRAVIA television. Features such as Acoustic Center Sync and Voice Zoom are designed to work with compatible BRAVIA sets. Acoustic Center Sync can use the television as part of the center-channel arrangement, while Voice Zoom is intended to make spoken content easier to hear. Confirm compatibility with the exact TV model rather than assuming every BRAVIA television supports the same functions.
- Choose it for: Sony TV integration, wide virtual surround effects, and a premium movie setup that may expand later.
- Built-in bass: The bar uses quad woofers and passive radiators, so it does not depend on a separate bass cabinet for basic operation.
- Important limitation: Beamforming and reflected Atmos effects depend on room dimensions, ceiling surfaces, seating position, and content. They are not the same as having physically separated rear speakers.
3. Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar: best for dialogue and simple setup
The Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar is a good premium option for buyers who prioritize speech intelligibility and a relatively simple system. Bose lists nine total speakers, including two upward-firing speakers, along with Dolby Atmos, Bose TrueSpace processing, ADAPTiQ room calibration, Wi-Fi, voice control, and an AI Dialogue Mode.
Recommended Free Tools
AI Dialogue Mode is useful when voices are being masked by music or effects, but it should be treated as a processing feature rather than proof that the Bose is objectively clearer than every competing bar. Room placement, the source mix, listening volume, and the listener’s hearing all affect perceived dialogue.
- Choose it for: spoken television, films, a straightforward setup, and buyers already using Bose products.
- Standalone status: Bose sells the Smart Ultra Soundbar on its own. Bundles that include a bass module and surround speakers should not be confused with the performance of the single bar.
- Expansion: Bose offers optional bass and surround products if you later decide that the one-bar arrangement is not enough.
4. Sennheiser AMBEO Soundbar Plus: compact immersive alternative
The Sennheiser AMBEO Soundbar Plus is aimed at buyers who want immersive processing in one compact device. Sennheiser lists the AMBEO Sub as a separate accessory and sells the AMBEO Soundbar Mini and Soundbar Max as separate products. That product structure confirms that the Plus is sold as a standalone bar rather than as part of a mandatory bar-and-subwoofer package.
This is the right choice when the one-device form factor and immersive presentation matter more than building a conventional multi-box theater. It also gives you a path to add a dedicated bass module later.
Rank #2
- 110W Room-Filling Sound & 5.9" Bigger Subwoofer: Experience cinematic audio with 110W peak power and a 5.9-inch dedicated subwoofer. The larger cavity design delivers 2x deeper bass than standard built-in TV speakers, creating a true 2.1 channel surround sound experience for movies, music, and gaming.
- Latest Bluetooth 5.4 & One-Cable ARC: Equipped with the upgraded Bluetooth 5.4 chip for a stable, zero-latency connection up to 50ft. Simplify your setup with ARC—one cable connects the soundbar to your TV, allowing you to control the volume using your original TV remote.
- 3 Optimized EQ Modes: Movie, Music, News: Fine-tune your audio with 3 professional DSP-tuned modes. "Movie" enhances surround depth; "Music" balances highs and lows for high-quality clarity; "News" emphasizes vocals, ensuring every word is heard clearly without background interference.
- Versatile Connectivity for All Devices: More than just a TV speaker. Supports ARC, Optical, and AUX inputs. Seamlessly compatible with 4K TVs, PCs, Projectors, and Laptops, making it an ideal gift for tech enthusiasts and home theater setups.
- Ultra-Slim Industrial Design & Easy Setup: The sleek, low-profile soundbar fits perfectly under any TV or can be wall-mounted to save space. The streamlined architecture allows for a seamless connection to your devices, ensuring you go from unboxing to immersive sound in less than 10 minutes.
- Choose it for: a compact immersive-audio system and the option to add an AMBEO Sub later.
- Do not assume: The existence of a separate AMBEO Sub does not mean the bar requires it. Conversely, the one-bar form does not make it equivalent to a full system with a separate subwoofer and rear speakers.
- Evidence note: The documented product architecture supports its standalone status. A performance ranking against the other bars should be based on an attributable independent test, not on the product description alone.
5. Sonos Beam (Gen 2): best compact pick for small rooms
The Sonos Beam (Gen 2) is the most natural choice for a bedroom, apartment, office, or small-to-medium living room. Sonos lists one tweeter, four elliptical midwoofers, and three passive radiators in the bar. It supports Dolby Atmos, HDMI eARC, Wi-Fi, Trueplay, Speech Enhancement, and Night Sound. Sonos positions it for TVs up to 65 inches and smaller spaces.
Its approximately 25.6-inch width is easier to accommodate beneath a smaller television than the physically wider premium bars. That compact enclosure is also the reason it cannot deliver the same bass scale or room-filling output as a larger bar. Passive radiators can help the bar produce a fuller presentation, but they do not turn it into a separate low-frequency cabinet.
- Choose it for: limited room, limited wall space, Sonos multiroom use, and a clean one-bar installation.
- Use Night Sound thoughtfully: It can reduce the impact of loud effects when others are sleeping, but it is a listening-mode adjustment, not a substitute for more bass hardware.
- Expansion: A Sonos Sub and rear speakers are optional. Buy the Beam alone if your immediate priority is a simple setup.
If you plan to wall-mount it, check the mount’s compatibility with the Beam rather than assuming that any bracket designed for a soundbar will fit.
6. Samsung HW-S60D: best value-oriented all-in-one bar
The Samsung HW-S60D all-in-one soundbar is explicitly a 5.0-channel bar. In its U.S. specifications, Samsung states that no wireless subwoofer or rear speaker is included. The bar has a center speaker and side-firing speakers, plus Voice Enhance Mode, Active Voice Amplifier, SpaceFit Sound Pro, Adaptive Sound, HDMI eARC, Wi-Fi, AirPlay, Spotify Connect, Chromecast, and wireless Dolby Atmos.
That combination makes it attractive to Samsung TV owners and to buyers who want a single bar with more network and dialogue features than a basic television speaker. It is not a deep-bass-focused system, however. A 5.0-channel label describes the channel arrangement; it does not indicate the same low-frequency capability as a bar paired with a dedicated subwoofer.
- Choose it for: value, Samsung ecosystem integration, voice enhancement, and broad wireless playback options.
- Atmos expectation: Wireless Dolby Atmos support does not automatically produce the same result as a full surround system. Room shape, ceiling reflections, content, and seating position still matter.
- Expansion: Samsung lists the SWA-W510 subwoofer and SWA-9200S rear speakers as optional compatible accessories.
Because Samsung model suffixes and included equipment can vary by market, verify that the listing is the HW-S60D version intended for your country. The no-subwoofer and no-rear-speaker details above refer specifically to the U.S. specification described in the research.
7. Yamaha TRUE X BAR 40A: best if built-in subwoofer drivers are acceptable
The Yamaha TRUE X BAR 40A built-in subwoofer soundbar is the clearest answer for someone who wants more integrated bass hardware but does not want a separate cabinet on the floor. Yamaha describes it as an all-in-one Dolby Atmos soundbar with dual built-in subwoofers.
It supports HDMI eARC, optical input, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Alexa, and Clear Voice. Yamaha also offers optional TRUE X surround speakers and the TRUE X SUB 100. The external subwoofer is an upgrade, not a requirement.
- Choose it for: built-in bass, Atmos support, network playback, and a system that can later use portable TRUE X surround speakers.
- Category clarification: This model qualifies as “without a subwoofer” only if you mean without a separate external subwoofer. It contains integrated subwoofer drivers inside the bar.
- Placement: Do not enclose the bar in a cabinet or recess that blocks its front, side, or upward-firing elements. Follow Yamaha’s clearance and placement guidance for the planned installation.
How to choose the right one-bar system
If bass is your main concern
Prioritize documented built-in bass hardware rather than a marketing label such as “cinematic” or “immersive.” The Yamaha has dual built-in subwoofers. The Sony lists quad woofers and passive radiators. Sonos documents the Arc Ultra’s Sound Motion woofer and the Beam’s three passive radiators.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteEven with those features, a separate subwoofer generally has an advantage in deep-bass authority because it has a larger dedicated enclosure and does not have to share the bar with dialogue and other channels. If you want to keep floors clear in an apartment or renovated room, a larger one-piece bar is a compromise between bass performance and space.
Rank #3
- Crystal Voice Dialogue Enhancement: Tired of muffled movie dialogue? The 2 full-range drivers are specifically tuned to clarify and elevate vocals, ensuring you never miss a crucial whisper or command. Combined with the powerful subwoofer, it transforms flat TV sound into a spatially immersive audio experience that puts you in the center of the action
- Game with Immersive RGB Sync: Ultra-low latency audio ensures sound and on-screen action are perfectly in sync. The built-in RGB lighting dynamically reacts to in-game explosions, enemy footsteps, and your music, creating a visually stunning and fully immersive gaming atmosphere that elevates every victory
- Room-Filling Bass with Wired Subwoofer: Feel the impact. It delivers powerful, distortion-free bass that rumbles through your room. Whether it's a movie explosion, a deep musical beat, or a racing engine, experience rich low-end energy that adds dramatic depth and physical presence to all your entertainment
- Universal Bluetooth & Multiple Connections: Effortlessly stream music/podcasts from your phone, tablet, or laptop via stable Bluetooth. With HDMI ARC, Optical, AUX, and USB inputs, it seamlessly connects to your TV, PC and more. One soundbar, total compatibility
- Quick Setup, Instant Enjoyment: Ditch complex AV systems. Get cinema-quality sound in minutes with a simple, single-cable connection. The sleek, low-profile design fits perfectly under most TVs or monitors without blocking the screen. Plug it in, press play, and be amazed
If dialogue is the priority
Look for a dedicated center channel or a documented speech mode. Samsung lists a center speaker, Voice Enhance Mode, and Active Voice Amplifier. Bose offers AI Dialogue Mode. Sonos offers Speech Enhancement, and Yamaha offers Clear Voice.
These are useful controls, not independent proof that one bar is universally clearer. If possible, test dialogue at the volume you normally use and with the types of programs you watch most. A room with hard floors and reflective walls may also make effects seem louder without making voices easier to understand.
If you want Dolby Atmos
Every model on this list advertises Dolby Atmos-related support, although the exact implementation differs. Height and surround impressions may come from upward-firing speakers, side-firing speakers, beamforming, or virtual processing.
For reflected height effects, a reasonably reflective ceiling and an unobstructed path from the upward-firing drivers can matter. A very high, angled, textured, or acoustically treated ceiling may produce a different result from a standard flat ceiling. Optional rear speakers can improve envelopment, but then the system no longer represents a one-bar-only setup.
If you live in an apartment or have a small room
Compact dimensions, moderate-volume performance, and a low-volume mode matter more than maximum output. The Sonos Beam (Gen 2) is the most obvious pick from this list. Samsung’s HW-S60D is another practical compact/value comparison, while Bose’s catalog also includes the approximately 27.34-inch Smart Soundbar and approximately 23.38-inch Bose TV Speaker for buyers considering smaller alternatives. Those Bose models are not ranked above because the supplied product evidence is less detailed than it is for the Smart Ultra.
If you may expand later
Choose the ecosystem before buying accessories. Sonos supports optional Sub products and rear speakers. Sony offers optional Theatre Sub and rear products. Samsung lists the SWA-W510 and SWA-9200S. Yamaha supports the TRUE X SUB 100 and TRUE X portable surround speakers. Bose sells bass-module and surround-speaker bundles.
A future upgrade is useful only if the compatible accessories remain available in your market and you are comfortable with the brand’s connection and app requirements. A bar that is slightly less ambitious but easy to expand may be better for a staged renovation than a model with no compatible upgrade path.
Installation advice for a remodel or wall-mounted TV
Soundbar placement is worth planning before drywall, millwork, or a recessed TV niche is finished. A one-bar system is simpler than a full theater, but it still needs power, a signal cable, ventilation, and unobstructed drivers.
- Measure the bar and the TV wall. The Arc Ultra and Bar 9 are physically wide premium products; the Beam is approximately 25.6 inches wide. Do not size a recess from the TV width alone. Allow for the soundbar’s actual width, height, depth, mounting hardware, and cable bend radius.
- Keep the bar centered beneath the screen. A centered position usually gives the dialogue channel the most natural relationship to the picture. Avoid placing it behind the TV or inside a deep cabinet.
- Protect upward-firing speakers. Bars such as the Arc Ultra, Bose Smart Ultra, Sony Bar 9, and Yamaha TRUE X BAR 40A use upward-firing or reflected-sound techniques. A shelf directly above the bar, a low soffit, or a tight recess can interfere with those effects.
- Plan the HDMI route. The preferred connection for models that support it is the TV’s HDMI eARC port to the soundbar’s HDMI eARC port. If the TV has only HDMI ARC, use the ARC connection and check which audio formats the television can pass through. Optical is a useful fallback when ARC is unavailable, but it offers less control and format flexibility than eARC.
- Plan power safely. Provide a code-compliant receptacle near the planned bar location. Do not bury an ordinary extension cord in a wall. Use listed in-wall-rated cable or conduit for low-voltage runs where required, and have mains-voltage work completed according to local electrical code.
- Use a compatible bracket. If the bar is going on the wall, choose a model-specific or clearly compatible soundbar wall mount. Follow the manufacturer’s mounting instructions and install into suitable structure or approved blocking where the instructions require it. Check that the bracket does not cover speakers, microphones, vents, or control surfaces.
- Calibrate after the room is finished. Run the available room-correction process after flooring, furniture, curtains, and wall treatments are in place. Sonos uses Trueplay, Bose uses ADAPTiQ, and Samsung offers SpaceFit Sound Pro. Calibration performed before the room is complete may not reflect the final acoustics.
Connection and setup checklist
- Confirm that the television has an HDMI ARC or eARC port and identify its exact label before closing the wall.
- Connect the soundbar to the TV’s ARC/eARC port, not an ordinary HDMI input.
- In the TV’s sound menu, select an output label such as HDMI ARC, HDMI eARC, Receiver, or External speaker. Menu names differ by brand.
- Set digital audio output to a mode such as Auto, Pass-through, or Bitstream when available, then verify that the setting does not disable TV-app audio.
- Enable HDMI-CEC if you want the TV remote to control power and volume. Different manufacturers use different names for CEC.
- Run the bar’s room calibration and dialogue settings only after the bar is in its final location.
- Play a familiar film scene and a dialogue-heavy program. Check that voices are centered, the TV remote changes the bar’s volume, and the sound does not disappear when switching between the TV tuner, built-in apps, and external sources.
What you give up by skipping a separate subwoofer
The benefit is obvious: less floor clutter, fewer cables, easier furniture placement, and a cleaner wall installation. A single bar is also less likely to create a placement problem in a small living room or apartment.
The trade-off is usually deep-bass headroom. A separate subwoofer can move more air from a dedicated enclosure and can be positioned independently from the television. That typically gives explosions, music kick drums, and low-frequency effects more authority at higher volumes. A standalone bar can still sound much fuller than built-in TV speakers, but it should not be expected to reproduce the lowest effects with the same scale as a bar-and-subwoofer system.

- Bring the power: Fill your whole room with sound. An impressive 300W of total system power puts you in control. Your movies and music have never sounded so good.
- Surround yourself with sound: JBL Surround Sound instantly brings movies, sports and music to life. Upgrade to an immersive sound experience for your TV without any extra wires or speakers.
- All about the bass: Why just listen to the bass when you can experience it. The 6.5’’ wireless subwoofer delivers deep, thrilling sound.
- Visit the movies, from your sofa: Get the popcorn ready. Built-in Dolby Digital gives you an authentic cinematic experience in your home.
- Stream it all: Not in the mood for a film. No problem. With the JBL Bar 2.1 Deep Bass, you can also enjoy wireless music streaming via Bluetooth from your mobile or tablet.
If you share walls or need to keep nighttime listening controlled, the limitation may be an advantage. Less extreme bass can be easier to live with, while Night Sound, voice modes, or moderate-volume settings can reduce disturbance.

The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do soundbars without separate subwoofers have built-in bass drivers?
Yes. A standalone soundbar uses its own drivers, passive radiators, and audio processing to produce the full range of sound. It can be a major improvement over built-in TV speakers, but it generally will not deliver the same deep-bass authority as a dedicated bar-and-subwoofer system.
Which soundbar without a subwoofer has the deepest bass?
Some do and some do not. The Yamaha TRUE X BAR 40A has dual built-in subwoofers, the Sony BRAVIA Theater Bar 9 lists quad woofers and passive radiators, and the Sonos Arc Ultra has a Sound Motion woofer. Other standalone bars rely on their own conventional drivers, passive radiators, and processing without a separate bass module.
Can I add a subwoofer later to a standalone soundbar?
For the most integrated bass hardware, look first at the Yamaha TRUE X BAR 40A and Sony BRAVIA Theater Bar 9, followed by larger premium bars such as the Sonos Arc Ultra. This is a design-based recommendation, not a substitute for independent measurements in your room.
Will Dolby Atmos work from a soundbar without rear speakers?
Often, yes, but compatibility is brand- and model-specific. Sonos, Sony, Bose, Samsung, Sennheiser, and Yamaha all offer optional bass or surround products for at least some of the models discussed here. Confirm the exact compatible accessory before buying, and remember that the original bar remains usable without it.

Yes, if the soundbar and source support Dolby Atmos. A single bar creates height and surround impressions through upward-firing speakers, side-firing speakers, beamforming, or virtual processing. The result depends heavily on the room, ceiling, seating position, and content, and it will not reproduce the same separation as physically placed rear speakers.

Should I wall-mount a soundbar below a wall-mounted TV?
Use HDMI eARC when both the TV and soundbar support it. It provides the broadest connection path for modern TV audio and allows compatible control features through HDMI-CEC. Optical is a practical fallback, but it generally provides less format and control flexibility.
Are soundbar prices included in this guide?
Usually, placing it centered below the TV is the most natural arrangement, provided the mount does not block speakers or microphones. Upward-firing models need clear space above them, so avoid a tight recess, cabinet, or soffit that could interfere with reflected Atmos effects.
Why are Bose Smart Soundbar and Bose TV Speaker mentioned but not ranked?
No. Retail prices and promotions change frequently, and availability and included accessories can vary by country. Check the current listing for the exact model and regional suffix before purchasing.

Does a 5.0-channel soundbar have a subwoofer?
They are compact Bose alternatives, with catalog widths of approximately 27.34 inches and 23.38 inches respectively. The main ranking focuses on models with more complete documented evidence in the supplied research, especially for bass architecture, Atmos, calibration, and expansion.
How should a construction or remodeling project prepare for a soundbar?
Not necessarily. The Samsung HW-S60D is identified as a 5.0-channel all-in-one bar with no wireless subwoofer included in its U.S. specification. The channel label describes the bar’s channel arrangement, not the presence of a separate bass cabinet.
Are these recommendations based on hands-on testing?
Plan a code-compliant power location, an HDMI eARC cable route, enough clearance for the bar’s width and depth, and suitable structure for any wall bracket. Keep low-voltage wiring in approved cable or conduit as required locally, and do not bury ordinary extension cords in the wall.
Can a separate subwoofer be hidden in a cabinet?
No. They are based on documented product architecture, features, compatibility, standalone status, and intended use. Independent testing should be checked separately for the exact model and methodology before making a performance claim.
What does wireless subwoofer mean?
A subwoofer still needs suitable ventilation, power, and acoustic space, and enclosing it can create vibration and sound problems. If the goal is to avoid a visible second cabinet, a one-bar model with integrated bass may be simpler, but follow the manufacturer’s placement instructions rather than placing any speaker in a sealed cabinet by default.
Can I use Bluetooth instead of HDMI eARC?
It usually means the audio signal is sent wirelessly from the soundbar, not that the subwoofer is cable-free. The separate unit normally still requires its own power outlet and floor space. That is why a soundbar with an optional wireless subwoofer still does not meet the needs of someone avoiding a second cabinet.
What should I check before buying a soundbar for a recessed TV niche?
Bluetooth can be convenient for compatible music sources, but it is not the preferred TV connection when HDMI eARC is available. HDMI provides better television integration and supports the soundbar’s intended TV-audio features more reliably.
The Bottom Line
The Sonos Arc Ultra is the best premium standalone choice, while the Sonos Beam (Gen 2) is the most practical compact option and the Samsung HW-S60D is the value-oriented pick. Choose the Yamaha TRUE X BAR 40A if integrated subwoofer drivers are acceptable; choose the Sony Bar 9 or Bose Smart Ultra for their respective TV-integration and dialogue strengths. Every one-bar design trades some deep-bass authority for less clutter, so plan placement, eARC wiring, power, and wall mounting before the room is finished.
