It is not a universal winner: check your wiring and equipment first, then choose based on sensor needs, smart-home platform and how you prefer to manage schedules.
How to choose a smart thermostat for winter
Start with system compatibility, not the app or the advertised savings. Thermostats must match your heating and cooling equipment, wiring and any accessories. After that, compare how each model handles room temperatures, schedules and the smart-home services you use.
- Check your HVAC system and wiring. Use the manufacturer’s compatibility checker for your exact setup. Heat pumps, multistage equipment, fans and accessories can affect compatibility and power requirements.
- Decide whether remote room sensing matters. A thermostat measures conditions where it is installed; a sensor in another room can help you monitor a colder or warmer area and inform the system’s temperature control.
- Choose the ecosystem and setup app. Confirm that the thermostat works with the voice assistant or smart-home platform you use. Matter support does not necessarily eliminate the need for the manufacturer’s setup app.
- Compare scheduling and ongoing costs. Consider learning schedules, away behavior and whether features you want require a subscription.
- Check current local price and incentives. Prices and utility rebates vary by location and date; verify eligibility with the retailer and your utility before buying.
Smart thermostat options to consider
| Model | Best fit | What stands out | Check before buying |

| ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium | Remote sensing and broad smart-home integration | ecobee lists Apple Home, Alexa, Google Assistant and Samsung SmartThings support, and includes a SmartSensor. | Check system compatibility and whether desired security features require a subscription. Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen): best for learning schedules and room monitoring
Google says the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) works with most 24V systems and supports a range of heating, cooling, heat-pump, fan, humidifier, dehumidifier and ventilation configurations. That broad support does not guarantee compatibility with a particular home: check the exact wires and equipment using Google’s compatibility and wiring information before purchase.

- Save Up to 26% on your energy bills: ENERGY STAR certified. Automatically adjusts your temperature based on occupancy. Compared to a hold of 72°F
- Manage hot or cold spots in your home: The included SmartSensor ($50 dollar value) detects which rooms you're actually using and adjusts temperature there, instead of relying on one reading from the hallway to provide whole-home comfort, room by room.
- See and talk to visitors from your thermostat: Stream a live view of your front door and use two-way talk to answer visitors directly from your Smart Thermostat Premium with an ecobee Smart Doorbell Camera.
- Compatible with 95% of HVAC systems: Use the Compatibility Checker on the ecobee support page to confirm your HVAC system works at ecobee.com/compatibility/thermostat
- Easy DIY installation right out of the box: Includes the Power Extender Kit (PEK) for homes without a C-wire, a Trim Kit for a clean finished look, and everything needed for your easy install. Enjoy added peace of mind with an industry-leading 3-year warranty that helps protect your purchase.
The thermostat is Matter-certified, but Google Home is required for initial setup. Its included Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd gen) lets you monitor a room away from the thermostat; Google says the system can use up to six sensors. Additional sensors are optional. This can help address temperature differences between rooms, though sensing alone does not fix an insulation, airflow or equipment problem.
Check C-wire requirements before installation
Google says most installations do not need a C wire. Its technical documentation says fewer than 1% of Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) installations require a C wire or Nest Power Connector. If your wiring or system falls into that limited group, confirm the correct power solution before installing; unusual equipment is a good reason to consult an installer.

- Comfort where you need it most: SmartSensor detects which rooms are occupied and shares temperature readings with your ecobee Smart Thermostat from up to 60 feet away—even through walls and floors—so your home adjusts for the rooms you actually use, not just the hallway.
- Bedroom comfort: Place a SmartSensor in your bedroom, and your thermostat will prioritize that room's temperature overnight instead of relying on one reading from elsewhere in the house.

- Your home’s comfort at your fingertips: Get a complete view of your home’s temperature and occupancy, then adjust settings room by room from the ecobee app—whether you’re on the couch or away.
- Flexible placement with effortless setup: Everything you need is included in the box. Simply place your SmartSensor on a stand or mount it to the wall, then connect it to your ecobee thermostat in the app. No wiring, no tools, and no professional installation required.
Availability is regional
TechRadar reports that the 4th-generation Nest Learning Thermostat is available only in the US and Canada, and that Google announced in April 2025 it would not sell this or future Nest thermostats in Europe. Treat that as time-sensitive reporting rather than a guarantee of current availability; check local retailers and Google’s regional store.
How the alternatives differ
ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium
Choose the Premium if its included SmartSensor and listed integrations suit your home. ecobee names Apple Home, Alexa, Google Assistant and Samsung SmartThings among its supported platforms. Verify compatibility for your specific HVAC system before buying, just as you would with Nest.

ecobee says its thermostats can save up to 26% on heating and cooling costs compared with holding a temperature of 72°F (22°C). That figure comes from an internal analysis of North American customers conducted in April 2021; ecobee says results vary with energy use and location. Its stated annual savings of up to $284 USD or $388 CAD are calculations based on average heating and cooling energy costs multiplied by that savings claim, not universal measured outcomes. Some security features require a subscription.
ecobee Smart Thermostat Essential
The Essential is ecobee’s lower-cost option in its product comparison, and Tom’s Guide also identifies it as a budget alternative. Compare its current feature set and price with the Premium, then check the manufacturer’s compatibility information for your equipment.

Smart thermostats can make schedules easier to manage, but projected savings depend on the home, usage, location and comparison baseline. Google’s help page says independent UK studies found Nest Thermostats combined with Seasonal Savings saved the average user 10% on heating bills over the winter season. That is a UK claim tied to Seasonal Savings, not a promise for every Nest owner or a comparison across the products in this guide.

- Save money and energy - After purchase, Amazon will send you an email with details about home thermostat rebates that may be available from energy providers in your area.
- Save energy - According to EPA estimates, ENERGY STAR certified thermostats save an average of $90 on yearly energy bills.

The same Google page attributes to the US Department of Energy the statement that heating and cooling account for about half of energy use in the average home, limited to the US and Canada. A household’s actual share varies. Treat both energy-use context and product savings figures as reasons to compare your own circumstances, not as a forecast of your bill.
Check for local rebates
Rebates depend on the utility, location, model and offer dates. For example, a 2026 PSEG Long Island document lists eligible ENERGY STAR smart thermostats and a rebate of up to $100. That offer is not universal; check the PSEG Long Island eligibility document and your own utility’s current terms before relying on a rebate.
