Best Smart Security Systems of 2022: Smart Protection (Historical Guide)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SimpliSafe was the best overall pick in the original 2022 roundup, while Abode led for smart-home integration, Cove for DIY flexibility, Blink Outdoor for exterior video, and Ring Alarm for budget-conscious buyers. Those recommendations describe products and prices available in 2022—not necessarily the best systems in 2026.

This guide preserves the original rankings while explaining what each system was designed to do, where its limits mattered, and what to verify before buying a modern alarm or camera system. Current product generations, subscription tiers, prices, integrations, and privacy policies can change.

Best budget system Ring Alarm 5-Piece Kit Ring and Alexa households seeking a low-cost entry point Alarm system with camera ecosystem Many advanced features depend on subscriptions

These are editorial categories, not universal rankings. The right choice depends on the number of doors and windows, whether you need professional dispatch, the quality of your Wi-Fi, your tolerance for monthly fees, and the smart-home devices you already own.

What counts as a smart security system?

A smart security system usually combines four layers:

  • Alarm hardware: A base station or hub, keypad, entry sensors, motion sensors, glass-break sensors, panic buttons, and optional smoke, carbon-monoxide, water, or freeze sensors.
  • Video hardware: Indoor and outdoor cameras, video doorbells, and floodlight cameras.
  • Service features: Self-monitoring, cloud video storage, professional monitoring, emergency dispatch, cellular backup, and sometimes local recording.
  • Smart-home functions: Voice control and automations involving lights, locks, thermostats, routines, and other connected devices.

The distinction between an alarm and a camera matters. A camera may detect movement and send an app notification, but it may not have a keypad, entry sensors, a siren, battery-backed communications, or a professional monitoring center. Conversely, an alarm system may protect doors and windows without continuously recording video.

Alarm sensors

Contact sensors detect an opened door or window. Motion sensors cover rooms and passageways, while glass-break sensors listen for the sound pattern of breaking glass. Environmental sensors can warn about smoke, carbon monoxide, flooding, or freezing temperatures. Count the points that actually need protection before buying a starter kit; a five-piece kit may be insufficient for a home with several exterior doors, a garage, and many accessible windows.

Connectivity and backup

Most systems use Wi-Fi for app access or cameras, Bluetooth during setup, and a proprietary wireless link between sensors and the hub. Some alarm hubs also use cellular backup. That backup can help an alarm communicate when home internet is unavailable, but it does not automatically keep Wi-Fi cameras recording or make every app function work offline.

Best overall in 2022: SimpliSafe

The original guide named the SimpliSafe Home Security System its best overall choice. It was aimed at beginners who wanted a traditional alarm system without a complicated installation.

What the 2022 package included

The described package included a base station, keypad, four entry sensors, and a motion sensor. SimpliSafe also offered add-on equipment, allowing owners to expand coverage with additional sensors and environmental protection.

Why it made sense

  • DIY setup was designed to be fast and did not require power tools or drilling for the described equipment.
  • It provided a more complete alarm experience than a camera-only kit.
  • Professional monitoring was optional rather than mandatory.
  • The system worked with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant for supported functions.

That combination made SimpliSafe particularly suitable for a first-time buyer, renter, or homeowner who wanted door and motion protection without building a larger smart-home platform.

The trade-off

The 2022 coverage described the system as incompatible with non-SimpliSafe equipment. That closed ecosystem can simplify setup, but it is a disadvantage if you already own third-party sensors, locks, cameras, or automation devices and want one system to coordinate everything.

“Easy setup” is also conditional. A large house, detached garage, concrete walls, metal construction, or a weak wireless signal can require repositioning or an extender. Test every sensor from its intended location rather than assuming that a successful installation near the hub proves adequate coverage throughout the property.

Current-plan warning

Do not reuse 2022 monitoring prices or plan names. SimpliSafe’s current support information lists updated service tiers, including a Pro Plus plan shown at $79.99 per month on a page updated June 24, 2026. Check the current SimpliSafe service-plan page before purchasing. A current price is not evidence of what the company charged in 2022.

Choose SimpliSafe if: you want a straightforward DIY alarm and do not need broad third-party compatibility.

Best for smart-home integration in 2022: Abode

The 2022 guide selected the Abode Smart Security Kit for smart-home integration. The described kit included a hub, motion sensor, mini door sensor, and key fob.

Why it stood out

Abode was positioned for users who wanted security events to participate in broader home automations. The system supported integrations involving lighting and thermostats and offered IFTTT macros. For example, an alarm state might be used as a trigger for a lighting routine, or a home mode could coordinate multiple devices.

This made Abode a better fit for a technically confident homeowner who already owned compatible smart-home equipment. It was less about buying an isolated alarm and more about connecting security to the routines already running in the home.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trade-off

Open integration creates additional work. Compatibility can vary by device, platform, firmware, subscription tier, and the exact automation function. “Works with Alexa,” “works with Google,” or “supports IFTTT” does not necessarily mean that every device can arm the alarm, disarm it, trigger a routine, or expose the same status information.

Security-critical functions may also be restricted intentionally. A voice assistant may report status or control a limited mode without being allowed to disarm the alarm through an unauthenticated voice request. Verify the specific behavior you need on the official Abode site before designing an automation around it.

The 2022 article also warned that some monitoring packages could be expensive. Current Abode pricing and plan features are not stated here because they require a date-specific check.

Choose Abode if: lights, locks, thermostats, and custom automations are central to your security plan.

Skip it if: you want the least complicated setup or do not want to troubleshoot device compatibility.

Best DIY system in 2022: Cove

The original roundup chose the Cove 8-Piece Home Alarm Security System as its best DIY system.

What the described kit included

  • Touchscreen panel
  • Three door or window sensors
  • One motion detector
  • One flood/freeze sensor
  • Two key remotes
  • Yard sign

That equipment made Cove notable for buyers who wanted more than basic intrusion detection from the initial package. The flood/freeze sensor was especially relevant for basements, utility rooms, vacant properties, and homes where water damage could be costly.

Why it made sense

Cove was presented as expandable, with no-contract monitoring and a money-back guarantee. That combination appealed to renters and homeowners who wanted to purchase equipment, avoid a long service commitment, and add protection gradually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trade-off

The 2022 guide indicated that setup could take somewhat longer than competing DIY systems. That is not necessarily a flaw—careful placement improves reliability—but it means “DIY” should not be interpreted as “instant.” Plan sensor locations, test wireless range, and allow time to configure alerts and emergency contacts.

Current Cove equipment, monitoring prices, warranty terms, and availability should be confirmed directly at Cove’s official site. No current numbers are stated here.

Choose Cove if: no-contract positioning, a touchscreen panel, environmental sensing, and gradual expansion matter most.

Skip it if: you need a camera-first ecosystem or the broadest possible third-party integration.

Best outdoor option in 2022: Blink Outdoor

The original article selected a three-camera Blink Outdoor kit for exterior monitoring. It highlighted wireless operation, weather resistance, HD video, motion detection, Alexa and Google Assistant integration, and a claimed battery life of up to two years under stated conditions.

What Blink is good at

Blink Outdoor was a practical choice for adding relatively inexpensive video coverage to entrances, driveways, patios, or other exterior areas. Battery operation can reduce wiring work, which is useful when running power to an outdoor camera would require construction or electrical work.

Optional cloud storage through a Blink Subscription Plan was part of the described offering. Confirm current storage choices, retention periods, and hardware at Blink’s official site.

Why it is not a complete alarm system

Blink Outdoor does not substitute for an alarm platform simply because it detects motion. The described camera kit lacks the conventional alarm components a homeowner may expect: entry sensors, a keypad, a dedicated alarm siren, and professional alarm monitoring.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Battery claims should also be treated as estimates. Actual duration varies with motion frequency, temperature, recording settings, Wi-Fi conditions, live viewing, and other usage. A camera aimed at a busy sidewalk may consume batteries much faster than one watching a quiet backyard.

Choose Blink Outdoor if: your primary need is affordable exterior video and you do not need a whole-home alarm.

Skip it if: you need professional dispatch, window and door sensors, or one unified alarm system.

Best budget system in 2022: Ring Alarm

The 2022 roundup named the Ring Alarm 5-Piece Kit its budget pick. The described kit included a base station, keypad, contact sensor, motion detector, and range extender.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it appealed to budget buyers

Ring emphasized straightforward setup, mobile control, smart-home integration, and optional 24/7 monitoring. It was especially logical for households already using Ring cameras or Alexa because those products could be managed within a familiar ecosystem.

The included range extender was useful in principle, but coverage still depends on the layout and construction of the home. A large property, basement, detached garage, or thick masonry walls may require additional planning and equipment.

Subscription dependence

The entry hardware price is only part of the cost. Advanced camera storage, professional monitoring, and other features may require a paid Ring plan. “No contract” or low-cost hardware does not mean that ownership has no recurring expense.

Current Ring products and prices

Ring’s lineup is different from the 2022 description. On official pages checked in August 2026, Ring listed a 5-piece Alarm Security Kit at $199.99, an 8-piece kit at $249.99, and an Alarm Pro 8-piece kit at $299.99. Other official pages displayed promotional prices, so these figures should be treated as date-stamped signals rather than permanent prices. See Ring’s home-security page and Ring’s current kit listings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ring’s current plan page lists:

  • Ring Solo: $4.99 per month
  • Ring Multi: $9.99 per month
  • Ring Pro: $19.99 per month
  • Virtual Security Guard: $99 per month

Ring identifies professional monitoring as included with Ring Pro, but eligibility, local fees, permits, jurisdictional rules, and other restrictions may apply. Confirm availability for the specific U.S. address at Ring’s plan page.

Virtual Security Guard should not be confused with ordinary alarm monitoring. Ring describes it as a separate service involving live agents for eligible camera events; professional alarm monitoring generally reacts to alarm events rather than continuously watching every camera.

Choose Ring Alarm if: you already use Ring or Alexa and want a lower-cost entry into an expandable alarm ecosystem.

Skip it if: you want a vendor-neutral system, strongly prioritize privacy, or expect all important functions to work without a subscription.

Calculate the real first-year cost

Compare systems using the same coverage rather than comparing starter-kit labels. A useful formula is:

Total first-year cost = hardware + installation + 12 months of monitoring or storage + required accessories.

Include the equipment needed for your actual property:

  • Additional contact sensors for every exterior door and vulnerable window
  • Motion sensors for hallways and open areas
  • Range extenders for garages, basements, detached structures, or large homes
  • Outdoor cameras, mounts, power supplies, or replacement batteries
  • Smoke, carbon-monoxide, water, freeze, or glass-break sensors
  • Cloud storage or continuous-recording plans
  • Professional installation, if desired or required
  • Alarm permits, local fees, and possible false-alarm charges

Compare the cost of self-monitoring with the cost of professional monitoring, then identify which features disappear when the subscription ends. A low hardware price can become expensive if cloud recording, cellular backup, or dispatch requires a recurring plan.

Questions to answer before buying

Coverage

  • How many exterior doors, windows, garages, and detached structures need protection?
  • Does the starter kit include enough contact sensors?
  • Can the hub support additional sensors without replacement?
  • Are outdoor cameras included, or are they separate products?
  • Are smoke, CO, flood, freeze, and glass-break sensors available?
  • Will the local siren function if internet service fails?

Monitoring

  • Can the system be self-monitored without a subscription?
  • Which app, recording, cellular, and automation features require payment?
  • Does professional monitoring contact you first?
  • What type of alarm can trigger police, fire, or medical dispatch?
  • Is cellular backup included, and how long does the base station battery last?
  • Is service available at your apartment, business, commercially zoned address, or location outside the United States?

Cameras and storage

  • Is video stored locally, in the cloud, or both?
  • How long are event clips retained?
  • Can you download recordings?
  • Does continuous recording cost extra?
  • Are person, package, vehicle, and animal alerts supported?
  • Does the camera record without a subscription?

Privacy and account security

  • Is two-factor authentication available?
  • Can shared users be limited by role?
  • Can you create privacy zones or disable recording in specific areas?
  • Can you delete stored footage?
  • How does the vendor describe encryption, retention, and requests for recordings?
  • What happens if the company changes its plans, removes an integration, or discontinues an older hub?

Reliability, outages, and common failure modes

Internet outage

A Wi-Fi camera may stop uploading video or sending remote alerts when home internet fails. An alarm with cellular backup may continue communicating, but this depends on the hardware, plan, cellular coverage, and battery state. Verify whether the siren works locally, whether sensors remain active, whether cameras record locally, and whether app control is unavailable.

Power outage

A battery-backed alarm hub may continue detecting and sounding an alarm while the router, cameras, or Wi-Fi access point shut down. A UPS can keep networking equipment running for a period of time, but it does not replace cellular backup or guarantee that cameras will remain operational.

False alarms

Motion sensors can react to pets, HVAC airflow, sunlight, insects, or poor positioning. Camera-based detection can misclassify people, animals, packages, shadows, or passing traffic. Reduce problems by:

  1. Setting detection zones and pet sensitivity carefully.
  2. Avoiding direct views of windows, heat sources, vents, and reflective surfaces.
  3. Testing the system repeatedly before enabling professional dispatch.
  4. Updating emergency contacts and learning local false-alarm rules.

Weak wireless coverage

Test every sensor in its final position, especially in basements, garages, outbuildings, and rooms separated by concrete or metal. A range extender may be necessary even when the hub works reliably in the main living area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Renters and apartment residents

Favor no-drill or adhesive installation, no long-term contract, easy removal, and the ability to transfer equipment to a new address. In apartments and shared buildings, check lease and building rules before pointing a camera at a hallway, neighbor’s property, sidewalk, or shared entrance. Local privacy laws may also apply.

What changed after the 2022 recommendations?

The original article is useful as a snapshot of the category, but a 2022 ranking should not be presented as a current 2026 buying result. Hardware generations change, applications are redesigned, monitoring providers and prices change, integrations can be removed, and older hubs may eventually lose support.

The most important correction is to separate historical recommendations from current verification:

  • SimpliSafe: current monitoring tiers and prices differ from the 2022 language; check the current official support page.
  • Ring: current Alarm and Alarm Pro kits, plan tiers, prices, and Virtual Security Guard offerings differ from the 2022 description.
  • Abode, Cove, and Blink: verify current hardware, subscriptions, compatibility, warranties, and availability directly with the vendor before purchase.

For construction or renovation projects, decide early whether security wiring, exterior camera power, network cabling, door contacts, or equipment locations should be incorporated into the work. A battery camera may avoid wiring, but a wired connection can be preferable for permanent coverage, high-traffic areas, or difficult-to-reach mounting locations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Installation checklist

  1. Map the property: Mark every exterior opening, garage door, basement entrance, detached building, and camera view.
  2. Choose the security model: Decide whether you need an alarm, cameras, professional monitoring, or a combination.
  3. Check the network: Test Wi-Fi where cameras and hubs will be installed; plan extenders or wired connectivity where needed.
  4. Install sensors correctly: Keep contact sensors aligned and place motion sensors away from vents, windows, direct sunlight, and pet pathways where possible.
  5. Plan backup power: Check hub and camera battery backup, and consider a UPS for the router and networking equipment.
  6. Configure people and permissions: Add emergency contacts, restrict shared-user access, and enable two-factor authentication.
  7. Set camera privacy controls: Use privacy zones and avoid unnecessary views into neighboring or shared spaces.
  8. Test failure conditions: Test alarms, notifications, battery behavior, sensor range, and the system’s response to an internet outage.
  9. Review local requirements: Check alarm permits, dispatch rules, false-alarm fees, lease restrictions, and insurance requirements.
