Level Lock+ Review: Is It Still the Best Apple Home Lock in 2026?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: the Level Lock+ remains one of the best-looking and most discreet Apple Home Key locks, but it is no longer the automatic best overall choice. It is ideal for an Apple-focused household that wants a conventional-looking deadbolt, physical-key backup, and tap-to-unlock access. Schlage Encode Plus and Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus are usually better fits when a built-in keypad matters; Aqara can deliver more features for less, provided you account for its hub and ecosystem requirements.

This review focuses on the current Level Lock+ Matter generation available in 2026. Earlier Bluetooth/HomeKit versions have different connectivity and battery specifications, so check the model number, packaging, and firmware before applying any comparison or battery claim.

Quick verdict

Best for Apple households prioritizing discreet design and Home Key
Strongest advantages Nearly invisible smart-lock hardware, Apple Home Key, physical key, cards, fobs, and touch unlocking
Main drawbacks Premium pricing, no integrated keypad, version-dependent connectivity, and up-to-six-month battery life on the Matter model
Choose another lock if You need codes for Android users, children, contractors, cleaners, or frequent guests

The Level Lock+ makes the most sense when the lock should disappear into the door rather than announce that it is “smart.” Its electronics are built into the lock body, while the exterior retains a conventional key cylinder. That is a meaningful advantage over keypad locks with a prominent electronic housing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

But the minimalist design also removes the simplest access method for many households: entering a code. A Level Keypad can add code entry, but that accessory changes the cost and partially undermines the reason to choose the Lock+.

What exactly is the Level Lock+?

“Level Lock+” is not one perfectly uniform product. Earlier versions centered on Bluetooth and Apple HomeKit. Level’s current documentation identifies a Level Lock+ (Matter) version using Bluetooth Low Energy and Matter over Thread. Battery life, remote-control behavior, and third-party ecosystem support should therefore be tied to the exact generation you are buying.

The current Matter specification lists Bluetooth Low Energy and Matter-over-Thread connectivity, with support for Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, and SmartThings when the required compatible Matter controller and Thread infrastructure are present. See Level’s current technical specifications before ordering.

The older specification lists Bluetooth Low Energy, Apple HomeKit and Amazon Sidewalk remote connectivity, and battery life of up to one year under typical conditions. That is not the correct battery figure to use for the current Matter version.

Apple Home, HomeKit, Matter, and Home Key

These terms describe related but different things:

  • Apple Home is Apple’s current smart-home platform and app.
  • HomeKit is the older Apple platform and protocol branding still used in product descriptions.
  • Matter is a cross-platform smart-home standard.
  • Thread is a low-power mesh networking technology used by some Matter devices.
  • Home Key is the Apple Wallet credential that enables tap-to-unlock with a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch.

A lock can work in Apple Home without supporting Home Key. The feature most Apple buyers are actually seeking is Home Key, and the Lock+ supports it on compatible hardware and software. Apple also notes that not every Home-compatible lock supports home keys; confirm the exact product edition rather than relying on a generic “HomeKit compatible” label. The Apple Home Key guide explains the supported experience.

How Apple Home Key works

  1. Add the supported lock to the Apple Home app.
  2. A home key is added to Apple Wallet on a compatible iPhone during pairing.
  3. With Express Mode enabled, hold the iPhone or Apple Watch near the lock to unlock without Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode.
  4. You can instead require Face ID or a passcode for an additional authentication step.
  5. Home members can receive access through Apple Home, subject to compatible devices, software, and Apple Home setup.

Level’s Apple-user supplement references an iPhone XS or later with iOS 15 or later and an Apple Watch Series 4 or later with watchOS 8 or later. Requirements can vary by product generation and current software, so verify the requirements for the exact Lock+ package.

Do not make Home Key your only fallback. Apple’s documentation confirms home-key use from a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch, but dead-battery behavior should not be assumed for every device and lock generation. Keep a physical key, Level key card, or key fob available. Level also supports the Level Home app, Apple Home, touch unlocking, and optional keypad entry. Its documented unlocking methods are listed here.

Design: the reason to buy it

The Lock+ is designed to preserve the appearance of a standard single-cylinder deadbolt. There is no large exterior keypad and no oversized interior touchscreen assembly. That makes it particularly attractive for front doors where visible hardware matters—or where a keypad would conflict with the existing architectural style.

  • On-Device Security with Proactive Alerts: Your access data — including entry records, user credentials, and fingerprints — is locally AES128 encrypted and stored directly on the lock, eliminating cloud leakage risks and ensuring complete privacy; Receive alerts for all door events and maintain visible, traceable activity logs; Enable “Silent Mode” to mute sounds quietly; When you're away, enable “Away Mode” to restrict access to your master credentials, the app, or physical keys only; This combination of encrypted local storage, smart notifications, and configurable control modes provides security that’s both robust and responsive to your life

The conventional key cylinder also keeps the familiar physical-key experience. Depending on the configuration, users can unlock with:

  • Apple Home Key on an iPhone or Apple Watch
  • The Level Home app or Apple Home app
  • Touch to Lock or Touch to Unlock
  • A Level key card or key fob
  • A physical key
  • A code through the optional Level Keypad

The trade-off is straightforward: fewer visible controls mean fewer effortless options for people who do not use Apple devices. A child without an iPhone, an Android-using guest, or a contractor who needs temporary access may be better served by a lock with a built-in keypad.

Installation and door compatibility

Installation is not automatically easy just because the electronics are compact. The quality of the existing door and frame matters more than the marketing photograph. A deadbolt that moves freely with the door open can still bind when the door is closed if the strike is misaligned or the door has sagged.

For the current Matter specification, Level lists:

  • 2 3/8-inch or 2 3/4-inch backset
  • A standard 2.125-inch bore diameter for the referenced package
  • Door thickness of 1.75 to 2 inches for the referenced package
  • Compatibility with specified Level short 2 1/4-inch or tall 2 3/4-inch strike plates
  • No support for strike plates from other manufacturers, according to Level’s specification

Check the manufacturer’s current dimensional requirements against your door before purchase. Do not assume that an existing strike plate will transfer successfully.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pre-installation checklist

  1. Measure the deadbolt backset from the door edge to the center of the bore.
  2. Confirm the bore diameter and door thickness.
  3. Inspect the jamb, strike pocket, screws, and door alignment.
  4. Confirm that the supplied Level strike plate can be installed correctly.
  5. With the door open, verify that the bolt extends and retracts smoothly.
  6. Before closing the door, test manual locking, calibration, app control, and Home Key.
  7. Keep the old key and another entry method available during initial setup.

If the bolt rubs against the strike, fix the mechanical problem before blaming Apple Home or the lock’s wireless connection. A smart motor cannot compensate for a weak, shifted, or poorly aligned door frame.

Connectivity, hubs, and remote control

The current Lock+ Matter model uses Bluetooth Low Energy and Matter over Thread. Those are not interchangeable with “works remotely from anywhere.” Local Bluetooth or tap-to-unlock access is different from remote commands, status updates, and automations.

  • Local phone or watch access: can use the nearby device and supported lock connection.
  • Apple Home control at home: depends on the home network and compatible setup.
  • Remote control while away: requires a functioning Apple home hub or the relevant Matter infrastructure, plus internet connectivity.
  • Automations: also depend on Apple Home’s supported hub and software configuration.
  • Alexa, Google Home, or SmartThings: depend on the Matter version and a compatible controller or Thread-enabled setup.

Apple says Matter accessories require a home hub, while Thread-based Matter accessories require a Thread-capable hub or border-router setup. Relevant Apple hubs can include a HomePod, HomePod mini, or compatible Apple TV hardware; exact capability depends on the model and current software. Apple’s requirements are documented in its Apple Home and Matter guide and home-hub support page.

Battery life

Battery expectations are one of the most important differences between Level generations.

Version Official battery signal Wireless specification
Older Level Lock specification Up to one year under typical conditions Bluetooth Low Energy
Level Lock+ Matter specification Up to six months under typical conditions Bluetooth Low Energy and Matter-over-Thread

Both cited specifications use one CR2 lithium battery. “Up to” is not a guarantee: usage, temperature, radio conditions, door alignment, and connectivity can all affect runtime. The current Matter figure is materially shorter than the older one-year claim, so buyers should plan for more frequent battery checks and keep a spare CR2 available.

Security and certification

Level’s current Matter specification lists BHMA Certified AAA credentials and ANSI 156.18 and 156.40 Grade 1/A ratings. It also lists IPx4 water resistance and an operating range of -4°F to 140°F (-20°C to 60°C).

Those certifications describe tested hardware characteristics; they are not a guarantee against forced entry. Real-world door security also depends on:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • How far the bolt extends into the strike
  • The strength of the jamb and frame
  • Long, properly installed strike-plate screws
  • Door alignment and resistance to sag or pressure
  • The security of the physical-key cylinder
  • Your Level, Apple, and email-account passwords
  • Apple Account two-factor authentication and phone security

Before installing any smart lock, repair a weak frame or loose strike. The strongest lock body cannot make an unstable door secure.

Guest access: the hidden limitation

Home Key is excellent for an Apple household, but “supports Home Key” does not mean every visitor has convenient access. Consider four groups separately:

  • iPhone guests: may be able to receive Apple Home access or a home key, depending on the setup and software.
  • Android guests: generally need a physical key, Level card or fob, or keypad access.
  • Temporary service providers: are easiest to accommodate with a code-based keypad or another dedicated credential.

Apple provides a guest-code path for supported locks: Home app → touch and hold the lock → Accessory Settings → Manage Access → Add Guest. However, not every Home-compatible lock supports access codes, and convenient numeric entry may require the optional Level Keypad. Review Apple’s guest-access documentation for the current software behavior.

Reliability: what can and cannot be concluded

Reliability claims about the Lock+ are mixed. Some reviews praise its Home Key integration, availability, and discreet design. Other long-term comparisons have found Schlage more dependable for Home Key use or have criticized Level for a less complete feature set. App Store feedback includes both positive comments about the hardware and support and anecdotal reports of confusing setup or re-pairing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those sources do not establish a universal success rate. Reliability should be judged by the scenario that matters to you:

  • iPhone unlocking with Express Mode
  • Apple Watch unlocking
  • Touch unlocking and Bluetooth proximity
  • Authentication-required unlocking
  • Remote commands and lock-status reporting
  • Operation after a battery replacement
  • Recovery after a hub, Thread, Wi-Fi, or internet outage
  • Re-pairing after removal from Apple Home

For a new installation, test every method while the door is open. Do not repeatedly delete and re-add the lock without recording its setup code and fallback entry methods.

Troubleshooting common problems

“Home Hub Required” or pairing failure

  1. Confirm the active Apple home hub is powered, online, and updated.
  2. Confirm the iPhone uses the Apple Account associated with the Home.
  3. Keep the phone and hub on the same network during setup.
  4. Restart the home hub and retry.
  5. Temporarily check VPN, firewall, or third-party network-security software.
  6. Retry pairing without discarding your physical key or setup information.

Apple’s Home Hub Required troubleshooting guide covers hub, software, network, and VPN checks.

Remote control is inconsistent

Check the home hub, Thread coverage, battery level, door alignment, and current Level and Apple software. A Wi-Fi or internet outage can prevent remote control even when nearby Bluetooth access or a physical key still works. The Lock+ should not be described as offline-proof.

The lock works with the door open but not closed

That normally indicates mechanical resistance. Check strike alignment, door sag, weather-strip pressure, and whether the bolt turns smoothly by hand with the door closed. Correct those issues before recalibrating the lock.

How it compares with the alternatives

Schlage Encode Plus

Choose Schlage when a built-in keypad is more important than invisible hardware. It is a stronger fit for mixed iPhone and Android households, children, visitors, and anyone who frequently issues temporary codes. Comparative 2026 coverage has favored Schlage for Home Key reliability and overall performance, although rankings depend on test method, availability, and current price. The manufacturer’s product information is at Schlage.

Choose Level instead when the large keypad housing would be a deal-breaker and the household is comfortable with Apple devices, cards, fobs, touch access, or physical keys.

Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus

Yale is worth considering when you want keypad access, door-status sensing such as DoorSense-oriented features, and broader household access options. Level remains the cleaner visual choice. Compare the exact Yale module and ecosystem configuration rather than assuming every Assure Lock 2 version has identical Apple features. See Yale Home for current models.

Aqara

Aqara models such as the U100, U200, or U400 can offer more access methods and features per dollar, depending on the model. Fingerprint, keypad, or other capabilities may be attractive to busy households. The calculation must include any required Aqara hub, bridge, app, and ecosystem setup; comparing only the lock-body prices is misleading. Start with Aqara’s current model information.

Level Lock Pro

Level Lock Pro is the most direct comparison for buyers committed to Level’s discreet design but interested in newer Matter, sensing, or Home Key capabilities. MacRumors describes the Pro as a Matter product with Apple Home Key support, while Apple’s product listing identifies door-status detection and Matter-over-Thread connectivity. Compare current price, battery expectations, door fit, required hub, and exact features before assuming the Pro is universally better.

See the Level Lock Pro review context and Apple’s product listing.

Which household should buy it?

Household Best direction
Apple-only and design-conscious Level Lock+
Apple household that needs a keypad Schlage Encode Plus or Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus
Mixed iPhone/Android household Schlage, Yale, or another model with integrated keypad access
Value- or feature-focused buyer Compare Aqara’s complete lock-and-hub cost
Existing Level customer Compare Lock+ with Level Lock Pro before upgrading or replacing
Door with alignment or frame problems Repair the door and strike before buying any smart lock

Final recommendation

Buy the Level Lock+ if your priority is a discreet, traditional-looking deadbolt with Apple Home Key, physical-key backup, and multiple non-keypad entry methods. It is a particularly good fit for an Apple-heavy home where regular users carry an iPhone or Apple Watch and the door already meets Level’s dimensional and strike-plate requirements.

Do not buy it simply because an old review called it the best HomeKit lock. In 2026, the strongest overall choice depends on access patterns. Schlage or Yale are more practical for keypad users and mixed-device households. Aqara may offer more features for the money, but only after including the required hub. And Level Lock Pro deserves a direct comparison if newer Matter and sensing features matter more than the Lock+’s specific price or configuration.
