Best Smart Locks of 2026: Your High-Tech Security Starter

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best smart lock is the one that fits your door, works with your preferred ecosystem, and still lets you get inside when the phone, Wi-Fi, internet, or battery fails. For U.S. buyers in 2026, the strongest choices are not interchangeable: Schlage Sense Pro leads premium Apple households, Schlage Encode Plus remains the simpler Apple Home Key pick, Yale Assure Lock 2 offers configuration flexibility, and August or Yale Approach suit many retrofit installations. Start with the door—not the feature list.

Quick picks

Best for Recommended candidate Why consider it Main qualification
Premium Apple households Schlage Sense Pro Matter over Thread, Apple Home Key, keypad, built-in Wi-Fi and newer hands-free features $399 MSRP; hands-free access requires specific Apple hardware, software and hub conditions
Established Apple Home Key Schlage Encode Plus Home Key, keypad, physical keyway, built-in Wi-Fi and remote management $329 MSRP and an older Wi-Fi-centric design
Ecosystem flexibility Yale Assure Lock 2 Modular connectivity and broad smart-home options The exact module, keypad, keyway, hub and region determine the features
Preserving exterior hardware August Wi-Fi Smart Lock or Yale Approach Interior retrofit design can retain the outside cylinder and existing key Compatibility, interior clearance and battery life must be checked
Fingerprint entry Ultraloq U-Bolt Pro Fingerprint and keypad access, alongside other local methods Verify ecosystem support and cloud reliability for the exact model
Matter-oriented alternative Aqara U-series, model-dependent Multiple access methods and newer Matter/Thread positioning Hub, regional version and supported Matter features vary
Discreet appearance Level Lock family More conventional-looking hardware than many keypad locks Model-specific features and premium pricing
Lower-cost shortlist Schlage Arrive, Wyze or another verified budget model Lower entry price and basic keypad or remote functions Check local operation, security credentials, update history and emergency access

These are categories, not a universal ranking. A smart lock that is excellent for an Apple Home user may be a poor choice for a renter, a multipoint door, or a household that needs fingerprint access.

First, identify the lock you can actually install

Most mainstream U.S. smart locks are designed for a standard single-cylinder deadbolt. Before comparing brands, determine which of these formats you have:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Complete deadbolt replacement: replaces the existing deadbolt mechanism and usually adds a new exterior keypad or touchscreen.
  • Interior retrofit: replaces only the inside thumb-turn while retaining the existing exterior cylinder and key. This can be useful for renters, but only where the landlord permits it and the retrofit can physically turn the bolt.
  • Lever or handle lock: designed for doors without a separate deadbolt, interior doors or certain older homes.
  • Unusual-format hardware: mortise, multipoint, rim-cylinder and interconnected locks often need specialized products rather than a standard deadbolt replacement.

Measure or confirm the door thickness, backset, deadbolt dimensions, boreholes, edge bore and clearance above and below the lock. Check whether the exterior trim will hit a storm door, screen door or narrow stile. Confirm the lock supports your keyway—or budget for rekeying.

  • 𝐔𝐧𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐀𝐧𝐲𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞: Built-in Wi-Fi lets you lock and unlock your door remotely anytime, anywhere from your smartphone — no extra hub needed. Stay connected and in control, even when you’re at work or on vacation. Only support 2.4Ghz network. Keep the router and lock with 65ft for better remote control.
  • 𝗩𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆: Pair with Alexa or Google Assistant to unlock or lock with your voice. Great for when your hands are full or you're relaxing at home and still welcome who’s at the door. Note: Please log in to your own Google or Alexa account first before use Voice Control and make sure your network connection is stable.
  • 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗞𝗲𝘆: Just one touch unlocks the door instantly. No need to search for keys — Your fingers is your keys, perfect for busy mornings. Philips wifi lock store multiple prints for easy family access.
  • 𝐂𝐨𝐝𝐞 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐌𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐒𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞: Create up to 100 custom passcodes for family, friends, or renters. Easily share unlimited one-time or scheduled codes to guests, cleaners, or deliveries— no need to be home to open the door.

Operate the existing deadbolt with the door open and closed. It should extend and retract smoothly by hand. A smart motor will not fix a sagging door, a misaligned strike plate or a bolt that binds. Correct those problems before installation; they affect both reliability and security.

Choose the ecosystem and network deliberately

Matter is an interoperability standard, not a promise that every ecosystem exposes every feature. A Matter lock may provide basic lock and unlock control in Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings while reserving access-code management, activity history, calibration and firmware updates for the manufacturer’s app.

  • Wi-Fi: can provide direct remote access without a separate bridge, but commonly uses more battery and requires a dependable 2.4-GHz signal at the door.
  • Thread: is a low-power mesh network, but remote smart-home operation generally requires a compatible Thread border router or home controller.
  • Bluetooth: is useful for nearby phone control and setup, but normally needs another controller or bridge for remote access.
  • Z-Wave and Zigbee: can be reliable choices in established smart-home or security systems, but require compatible hubs.
  • Apple Home and Home Key: are separate claims. Apple Home integration does not automatically mean tap-to-unlock with Apple Home Key, and Home Key does not automatically mean hands-free unlocking.

Before buying, write down the exact platform you use and whether you already own a compatible controller. A Matter-over-Thread lock can be a poor choice if you do not have the required hub. Conversely, a built-in Wi-Fi lock may be simpler for a household that wants remote access without additional hardware.

Its feature set includes Matter over Thread, built-in Wi-Fi for Schlage Home remote management, Apple Home Key, a keypad, access codes and UWB-assisted hands-free unlocking through Schlage Converge. • 0.3S Fingerprint Fast Access:With this fingerprint keyless entry door lock, unlock your door in 0.3 seconds with fast, secure biometric access. Store multiple fingerprints for family and trusted visitors.

The important qualification is that “hands-free” does not mean universally phone-free. The relevant experience depends on specified iPhone and Apple Watch generations, current iOS and watchOS versions, a compatible Thread-enabled Apple home hub and correct configuration. Schlage also specifies 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi requirements for its Wi-Fi functionality; see its technology page and FAQ before purchase.

Schlage identifies Sense Pro as ANSI Grade 2 and BHMA-rated for security, durability and finish. Those are manufacturer-stated specifications, not a complete independent assessment of cybersecurity or every installation. As a newly launched 2026 product, it is the newest premium option here—not automatically the most proven over many years.

Best established Apple Home Key choice: Schlage Encode Plus

Schlage Encode Plus remains the more straightforward Apple recommendation for buyers who want Home Key, keypad entry, a physical keyway and built-in Wi-Fi without paying Sense Pro pricing. Schlage lists a U.S. MSRP of $329. Its Schlage Home app supports lock status, remote control, access codes and history.

Encode Plus is not obsolete because a newer model exists. It is a simpler choice when the priority is reliable, familiar access rather than Matter-over-Thread or newer UWB-assisted hands-free features. Compare the exact trim and finish configuration before ordering.

Best for ecosystem flexibility: Yale Assure Lock 2

Yale Assure Lock 2 is a platform rather than one uniform specification. The module, keyway, keypad or touchscreen configuration, included hub and U.S. version can materially change the product’s connectivity and access methods.

It belongs on a flexibility shortlist for buyers who want to align the lock with an existing smart-home or security system. It is a poor choice for anyone who does not want to make those configuration decisions. Do not assume that one Assure Lock 2 listing has the same Matter, Wi-Fi, Z-Wave, Zigbee, Bluetooth, keypad or key-free behavior as another.

Best retrofit approach: August Wi-Fi Smart Lock or Yale Approach

An interior retrofit can preserve the outside cylinder and existing key, which may be valuable in a rental, a building with appearance restrictions or a home where replacing the exterior hardware is undesirable. August Wi-Fi Smart Lock and Yale Approach are candidates in this category.

The trade-off is fit. Confirm that the retrofit can turn your exact deadbolt, that the interior assembly clears nearby trim, and that the existing mechanism is smooth. Retrofit hardware may also have different battery and remote-access behavior from a complete replacement. Do not buy on the assumption that every U.S. deadbolt is compatible.

Best for fingerprint and keypad access: Ultraloq U-Bolt Pro

Ultraloq U-Bolt Pro is a sensible candidate for households that want fingerprint entry alongside keypad access. Fingerprints can be convenient when users do not want to carry a phone or remember a code.

They are not a complete fallback strategy. Wet, dirty, injured or gloved fingers can reduce convenience, and some users may have more difficulty with biometric sensors. Keep a code, key or other non-biometric method available. Verify the exact model’s ecosystem support, local behavior and cloud requirements rather than treating the feature list as proof of long-term reliability.

Matter, discreet design and budget alternatives

Aqara’s U-series products are worth considering when a buyer wants multiple access methods and a Matter/Thread-oriented design. Exact model, hub, regional version and supported Matter functions must be confirmed before purchase.

The Level Lock family is attractive when a conventional-looking exterior matters. However, Level models do not all have identical features, so verify the exact product’s keypad, Matter and Home Key support. It is generally a premium design choice rather than a low-cost one.

Schlage Arrive, Wyze smart locks and other budget products can reduce the initial price. Treat the saving cautiously. Check whether basic lock and unlock remain available locally, whether there is a physical key or emergency-power method, what security grading is claimed, how firmware updates work and whether the product depends heavily on a vendor cloud service. Current Schlage U.S. MSRP signals include $199 for Arrive, $299 for Encode, $309 for Encode lever and $241 for Connect; MSRPs are not guaranteed retail prices.

Access methods: convenience versus resilience

Method Strength Limitation
Physical key Works without batteries, apps or internet Can be lost, copied or inconvenient for guests
PIN keypad Useful for children, guests, cleaners and contractors Codes must be protected and deleted when no longer needed
Fingerprint Fast access without a phone or memorized code Performance can vary with moisture, dirt, gloves and skin condition
Apple Home Key or NFC Quick tap access with a supported device or tag Requires compatible hardware and does not equal hands-free access
Phone app Remote control, status and code administration Depends on battery, permissions, account access and sometimes cloud service
Auto-unlock Convenient when it works correctly Can depend on Bluetooth, background permissions, geofencing and operating-system behavior

For most family homes, rentals and short-term rentals, a keypad is more practical than phone-only access. A guest should not need to install an app merely to enter. Time-limited codes and instant revocation are especially useful for cleaners, tradespeople and short-term guests.

What happens when something fails?

Ask these questions for every model:

  • Does the lock work locally when the internet is down?
  • Does it still open when Wi-Fi fails?
  • Can a guest use a code without the app?
  • Is there a physical keyway or exterior emergency-power contact?
  • Can the lock be operated manually from inside?
  • Do auto-lock and scheduled codes work without cloud access?
  • Are activity logs local, cloud-based or both?
  • What happens if the vendor app, account or servers are unavailable?
  • Does a factory reset erase every credential, and how is ownership recovered?

For Sense Pro, Schlage documents a USB-C jumpstart port for depleted batteries. That does not remove the need to understand the lock’s normal battery replacement procedure. Battery life varies with Wi-Fi versus Thread/Bluetooth, daily cycles, motor load, door alignment, temperature, signal quality, firmware, battery chemistry, keypad use and auto-unlock behavior. Treat manufacturer battery figures as estimates, not guarantees.

  • EASY INSTALL: Install in minutes with just a screwdriver, no hardwiring required; Snap ‘n Stay design helps keep the lock on the door so both hands are free; fits standard doors with 1-3/8 in to 1-3/4 in door thickness and 2-3/8 in or 2-3/4 in backset

Security is mechanical, electronic and operational

  1. Mechanical security: deadbolt construction, strike reinforcement, cylinder quality, forced-entry resistance and security grading.
  2. Electronic security: authentication, encrypted communications, firmware updates, account protection and vulnerability response.
  3. Operational security: strong account credentials, multifactor authentication where available, protected master codes and a correctly aligned door.

A fingerprint reader does not automatically make a lock mechanically stronger than a plain keypad deadbolt. Likewise, an ANSI or BHMA rating is useful information but not a complete cybersecurity, forced-entry or long-term support evaluation.

Calculate the real first-year cost

Use this formula:

Lock price + required hub or bridge + optional keypad + batteries or rechargeable pack + installation + subscription or security-system cost, if any.

“No subscription” may still mean dependence on a vendor account, cloud service, proprietary app, firmware server or required bridge. A hub is not a subscription, but it still raises the installed cost. Add a reinforced strike plate, longer screws or locksmith work if the existing door hardware needs improvement.

Installation and setup checklist

  1. Confirm door thickness, backset, deadbolt format, clearance and permitted alterations.
  2. Repair sagging, binding or misalignment before installing the motor.
  3. Install with the door open.
  4. Insert batteries or charge the battery as directed.
  5. Calibrate only after confirming the bolt moves freely.
  6. Pair first with the manufacturer’s app.
  7. Add Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings or Matter only after basic operation works.
  8. Create a private owner code and a separate guest code.
  9. Test keypad, physical key, app control and emergency power.
  10. Test with the door closed, including full bolt extension and retraction.
  11. Store recovery information securely.
  12. Keep the interior thumb-turn straightforward for emergency egress.

Never make exiting dependent on a phone, cloud service or powered electronics. Local fire, building, landlord and condominium rules may impose additional requirements.

Before-you-buy failure check

  • Motor jams: the door or strike is misaligned; correct the hardware rather than forcing the motor.
  • Batteries drain quickly: check Wi-Fi signal, temperature, cycle count, alignment and battery type.
  • Router change breaks access: reconnect the lock to the new 2.4-GHz network and keep local access available during setup.
  • Matter pairing fails: confirm the exact controller, Thread border router and model compatibility.
  • Home Key is missing: Apple Home support does not guarantee Home Key; verify the exact model and supported Apple device.
  • Auto-unlock fails: review Bluetooth, location, background-app and battery permissions.
  • Fingerprint rejects a user: clean the sensor and rely on a code or key as backup.
  • Smart features fail but the lock still turns: use local entry while recovering the app, account or network.
  • Exterior electronics are unreliable: consider rain, freezing temperatures and direct sunlight when choosing placement.

Final decision tree

  • Want Apple Home Key? Compare Encode Plus with Sense Pro. Choose Sense Pro only if its newer Matter, Thread and hands-free requirements fit your hardware and budget.
  • Want the lowest complexity? Choose a keypad lock with a physical keyway and built-in or clearly documented emergency power.
  • Need to preserve exterior hardware? Choose a compatible interior retrofit, subject to landlord and building approval.
  • Want fingerprint access? Consider Ultraloq or an appropriate Aqara model, but test a non-biometric fallback.
  • Want Matter? Verify the exact model, hub, ecosystem and functions exposed through Matter.
  • Want the lowest price? Compare the installed first-year cost, not just the lock’s sale price.
