Best Smart Locks for Google Home: 2025 Picks Rechecked for 2026

Short answer: The Aqara U50 smart lock is the strongest value-oriented Matter choice, the Aqara U100 fingerprint smart lock is the best fit for fingerprint entry, the Nest x Yale Lock is the most Google-centric option, and the Schlage Encode is the better choice when you want built-in Wi-Fi without an additional bridge.

However, a lock being advertised as compatible with Google Home does not mean Google can perform every operation. The connection method, required hub, PIN rules, Google Home account support, and your door hardware all matter. This guide keeps the requested 2025 topic but rechecks the recommendations against research available through August 12, 2026. Prices, stock, bundles, firmware behavior, and Google Home features can change, so verify the current product configuration before ordering.

Quick comparison: the best Google Home smart locks

Lock Best for Connection Required hub or bridge Entry methods Important fit or control caveat
Aqara U50 smart lock Value-oriented Matter deadbolt Matter, plus Aqara integrations A Matter-compatible Aqara hub is required for Matter and broader third-party functionality Keypad, physical keys, NFC cards, emergency USB-C power For 35–55 mm wooden doors with 60 or 70 mm backset
Aqara U100 fingerprint smart lock Fingerprint access and multiple credentials Google Home and Matter through Aqara hardware Aqara hub required for Google Home, remote control, and Matter functionality Fingerprint, keypad, one-time or periodic passwords, NFC, mechanical key, emergency USB-C For 35–55 mm doors with standard 60 or 70 mm backset
Nest x Yale Lock with Nest Connect Google- and Nest-focused households Nest and Google Assistant integration Nest Connect is required for remote operation Keypad and passcodes; no physical key cylinder Not for glass, sliding, mortise, or multipoint doors; Google does not support voice unlocking
Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt Built-in Wi-Fi and established access-code management Built-in Wi-Fi and Google Assistant integration No extra bridge for the core Schlage app functions Keypad, physical key, app control, access codes Google functionality is integration-based; do not assume Matter support
Schlage Encode Plus Mixed Apple and Google households Built-in Wi-Fi, Apple Home/Home Key, Google Assistant No extra bridge for core Schlage app functions Keypad, key, app, Apple Home Key, access codes It is not being presented here as a Matter lock
ULTRALOQ U-Bolt Pro WiFi Existing ULTRALOQ users and fingerprint access Built-in Wi-Fi and cloud integrations Built-in Wi-Fi Fingerprint, keypad, app and physical-entry options depending on configuration Google Assistant support is documented, but Matter support for this exact model is not established in the cited material

My overall buying rule: choose Matter when cross-platform and local-network operation are priorities and you accept the hub requirements. Choose Schlage Encode when built-in Wi-Fi and straightforward access-code management matter more. Choose Nest x Yale when you already use the Nest ecosystem and are comfortable with Nest Connect.

Read this before buying: Google Home compatibility has three meanings

Smart-lock listings often use Google Home, Google Assistant, and Matter almost interchangeably. They are related, but they are not the same.

1. Matter setup through Google Home

Matter is the standards-based route. A Matter lock can be set up in the Google Home app, or configured first in the manufacturer’s app and then shared through Matter Multi-Admin. Google identifies door locks as a supported Matter device type.

Matter still has requirements. You need a compatible Google Home Matter hub, and a Thread-based lock additionally requires a Thread border router. Google also advises that IPv6 be enabled on the home network. A Matter logo on the box does not remove those requirements, and it does not mean every manufacturer feature will appear in Google Home.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Matter generally offers a more direct local-network architecture and makes it easier to use a device with more than one supported smart-home platform. The practical benefit depends on the exact lock, hub, firmware, and Google Home implementation.

2. Works with Google Home or Google Assistant integration

Cloud-linked products connect to Google through the manufacturer’s integration. The lock may offer remote access, codes, activity history, or other features in its own app while Google Home provides selected controls, status information, or routines.

This route can be perfectly reasonable. It simply should not be described as native Matter behavior. The Schlage Encode and ULTRALOQ U-Bolt Pro WiFi are examples of products that are attractive because of built-in Wi-Fi and established integrations, not because the cited documentation establishes them as Matter-first products.

3. Google’s Nest x Yale ecosystem

The Nest x Yale Lock is a Google-branded, Nest-integrated key-free deadbolt. Its setup and remote behavior are different from a generic Matter lock. Remote operation requires Nest Connect, and Google’s documentation specifically says the lock does not support voice unlocking.

The Google Home lock-control limitation most buyers miss

Do not buy any of these locks expecting a universal Hey Google, unlock the door command.

Google states that voice unlock is disabled for Matter door locks. Google also disables remote unlocking for Matter locks that do not require a PIN. For locks that do require a PIN, actual availability still depends on the manufacturer integration, account, device, region, and current software behavior. Google’s automation documentation also warns that locks requiring PIN codes are not supported by certain lock automations.

In other words, Google Home compatibility usually means some combination of:

  • Locking the door by voice or from the app.
  • Checking lock status.
  • Receiving notifications or viewing history, where supported.
  • Using the manufacturer’s app for unlocking, code management, and advanced settings.

Google’s 2026 documentation describes a gradual expansion of Google Home lock management, including lock history, notifications, battery status, passcode management, guest-access scheduling, and advanced settings for supported locks. Those features are not guaranteed for every model. Availability can vary by account, lock integration, app version, geography, firmware, and rollout stage.

Check your door before comparing features

A smart lock can be electronically compatible with Google Home and still be mechanically incompatible with your door. Measure the door and existing deadbolt before choosing a model.

  1. Identify the hardware type. Most recommendations here are deadbolt replacements. A mortise lock, multipoint lock, sliding-door lock, or interconnected lock needs a different product category. The Nest x Yale Lock is specifically not designed for glass, sliding, mortise, or multipoint doors.
  2. Measure the backset. This is the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the bore hole. The Aqara U50 accepts 2 3/8-inch or 2 3/4-inch backsets. Aqara lists the U100 for standard 60 mm or 70 mm backsets. Nest lists a backset no greater than 2 3/4 inches.
  3. Measure door thickness. Aqara specifies 35–55 mm wooden doors for both the U50 and U100. Nest x Yale documentation lists compatible thicknesses of 1 3/8 inches, 1 3/4 inches, or 2–2 1/4 inches. Do not assume an unlisted thickness can be accommodated with a trim kit.
  4. Check the bore and edge holes. Compare the manufacturer’s installation template with the existing holes. A replacement may require a different bore arrangement or additional drilling.
  5. Check alignment and latch movement. With the door open, the deadbolt should extend and retract smoothly. A smart motor can conceal a loose hinge, a sagging door, a misaligned strike, or a latch that already binds. Correct those problems before installing the electronics.
  6. Check weather exposure. Exterior-facing hardware must be installed only where the product’s environmental and installation instructions allow. Do not assume an indoor-rated keypad is suitable for an exposed gate or porch.
  7. Plan the fallback. Confirm whether the model has a mechanical key, emergency USB-C power, an external battery contact, or another recovery method. Also decide whether you need the new lock keyed alike with other doors.

For a construction or renovation project, record the backset, door thickness, bore diameter, door material, and existing lock type in the job notes. That avoids ordering a feature-rich lock that cannot physically replace the current hardware.

Best smart locks for Google Home, explained

Best entry-level Matter deadbolt: Aqara Smart Lock U50

The U50 is the best value-oriented recommendation when the buyer wants a conventional deadbolt replacement with Matter and several local entry options. Aqara lists support for Matter, Google Home, Alexa, and IFTTT.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its useful physical features include keypad entry, traditional keys, NFC cards, door-status sensing, auto-locking, emergency USB-C power, and a rekeyable design. That combination is more practical than relying on a phone or voice assistant for every entry.

The important limitation is the hub. Aqara states that a Matter-supported Aqara hub is required for Matter compatibility and broader third-party integration. Depending on the desired Aqara and third-party features, an Aqara 3.0 hub may also be relevant. Therefore, compare the price and placement of the lock and the hub together rather than treating the U50 as a standalone Wi-Fi lock.

Fit is also specific: Aqara lists 2 3/8-inch or 2 3/4-inch backsets and 35–55 mm wooden doors. Confirm those measurements before ordering. If the door fits and a hub is acceptable, the U50 is the clearest starting point for a Google Home household that wants Matter without paying for fingerprint hardware.

Best for fingerprint access: Aqara Smart Lock U100

The U100 is the feature-rich choice for households that want to open the door with a fingerprint rather than a phone, voice assistant, or physical key. Aqara lists storage for up to 50 fingerprints, ordinary passwords, one-time passwords, periodic passwords, NFC cards, Apple Home Key, mechanical keys, and emergency USB-C power. Aqara describes nine unlocking methods when all applicable hardware and ecosystem paths are counted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google Home and remote control require an Aqara hub, and Matter support requires a Matter-compatible Aqara hub. The U100 product page’s Google Home and Google Assistant support should therefore be read as ecosystem compatibility, not a promise of unrestricted Google voice unlocking.

The U100 is designed for standard 60 mm or 70 mm backsets and 35–55 mm door thickness. It uses four AA batteries. Aqara’s published battery-life figure is a manufacturer estimate, not an independent endurance test, so battery performance will vary with usage, temperature, network conditions, and settings.

If your household uses both Apple and Google devices, the U100 is unusually flexible because of Apple Home Key and fingerprint entry. If you only need keypad and key access, the U50 is likely the simpler and more economical Aqara direction.

Best Google-native option: Nest x Yale Lock

The Nest x Yale Lock is the most directly Google-branded choice. It is a key-free deadbolt with a keypad, passcodes, auto-locking, Nest alerts, and Google Assistant control for supported lock and status functions. It does not support voice unlocking.

  • 0.3S Fingerprint Fast Access:With this fingerprint keyless entry door lock, unlock your door in 0.3 seconds with fast, secure biometric access. Store multiple fingerprints for family and trusted visitors.

The lock does not connect directly to Wi-Fi. Remote operation requires Nest Connect. Google Store listings have shown both a bundle containing Nest Connect and a lower-priced lock-only configuration that requires the accessory; the retrieved lock-only listing was out of stock, so check the current bundle and stock status rather than assuming the accessory is included.

Google has also documented changes involving the Nest Hub Max: in situations where the Hub Max had previously served as a bridge, the lock may require Nest Connect. That makes the bridge requirement particularly important for existing Nest households.

Compatibility is narrower than many buyers expect. Nest lists compatible door thicknesses of 1 3/8 inches, 1 3/4 inches, or 2–2 1/4 inches and a backset no greater than 2 3/4 inches. The lock is not intended for glass, sliding, mortise, or multipoint doors. Choose it when the door fits, Nest Connect is available, and Google ecosystem consistency matters more than Matter or fingerprint access.

Best built-in-Wi-Fi alternative: Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt

The Schlage Encode is the strongest alternative for buyers who want built-in Wi-Fi and do not want a separate bridge for basic remote operation. Schlage describes remote control through the Schlage Home app, customized access codes, and lock history without an additional accessory for those core functions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Schlage’s integration materials identify Google Assistant support for Encode-family products. That makes the Encode a sensible Google Home-compatible choice, but the connection should be described accurately: the cited material supports built-in Wi-Fi and Google Assistant integration, not a blanket claim that every Encode model is a Matter lock.

Encode is a good fit for a conventional residential deadbolt where the owner values Schlage’s access-code workflow and wants the lock to reach the internet through its own Wi-Fi. Confirm the exact model, door template, finish, regional integration, and current Google Home controls before purchase because Encode-family specifications are not necessarily identical across every listing.

Best for mixed Apple and Google households: Schlage Encode Plus

The Encode Plus adds Apple Home and Apple Home Key support while retaining Google Assistant compatibility and built-in Wi-Fi. It is useful when one person wants Apple Home Key but the household still uses Google Home for broader smart-home control.

Do not let the Apple feature set obscure the Google limitations. The Encode Plus is not identified here as a Matter lock, and Google Assistant compatibility does not automatically provide voice unlocking. It is best understood as a cross-platform, Wi-Fi-connected Schlage lock with different capabilities exposed to different ecosystems.

Best for an existing ULTRALOQ setup: ULTRALOQ U-Bolt Pro WiFi

The U-Bolt Pro WiFi is a reasonable ecosystem-specific alternative for readers already using ULTRALOQ or prioritizing fingerprint access. ULTRALOQ documents built-in Wi-Fi, a door sensor, fingerprint capability, and integrations including Google Assistant, Alexa, IFTTT, and SmartThings.

For a new Google Home installation, it is less compelling than a Matter-first option because the cited documentation does not establish Matter support for this exact model. For an existing ULTRALOQ household, however, keeping locks and credentials in one manufacturer ecosystem can be more convenient than introducing a different hub and app.

Check the exact U-Bolt Pro variant and installation template. The name covers a product family, and features or included accessories can differ by listing and region.

Conditional option: Yale Assure family

Compatible Yale Assure locks can work with Google Assistant, but the correct recommendation depends on the exact model, region, module, and bundle. Yale’s official integration material says that select models require a ConnectX Wi-Fi Bridge or Yale Access Module.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The available Yale material is region-specific and does not establish one universally configured U.S. Assure Lock 2 SKU. For that reason, the Yale Assure family should be treated as a conditional recommendation rather than a single top pick. Identify the precise U.S. model and confirm which module or bridge it includes before presenting it as Google Home-ready.

How to set up a Google Home smart lock

For a Matter lock

  1. Install the lock mechanically and confirm that the deadbolt moves smoothly with the door open.
  2. Install batteries, apply any available firmware update, and complete the manufacturer’s initial setup if the instructions require it.
  3. In the Google Home app, use the device-add flow for a Matter-enabled device and scan or enter the Matter pairing code. Current labels can vary by app version.
  4. If the lock was first added in the manufacturer’s app, use Matter Multi-Admin or the manufacturer’s sharing flow to add it to Google Home.
  5. Confirm that the Google Home Matter hub is online. If the lock uses Thread, confirm that a Thread border router is available and that IPv6 is enabled on the network.
  6. Test status, locking, app control, keypad credentials, and any supported remote function separately. Do not infer that a successful pairing enables voice unlocking.

For an integration-based Wi-Fi lock

  1. Complete the lock’s setup in its manufacturer app and connect it to the intended 2.4 GHz or other supported Wi-Fi network according to that product’s instructions.
  2. Set a unique owner password and create individual access codes rather than sharing one permanent code.
  3. Add the manufacturer service through Google Home’s Works with Google Home or linked-service flow.
  4. Test the lock from the manufacturer app first, then test the Google Home status and control functions.
  5. Check whether Google Home can lock, report status, show history, or manage codes for that exact integration. Keep unlocking in the manufacturer app or at the keypad if Google does not support it.

For Nest x Yale

  1. Confirm the door measurements and install the key-free deadbolt according to Google’s instructions.
  2. Pair the lock with the Nest ecosystem and install Nest Connect for remote operation.
  3. Set passcodes and auto-lock behavior, then test alerts and remote access.
  4. Keep Nest Connect in a location where the lock can reliably communicate with it, following Google’s placement guidance.

Installation mistakes that cause smart-lock problems

  • Forcing the deadbolt: A motor cannot compensate for a door that is swollen, sagging, or misaligned with the strike.
  • Skipping the template: Existing bore holes can be technically close but still outside the manufacturer’s allowed geometry.
  • Buying the lock without the bridge: This is especially common with Nest x Yale and hub-dependent Aqara products.
  • Ignoring the door material: The Aqara specifications cited here are for 35–55 mm wooden doors. Verify suitability for metal, composite, or unusual construction.
  • Installing on the wrong lock format: A deadbolt replacement will not automatically replace a mortise or multipoint mechanism.
  • Failing to create a fallback: Keep the physical key, emergency power method, or another verified entry option available.
  • Testing only with the door closed: Perform initial calibration and operation tests with the door open. Then close the door and confirm the bolt fully seats without pressure.

If measurements are uncertain or the door requires drilling, hinge correction, strike relocation, or multipoint work, a certified smart-lock installation service can be more economical than repairing a damaged door or lock after a failed installation. Local availability and provider credentials should be verified.

Security and privacy checklist

A smart lock creates a sensitive relationship between the door, the manufacturer’s account, Google Home, and any third-party services. Google treats locks as devices with elevated privacy and security implications. Third-party apps requesting access to locks must complete certification and follow Google’s limited-data-use policy, but certification is not a guarantee that a lock is invulnerable.

  • Use a unique password for the manufacturer account and Google account.
  • Enable two-factor authentication wherever the manufacturer and Google offer it.
  • Create separate access codes for household members, contractors, cleaners, and guests.
  • Delete temporary codes when work is complete and review history where the product supports it.
  • Install firmware and app updates from the manufacturer.
  • Review which Google Home members and third-party services can control or view the lock.
  • Do not rely on a voice assistant as the only entry method.
  • Keep a mechanical key or emergency-power method available and make sure household members know how to use it.
  • Review the manufacturer’s privacy policy before enabling cloud history, guest access, or third-party integrations.

Accessories worth planning for

The accessory depends on the lock. Aqara buyers should budget for the compatible hub if they want Matter, Google Home, remote control, or broader third-party functionality. Nest x Yale buyers should confirm whether Nest Connect is included or purchase the bridge separately. Aqara owners may also want Aqara NFC cards for additional credential options. Keep suitable AA alkaline batteries for smart locks available for models that use replaceable AA cells, including the U100.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before ordering a construction accessory, confirm the lock’s exact model and battery specification. The right maintenance item for one product is not necessarily suitable for another.

Which lock should you buy?

  • Choose the Aqara U50 if you want the least expensive-looking path into Matter, keypad and key access, and a conventional deadbolt, and you accept buying an Aqara hub.
  • Choose the Aqara U100 if fingerprint entry, NFC, Apple Home Key, and multiple password types justify the additional hardware and hub requirement.
  • Choose Nest x Yale if your household is already invested in Nest and you prefer Google’s own lock ecosystem. Include Nest Connect in the plan for remote operation.
  • Choose Schlage Encode if built-in Wi-Fi, access codes, history, and a mature Schlage app matter more than Matter.
  • Choose Schlage Encode Plus if you need Apple Home Key in a household that also uses Google Assistant.
  • Choose ULTRALOQ U-Bolt Pro WiFi if you already use ULTRALOQ or specifically want its fingerprint and door-sensor features.
  • Consider Yale Assure only after identifying the exact regional model and confirming its required Yale module or bridge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Google Home unlock a smart lock by voice?

Do not assume it can. Google states that voice unlocking is disabled for Matter door locks, and Google’s supported behavior varies by integration. Matter locks without a mandatory PIN also have remote unlocking disabled. Plan to use the keypad, fingerprint reader, physical key, or manufacturer app unless the current documentation for your exact model says otherwise.

Do Aqara U50 and U100 locks need an Aqara hub for Google Home?

Yes. Aqara states that a compatible hub is required for Matter compatibility, and the U100 requires an Aqara hub for Google Home and remote control. Broader Aqara and third-party functionality may require an Aqara 3.0 hub or another specifically supported model.

Does Nest x Yale work remotely without Nest Connect?

No. Remote operation requires Nest Connect. Check whether the current retailer bundle includes the bridge; lock-only configurations may require purchasing it separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between Matter and Works with Google Home?

Matter is a cross-platform device standard that can be added to Google Home through a compatible Matter hub, with Thread devices also needing a Thread border router. Works with Google Home or Google Assistant integration generally connects the manufacturer’s cloud service to Google and may expose a different set of controls.

What should I measure before buying a smart deadbolt?

Measure the door thickness, backset, bore and edge holes, door material, and existing lock format. Also confirm whether the door uses a deadbolt rather than mortise, multipoint, sliding, or glass-door hardware. Aqara lists 35–55 mm wooden doors; Nest x Yale lists specific thicknesses and a backset no greater than 2 3/4 inches.

The Bottom Line

The best Google Home smart lock is not simply the one with the Google logo on its compatibility list. For most new installations, start with the door measurements and the required hub. Pick the Aqara U50 for value-oriented Matter, the U100 for fingerprint access, Nest x Yale for a Google-native Nest household, or Schlage Encode for built-in Wi-Fi and access-code management. Whichever model you choose, treat Google Home voice unlocking as unavailable unless the exact current documentation explicitly confirms otherwise.
