The best smart lock for most US homeowners is the Schlage Encode Plus because it combines built-in Wi-Fi, keypad entry, Apple Home Key, a physical keyway, remote control, and a manufacturer-stated AAA deadbolt certification. It is not the right choice for every door, however. Renters may be better served by the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock or Yale Approach, while Apple households wanting fingerprint or hands-free entry should consider the Aqara U100 or U400.
The most important decision is not the number of smart features. It is whether the lock fits your door, works with your smart-home platform, and still lets you enter when the battery, Wi-Fi, phone, hub, or cloud service fails.

How we compared these smart locks
A useful comparison must separate full deadbolt replacements, retrofit locks, and lock-and-camera products. The scoring framework used here gives the greatest weight to the issues that can prevent you from entering your home:

Full deadbolt replacement or retrofit?
Full deadbolt replacement
A replacement lock removes the existing deadbolt components and installs a new exterior cylinder, interior mechanism, and usually a new strike assembly.
Advantages:
- More integrated exterior keypad designs.
- Better access to fingerprint, Home Key, and other advanced features.
- Less dependence on the condition of the original deadbolt.
- A complete hardware package designed to work together.
Disadvantages:
- More involved installation.
- You may need to re-key the lock or stop using your existing key.
- Some doors have unusual preparations, multipoint systems, narrow stiles, or mortise locks that are incompatible.
Retrofit interior lock
A retrofit lock replaces only the inside thumb-turn mechanism. The outside cylinder and key remain in place. This is usually the best starting point for renters or homeowners who cannot change exterior hardware.
The existing deadbolt must be correctly aligned and easy to operate. A motorized retrofit cannot reliably fix a bolt that scrapes, binds, or requires force. Yale describes the Approach as a retrofit that preserves existing keys; cited coverage says its Wi-Fi bridge and keypad are separate accessories.

Schlage states that the lock uses an encrypted connection and carries a manufacturer-stated AAA deadbolt certification. Its US direct price was shown as from $329 on August 16, 2026. The company also lists a three-year electronic warranty and limited lifetime mechanical and finish warranties.

Aqara also lists Matter, Google Home, Alexa, and IFTTT compatibility. However, an Aqara hub is required for certain remote functions, automations, and Matter features. “Supports Matter” therefore does not mean that every feature works directly through every smart-home platform.
Aqara states that the exterior panel is IP65-rated and describes the lock as meeting a safety standard equivalent to BHMA Level 3. Treat that as a model-specific manufacturer claim rather than a universal comparison with Schlage’s certification language.
Buy it if: your household wants Home Key plus fingerprint access and you are comfortable with the Aqara hub ecosystem.
Skip it if: you want built-in remote access with no additional hub planning.
Aqara U400: best hands-free Apple option
The Aqara U400 is a full deadbolt replacement aimed at households that want UWB-based approach unlocking. Aqara says the feature requires select iPhone or Apple Watch models and a Thread-enabled Apple home hub. It also supports Matter over Thread, Bluetooth, a keypad, and rechargeable battery operation. Tom’s Guide reported a US price of $269.99.
UWB approach unlocking is not a universal replacement for a key, keypad, or phone tap. It depends on compatible devices, the home hub, settings, and the manufacturer’s implementation. Keep a conventional fallback method enabled.
Buy it if: you already use compatible Apple hardware and want hands-free arrival unlocking.
Skip it if: you use Android, do not have a Thread-capable Apple home hub, or want a simpler installation.
Schlage Sense Pro: premium UWB and Matter challenger
The Schlage Sense Pro was reported by Tom’s Guide as launching in June 2026 at $399. Its listed technologies include Matter over Thread, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Aliro, keypad entry, and UWB approach unlocking.

- Integrated eufy ecosystem: If you have a eufy doorbell, you can add your wifi door lock to your routines and control devices together for keyless entry within the eufy Security app.
The practical caution is battery management. Tom’s Guide reported unusually rapid drain when the lock was connected to Apple Home through Thread and the Schlage app through Wi-Fi. Battery performance improved after using Thread alone. The review also described UWB as iPhone-only at that time; do not assume broader Aliro wallet support is already available without confirming the current software and hardware support.
Schlage recommends alkaline rather than lithium or rechargeable batteries for this model, according to the cited review. It includes an exterior USB-C port for temporary power.
Buy it if: you want a premium Schlage design with newer Matter, Thread, Aliro, and UWB capabilities.
Skip it if: you prefer the simpler, more established Encode Plus configuration or do not want to monitor dual-radio battery behavior.
August Wi-Fi Smart Lock: best complete retrofit
The August Wi-Fi Smart Lock is designed for owners and renters who want smart control while keeping the existing exterior deadbolt and key. Its built-in Wi-Fi makes it a more complete retrofit proposition than a Bluetooth-only lock that requires a separate bridge.
The principal compromise is physical design: cited coverage describes the interior unit as relatively bulky. Compatibility also depends on the exact existing deadbolt, so check August’s current US compatibility information before ordering.
Buy it if: preserving your existing key and exterior hardware matters more than having a built-in exterior keypad.
Skip it if: you want a slim interior appearance, fingerprint entry, or an integrated replacement deadbolt.

Remote access requires a separate Wi-Fi bridge, while code entry requires a compatible add-on keypad. Those extras can erase much of the initial price advantage. It is best understood as a modular retrofit, not a complete keypad-and-remote-access package.
Buy it if: you want an inexpensive retrofit and can begin with Bluetooth access.
Skip it if: you need remote access and keypad entry immediately without calculating accessory costs.

Eufy Video Smart Lock E330: best lock-and-camera combination
The Eufy Video Smart Lock E330 combines a smart lock with a video doorbell. Cited coverage lists fingerprint, app, voice, keypad, and physical-key entry, along with Alexa, Google Home, and HomeKit support.
This is a different category from an ordinary deadbolt. The camera may offer less capable coverage than a dedicated video doorbell, and adding a camera to the lock creates additional privacy, account-security, and data-retention considerations. Choose it when combining devices is more valuable than maximizing either lock or camera performance separately.
Smart-home compatibility: what the labels really mean
Check each capability separately:
- Apple Home means the lock can be controlled from the Home app. It does not automatically mean Home Key.
- Apple Home Key means a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch can use Wallet-style tap entry. See Apple’s digital-key and Express Mode documentation for relevant device behavior.
- Alexa, Google Home, and SmartThings may support locking, status, routines, or voice control without exposing every vendor-specific feature.
- Matter is intended to improve secure interoperability across ecosystems, but certification does not guarantee identical support for fingerprints, guest codes, remote access, automations, or UWB.
- Thread requires a suitable Thread border router and compatible Matter controller or ecosystem hub.
- Bluetooth usually supports nearby control, not remote access, unless paired with a bridge or hub.
- Wi-Fi can provide direct remote access but does not necessarily mean the lock operates locally or without a vendor account.
The Connectivity Standards Alliance’s Matter overview describes the standard as a way to improve secure connectivity and interoperability. Product-level hardware, firmware, apps, and hub requirements still matter.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Battery, Wi-Fi, and emergency-entry checklist
Before buying, answer these questions for the exact model:
- Does it have a physical keyway?
- Is there an exterior USB-C, 9V, or other emergency-power method?
- Does emergency power only wake the lock, or does it complete the unlock process?
- Will the keypad or fingerprint reader work when the interior battery is depleted?
- Are alkaline, lithium, rechargeable, or proprietary batteries required?
- How will you receive low-battery warnings if Wi-Fi is offline?
- Does weak Wi-Fi, frequent motor operation, poor alignment, or cold weather reduce battery life?
Aqara’s U100 includes both a mechanical key and USB-C emergency charging. The Sense Pro review described an exterior USB-C port and specifically noted Schlage’s alkaline-battery recommendation.
Test the emergency method while the door is locked and you are outside. Store the physical key somewhere other than inside the house, and do not assume your phone will be available during a power outage or emergency.
Also popular on Amazon
- Passcode Entry: This keypad lock offers 20 access codes for family use and a temporary code for single-use guest entry
- One-Time Code: A one-time PIN code can be set for door opening and will automatically be deleted after use
- Smart Locking: Features an automatic door lock that can be set to lock in 10-99 seconds (off by default) and one-touch auto-lock by pressing and holding any key on the keypad for 2 seconds
- Long Battery Life & Low Battery Indicator: Powered by 4 AA batteries (not included), lasts up to 365 days. A red light indicator alerts you when battery level drops below 15%
- Security Deadbolt: Provides reliable home protection with its sturdy aluminum alloy construction, weather resistance (IP54), durability, anti-peeping user code protection, low battery indicator, and solid lock cylinder
Physical security versus digital convenience
A smart lock adds controlled access, temporary credentials, activity records, and sometimes remote operation. It does not automatically make a weak door secure.
Physical questions
- Is the deadbolt solid and correctly installed?
- Does the strike plate use long screws anchored into the framing?
- Does the bolt fully extend without rubbing?
- Is the exact model certified, and who makes that claim?
- Does the rating apply to the complete assembly or a particular component?
- Does retaining a keyway suit your threat model?
Digital questions
- Does the manufacturer support two-factor authentication?
- Are communications encrypted?
- Can you delete former users and temporary codes immediately?
- Are access logs stored locally, in the cloud, or both?
- Which functions remain available when internet service is unavailable?
- What is the vendor’s firmware and app-support policy?
Do not interpret a manufacturer-stated grade as proof that one brand is categorically safer than every competitor. A good lock still needs a strong door, a sound frame, appropriate lighting, secure accounts, and sensible access policies.

Fit and installation: check before ordering
Most residential smart deadbolts target standard single-bore US doors, but “fits most doors” is not a substitute for checking the compatibility chart or installation manual.
Verify:
- Standard single-bore deadbolt versus mortise, euro-cylinder, or multipoint hardware.
- Backset, commonly 2⅜ or 2¾ inches on US residential doors.
- Door thickness and bore diameter.
- Clearance around trim, glass, storm doors, and security hardware.
- Door orientation and lock rotation.
- Whether the exterior panel is suitably protected from rain, freezing temperatures, direct sun, and grime.
- Whether your landlord, condo association, or building manager permits replacement hardware.
For a retrofit, also measure the interior thumb-turn and confirm that the existing bolt moves freely by hand. Install and calibrate the lock with the door open first. Then test it repeatedly with the door closed.
Entry methods and their trade-offs
| Method | Useful for | Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Physical key | Universal emergency fallback | Can be lost, copied, or picked; no access log |
| Keypad code | Guests, children, caregivers, and cleaners | Codes can be shared or observed |
| Fingerprint | Fast household entry without carrying a phone | Wet, dirty, injured, or poorly registered fingers may fail |
| Phone app | Remote control and activity history | Depends on phone battery, app, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or cloud service |
| Apple Home Key | Fast tap entry for Apple users | Requires a compatible lock and Apple device |
| UWB approach unlock | Hands-free Apple-oriented entry | Device, hub, settings, reliability, and privacy limitations |
| Voice control | Accessibility and routines | Unlocking should require confirmation or a secure PIN |
Configure automatic unlocking conservatively. Use a small geofence, prefer explicit tap or approach detection where supported, and test behavior with the phone locked, offline, in low-power mode, and inside a bag.
Guest access, privacy, and total cost
Look for permanent, scheduled, periodic, and one-time codes; immediate deletion; activity logs; and clear control over shared users. Codes created in one app may not be fully editable through another. Tom’s Guide reported this limitation with the Sense Pro across Apple Home and the Schlage app.

Calculate the complete cost:
- Lock and trim.
- Keypad, if optional.
- Wi-Fi bridge, Matter hub, or Thread border router.
- Batteries or replacement rechargeable pack.
- Subscription or cloud-storage fees.
- Re-keying, replacement cylinders, or professional installation.
- A separate camera or doorbell if the lock has no suitable camera.
The Yale Approach demonstrates why headline prices can mislead: its bridge and keypad are additional purchases.
