Arlo’s Pro 6 and Ultra 3 cameras combine higher-resolution video with a subscription-powered AI alert system that can identify people, vehicles, packages, animals and other configured events. The important catch is that the headline feature is not included permanently with the hardware: Arlo’s Early Warning System and many advanced detections require an Arlo Secure plan.
The Pro 6 is the more affordable, simpler option for ordinary entrances, driveways and yards. The Ultra 3 offers 4K HDR video and a wider view, but requires a compatible SmartHub/Base Station. Neither camera should be treated as a replacement for a monitored alarm, smoke detector or emergency service.

What Arlo launched
The products covered in the January 19, 2026 T3 report are the sixth-generation Arlo Pro 6 and third-generation Arlo Ultra 3. Arlo announced a wider refresh of its Essential, Pro and Ultra ranges on August 26, 2025, so these are part of a broader lineup update rather than two completely isolated products.
The Pro 6 is a battery-powered indoor/outdoor camera with 2K video, a 160-degree field of view, an integrated spotlight, colour night vision, auto-zoom and tracking, and a swappable battery. Arlo’s US product page showed a one-camera list price of $124.99 during the August 18, 2026 pricing check.

The Ultra 3 is the higher-end model. It records in 4K HDR, covers a 180-degree field of view, includes a spotlight and colour night vision, and supports auto-zoom and tracking. Arlo says its battery lasts 15% longer than the Ultra 2’s battery; that is a manufacturer comparison, not an independently measured runtime result.
There is also a major setup difference: the Ultra 3 requires a compatible Arlo SmartHub or Base Station. Arlo lists the VMB5000 and VMB4540 among compatible models and says the Ultra 3 is not compatible with older Base Stations. It uses a USB-C connection. The hub requirement means the camera’s advertised price is not necessarily the complete installation cost.

What the Early Warning System actually does
Despite its name, the Early Warning System is not a physical siren and it does not predict a crime before it happens. It is an AI-powered alert layer that classifies activity captured by the camera and sends more specific notifications when it detects a configured event.
Arlo describes the system as combining person, vehicle, package, animal, custom and fire detection, with additional audio categories and contextual features available on applicable plans. The practical aim is to make alerts more useful than a generic “motion detected” notification.
For example, a notification could identify that a person is at the front door, that a vehicle entered the driveway, or that a package was left in a monitored area. Person and vehicle recognition can add further context by allowing users to label familiar people or cars and distinguish them from unfamiliar ones.

- sprinklers turning on;
- a school bus arriving; or
- a pet entering a specified area.
These are examples of the feature’s intended use, not a guarantee that every custom rule will work reliably in every home. Camera angle, lighting, weather, network quality, background movement and the exact event being monitored all affect performance.
Arlo’s plan information also lists fire detection and advanced audio categories such as barking, screaming, glass breaking and gunshots. These should be treated as supplementary alerts—not as replacements for certified smoke alarms, monitored security systems or emergency services.
Arlo says its advanced alerts are designed to reduce unwanted notifications, but that does not mean they eliminate false positives. The available product information does not establish a false-positive rate, detection latency or reliable performance in darkness, rain or crowded scenes.

The Pro 6 is likely the better value choice when 2K video is sufficient and the camera will cover a conventional entrance, side yard or driveway. Its lower hardware price and simpler setup matter more than extra resolution if the camera is close to the area being monitored.

What works without a subscription?
This is the distinction launch coverage can easily blur. “Works without a subscription” does not mean that every advertised AI feature is free.

Arlo says the Pro 6 supports:
- live streaming without a subscription; and
- basic alerts without a subscription.
A one-month Arlo Secure trial is included with new devices, although retailer promotions may offer different trial periods. The more advanced experience generally requires a paid plan, including features such as:
- cloud video history;
- person and vehicle recognition;
- custom detection;
- fire detection;
- event captions;
- video search;
- smart activity zones; and
- some emergency-response functions.
Feature availability can vary by camera, account, plan and country. Arlo’s support information also warns that person recognition may not be available in every region.

Buyers should check exactly which recordings and AI features remain available without Arlo Secure for their camera, region and hub configuration.
Arlo Secure pricing and the real ownership cost
The following were the US prices shown by Arlo on August 18, 2026. Arlo’s pages can display promotions and bundle-specific pricing, so they should be rechecked before purchase.
Arlo Secure Plus
- One camera: $7.99 per month when billed annually, or $9.99 billed monthly.
- Unlimited cameras: $17.99 per month when billed annually, or $19.99 billed monthly.
Plus is the tier most directly connected to the Early Warning System. Arlo lists 60-day video history, smart activity zones, person and vehicle recognition, custom detection, fire detection and advanced audio or event features among its inclusions.
Arlo Secure Premium
Premium covers unlimited cameras at $24.99 per month when billed annually and adds emergency-response and professional-monitoring features. Those services depend on plan and regional availability, so the price should not be treated as a universal promise that emergency responders are available everywhere.

Premium with continuous recording
The continuous-recording tier is listed at $39.99 per month when billed annually, with continuous recording for up to three cameras. It is a substantially larger recurring cost and is unlikely to make sense for someone who only needs motion-triggered clips.
Example first-year totals
Using the Pro 6’s listed one-camera price of $124.99 and the annual single-camera Plus rate of $7.99 per month, the simple hardware-plus-plan total is approximately $220.87 for the first 12 months before tax or promotions. That calculation treats the annual plan as 12 months of service; the included trial and the timing of billing can change the amount actually charged during the first year.
After the first year, the annual Plus service represents roughly $95.88 per year for one camera at that listed rate. Multiple cameras can make the unlimited-camera plan more economical, but the Ultra 3 also requires a compatible SmartHub/Base Station, whose cost must be added separately.
Who should buy the Pro 6?
Choose the Pro 6 if:
- 2K detail is enough for the area being monitored;
- you want a battery-powered camera for an entrance, driveway or backyard;
- the lower hardware price matters;
- you prefer a simpler setup without the Ultra 3’s required hub; and
- you accept that the most useful AI features require a continuing subscription.
It is the sensible starting point for a homeowner or renter who wants more specific alerts than ordinary motion notifications but does not need 4K coverage.

Who should buy the Ultra 3?
Choose the Ultra 3 if:
- you need the widest available view between these two models;
- 4K HDR detail is important;
- the camera will monitor a large yard or expansive driveway;
- you want local video access through an Arlo SmartHub; and
- you are comfortable paying for additional hub hardware and a more involved ecosystem.
It is a poor fit for buyers looking for the cheapest single-camera installation or for anyone who does not want a SmartHub in the system.

AI classification cannot compensate for a poor installation. Mount the camera high enough to discourage tampering, but not so high that faces become indistinct. Avoid pointing directly at the sun, headlights or reflective surfaces. Use activity zones to exclude roads, sidewalks, trees and neighbouring properties where appropriate.

Test Wi-Fi strength at the final mounting position before drilling or permanently fixing the camera. Battery cameras also need reachable battery access, particularly if they are mounted high or in a location that requires specialist equipment to service.
For an Ultra 3 installation, plan space, power and network connectivity for the SmartHub as well as the camera. Cloud video history is also a service dependency: if a subscription lapses, access to paid cloud features may change.
Privacy, reliability and safety limitations
Arlo says its cameras use protections including multifactor authentication, device-access approval and encryption. Those are Arlo’s stated security practices, not an independent security certification presented here.
Privacy-sensitive households should also consider whether they are comfortable with AI analysis, named-person or named-vehicle recognition and cloud-connected services. Check local rules before recording neighbours, public areas or audio.
Most importantly, do not use Arlo’s fire, gunshot or other audio alerts as the only life-safety measure. Install appropriate certified smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms, and use a professionally monitored system if your circumstances require guaranteed escalation rather than consumer-camera notifications.
Should you buy into Arlo’s ecosystem?
Arlo is a strong fit for people who want flexible battery-powered cameras, wide viewing angles and richer notifications than “motion detected.” The Early Warning System could be genuinely useful at a front door or driveway, particularly when distinguishing people, vehicles and packages helps reduce notification noise.
It is less attractive if your priority is a one-time purchase, fully local recording by default, continued recording during internet outages, or independently verified AI accuracy. The cameras can still provide useful live viewing and basic alerts without a plan, but the feature that makes this launch interesting is primarily a software-and-subscription capability.
In short: the Pro 6 is the value choice for ordinary coverage, while the Ultra 3 is the option for wider 4K coverage and SmartHub-based local access. Buy either one only after including the recurring Arlo Secure cost—and remember that “Early Warning” means faster, more contextual alerting after the camera detects evidence of an event, not prediction or guaranteed protection.
