For most U.S. homes, the best no-neutral smart switch is the Lutron Caséta Diva Smart Dimmer (DVRF-6L). It is designed for 120-volt circuits without a neutral, supports compatible dimmable LED and incandescent/halogen lighting, and offers local control plus app and voice features through the Caséta Smart Hub.
If you need simple on/off control, a relay module, or a switch for smart bulbs, the right answer changes. A no-neutral dimmer is not automatically suitable for fans, motors, non-dimmable fixtures, or every LED lamp.

What “no neutral” means
A traditional wall switch often uses only the incoming line or hot conductor and the outgoing load or switched-hot conductor. A ground may also be present. The neutral is frequently bundled at the rear of the electrical box because a mechanical switch does not need it.
#1 Best Overall
- App-Guided Install: The Kasa or Tapo app guides you through step-by-step setup. Requires neutral wiring and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Consulting an electrician is recommended if you’re unfamiliar with electrical wiring

- Voice Control: Enjoy the hands-free convenience of controlling the lights in your home with your voice via Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant; perfect for times when your hands are full or entering a dark room
- Scheduling: Use timer or countdown schedules to set your smart switch to automatically turn on and off while you're home or away. Enable ‘away mode’ to randomly switch on and off to trick potential intruders
- Trusted and reliable: Designed and developed in silicon valley, Kasa is trusted by over 4 million users. UL certified for safety use. System Requirements: Android 5.0 or higher, iOS 10 or higher
These are different situations:
- No neutral in the switch box: the neutral may be at the light fixture or another junction point.
- No neutral in the circuit: the wiring arrangement may be an older switch loop or another legacy configuration.
- Neutral present but inaccessible: a bundle may be pushed into the back of the box and covered by wire connectors.
- Unusual wiring: travelers, shared-neutral circuits, or multi-wire branch circuits can make the installation substantially different.
Do not identify wires by color alone. Turn off the breaker, verify that the circuit is de-energized with an appropriate tester, and follow the exact product instructions. Never use a ground conductor as a neutral. If you cannot confidently identify line, load, ground, travelers, and any neutral bundle, use a licensed electrician.
Why most smart switches need a neutral
A smart switch needs standby power for its electronics even when the light is off. A neutral provides a continuous return path. No-neutral devices use other designs, such as passing a small current through the lighting load, using specialized dimming electronics, placing a bypass at the fixture, or using a separate relay architecture.

That design explains the main trade-off: no-neutral controls can be more sensitive to LED compatibility, minimum loads, leakage current, bulb behavior, and fixture type.
Best overall: Lutron Caséta Diva Smart Dimmer DVRF-6L
The Lutron Caséta Diva Smart Dimmer is the strongest default recommendation for a typical U.S. lighting circuit without a neutral. It has a familiar paddle-style control, requires no neutral, and is designed for compatible dimmable LEDs and incandescent or halogen lighting.

SONOFF’s cited material does not by itself establish U.S.-specific certification, code compliance, retailer stock, or suitability for every American wall box. Verify the exact model and market before installation.
What if you need on/off control instead of dimming?
This is a separate selection problem. The Lutron products above are dimmers, not universal switches.

Use a dimmer when the light source is explicitly dimmable and adjustable brightness is useful. Use on/off control when the fixture is non-dimmable or when the load is a motor, fan, transformer, or other device that must not be connected to a lighting dimmer.
Lutron’s commonly documented no-neutral Caséta choices are principally dimmers. Do not buy a neutral-required Caséta switch simply because it belongs to the Caséta family. For a true no-neutral on/off device, verify the exact U.S. model’s voltage, certification, load type, minimum and maximum load, grounding requirements, and current availability.

Smart bulbs may need a different solution
If the fixture contains Philips Hue or another smart bulb, cutting power at the wall switch defeats the bulb’s smart functions. A wireless scene controller, battery-powered wall remote, or smart-bulb wall module is usually better. Another option is a relay configured to keep power continuously available, provided the product supports that arrangement.
How to choose
- Need dimming for ordinary compatible lighting? Start with the Lutron Diva DVRF-6L or Original Dimmer PD-6WCL.
- Need on/off only? Choose a verified no-neutral switch or relay rated for the exact load. Do not substitute a dimmer for a fan motor or non-dimmable fixture.
- Want the least ecosystem troubleshooting? Caséta is the more straightforward choice, but app and voice control require the Smart Hub.
- Want Zigbee or Home Assistant? Consider a relay such as the SONOFF module only if you are comfortable with in-wall installation and hub configuration.
- Have a two-location or three-way circuit? Check the manufacturer’s exact topology. A Pico remote, mechanical companion, and wired accessory are not interchangeable.
- Use smart bulbs? Preserve constant power and use a wireless controller instead of a load-switching smart dimmer.
Installation and compatibility checklist
- Turn off the breaker and verify the circuit is de-energized.
- Photograph the existing wiring before disconnecting anything.
- Identify line, load, ground, travelers, and any neutral bundle using the product instructions and appropriate testing methods.
- Confirm the exact model’s voltage, load type, ratings, and wiring diagram.
- Confirm that the bulbs or fixture are dimmable and compatible.
- Check box depth, wire volume, grounding, and local code requirements.
- Install the control according to the manufacturer’s guide.
- Restore power and test manual operation before pairing the hub or creating automations.
For Lutron products, use the manufacturer’s installation guidance, wiring resources, and LED compatibility tools. A crowded or shallow box, aluminum wiring, missing ground, outdoor location, damp location, or uncertain multi-wire branch circuit is a good reason to hire an electrician.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Light flickers while off | Leakage current or incompatible LED | Try a compatible bulb or fixture and use the manufacturer-recommended load corrector where applicable. |
| Bulb glows faintly when off | Small current passing through the load | Check compatibility and an approved bypass or load corrector. |
| Buzzing, delayed turn-on, or failure to turn off | LED, minimum-load, or fixture incompatibility | Check the exact bulb/fixture combination rather than assuming all LEDs are supported. |
| Switch flashes or shows an error indicator | Wiring or load problem | Turn power off, recheck line/load wiring and ratings, then consult the product troubleshooting guide. |
| Manual control works but the app does not | Hub, network, account, or pairing issue | Confirm hub power, network access, account setup, and device pairing. |
| Two-location control fails | Incorrect companion device or topology | Follow the manufacturer’s specific multi-location diagram; do not assume two smart switches can be paired. |
| Module will not fit | Crowded or shallow box | Do not force it. Use a deeper box or call an electrician. |
Lutron specifically discusses LED troubleshooting and the possible use of a LUT-MLC load corrector in certain installations. Follow the current instructions for the exact product and fixture.
Important limitations
- Fans and motors: Do not connect them to a lighting dimmer. Fan controls have different requirements and may need a neutral.
- Outdoor or damp locations: Verify the product’s location rating and enclosure requirements.
- Aluminum wiring: Have the wiring professionally assessed.
- Grounding: Never improvise a ground or neutral connection.
- Hub dependency: “Wireless” does not mean hub-free. Caséta uses its Smart Hub for app and voice features; Zigbee relays require a Zigbee hub.
- Code compliance: Box-fill rules, product listings, inspection requirements, and electrical codes vary by jurisdiction.
