The Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro BOV900 is the strongest all-around recommendation in the available evidence. It is fundamentally a large countertop convection oven, so its value does not depend entirely on an app. Its 13 functions include toast, bagel, broil, bake, roast, warm, pizza, proof, air fry, reheat, cookies, slow cook, and dehydrate.
Its one-cubic-foot cavity is designed to fit most 9-by-13-inch pans and 12-cup muffin trays. Breville also says it can toast nine slices, handle a 13-inch pizza, slow-cook with a five-quart Dutch oven, and roast a 14-pound turkey. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. The oven measures approximately 21.4 inches wide, 17.3 inches deep, and 12.7 inches high, making it a serious commitment for a small counter.
The connected element is Breville+, which provides guided recipes, classes, and cooking guides. The BOV900 page described more than 200 recipes when checked. Breville also claims its super-convection system can reduce cooking time by up to 30%; that is a manufacturer claim and was not independently verified in the supplied testing.
What makes the BOV900 a better smart-appliance bet than a screen-heavy refrigerator is that the intelligence sits on top of useful hardware. You can still use the oven’s physical interface for ordinary cooking, while guided recipes can reduce guesswork for unfamiliar dishes.

RTINGS gave it a 7.7 mixed-use score and a 9.3 baking score after testing in February 2025, with the review updated in May 2026. It found strong temperature accuracy, stability, and even cooking.
The compromise is important: the BOV800XL does not have a dedicated air-fry function. RTINGS rated its air-frying performance 5.8 and found its convection system insufficient for especially strong air-frying results. It also preheats relatively slowly and has limited vertical space, although it fits a 9-by-13-inch baking sheet and a 12-inch frozen pizza.

The Tovala Smart Oven has the most distinctive automation here: Scan-to-Cook. Through the Tovala app, users can scan Tovala meal kits and selected grocery products to transfer cooking instructions to the oven. That can remove meal-planning and setting-selection steps for the right household.
It also supports manual air fry, toast, bake, broil, and reheat modes. However, RTINGS gave it a 6.0 mixed-use score, 4.2 for baking, 5.6 for air frying, and 8.1 for toasting. The test found fast preheating and even toast, but poor temperature stability. The oven reaches 450°F maximum and 225°F minimum, which limits proofing and dehydrating. It fits pizzas up to about 10 inches in testing and does not fit a 12-inch frozen pizza.

Best alternatives if you do not want an app
Cuisinart Air Fryer Toaster Oven
The Cuisinart option is a useful counterpoint to connected appliances. Tom’s Guide found its physical controls easy to operate and its cooking modes broad. It is a better fit for readers who want repeatable everyday cooking without Wi-Fi pairing, accounts, cloud services, or recipe synchronization. Ninja countertop ovens
The Ninja French Door Premier and Foodi 10-in-1 XL Pro Air Fry Oven DT201 emphasize capacity and versatility rather than app-driven intelligence. Tom’s Guide described the French Door Premier as highly versatile and the DT201 as strong across cooking modes. The DT201 was also measured at about 61.3 dBA and had a very hot glass door in testing. Simple category alternatives
A standalone air fryer is often the better purchase for crisp food at low cost and with minimal footprint. A conventional toaster oven may be easier to operate and maintain. A programmable coffee maker can provide useful scheduling without needing an app. A basic multicooker may offer more practical unattended cooking than a Wi-Fi model if pressure cooking or slow cooking is the real goal.

Smart appliances that are not automatic buys
Smart refrigerators
Inventory cameras, touchscreens, shopping lists, and family calendars can be useful, but they do not improve refrigeration, ice-maker performance, layout, serviceability, or food preservation by themselves. Refrigerators are expensive and difficult to replace, so prioritize temperature performance, physical design, repair access, warranty, and local service before connected features.
Wi-Fi ranges
Remote monitoring, notifications, and recipe guidance can help busy households, but built-in ranges involve installation costs, long ownership cycles, and more expensive repairs if electronics fail. Consider one during a remodel or replacement—not simply as a gadget upgrade.
Smart coffee makers
Connectivity is worthwhile when it adds reliable scheduling, repeatable brewing, or grinder automation. If you only need coffee ready at a set time, a dependable programmable brewer may deliver the same practical benefit with less setup.
Smart ice makers
Connected ice makers are niche conveniences for households that use large amounts of ice. They also consume counter space and add another appliance to clean, descale, and maintain. Treat them as specialty purchases rather than universal kitchen upgrades.

Large countertop ovens need open space, a suitable outlet, and clearance from cabinets and combustible materials. Follow the manufacturer’s installation and operating instructions; do not assume that remote control means the appliance should be started unattended. Check whether remote starting is restricted, whether accessories are dishwasher-safe, and how grease and crumbs are removed from fans, heating elements, racks, baskets, and the crumb tray.

Exterior heat is easy to underestimate. Tom’s Guide reported test-specific temperatures of approximately 252°F for the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro and 282°F for the Ninja Foodi DT201. These are measurements from particular tests and operating conditions, not universal specifications. The same coverage found the Ninja French Door Premier relatively quiet but physically large, while some accessories were not dishwasher-safe.
Also account for steam, splatter, grease odors, door swing, and fan noise. An appliance that performs well but must be moved after every use may not be a practical daily appliance.
