Yes—you can monitor almost any modern security camera from an iPhone, but you do not necessarily need Apple Home or HomeKit. A camera may work only through its manufacturer’s iPhone app, appear in the Apple Home app for live viewing, or support HomeKit Secure Video for Apple-managed encrypted event recording. Those are different levels of integration.
Important date note: the original Macworld guide behind this 2024 title was published on November 28, 2023 and later labeled “2024.” This guide preserves that buying-guide context while correcting compatibility and support information available through August 10, 2026. In particular, the Aqara Camera E1 and Camera Hub G3 reached the end of Aqara’s published security-update support period on June 30, 2026, so they should be treated as historical 2024 picks rather than unquestioned new purchases.
For the 2024-era shortlist, the Aqara Camera E1 was the low-cost indoor HomeKit Secure Video choice, the Logitech Circle View was the most straightforward Apple-native outdoor camera, and the Aqara Video Doorbell G4 was the strongest Apple-compatible doorbell. For a current purchase, consider the Aqara Camera G100 as the newer budget alternative or the Aqara Camera Hub G5 Pro for a more capable outdoor and smart-home hub system.

| Premium outdoor system | Arlo Ultra 2 | 4K HDR, 180-degree view, spotlight, siren, battery operation and local microSD storage through its hub. | Expensive, hub-dependent and not a HomeKit Secure Video camera simply because it works with Apple Home. |
| Privacy-first indoor camera | Eve Cam | HomeKit Secure Video only, no Eve account and no separate Eve cloud subscription. | 1080p, wired and dependent on iCloud+ and an Apple home hub. |
| Current budget alternative | Aqara Camera G100 | Low-cost 2K, IP65 weather resistance, microSD/NAS/RTSP support and Apple Home/HomeKit Secure Video. | Apple Home and HomeKit Secure Video are limited to 1080p; advanced Aqara cloud AI can involve a subscription. |
| Current premium Apple-compatible hub | Aqara Camera Hub G5 Pro | 2.6K video, IP65 enclosure, encrypted local storage, NAS/RTSP and Zigbee, Thread and Matter hub functions. | Higher upfront cost and more complexity than a basic indoor camera. |
Apple Home, HomeKit and HomeKit Secure Video explained
The words “iPhone-compatible,” “Apple Home-compatible” and “HomeKit Secure Video” are often used as though they mean the same thing. They do not.

| Camera appears in the Apple Home app | No | Yes | Yes |
| Manufacturer account or app | Yes | Usually needed for setup and extra features | May be needed for setup or features outside Apple Home |
| Encrypted event history in iCloud | No | Not necessarily | Yes |

| iCloud+ required | No | Not necessarily | Yes |
| Up to 10 days of activity history | No | Not necessarily | Yes |
Apple’s Apple Home camera documentation covers ordinary live view, notifications and household access. HomeKit Secure Video adds encrypted recording storage, activity zones and on-device analysis by a supported Apple home hub. Depending on the camera and settings, detections can include people, pets, vehicles and packages, with face recognition based on people identified in the Photos app.
HomeKit Secure Video is primarily an event-recording system, not a universal replacement for a 24/7 network video recorder. Apple provides up to 10 days of activity history, and important clips should be exported before that history expires.
#1 Best Overall
- ENDLESS POWER FROM SOLAR ENERGY: Just 45 minutes of direct sunlight powers the camera for a full day of use, while the built-in battery lasts up to 180 days on a single charge during cloudy days. Solar charging requires temperatures above 32°F.△
- EASY WIRE-FREE INSTALLATION: Place the Tapo SolarCam C402 KIT where you need it without relying on nearby outlets. Install the camera and solar panel together or separately using the included 13 ft cable for flexible placement.
- PRIORITIZE WHAT MATTERS: Set activity zones to monitor specific areas for motion or people. Free person and motion detection helps reduce unwanted alerts and notifies you when activity is detected.
- VERSATILE VIDEO STORAGE: Store footage locally via a microSD card (up to 512GB)* or via cloud with a Tapo Care cloud subscription. Tailor your security to suit your needs, whether indoor or outdoor, you have the storage option you need.
- FULL-COLOR 1080P, DAY AND NIGHT: See clearly in low light with a large-aperture lens and built-in spotlights. Capture full-color night vision up to 30 ft away to monitor for possible intruders or motion.
What HomeKit Secure Video requires
- A compatible camera.
- An active iCloud+ plan.
- A HomePod, HomePod mini, Apple TV or supported iPad configuration acting as a home hub, depending on current operating-system and regional support. Apple’s home hub requirements should be checked before buying.
An iPhone by itself is not enough to provide HomeKit Secure Video recording. The home hub maintains the connection and performs the supported local video analysis. A camera can still be viewed from an iPhone without a hub if it supports the manufacturer’s app, but that is a different experience.

Current U.S. iCloud+ cost over one, three and five years
HomeKit Secure Video does not use the ordinary storage allowance shown in your iCloud plan, but iCloud+ itself is still a paid service. The following calculations use Apple’s listed U.S. prices and exclude tax, camera cost, hubs and memory cards.
| iCloud+ plan | Camera limit | Monthly price | 1 year | 3 years | 5 years |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50GB | 1 camera | $0.99 | $11.88 | $35.64 | $59.40 |
| 200GB | Up to 5 cameras | $2.99 | $35.88 | $107.64 | $179.40 |
| 2TB | Unlimited cameras | $9.99 | $119.88 | $359.64 | $599.40 |
| 6TB | Unlimited cameras | $29.99 | $359.88 | $1,079.64 | $1,799.40 |
| 12TB | Unlimited cameras | $59.99 | $719.88 | $2,159.64 | $3,599.40 |
Prices and availability vary by country and can change. A more honest ownership calculation is:
Total cost = camera + required hub + memory card or NAS + iCloud+ or vendor cloud + batteries or solar accessories + replacement cost.
For example, the manufacturer pages supplied for this guide show U.S. prices of $39.99 for the Aqara G100, $69.99 for the Aqara E1, $99.99 for the Aqara G4, $159.99 for the Logitech Circle View and $199.99 for the Aqara G5 Pro. Treat those as dated manufacturer-listed prices, not guaranteed retail prices. Arlo product prices and subscription rates vary by model, bundle and promotion, so verify the current total before ordering.
Best cameras by use case
Best 2024-era budget indoor camera: Aqara Camera E1
The Aqara Camera E1 was a compelling 2024 budget choice for an indoor room, hallway or pet area. Its 2K sensor produces 2304 × 1296 video in Aqara’s system, and the pan/tilt mechanism provides a 360-degree viewing capability. It supports HomeKit Secure Video, microSD cards up to 512GB and SMB3-compatible NAS backup.
The important qualifications are practical rather than cosmetic. It is an indoor IP20 camera, supports only 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, uses USB-C power and requires a 5V/2A supply that Aqara does not include. The memory card is also an extra purchase. More importantly for a current buyer, Aqara’s published security-support policy lists June 30, 2026 as the end of security-update support for the E1. It may continue to function, but it is not a responsible unqualified long-term recommendation in 2026.
Choose it if: you are documenting the 2024 buying landscape, already own one, or can accept its support status. Skip it for a new installation if: long-term security support matters.
Best current budget replacement: Aqara Camera G100
The Aqara Camera G100 is a more current alternative for readers who want low-cost Apple integration plus local storage. It has a 2K 2304 × 1296 sensor, a 140-degree diagonal field of view, IP65 weather resistance, 2.4GHz Wi-Fi 6, microSD support up to 512GB, NAS and RTSP support, local person detection and Apple Home/HomeKit Secure Video support.
Recommended Free Tools
There is a major platform-specific caveat: although the camera sensor is 2K, Aqara states that HomeKit Secure Video supports up to 1080p. Use Aqara’s own app if the higher native resolution matters more than having recordings in Apple Home. Local person detection is available without a subscription, while some more advanced Aqara cloud AI features may be paid.
Choose it if: you want a current, inexpensive camera that can serve Apple Home, microSD, NAS or RTSP users. Skip it if: you need 4K footage in Apple Home or a fully native Apple-only setup.
Best Apple-native outdoor camera: Logitech Circle View
The Logitech Circle View is unusual because it was designed exclusively for Apple HomeKit rather than trying to serve several competing ecosystems. It records at 1080p, has a 180-degree diagonal field of view, infrared night vision up to 15 feet and an IP64-rated weather-resistant body. It is wired over USB and supports HomeKit Secure Video.
Privacy is its strongest differentiator. A physical privacy button turns the camera off, and the camera can be tilted downward into a privacy position. It has no Android app, so it is a poor fit for a mixed Apple/Android household. The 1080p resolution and fixed wired installation also make it less suitable for a distant driveway than for a porch, covered entrance or area close to the house.

Skip it if: you need battery power, 4K, local microSD storage or advanced vendor-app features.
Best Apple-compatible doorbell: Aqara Video Doorbell G4
The Aqara Video Doorbell G4 is a better front-door choice than simply pointing an indoor camera at the porch because it includes a doorbell button and separate indoor chime. It records 1080p video with a 162-degree field of view, supports HomeKit Secure Video, and stores local footage on a microSD card installed in the indoor chime. The card is not included.
It can run from six AA batteries or wired power. Aqara quotes up to four months of battery life under a specified usage assumption; frequent motion, live viewing, cold weather and other factors can reduce that figure. Wired installation supports 24/7 recording according to Aqara’s product information, while battery use is designed around event-based operation. It supports 12–24V AC/DC wired power and has IPX3 weather resistance, so installation under suitable shelter matters.

- Outdoor 4 is our most affordable wireless smart security camera yet, offering up to two-year battery life for around-the-clock peace of mind. Local storage not included with Sync Module Core.
- See and speak from the Blink app — Experience 1080p HD live view, infrared night vision, and crisp two-way audio.
- Two-year battery life — Set up in minutes and get up to two years of power with the included AA Energizer lithium batteries and a Blink Sync Module Core.
- Enhanced motion detection — Be alerted to motion faster from your smartphone with dual-zone, enhanced motion detection.
- Person detection — Get alerts when a person is detected with embedded computer vision (CV) as part of an optional Blink Subscription Plan (sold separately).
The G4 also includes seven-day Aqara cloud storage, but “no camera subscription” should not be confused with “no Apple cost”: HomeKit Secure Video still requires iCloud+. For a front door, check package visibility, visitor height, existing transformer compatibility, Wi-Fi strength and whether the camera can be mounted where it cannot easily be removed.

The Arlo Essential XL is a practical choice when running power to an outdoor location is difficult. Its second-generation design has an integrated battery and color night vision. It can work with Apple Home, but Apple Home compatibility requires a compatible Arlo SmartHub or Base Station. It is therefore not a plug-and-play Apple-native camera like the Circle View or Eve Cam.
Arlo’s own app and cloud ecosystem remain important. Basic live viewing and some alerts may be available without a paid plan, but premium cloud recording and advanced object detection require Arlo Secure after any applicable trial period. Battery runtime is not a fixed guarantee: motion volume, live-view use, temperature and lighting features all affect it.
Choose it if: you need flexible outdoor placement and accept the Arlo hub and subscription model. Skip it if: you want HomeKit Secure Video, local Apple-only operation or no vendor account.
Best premium outdoor system: Arlo Ultra 2
The Arlo Ultra 2 is the high-end outdoor option in this group. It offers 3840 × 2160 4K video, HDR, a 180-degree field of view, color night vision, a spotlight and a siren. It is battery-powered and weather-resistant, and local storage is available through a microSD card inserted in its required SmartHub.

Do not assume that a 4K Arlo stream becomes 4K HomeKit Secure Video footage; Apple Home compatibility and HomeKit Secure Video are separate claims, and the Arlo product’s premium recording features remain tied to Arlo Secure. The Ultra 2 makes most sense when you value its native 4K, wide outdoor view and Arlo’s ecosystem more than a simple Apple-only setup.
Arlo Pro 5S 2K: a compatibility correction
The original 2024-era coverage described the Arlo Pro 5S 2K as lacking HomeKit support. That is now outdated. Arlo announced on May 20, 2024 that Apple Home support had been added when the camera is paired with one of the listed hubs or Base Stations: VMB4000, VMB4500, VMB4540 or VMB5000.
The Pro 5S 2K provides 2560 × 1440 video, HDR, a 160-degree field of view and color night vision, and it can connect directly to Wi-Fi in supported setups. However, Apple Home compatibility should not be described as HomeKit Secure Video support unless the exact camera, firmware and configuration have been separately verified.
Best camera-plus-smart-home hub: Aqara Camera Hub G3
The Aqara Camera Hub G3 combines a 2K 2304 × 1296 pan/tilt camera with an Aqara Zigbee hub. It supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi and HomeKit Secure Video.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Its Apple integration is substantially more limited than the native camera specification suggests. In HomeKit Secure Video mode, recording is limited to 1080p and pan/tilt controls are not available. Aqara’s security-support policy lists June 30, 2026 as the end of security-update support for the G3, so it belongs in a historical 2024 comparison rather than an unqualified current recommendation.
Best privacy-first indoor camera: Eve Cam
The Eve Cam is built specifically around Apple HomeKit Secure Video. It records 1080p at 24 frames per second, has a 150-degree field of view, night vision up to 5 metres or 16.4 feet, two-way audio and wired USB power. It supports people, pet and vehicle detection through HomeKit Secure Video.
Eve does not require an Eve account or a separate Eve cloud subscription. It does require iCloud+ and a HomePod or Apple TV home hub. That makes it attractive for an Apple-only home that wants to avoid another camera-cloud account, but unsuitable for Android users or anyone who wants battery operation, 4K or independent local recording.
Netatmo Indoor Camera Advance: Apple Home, but not HomeKit Secure Video
Netatmo’s current Indoor Camera Advance supports Apple Home features including live feed, presence and motion detection. It does not support HomeKit Secure Video. Netatmo provides its own local and vendor-controlled storage options, but it should not be marketed as an iCloud/HomeKit Secure Video camera.

Choosing for indoors, a porch, a driveway or a front door
Indoor rooms, pets and nurseries
For an indoor room, prioritize privacy controls, audio settings, night performance and whether the camera can be physically disabled. Pan/tilt is useful for pets or a large room, but it can also create blind spots while the lens is facing elsewhere. A fixed camera such as Eve Cam or Circle View is easier to understand: its field of view remains predictable.
Nursery and indoor cameras deserve extra caution. Avoid bedrooms and bathrooms unless there is an exceptional reason, tell household members and workers about indoor cameras, and disable audio if it is not required. A physical privacy control, such as the Circle View’s button, is more reassuring than a software-only promise.
Covered porch or exposed wall
A covered porch can suit the Logitech Circle View, provided there is a reliable outdoor-rated power arrangement. For an exposed wall, examine the IP rating, operating temperature, cable weather resistance and mounting security—not just whether the product page says “outdoor.” IP64 and IP65 are not interchangeable with a guarantee that every power connection or cable joint is weatherproof.
Driveway and garden
A wide field of view is useful for seeing more of a driveway, but extreme wide-angle lenses can distort faces and reduce detail at the edges. A 180-degree camera may show the whole approach while making a distant person harder to identify. Consider camera height, the distance to the expected subject, night lighting, Wi-Fi signal and whether you need continuous recording.

For a long driveway, 4K in the manufacturer’s app may be more useful than 1080p in Apple Home. If the location is beyond reliable Wi-Fi, a mesh access point with wired backhaul, Ethernet/PoE, a cellular camera or a local NVR may be more appropriate than any ordinary HomeKit camera.
Front door and packages
A doorbell should show a visitor’s face and, ideally, the area where packages are placed. Check whether the camera provides a head-to-toe view, whether your existing transformer is compatible, whether the chime is included and whether visitors can communicate through the device. A conventional camera pointed at the door does not necessarily provide a doorbell button, indoor chime or suitable vertical framing.
Cloud, local storage and the meaning of “no subscription”
“No subscription” can mean several different things:
- No monthly fee for live viewing.
- Free event recording to a microSD card.
- No manufacturer cloud account.
- No Apple iCloud+ payment.
- No paid AI detection.
- No recurring fee for continuous recording.
Those are not equivalent. Eve Cam avoids a separate Eve account and cloud subscription, but HomeKit Secure Video still requires iCloud+. Aqara cameras can record to local cards or NAS devices, but advanced cloud AI may be paid. Arlo commonly allows basic access without a paid plan while reserving cloud recording and premium detection for Arlo Secure. Netatmo’s current Indoor Camera Advance supports Apple Home but not HomeKit Secure Video.
Local storage options
- Aqara E1: microSD up to 512GB and SMB3-compatible NAS backup; card and power adapter are extra.
- Aqara G4: microSD card in the indoor chime; the card is not included.
- Aqara G100: microSD up to 512GB, NAS and RTSP support.
- Arlo Ultra 2: microSD storage through the required SmartHub.
- Aqara G5 Pro: encrypted local eMMC storage, NAS and RTSP support.
Local storage can continue recording during an internet outage if the camera has power and the local network or storage path remains available. It is not automatically secure or indestructible: a thief may take a camera and its microSD card, a card may fail or fill up, and remote access may still depend on a vendor account. An indoor hub or NAS is generally harder to steal than a card inside an outdoor camera.
What happens when Wi-Fi, internet or power fails?
| Failure | What may continue | What normally stops | Best protection |
|---|---|---|---|
| Internet outage | Local microSD, NAS or hub recording may continue if power and the local network remain available. | Remote iPhone viewing, cloud uploads and remote notifications usually fail. | Local storage, a UPS for networking equipment and periodic recovery tests. |
| Wi-Fi/router outage | A camera with its own local recording may retain footage until storage fills, depending on design. | Network live view, HomeKit communication and cloud upload normally stop. | Reliable access points, wired backhaul, Ethernet/PoE or a local NVR. |
| Power outage | Battery cameras can continue operating, subject to Wi-Fi and hub availability. | Wired cameras stop unless their power source is backed up. | UPS, backup power or battery camera; test automatic reconnection. |
| Camera stolen | Cloud or indoor-hub/NAS recordings may preserve earlier events. | microSD footage inside the stolen camera may be lost. | Secure mounts, discreet placement, pre-event recording and off-camera storage. |
“Wireless” describes the network connection, not independence from the internet or electricity. A battery camera can remain powered while still being unable to contact your iPhone because the router, access point or home hub is offline. Local viewing from an iPhone may work on the same network during an internet outage, but behavior depends on the camera and home setup.
Continuous recording: do not confuse it with HomeKit event history
HomeKit Secure Video is best understood as secure event history. It is not automatically a 24/7 NVR, and battery cameras generally cannot record continuously because they sleep to preserve power.
If continuous recording is essential, check all of the following:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Whether the camera is wired rather than battery-powered.
- Where continuous footage is stored: microSD, NAS, vendor cloud or a dedicated NVR.
- Whether continuous recording is available only in the manufacturer’s app.
- Whether the card capacity is sufficient for the desired retention period.
- Whether the camera resumes recording after a router or power restart.
Aqara states that the G4 can provide 24/7 recording in wired mode, but that does not mean every Apple Home or battery configuration records continuously. For a serious driveway, construction site or remote property, a wired PoE camera and local NVR may be a better architecture than relying only on HomeKit Secure Video.
Image quality: native resolution is not Apple Home resolution
Do not compare cameras only by the number printed on the box. The relevant question is: what resolution will be available in the app and recording system I intend to use?
- Aqara E1 has a 2K sensor.
- Aqara G3 has a 2K sensor but is limited to 1080p in HomeKit Secure Video mode.
- Aqara G100 has a 2K sensor but HomeKit Secure Video supports up to 1080p.
- Aqara’s G350 documentation also lists a 1080p limit within Apple Home.
- Arlo Ultra 2 is a 4K camera, but Apple Home compatibility should not be treated as proof of 4K HomeKit Secure Video recording.
Night detail, dynamic range in a backlit doorway, compression, motion blur and the distance to a face often matter more than a higher headline resolution. A wide lens may cover more ground but put fewer pixels on a person. Digital zoom cannot restore detail that was never captured.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.AI detection, privacy and security
Compare detection features individually rather than treating every “AI” label as equivalent. Relevant categories include people, pets, vehicles, packages, faces, audio and general motion. Also ask whether processing happens locally or in the vendor’s cloud, whether advanced categories require a subscription and how often false alerts are caused by shadows, trees, insects, headlights or reflections.
HomeKit Secure Video’s supported analysis takes place through the Apple home hub architecture. That is different from a manufacturer app that sends video or metadata to a vendor cloud for additional detection. Neither architecture makes every product or company automatically secure.
Look for:
- Physical camera-off buttons, shutters or privacy positions.
- Activity and privacy zones.
- Recording schedules and home/away modes.
- Audio disable controls.
- Unique passwords and multi-factor authentication.
- Published firmware and security-update policies.
- Clear deletion, retention and export controls.
- Whether the camera requires an account for basic use.
- Whether local footage is encrypted.
The Circle View has a physical privacy button and a downward privacy position. Eve Cam is designed for Apple HomeKit Secure Video and does not require an Eve account. These are concrete controls; they are more useful than describing a product generally as “privacy-focused.”
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission recommends updating camera software, securing accounts and considering privacy before enabling remote viewing in its home security camera guidance. The FTC has also taken action involving camera companies, including Ring and Verkada. No vendor should be described as categorically secure.
Installation and setup checklist
- Confirm the exact model and region. Compatibility can vary between similar product names, firmware versions and countries.
- Check the power plan. Decide whether the camera needs a nearby outlet, transformer, PoE cable, battery replacement or solar accessory.
- Check Wi-Fi before mounting. A phone’s strong signal does not prove that a camera at the installation point will have a reliable connection.
- Update firmware before installation. This can correct compatibility and security problems before the camera is difficult to reach.
- Create a unique account password and enable MFA. Do this for the manufacturer account and Apple account where applicable.
- Add the camera to the manufacturer app or Apple Home. If using HomeKit Secure Video, confirm that iCloud+ and a home hub are active.
- Configure detection and privacy zones. Mask neighboring windows, public areas and locations that do not need recording.
- Disable unnecessary audio. Audio surveillance can create additional privacy and legal concerns.
- Set home, away and recording rules. Verify whether the rule affects the manufacturer app, Apple Home, or both.
- Test from cellular data. Turn off Wi-Fi on the iPhone and confirm that remote viewing and alerts work.
- Trigger a test event. Check the notification, recorded clip, thumbnail and detection label.
- Check nighttime footage. Test the intended distance, reflections, porch lighting and motion blur.
- Export a test clip. Confirm that you know how to save evidence before an incident occurs.
- Test recovery. Reboot the router and camera, and if practical simulate a short power interruption. Confirm automatic reconnection.
If HomeKit setup fails
Common causes include the camera and iPhone being on different network segments, blocked Bonjour or multicast traffic, MAC-address authentication, disabled DHCP, incompatible WPA2 settings, a camera that supports only 2.4GHz, mesh-client isolation, an accessory already bound to another home, an offline home hub or outdated firmware.

Eve’s troubleshooting information specifically highlights DHCP, MAC authentication, WPA2 mode, Bonjour, multicast and powerline networking as potential HomeKit setup issues. Temporarily connect the iPhone to the required 2.4GHz network, disable client isolation and update the camera and router firmware before trying the pairing process again.
If the camera appears in its own app but not Apple Home
- It may support only the manufacturer’s app.
- It may support Apple Home live view but not HomeKit Secure Video.
- It may require a hub, as with some Arlo cameras.
- The HomeKit code may be printed on a separate chime or hub.
- The model may be a different regional version.
- Apple Home support may have arrived through a later firmware update.
- The integration may show only live video, snapshots or motion alerts.
The Arlo Pro 5S 2K illustrates why model and hub numbers matter: Apple Home support was added later and requires particular Arlo hubs. Do not rely on an old retailer listing or a generic “works with HomeKit” badge.
If recordings or alerts are missing
Check that iCloud+ and the home hub are active, recording is enabled for the camera in Home settings, the camera is not battery-sleeping, the activity zone includes the relevant area, iPhone notifications and Focus settings allow alerts, and the camera has a stable connection. Motion approaching directly toward a camera may be detected less reliably than motion crossing its field of view. False positives and delays can also result from shadows, reflections, headlights, weak Wi-Fi or vendor-cloud interruptions.
Exporting HomeKit Secure Video footage
Do not assume an important clip will remain available indefinitely. HomeKit Secure Video provides up to 10 days of activity history, so export evidence promptly.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the Home app on an iPhone, iPad or Mac.
- Select the camera.
- Use the timeline slider or date navigation to locate the event.
- Tap or click the Share icon.
- Tap or click Next.
- On iPhone or iPad, choose Save Video. On Mac, choose Save to Photos.
- Add further clips if necessary, then finish by choosing Cancel.
The HomeKit Secure Video export guide documents this process. After saving, preserve the original file, note the date and time, and keep a backup away from the camera and home network.
Privacy, placement and legal considerations
Point cameras only where you have a legitimate reason to monitor. Avoid recording neighbors’ homes, private yards, windows or areas where people reasonably expect privacy. Use privacy zones, disable audio where unnecessary, inform household members and workers about indoor cameras, and check state and local rules governing audio recording and surveillance. Never place a camera in a bathroom, and approach bedrooms with exceptional caution.
For outdoor cameras, remember that a wide field of view may capture sidewalks, roads and neighboring property. A privacy zone can reduce exposure, but it may not be perfect in every camera app. Review who can access the camera, whether invited household members can download clips, how long cloud footage is retained and how to delete recordings.
Which one should you buy?
- Want the simplest Apple-native experience? Choose Logitech Circle View for a wired indoor or covered outdoor location, or Eve Cam for a privacy-oriented indoor camera.
- Want a low-cost indoor HomeKit Secure Video camera in the 2024 context? Aqara E1 was the budget pick, but its June 30, 2026 security-support end date makes Aqara G100 the more current alternative.
- Want a front-door camera with a button and chime? Choose Aqara Video Doorbell G4, preferably wired if continuous operation matters.
- Want battery outdoor coverage? Choose Arlo Essential XL if you accept its SmartHub and Arlo cloud ecosystem.
- Want 4K outdoor video? Choose Arlo Ultra 2 if you accept the required hub and paid premium features.
- Want a higher-quality Arlo alternative with Apple Home support? Consider Arlo Pro 5S 2K with one of the specifically supported hubs.
- Want local storage and advanced integration? Consider Aqara G100, Aqara G5 Pro or a wired NAS/RTSP/PoE system.
- Want no cloud dependency at all? Look beyond ordinary HomeKit roundups at PoE cameras, local NVRs and NAS systems. HomeKit Secure Video still depends on iCloud+ and an Apple home hub, while local recording does not automatically eliminate every vendor account or remote-service dependency.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I view a security camera on my iPhone without HomeKit?
Yes. A camera with a supported iOS manufacturer app can provide live view and alerts without Apple Home. HomeKit matters if you want the camera in the Apple Home app, Siri or Apple TV access, household sharing through Apple, or HomeKit Secure Video.

Does an iPhone alone record HomeKit Secure Video footage?
No. HomeKit Secure Video requires a compatible camera, iCloud+ and an Apple home hub such as a HomePod, HomePod mini or Apple TV, subject to current operating-system and regional requirements.
Is HomeKit Secure Video free?
The feature is included with iCloud+, but iCloud+ is paid. In the U.S., Apple lists plans from $0.99 per month for one camera to $9.99 per month for unlimited cameras on the 2TB plan. Camera footage does not count against the plan’s ordinary storage allowance.
Will a HomeKit camera keep recording when the internet goes down?
It depends on the camera and storage method. A camera with local microSD, NAS or hub storage may continue recording if it still has power and local network access. Cloud uploads and remote iPhone viewing normally stop, and a wired camera stops during a power outage unless backed up.
Can HomeKit Secure Video record 24/7?
Do not assume so. HomeKit Secure Video is primarily event-based and provides up to 10 days of activity history. Continuous recording may be available through a camera’s own app, microSD card, NAS or NVR, and battery cameras generally cannot record continuously.

Why does my 2K or 4K camera appear as 1080p in Apple Home?
The manufacturer’s Apple integration may impose a lower resolution. Aqara states that the G3, G100 and other models with higher-resolution sensors can be limited to 1080p in HomeKit Secure Video mode. Check both the native camera specification and the Apple Home specification.
Which camera is best if I do not want a camera-cloud subscription?
For an Apple-focused home, Eve Cam avoids a separate Eve account and cloud subscription, although iCloud+ is still required for HomeKit Secure Video. Aqara cameras with microSD, NAS or RTSP can reduce cloud dependence. Arlo generally reserves cloud recording and advanced detection for Arlo Secure.
How do I save a HomeKit Secure Video clip?
Open the Home app, select the camera, find the event on the timeline, choose the Share icon, select Next, then choose Save Video on iPhone or iPad, or Save to Photos on Mac. Export important footage promptly because the activity history is limited.
The Bottom Line
The best iPhone security camera depends on the Apple experience you actually want. Any camera with an iOS app can be monitored from an iPhone, but only some appear in Apple Home, and fewer support HomeKit Secure Video. Choose Logitech Circle View or Eve Cam for a straightforward Apple-first setup, Aqara G4 for an Apple-compatible doorbell, Arlo Essential XL or Ultra 2 for flexible battery-powered outdoor coverage, and Aqara G100 or G5 Pro for more current local-storage options. Before buying, verify the exact model, hub, resolution in Apple Home, storage method, subscription cost, power-failure behavior and security-support date.
