Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The best fastener depends on which plywood layer you are installing. For structural subfloor sheathing attached to floor framing, use a purpose-designed structural subfloor screw specified for the panel and floor system. For a thinner plywood underlayment installed over an existing subfloor, APA recommends ring-shank or screw-shank nails and directs installers to follow the finish-flooring manufacturer’s instructions. These are different jobs, so do not apply one fastener schedule to both.
First identify which layer you are fastening
A plywood floor may include structural sheathing attached to joists and, above it, a thinner underlayment layer that prepares the surface for finish flooring. Structural sheathing transfers loads to the framing; underlayment creates a suitable surface for the floor covering. Check the project plans and panel markings before buying fasteners: the layer, panel thickness, framing, and floor assembly determine the appropriate fastener and schedule.
For structural subfloor sheathing, choose a purpose-designed screw
Simpson Strong-Tie’s Strong-Drive WSV is a manufacturer example developed for fastening subfloor sheathing. Its product page describes evaluation under ICC-ES AC233 and AC120 and reports that its testing found lateral, shear, and withdrawal values exceeding those of 10d common nails; the manufacturer also reports diaphragm performance meeting or exceeding diaphragms built with 10d nails. Those are manufacturer-reported test results, not an independent comparison. See Simpson Strong-Tie’s WSV product information.
Do not assume that any screw sold for general construction will perform the same way. The available product documentation does not establish universal equivalence between ordinary drywall or deck screws and structural subfloor screws. Select a fastener with documentation for the intended sheathing application, and use the size and installation schedule required by the actual panel, framing, loads, approved floor system, and project documents.
#1 Best Overall
- HIGH-PERFORMANCE SUBFLOOR FASTENING: Strong-Drive WSV Subfloor Screws measure at #9 x 1-3/4 in. while featuring a self-tapping point and optimized thread design for fast driving and strong connections. The design reduces splitting while delivering excellent holding power without pre-drilling.
- CORROSION-RESISTANT COATING: A yellow zinc corrosion-resistant coating helps protect against rust in interior applications. Ideal for subfloor installations where durability and long-term performance are critical in high-humidity or moisture-prone environments.
- FAST & EASY INSTALLATION: The sharp point and aggressive threads drive quickly into wood, reducing installation time and torque. Designed to minimize cam-out and splitting, these screws provide smooth, efficient fastening in plywood and OSB subflooring.
- STRONG GRIP & FLUSH FINISH: The advanced thread geometry provides superior grip and resistance to pull-out. The flat head seats flush for a clean finish, helping eliminate floor squeaks and ensure a tight, secure subfloor connection.
- SIMPSON STRONG-TIE RELIABILITY: At Simpson Strong-Tie, our mission is to provide solutions that help people design and build safer, stronger structures. As a pioneer in the building industry, we have an unmatched passion for problem solving through skillful engineering and thoughtful innovation.
Length is not universal. Simpson Strong-Tie says its 2-inch WSV screws are recommended for Advantech flooring and sheathing; that recommendation should not be generalized to every plywood panel or floor assembly. Confirm the specified length and diameter for your installation in the product and project documentation.
Use spacing only within its stated scope
Simpson Strong-Tie gives 6 inches on center at boundaries and 12 inches on center in the field as a rule of thumb for an unblocked diaphragm. The manufacturer says blocked diaphragms need 15% more screws. These figures are manufacturer guidance for the stated diaphragm conditions, not a universal spacing schedule for every floor. An engineered fastening schedule, project plan, applicable code, panel instructions, or local authority may require something different. Consult Simpson Strong-Tie’s wood construction connector guidance.

For plywood underlayment, follow underlayment guidance
If you are adding a thin plywood layer over an existing structural subfloor, do not automatically use the structural-sheathing screw recommendation above. APA’s builder guidance recommends ring-shank or screw-shank nails for fastening underlayment and points to its Engineered Wood Construction Guide for recommended fasteners and schedules. APA says the fastener length should be approximately the combined thickness of the subfloor and underlayment. Follow the finish-flooring manufacturer’s instructions for the complete assembly. Read APA’s Builder Tips.
Prepare and fasten the underlayment carefully
- Install over a dry, prepared subfloor.
- For maximum stiffness, orient the underlayment face grain perpendicular to the joists.
- Offset underlayment panel ends from subfloor ends by at least one joist space and edge joints by at least 2 inches, unless the finish-floor manufacturer recommends otherwise.
- Do not overdrive or leave fasteners proud; keep heads flush with or slightly below the surface.
Check the panel and the whole floor assembly
A suitable fastener cannot compensate for an unsuitable panel, excessive span, moisture, or poor support. APA explains that a panel’s span rating reflects its maximum support spacing; for APA Rated Sheathing, the second number in the two-number span rating is the subfloor support spacing. Match the panel rating to joist spacing and the intended floor system. See APA’s guidance on plywood and sheathing.

For hardwood flooring, APA’s technical note highlights panel selection, span requirements, installation, and moisture management. Check the floor-covering manufacturer’s requirements as well: fastener choice alone will not correct a weak, wet, uneven, or poorly supported floor. Read APA’s hardwood flooring technical guidance.

A practical selection checklist
- Identify the layer: structural sheathing to framing or underlayment over an existing subfloor.
- Check the assembly requirements: panel type and thickness, joist spacing, framing, loads, project schedule, and local requirements.
- Use application-specific documentation: choose a structural subfloor screw for structural sheathing when specified; for underlayment, consult APA guidance and the finish-flooring instructions.
- Verify fastener details: confirm length, diameter, spacing, material compatibility, and any tool or drive-head requirements for the selected product and assembly.
- Install to the schedule: keep fastener heads flush or slightly below the surface where underlayment guidance applies, and do not substitute a general-purpose screw without supporting documentation.
