If you want the quickest answer: the best rinse aid for most LG dishwashers is Finish Jet-Dry, with Cascade Power Dry close behind. Both are liquid rinse aids, widely available, inexpensive per cycle, and compatible with the automatic rinse-aid dispenser LG expects homeowners to use. If your main problem is mineral spotting from hard water, Lemi Shine Rinse Aid is worth trying. If fragrance-free or plant-based ingredients matter more than price, look at Seventh Generation or Ecover.
That said, rinse aid is only one part of the system. On our kitchen remodel and appliance-installation jobs, we see plenty of LG dishwashers blamed for wet dishes when the real issue is a low dispenser setting, cold first-fill water, clogged filter, poor rack loading, a drain hose problem, or a machine that was not leveled correctly. A $6 bottle of rinse aid can help, but it cannot overcome bad drainage, blocked spray arms, or a dishwasher installed out of pitch.
This guide gives you the practical answer first, then walks through the deeper checks that actually solve drying and spotting complaints.

Best Rinse Aid for LG Dishwashers: The Short List
LG dishwasher guidance is straightforward: use liquid rinse aid in the rinse-aid dispenser to improve drying and reduce water spots. Most LG models have a rinse-aid indicator and an adjustable dispenser setting, so the brand you choose matters less than using the right product consistently and dialing in the dosage.
Here is how we would rank the common options for a typical U.S. homeowner in 2026.
#1 Best Overall
- RINSE AID: Finish Jet Dry Rinse Aid is dishwasher rinse aid product.
- WHAT IS RINSE AID. Tired of unloading a dishwasher full of wet and spotty dishes. The best dishwashing results don’t happen with detergent alone. Rinse aid is an agent that enhances drying and reduces water spots on dishes.
- TACKLES TOUGH RESIDUE: Still seeing hard water marks and residue on your dishes. Finish Jet Dry is specially designed to help prevent residue and spots, giving you shelf-ready dishes
- SHINIER GLASSES and DISHES: Looking for the ultimate shine. Use Jet Dry to protect your glasses and get shinier dishes¹ for your next holiday dinner or party
- FORGET ABOUT WET DISHES: Tired of drying dishes after unloading dishwasher. Jet Dry fits your busy schedule by providing 3X Better Drying vs. detergent alone
| Rinse aid | Best for | Typical 2026 cost | Practical notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Finish Jet-Dry | Best overall first choice | About $4-$9 per bottle; often $0.25-$0.45/oz in larger sizes | Widely stocked, reliable for spotting, and a good baseline before troubleshooting deeper issues. |
| Cascade Power Dry | Best mainstream alternative | About $4-$9 per bottle; often $0.25-$0.45/oz in larger sizes | Good match for homes already using Cascade detergent pods or liquid. |
| Lemi Shine Rinse Aid | Hard-water support | Usually mid-range to premium depending on bottle size and retailer | Useful where mineral spots are the main complaint; severe hard water still needs descaling or water treatment. |
| Seventh Generation Rinse Aid | Fragrance-free preference | Often $0.45-$0.90/oz | Good option for households avoiding dyes and fragrance; availability varies. |
| Ecover Rinse Aid | Plant-based preference | Often $0.45-$0.90/oz | Works well for many users, but usually costs more per ounce than Finish or Cascade. |
For a normal household running the dishwasher 4 to 7 times per week, rinse aid usually costs pennies per cycle. A full dispenser lasts weeks, sometimes longer, depending on the LG model, dispenser setting, cycle selection, and water hardness.
How Rinse Aid Works in an LG Dishwasher
Rinse aid does not scrub food off plates. It does not replace detergent. Its job is to reduce the surface tension of the final rinse water so water sheets off glass, ceramic, stainless flatware, and plastic instead of clinging in droplets. Fewer droplets means fewer mineral spots and better drying.
This matters in LG dishwashers because many modern models use condensation, hybrid drying, Dynamic Dry, Night Dry, Extra Dry, or high-temperature final-rinse features rather than the exposed heating elements older dishwashers used. These systems can work well, but they depend heavily on hot water, rinse aid, proper airflow, and load arrangement.
Glass and ceramic hold heat well, so water evaporates from them more easily. Plastic does not. A plastic food-storage lid may still be wet even when plates and glasses are dry. That is normal physics, not automatically a defect. Rinse aid improves plastic drying, but it will not make lightweight plastic behave like a hot dinner plate.
Our Practical Recommendation
Start with Finish Jet-Dry or Cascade Power Dry
If a homeowner asked our crew what to buy on the way home, we would say this: buy Finish Jet-Dry or Cascade Power Dry in a regular liquid bottle, fill the rinse-aid dispenser, run three normal cycles, and judge the results after that. Do not evaluate it after one quick cycle with a half-loaded rack of plastic containers.
Both products are easy to find at grocery stores, big-box retailers, and home centers. Typical 2026 pricing runs about $4 to $9 per bottle depending on size, multipack pricing, and retailer markup. Larger bottles often land around $0.25 to $0.45 per ounce. That is cheap compared with a service call, which commonly runs $100 to $300 or more before any expensive parts are replaced.

If your glasses come out with chalky white spots, crusty residue around the dishwasher door, or mineral buildup near faucets, you may be dealing with hard water. Lemi Shine Rinse Aid can help in that situation, but it should be paired with basic maintenance. Clean the filter, run a dishwasher cleaner or descaler periodically, and consider water treatment if mineral buildup is heavy throughout the house.
A rinse aid can reduce spotting during the final rinse. It cannot remove a year of scale from spray arms, sensors, heating surfaces, or the sump. In homes with severe hard water, a whole-house softener or point-of-use treatment may do more for the dishwasher than switching rinse-aid brands.
Choose Seventh Generation or Ecover for Fragrance-Free or Plant-Based Priorities
Seventh Generation and Ecover are reasonable options for homeowners who want fragrance-free or plant-based cleaning products. They tend to cost more per ounce, often around $0.45 to $0.90/oz depending on retailer and bottle size. If the dishwasher is otherwise set up correctly, they can perform well. If you are fighting heavy hard-water film, though, start by correcting the water and maintenance issue rather than expecting an eco rinse aid to solve everything by itself.

How to Fill and Adjust the LG Rinse-Aid Dispenser
Most LG dishwashers place the rinse-aid dispenser on the inside of the door near the detergent cup. Open the cap, pour liquid rinse aid slowly until the reservoir is full, wipe spills with a damp cloth, and close the cap firmly. Do not pour rinse aid into the detergent compartment.

Many LG models have an adjustable rinse-aid setting. The exact control sequence varies by model, so check the owner’s manual for your unit. As a field rule, make one change at a time and run several cycles before changing again.
- If dishes are wet or spotted: increase the rinse-aid setting one step.
- If glassware has blue-gray streaks or feels slippery: reduce the setting one step.
- If the rinse-aid light is on: refill the dispenser before troubleshooting other drying issues.
- If you changed detergent recently: give the dishwasher 3 to 5 full cycles before judging the new combination.
Do not assume detergent pods with drying claims eliminate the need for rinse aid. Many LG dishwashers still dry better with liquid rinse aid in the dispenser, especially with plastics, deep mugs, and energy-efficient cycles.
Cost: Rinse Aid vs Service Calls vs Installation Problems
Rinse aid is one of the cheapest dishwasher fixes. A normal bottle costs less than lunch, and the reservoir dispenses a small measured amount each cycle. The cost changes with water hardness, selected dispenser level, cycle frequency, and bottle size, but most households are spending only pennies per wash.
| Item | Typical 2026 U.S. cost | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Common rinse aid bottle | $4-$9 | First fix for wet dishes, spotting, and poor drying. |
| Conventional rinse aid per ounce | About $0.25-$0.45/oz in larger bottles | Finish Jet-Dry and Cascade commonly fall in this range. |
| Eco or fragrance-free rinse aid | About $0.45-$0.90/oz | Seventh Generation, Ecover, and similar options. |
| Dishwasher repair visit | About $100-$300+ | Needed for dispenser failure, heater issues, vent fan problems, sensors, leaks, or control faults. |
| Dishwasher installation | A few hundred dollars to $700-$1,500+ | Higher costs come from plumbing, electrical, cabinetry, drain routing, shutoff valves, or permit work. |
Before paying for repair, check the low-cost items: rinse-aid level, dispenser setting, filter cleanliness, spray-arm blockage, incoming hot-water temperature, and cycle selection. If the dishwasher was recently installed, also check level, drain-hose routing, and the door seal.

Troubleshooting by Symptom
If You See Water Spots
Water spots are usually dried mineral droplets. Fill the rinse-aid dispenser and increase the setting one step if your LG allows adjustment. Run the hot water at the kitchen sink until it is fully hot before starting the dishwasher, especially if the water heater is far from the kitchen. The first fill should not be lukewarm.
If spotting continues, inspect for hard-water signs elsewhere: white buildup on faucets, shower glass, kettle interiors, or around the dishwasher tub. Use a dishwasher cleaner/descaler according to the product directions and your LG manual. If the whole house shows heavy scale, the permanent fix may be water softening, not a different rinse aid.
If Glass Looks Cloudy or Filmy
Cloudy glass is not always a rinse-aid problem. There are three common causes: hard-water minerals, detergent residue, and etching. Mineral film may wipe or soak off. Detergent residue often feels slick or dusty. Etching is permanent microscopic glass damage, often made worse by too much detergent, very soft water, high heat, or repeated aggressive cycles.
If your home has soft water, do not overdose detergent. More detergent does not mean cleaner dishes. It can leave film and shorten the life of delicate glassware. Try a normal cycle, correct detergent amount, full rinse-aid dispenser, and properly spaced glassware.

If Dishes Are Clean but Still Wet
First, separate the load by material. If plates and glasses are dry but plastic lids are wet, the dishwasher is probably doing what modern machines do. Place plastics on the upper rack, angle container lips downward, and avoid nested cups or bowls that trap water.
Next, use the drying options built into your LG model. Depending on the unit, that may be Heated Dry, Extra Dry, Dynamic Dry, Night Dry, or a high-temperature option. Quick and energy-saving cycles often dry worse because they use less heat or shorter final-rinse conditions.
If There Is Odor or Dirty Water
Odor and dirty water point away from rinse aid. Pull and clean the filter. Check the sump area for debris. Look under the sink and confirm the drain hose rises in a proper high loop or connects through an air gap where required. A poorly routed drain hose can allow sink or disposal water to move back toward the dishwasher, leaving odor, film, and contamination.
Installation Details That Affect Drying and Spotting
As builders, we pay close attention to dishwasher installation because small mistakes show up as performance complaints later. The dishwasher should be level side to side and front to back according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If the unit leans, water can collect where it should drain, the door may not seal evenly, and racks may roll strangely.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe hot-water supply matters too. Many dishwashers are connected with a braided stainless supply line and 3/8-inch compression fittings, depending on the shutoff and appliance connection. The shutoff valve should be accessible and should not seep. If the kitchen is far from the water heater, run the sink hot before starting the dishwasher so the first fill is not cold.
The drain hose deserves special attention. Many jurisdictions and manufacturers require either an air gap or a high loop, depending on local code and sink configuration. The goal is simple: prevent dirty sink water from draining back into the dishwasher. Use a proper hose clamp, avoid kinks, and keep the hose routed so it does not sag into a trap for stagnant water.
Electrical work must follow the applicable electrical code adopted in your area. Some installations use a listed appliance cord kit and receptacle; others are hardwired with a junction box, strain relief, and approved connectors. If you are changing wiring, adding a receptacle, or altering a circuit, check local permit rules and hire a licensed electrician where required.
Maintenance Routine for Better LG Dishwasher Drying
A good rinse aid works best in a clean dishwasher. For a normal household, clean the filter about once a month. Heavy cooking households, families scraping less thoroughly, or homes washing greasy pans may need to clean it every 1 to 2 weeks.
Remove the filter assembly according to the LG manual, rinse it under warm water, and use a soft brush with mild dish soap if needed. Do not gouge the screen or force parts together. While the filter is out, inspect the sump for seeds, glass chips, labels, and food debris.

Check spray arms every month or two. The holes should be open, and the arms should spin freely. A toothpick or small brush can clear mineral or food blockage, but avoid enlarging the holes. If spray cannot reach dishes evenly, rinse aid will not save the cycle.
Every 1 to 3 months in hard-water homes, run a dishwasher cleaner or descaler approved for dishwasher use. Follow both the cleaner directions and your appliance manual. Do not casually pour vinegar or alternative chemicals into the machine without checking LG guidance. Some chemicals can affect seals, finishes, and warranty arguments.

Good DIY Checks
Most drying complaints are safe for a homeowner to troubleshoot. Refill the rinse aid, adjust the dispenser one step, clean the filter, clear spray-arm holes, improve loading, and select a stronger drying cycle. Use a flashlight, towel, small level, and thermometer if you want to be thorough. A cup of hot water from the kitchen sink can show whether the dishwasher is starting with hot enough water.
You can also inspect under the sink for an obvious drain-hose sag, loose clamp, or missing high loop. Do not ignore moisture under the toe kick or cabinet. Even a slow dishwasher leak can damage subflooring, cabinet sides, base trim, and finished flooring.
Call a Professional
Hire a pro if the rinse-aid dispenser will not hold liquid, the dispenser door is broken, the dishwasher leaks, the tub does not drain, the unit trips a breaker, or dishes remain cold and wet after a full heated cycle. Those symptoms can involve a failed dispenser, heater, vent fan, thermostat, turbidity sensor, temperature sensor, wiring fault, or control board.
Also call a pro when correcting the installation requires plumbing, electrical, cabinet alteration, or permit work. A straightforward replacement may cost a few hundred dollars. A more involved job with new supply routing, drain corrections, shutoff replacement, electrical changes, countertop brackets, or cabinetry work can reach $700 to $1,500 or more depending on region and scope.
Common Mistakes That Make Rinse Aid Look Like It Failed
The biggest mistake is changing brands without adjusting the dispenser. If the setting is too low, any rinse aid may underperform. If it is too high, you may see streaks or residue. Move one step at a time.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Another common mistake is overloading. Bowls should not nest. Spoons should not stack tightly together. Cup bottoms and container rims should be angled so water can drain. A dishwasher is a spray-and-drain machine; if water pools in a concave lid, it will still be there when the cycle ends.
Quick cycles are another culprit. They are useful, but they are not always the best test of drying performance. For a fair test, use a normal or heavy cycle with the appropriate dry option and a fully filled rinse-aid dispenser.

Finally, do not assume vinegar is a harmless rinse-aid substitute. Vinegar can help with some mineral-cleaning tasks when manufacturer guidance allows it, but it is not the same as rinse aid and should not be used casually in the dispenser. Use the product the appliance was designed to meter: liquid dishwasher rinse aid.
Bottom Line
For most LG dishwashers, buy Finish Jet-Dry first. If you already use Cascade products, Cascade Power Dry is an equally practical choice. Choose Lemi Shine when hard-water spotting is the main issue, and consider Seventh Generation or Ecover if fragrance-free or plant-based formulas are a priority.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why are plastic dishes still wet in my LG dishwasher?
Plastic holds less heat than glass or ceramic, so water evaporates more slowly. Use rinse aid, place plastics on the upper rack, angle items so water drains, and select Extra Dry, Dynamic Dry, Night Dry, Heated Dry, or a high-temperature option if your model has it.
Can I use vinegar instead of rinse aid in an LG dishwasher?
Do not use vinegar as a routine rinse-aid replacement unless your LG manual specifically allows it for that purpose. Liquid dishwasher rinse aid is the product the dispenser is designed to meter.
Can dishwasher installation affect drying or spotting?
Yes. A dishwasher that is not level, starts with cold water, has poor drain-hose routing, lacks a required high loop or air gap, or has cabinet ventilation issues can leave dishes wet, spotted, or smelly even when the rinse aid is good.
