There is no single rectangular outlet box that is best for every wall. For open framing, choose a box designed to mount to the framing; for a finished wall, choose an old-work box intended for retrofit. A seamless result depends on setting the box to the finished wall plane and confirming that its capacity, cable compatibility, gang count, and listing suit the installation. The products below are manufacturer-documented examples, not independently tested winners.

Start with the wall: new work or old work

New work: framing is accessible

When the wall is open, select a box designed to attach to framing and position it with the planned drywall or other finish in mind. The box opening must finish at the correct plane for the surface and device; account for the actual finish thickness and follow the box maker’s installation instructions.

Old work: the wall is already finished

For a retrofit into an existing wall, use a box made for old work and install it as directed. Retrofit clamps or other mounting features must secure the box appropriately to the wall assembly. A box designed for old work is not interchangeable with every new-work box simply because its shape and opening look similar.

What makes an outlet box sit flush?

Flush alignment means the box is set in relation to the finished surface, not just the bare stud or the back of the drywall. If the box sits too far forward or too far back, the device and wall plate may not meet the finished wall cleanly. Check the box’s depth guides, adjustment features, and installation instructions before fastening it. Arlington says its ONE-BOX captive screws can be backed out to reposition a box that is too far forward or back; that feature applies to the specified product line, not all boxes.

Do not assume a box extender will solve every recessed-box problem. Whether an extension ring or extender is compatible and appropriate depends on the existing box, device, wall finish, product instructions, and applicable code. Verify the exact product rather than treating an extender as a universal correction.

Compare boxes on the details that affect fit and safety

  • Wall condition: Is the wall open for framing attachment, or does the box need to be installed through a finished surface?
  • Mounting: Check how the exact model attaches and whether it can be secured for the wall and framing in your project.
  • Finished-surface alignment: Confirm depth guides or adjustment range against the actual wall finish thickness.
  • Volume and depth: Confirm the box has adequate space for the actual conductors and device. Box-fill requirements depend on the wiring configuration and applicable code; the examples here do not establish a fill calculation for a particular installation.
  • Material and wiring system: Check the permitted cable or wiring type. A box’s material does not by itself establish compatibility with every wiring method.
  • Gang count and opening: Choose the configuration for the number of devices and ensure the cover or adapter is compatible.
  • Listing and local requirements: Verify markings and documentation for the exact model, and check the electrical code adopted where the work is being done.

Arlington ONE-BOX: stud-mounted new or old work

Arlington describes ONE-BOX as a nonmetallic box for new or old work that attaches to wood or steel studs with captive screws. Arlington states that the line is UL listed and has a two-hour fire rating. These are manufacturer claims for the specified product family, not proof that every model suits every application or outperforms alternatives. Confirm the exact model and its documentation before selection.

Hubbell / RACO 7820RAC: verify current specifications

The Hubbell listing for RACO 7820RAC identifies a one-gang rectangular nonmetallic cable box and states a depth of 3-3/16 inches and UL listing. Because those details come from listing material rather than a reviewed current product specification, verify the model’s current dimensions, application, and listing with Hubbell before purchasing or installing.
