What a reacher grabber does—and what it does not do
A reacher grabber is a long-handled pickup tool: you operate a handle to open and close jaws around an object without reaching it by hand. People may use one for objects on the floor, on a shelf, or otherwise outside comfortable reach. Product descriptions use terms such as “reacher,” “reacher grabber” and “long handled pick up tool.”
Choose one for retrieving objects within its intended use and stated capacity. It is not a cane, brace or support for body weight. Do not use it to lift heavy or unstable loads, or to retrieve an item if doing so risks a fall or breakage. Follow the specific model’s manual.
How to choose the right tool
Match the length to your position and task
Think about what you need to reach and whether you’ll be sitting, standing or already close to the item. Compare the product’s listed length rather than relying on vague claims such as “extra reach.” A longer tool is not automatically better: it can be harder to control, and accurate jaw placement still matters.

Check the jaw and head
Look for a grip surface suited to the objects you plan to pick up, and check whether the head rotates so you can position the jaws. Confirm that the jaw opening suits the item. A magnet is useful only for small metal objects; a hook may help with a specific pulling task, such as handling clothing.
Consider the handle effort
Most trigger-style tools require squeezing. If that is difficult, look for a product that explicitly describes a non-squeeze actuator or a wrist-extension mechanism. A product description alone cannot establish that a tool will work for a particular person; fit and operating requirements matter.

Weigh handling, capacity and storage together

What independent comparisons can—and cannot—tell you
Consumer Reports’ search-result excerpt describes seven people using products over one month: six lab testers and one tester at home. It says comfort accounted for 35 percent of the testers’ analysis and mentions model-specific limitations. The full page returned a 403 when opened, so its complete ratings, methodology and current rankings could not be verified. That excerpt is not enough to identify a current overall winner.

- What listed length gives you useful reach without making jaw placement difficult?
- Will the jaw grip and opening suit the object? Would a rotating head, magnet or hook help with that specific task?
- Can you comfortably squeeze a trigger, or should you investigate a non-squeeze actuator or wrist-extension design?
- Does the model’s manual cover the object and load you intend to retrieve?
