Before choosing a range hood for a condo, ask your property manager or condo association which exhaust options are permitted and confirm the requirements of your local building department. A hood that vents outdoors may need an approved duct route and building approval; a recirculating model may be an option when outdoor exhaust is not allowed, but code exceptions and other ventilation requirements vary by jurisdiction.
Can you install a ductless range hood in a condo?
Sometimes. The 2024 International Residential Code (IRC) includes an exception under which a listed and labeled ductless hood need not discharge outdoors if it is installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions and mechanical or natural ventilation is otherwise provided. Chicago’s cited provision has a similar exception for Group R occupancies. These are conditional examples, not rules that automatically apply to every condo: the jurisdiction must have adopted the relevant provisions, and other local requirements and building rules still matter. See the 2024 IRC exhaust-systems provisions and the Chicago code provision.
Condo approval is a separate question from code compliance. A new outdoor duct may involve a shared wall, roof, façade, or other common element. Ask the association or property manager what work is allowed, and check with the local authority having jurisdiction before ordering equipment or starting construction.
Should you choose ducted or recirculating?
| Configuration | What it does | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Ducted | Moves cooking exhaust through a duct and discharges it outdoors. | Whether an approved route exists, whether the building permits it, and the duct orientation and dimensions required by the hood. |
| Recirculating (ductless) | Filters air and returns it to the kitchen rather than exhausting it outdoors. | Whether local requirements and building rules allow this setup, whether other ventilation is required, and which model-specific filter or conversion kit is needed. |
These configurations are not interchangeable in either operation or regulatory treatment. A convertible hood can support more than one installation type, but it does not make every setup compliant or guarantee that the parts for each configuration are included. For example, the manufacturer describes the Broan-NuTone F403611 as suitable for ducted or recirculating use, but says its non-ducted filter is sold separately. Check the manufacturer’s F403611 product information.

What to check before buying a condo range hood
- Get building and local approval. Ask whether a duct to outdoors is permitted, whether an existing duct can be used, and what approvals are needed for work affecting shared building elements. Confirm applicable requirements with your local building department.
- Measure the cooking area and opening. Match the hood width to the cooktop and available cabinet space. Check the mounting style, clearances, and installation requirements in the exact hood manual; these details depend on the appliance and model.
- Confirm the exhaust direction and duct. Check whether the hood can exhaust through the top, rear, or another specified route, and whether the existing duct dimensions and path are compatible. Do not assume that a convertible hood includes every part needed for either configuration.
- Check airflow and sound specifications. Compare published figures on a consistent basis and read the installation documentation. A maximum blower CFM figure is a product specification, not proof of the airflow that a particular duct run will deliver.
- Identify filter and upkeep needs. Find out whether recirculation requires a separate charcoal or other non-ducted filter, confirm the exact compatible part, and check how grease filters are cleaned. Consider replacement availability and recurring cost.
- Verify electrical and installation requirements. Review the manual for electrical connection, clearances, accessories, and installation conditions, then confirm who is qualified and authorized to do the work.
How should you compare airflow and noise?
Do not choose by the largest CFM number alone. A manufacturer’s maximum blower rating describes the hood specification; it does not establish the airflow after a particular duct route, fittings, and installation. ENERGY STAR’s Version 4.1 requirements define a working speed in relation to the output on the same duct system used for the maximum-speed test. That is one reason to compare ratings only when their measurement basis is consistent. Read the ENERGY STAR Version 4.1 program requirements.
Sound ratings deserve equal attention, particularly in a compact home where the kitchen may share space with living areas. Sones are useful as published specifications, but compare them in context and do not treat a number from one product page as an independent test against another model.

Manufacturer examples: two convertible under-cabinet hoods
These examples illustrate the kinds of differences to check; they are not a ranking or a claim of tested performance. Specifications are from the manufacturers’ product pages, accessed October 8, 2026.
| Model | Width | Published airflow | Published sound | Recirculation and filter note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Broan-NuTone F403611 | 36 inches | 230 maximum blower CFM | 3.5 sones | Manufacturer describes ducted and recirculating use; non-ducted filter sold separately. |
| Broan 433023 | 30 inches | 220 CFM | 7 sones | Convertible and recirculation-capable; ductless filter/kit not included. |
The F403611 may not fit a 30-inch opening, and its published sound rating is not the same as the 433023’s. Conversely, the published CFM figures alone do not establish how either hood will perform on your installed duct system. Check each model’s current installation instructions, fit, configuration parts, and building approval before purchase. F403611 manufacturer specifications; 433023 manufacturer specifications.

What ENERGY STAR criteria do—and do not—tell you
ENERGY STAR certification applies to qualifying models under program criteria; it should not be inferred from a brand name or a product’s airflow and sound numbers. ENERGY STAR says models must be certified by an EPA-recognized certification body before they can be labeled. Its criteria page lists a minimum efficacy of 2.8 CFM/W and a maximum sound level of 2.0 sones for range hoods at or below 75 W. These are program thresholds, not ratings for every hood. See current ENERGY STAR range-hood criteria.
The cited manufacturer pages identify both example models as not ENERGY STAR certified. The 2.8 CFM/W and 2.0-sone thresholds also appear in the ENERGY STAR Version 4.1 requirements for hoods at or below 75 W under that specification’s stated measurement basis; confirm the applicable program revision when evaluating a model. When airflow can trigger a makeup-air requirement
Some jurisdictions have additional rules for high-capacity exhaust. For example, Chicago’s cited 2021 municipal code amendment requires makeup air for exhaust hoods capable of exhausting more than 400 CFM. That is a Chicago-specific provision, not a nationwide threshold; ask the local authority which rules apply to the proposed installation. Chicago code provision.
Quick Recap
What to verify before installation
- Written building approval for the proposed exhaust path and any work affecting shared elements.
- The locally adopted code edition and requirements confirmed by the local building department.
- Exact hood width, mounting method, clearances, duct route, duct dimensions, and electrical requirements in the model’s installation manual.
- Whether the required recirculation filter or kit is included, its exact compatible part number, and how it is maintained or replaced.
- That airflow and sound figures are being compared on a consistent basis and are understood as manufacturer specifications.
