The best range hood filter is the one designed for your hood and ventilation setup—not a universal “top pick.” Most hoods use a removable metal grease filter; some ductless or recirculating models also need a model-specific charcoal filter to capture odors. Check your hood’s manual and match the replacement by model number, part number, dimensions, and attachment style.
What kind of range hood filter do you need?
Range hood filters serve different purposes. A metal grease filter catches grease and cooking residue. A charcoal or carbon filter is used in some non-ducted, recirculating hoods to address odors. Depending on the hood, you may need one type or both. Broan-NuTone lists grease and non-ducted charcoal filters as separate replacement categories; that product information describes its own catalog, not every brand’s products (Broan-NuTone replacement filters).
Metal mesh grease filters
Aluminum mesh filters are a common washable grease-filter type. Broan-NuTone advises washing its aluminum mesh filters approximately monthly, depending on use; follow the schedule for your own hood rather than treating that interval as universal (Broan-NuTone FAQ).
Baffle grease filters
Baffle filters are another metal grease-filter design. Broan-NuTone describes its baffle filters as designed for longer operation in high-grease conditions, but that does not establish a universal performance advantage over mesh. Samsung says its stainless steel baffle filter can be cleaned by hand or in a dishwasher. Check the hood manual for the correct filter and cleaning method (Samsung range hood filter guidance; Broan-NuTone FAQ).

Charcoal or carbon filters
Some non-ducted or recirculating hoods use a charcoal filter to capture odors. These are generally replacement items, not washable filters: Samsung and Whirlpool state that their charcoal filters should not be washed. Confirm your hood is designed for the specific charcoal filter before buying one (Samsung; Whirlpool filter guidance).
How do you find a filter that fits your range hood?
Compatibility matters more than hood width or a generic description such as “universal.” Manufacturer catalogs list filters with different dimensions and model-specific compatibility. Use the appliance model number and manual to identify the approved part, then check the physical fit.

- Find the hood’s model number and look it up in the owner’s manual or manufacturer parts information.
- Identify whether you need a grease filter, a charcoal filter, or both for your hood’s ducted or recirculating configuration.
- Match the replacement’s listed part number and dimensions. Check the frame, latch, and attachment style where applicable.
- Confirm that the replacement is listed for your exact hood model before ordering.
Dimensions are a useful cross-check, not proof of compatibility. Broan-NuTone’s catalog, for example, lists numerous filter sizes and model descriptions; Samsung directs owners to consult the manual for model-specific charcoal-filter instructions (Broan-NuTone filter catalog; Samsung). For a replacement range hood grease filter or a charcoal filter, use the manufacturer’s compatibility listing or an appropriate parts channel; Samsung directs customers to its parts channel for charcoal replacements.
Can you put a range hood filter in the dishwasher?
Some removable metal grease filters can be washed in a dishwasher, but care instructions vary by hood and filter. Samsung permits dishwasher or hand cleaning for its stainless steel baffle filter. Whirlpool describes washing removable grease filters in a sink with detergent or cleaning them in a dishwasher. Use the method specified in your hood’s manual rather than assuming every metal filter is dishwasher-safe.

Charcoal filters are different: Samsung and Whirlpool say their cited charcoal filters are not washable. Replace them according to the instructions for the exact hood and filter, rather than trying to clean and reuse them.

Cooking frequency, filter type, and hood model affect upkeep. Consult the manual and inspect filters as it directs; do not combine the different manufacturer schedules into one rule.
How should you choose between compatible filters?
Once you have confirmed fit, compare the options that your hood actually supports. Consider the filter’s construction, whether the hood is ducted or recirculating, and how often the filter needs cleaning or replacement. The cited manufacturer information establishes filter categories and care directions, but it does not provide an independent head-to-head test proving that one design captures grease or odors better in every kitchen.
