No dishwasher detergent has been shown by the available sources to be a universal winner for preventing glass etching. The most defensible choice is an automatic dishwasher detergent whose dose you can adjust to your water hardness and appliance instructions. In soft water, using too much detergent can contribute to etching; changing detergent cannot restore glass that is already etched.
What detergent should you use to prevent glass etching?
Choose an automatic dishwasher detergent that is compatible with your dishwasher and follow both the detergent label and the appliance manual. Match the amount to your water conditions rather than assuming that a larger dose cleans better. GE advises using less detergent with soft water and more with hard water, while also noting that too much detergent in soft water can etch glassware (GE Appliances detergent and water-hardness guidance; GE Appliances etching guidance).
Powder is a practical option if you want to adjust the dose in small increments, but the available guidance does not establish that powder prevents etching better than tablets, gel, or another format. There is no supported brand ranking or controlled comparison here. Compare products by whether their format and label fit your machine, and whether you can dose them appropriately for your water.
How to tell removable film from permanent etching
Cloudiness alone does not tell you what is wrong. Mineral deposits or detergent residue can leave a cloudy film; etching is lasting damage to the glass surface. Samsung suggests trying to wipe the film with vinegar or lemon juice as a troubleshooting clue. If it wipes away, residue is more likely; if it does not, etching may be the cause. This is not a guaranteed diagnostic test.

Persistent milky or rainbow-like haze that will not wipe off is consistent with etching. GE says that once glasses are etched, the cloudiness is permanent and cannot be removed (GE Appliances guidance on milky discoloration). Detergent or glass cleaner may help with removable deposits, but cannot reverse etched glass.
Why dishwasher glasses become etched
GE describes etching as a possible result of detergent becoming too concentrated on glass or of too little water in the wash. Its explanation includes excess detergent in soft water, too little detergent in hard water, and silicate compounds that can first leave a rainbow film and later damage the surface. Treat this as GE’s explanation, not a complete account of every glass type or dishwasher.

Miele’s archived glassware guidance also notes that higher temperatures can reduce glass resistance to etching and that very soft water can be reactive. It emphasizes that several variables are involved and prevention is not always possible. Because that document is archived, use the instructions for your own dishwasher as the primary guide (Miele common dishwasher glassware problems).
Hard-water spots and scale are different: they are mineral deposits, mainly involving calcium and magnesium, rather than permanent surface damage. American Cleaning Institute guidance discusses hard-water residue as a cause of spotting on glassware ( Quick wins for a faster PC:
