For copper plumbing, the best push-to-connect fitting is the one approved for your exact pipe type, size, application and installation location—not simply the easiest one to install. SharkBite Max brass fittings are one option for compatible copper, while Watts AquaLock offers a separate family of fittings; ratings and uses vary by model. Check the fitting’s product sheet and local code before choosing.
Start with the copper pipe type and size
SharkBite lists hard-drawn Type K, L and M copper meeting ASTM B88 as compatible. Its FAQ says soft or rolled copper is not compatible, and annealed Type M is limited to 3/8-inch nominal. Do not assume that a fitting that accepts one copper tube will accept every copper tube. Verify the exact fitting’s current instructions and the pipe’s nominal size and actual outside diameter.
Watts describes its AquaLock family as compatible with specified copper, PEX, CPVC and CTS pipe. That family-level description is not a substitute for checking the particular item: for example, the reviewed 3/8-inch 3515 plastic coupling has its own specifications and should not be treated as representative of every AquaLock fitting.
SharkBite’s product information also lists copper compatibility alongside PEX, CPVC, PE-RT and HDPE SDR-9 in supported sizes. Compatibility depends on the fitting and size; consult the SharkBite Max brass tee listing and the exact product documentation.

Compare the exact fitting, not just the brand
A coupling, tee, elbow, adapter and valve solve different layout problems. Before buying, match the configuration to the pipe run, then compare the model-specific material, ratings, approvals and installation conditions.
| Option | What the cited product information establishes | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| SharkBite Max brass couplings and tees | Manufacturer pages list copper among compatible materials. The brass tee listing includes ASSE 1061, CSA B125.3, NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 approvals or listings. | Exact size, fitting configuration, approved pipe types, complete assembly ratings, code acceptance and placement conditions. |
| Watts AquaLock family | Watts describes the family for compatible copper, PEX, CPVC and CTS pipe. | Exact SKU, material, size, temperature and pressure limits, intended service, approvals and warranty. |
| Watts AquaLock 3515-08 plastic coupling | Watts specifies 250 psi maximum working pressure and 75°F maximum working temperature for this model. | Whether those limits suit the particular application. The stated 75°F maximum makes this model unsuitable to assume for hot-water service. |
These examples are a practical shortlist, not a head-to-head test or a ranking. A higher pressure figure alone does not make one fitting the better choice: temperature limits, pipe compatibility and the rating of connected components can determine the usable limit.

- CERTIFIED: Water service coupling is rated to 200 degrees F and 400 PSI with 2K maximum burst
Check pressure, temperature and approvals for the assembly
SharkBite’s FAQ distinguishes generations and products: it gives first-generation fittings a rating of 200 psi and 200°F, and says standard Max configurations are rated to 400 psi. The same manufacturer warns that some assemblies have lower limits because of component limitations. These are manufacturer-stated figures, not a guarantee that every fitting, pipe or assembled system can operate at those values. Confirm the exact SKU’s product sheet and the rating of the connected pipe and components.
For Watts AquaLock 3515-08, the published maximums are 250 psi working pressure and 75°F working temperature for that coupling only. Do not transfer them to another AquaLock product. Watts separately describes its 3555 straight valve as a model for hot and cold water; check that valve’s own compatibility, limits and warranty on the Watts 3555 product page.

For potable-water or hydronic/radiant-heating use, confirm that the specific product is approved for the service and accepted under local requirements. The SharkBite brass tee listing names ASSE 1061, CSA B125.3, NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 372; check the fitting’s current listing and applicable local code rather than assuming every item in a product family has identical approvals.
Account for installation location and service
Manufacturer materials describe SharkBite push fittings for potable water and radiant heating. They are not presented as general-purpose fittings for other lines: SharkBite says not to use its push fittings for gas, air or oil. Its regular couplings, elbows and tees are not dielectric unions. For a different service or a need for electrical isolation, select a product specifically designed and approved for that purpose.

Behind-wall approval does not override local plumbing rules. Check whether the exact fitting and installation are permitted where you live, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for concealed locations. SharkBite’s underground guidance adds conditions: for brass fittings, the manufacturer specifies silicone-tape wrapping, and its installation guide describes additional environmental and soil requirements. Do not treat an underground installation as equivalent to an exposed indoor connection.

SharkBite describes its connection as a stainless-steel grab ring that holds the inserted pipe and an O-ring that seals it. Correct pipe preparation and full insertion are important to that connection. The manufacturer says a specialized tool is not required to make the connection, but recommends a deburr-and-gauge tool to help prepare and mark the pipe.

- Shut off and drain as appropriate. Make the work area safe and follow the fitting’s installation guide for the system.
- Cut the copper square. An angled or uneven end can interfere with proper insertion.
- Clean and deburr the end. Remove debris and sharp edges; scratches or contamination can contribute to leaks.
- Measure and mark insertion depth. Depth varies by fitting size and generation. Use the correct depth reference for the specific fitting, such as the applicable 2024 RWC Piping Systems Installation Guide or 2022 SharkBite Installation Guide.
- Push the pipe fully to the stop. Check that the depth mark shows the pipe reached the required position.
- Pressure-test and inspect before concealment. Follow the product guide and local requirements before closing a wall or otherwise making the joint inaccessible.
Complete soldering before installing a push fitting. Heat conducted through the pipe can damage the fitting’s O-ring. For removal, SharkBite identifies a disconnect clip or tongs; its FAQ says fittings may be reused for testing, but fittings used repeatedly for testing should not be installed permanently.
Weigh warranty and product-specific conditions
SharkBite states a 25-year warranty against manufacturer defects when the fitting is installed according to its instructions and local code is followed. That is a conditional warranty term, not a comparative measure of expected service life. Read the warranty for the product you are considering and retain the documentation needed to establish that its conditions were met.
Watts publishes product-specific information for AquaLock, including separate pages for its coupling and straight valve. Compare those details directly rather than inferring a family-wide warranty or rating from one item: Watts AquaLock family, Watts 3515-08 coupling.
