A reliable “best PTO wood chippers of 2019” ranking cannot be established from the available period documentation: it confirms specifications for one model, Woodland Mills’ WC68 MY2019, but provides no cross-brand tests or complete 2019 lineup. The WC68 manual is useful evidence about that machine, not proof it was the year’s best. For a current purchase, match the chipper to your tractor’s PTO horsepower, the material you expect to chip, and the machine’s feed and hitch requirements.
What can be verified about PTO wood chippers in 2019?
Woodland Mills’ WC68 MY2019 Rev B operator manual, dated June 24, 2019, documents a PTO-driven chipper with three-point hitch transport and hydraulic infeed. It lists a minimum requirement of 20 PTO horsepower and a product weight of 710 lb. Those are specifications for the WC68 described in that manual; they do not establish how it compared with other brands or models.
A Wallenstein catalogue dated 2018 describes a PTO-connected chipper/shredder intended for limbs and branches up to 4 inches. That is historical category context, not confirmation of a complete 2019 lineup or a comparative result. Exact 2019 availability and specifications for other models, including WoodMaxx models, are not established here.
Accordingly, a “best” winner for 2019 would be unsupported: the period material documents one model and offers no independently published head-to-head performance evidence.

How to choose a PTO wood chipper for your tractor
Start with PTO horsepower, not engine horsepower
Use the tractor’s rated PTO horsepower and compare it with the chipper maker’s stated range. Engine horsepower and PTO horsepower are not interchangeable; power available at the PTO can differ. Woodland Mills explicitly advises buyers to check the PTO rating in its wood chipper buying guide.

These values are manufacturer guidance. Confirm the current model specifications and your tractor’s PTO rating before buying; a model’s compatible power range does not mean every tractor in that range can handle every load at maximum speed.
Read capacity claims with the power requirement
Maximum branch diameter is a model-specific limit, not a guarantee of full-speed chipping in all conditions. Woodland Mills’ current WC68 page says a tractor with more than 40 PTO hp is required to chip full 6-inch logs at full infeed speed. That qualification matters if your expected work regularly includes material near the stated maximum.

Choose a capacity based on the branches you actually handle, and check the maker’s power guidance for that material. A larger nominal capacity is not automatically a better fit for a lower-powered tractor or lighter workload.
Compare feed mechanism and workflow
Feed design affects how material enters the chipper and how much of the workflow is manual. Woodland Mills describes hydraulic and gravity-assist approaches; its current WC models use hydraulic infeed. WoodMaxx describes both mechanical auto-feed (WM-8M) and hydraulic auto-feed (WM-8H) variants in its PTO wood chipper material. These product descriptions identify different designs, but do not establish comparative feed speed, chip quality, durability, or ease of use.

Check hitch, PTO connection, weight, and storage
Confirm that the chipper’s three-point hitch arrangement and PTO connection are suitable for your tractor. Consider the machine’s weight alongside the tractor’s lifting capacity and how you will move, store, and position it. The WC68 manual’s 710 lb figure is specific to that documented model; do not assume it applies to other chippers.
Plan for blade service and replacement parts
Ask how blades are maintained and whether model-specific replacements are available. Woodland Mills says its blades can be reversed, resharpened, or replaced, and mentions replacement kits. Match any replacement blade or wear part to the exact chipper model; generic compatibility should not be assumed.

- For a used machine advertised as a 2019 model, confirm its model year and exact configuration from its identification plate and documentation rather than relying on a current product page.
