Blueland Dishwasher Detergent Tablets are a reasonable option if you want tablets the maker describes as plastic-free and made without PVA. That is a manufacturer claim, not an independent cleaning or environmental comparison. If “plastic-free” is a strict requirement, check the tablet film, formula, refill packaging, and carton separately: products can avoid an individual wrapper and still use plastic elsewhere.
What “plastic-free” should mean when you shop
For a strict tablet-level standard, look for both no individual PVA film and no PVA listed in the detergent formula. Then check the rest of the packaging independently: a wrapper-free tablet is not necessarily sold in a wholly plastic-free carton or refill system. “Wrapper-free,” “reduced-plastic packaging,” and “PVA-free” describe different things.
Environmental labels also have defined scopes. The European Commission’s EU Ecolabel criteria for dishwasher detergents set criteria for products seeking that label; the existence of those criteria does not establish that any product below qualifies.

Which one is the best fit?
For a PVA-free tablet claim
Blueland is a plausible starting point because the company says its tablets are plastic-free and made without PVA, and it lists a fragrance-free option. everdrop is another option to investigate where sold: its manufacturer says its CLASSIC tablets have no plastic wrapper or PVA film. Neither claim is an independent verification of the complete packaging system or cleaning performance.
For fragrance-free tablets
Blueland lists a fragrance-free option, and Ecover markets its Zero tablets as fragrance-free. Ecover is a useful reminder to inspect the full package: its UK product page says the carton has a thin plastic lining.

If reduced-plastic packaging is enough
Seventh Generation’s 90% plastic-free packaging claim may interest shoppers focused on packaging reduction, but its ingredient list includes PVA film. It therefore does not meet a strict standard requiring a PVA-free detergent format.
Does plastic-free mean it will clean well?
The available product information does not establish a universal cleaning winner. No independent, controlled head-to-head test of these products is provided here, so brand descriptions such as “enzyme-rich” or “formulated for eco wash” should not be treated as comparative proof. Choose based on the packaging boundary and ingredients that matter to you, then follow the detergent label and dishwasher manual.

Dishwasher salt and rinse aid needs depend on the detergent, appliance, and water conditions. everdrop recommends salt and rinse aid for optimal results, especially in very hard water; Ecover describes its all-in-one tablets as including salt and rinse-aid action. Check your manual and product directions rather than assuming every machine or household needs the same additions.

Water-soluble does not by itself settle the question of what happens to a film in every wastewater or environmental pathway. A 2023 European Commission detergents proposal says dissolvable films used in laundry and dishwasher capsules may not completely biodegrade and notes that regulatory action could follow if scientific evidence supports biodegradability criteria. That is a qualified discussion, not a finding about every product or every environment. The proposal is available through EUR-Lex.

Industry and regulatory accounts do not resolve the issue in the same way, and the information cited here does not support a categorical claim that all PVA either becomes persistent microplastic or never does. Avoid treating “water-soluble” as equivalent to “environmentally harmless,” or assuming that avoiding PVA alone proves a product has lower overall environmental impact.

A quick label-check before you buy
- Tablet film: Is there an individual wrapper, and does the maker identify it as PVA?
- Formula: Does the ingredient list include PVA or polyvinyl alcohol?
- Outer packaging: Check cartons, linings, refill pouches, and any packaging beyond the tablet itself.
- Use conditions: Look for guidance on dosing, water hardness, salt, and rinse aid; follow your dishwasher manual.
- Evidence: Separate manufacturer claims from an independent comparative test or a label with published criteria.
- Market: Confirm current availability and packaging in your country; the cited Ecover page is UK-facing and everdrop’s product page appears European-market.
