There is no single best pizza oven for every cook. The strongest choice depends on where you will use it, whether you want propane simplicity or live-fire cooking, the size of pizza you make, and how much patio space and lifting you can tolerate. For most serious outdoor cooks, the Gozney Arc XL is the best premium gas oven; the Ooni Karu 2 Pro is the most versatile larger multi-fuel option; the Solo Stove Pi Prime is the simplest value choice; and the Ooni Volt 2 is the most compelling dedicated indoor electric option.
This guide synthesizes independent test programs from TechGearLab, Good Housekeeping, Food Network, Tom’s Guide, Which?, and Bon Appétit with current manufacturer specifications. The publisher has not personally tested these ovens.
Quick recommendations
| Best for | Recommended oven | Why it stands out | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premium gas cooking | Gozney Arc XL | Precise lateral rolling flame, 16-inch cooking area, built-in temperature gauge, thick stone, and strong insulation | Expensive and heavy |
| Serious multi-fuel cooking | Ooni Karu 2 Pro | Wood, charcoal, and optional gas; 16-inch capacity; digital temperature hub and food probe | Gas burner costs extra and the oven weighs 62.6 lb |
| Portable multi-fuel cooking | Ooni Karu 2 | 33.6-lb body, wood and charcoal included, optional gas, claimed 950°F maximum | Limited to roughly 12-inch pizzas |
| Value and easy propane cooking | Solo Stove Pi Prime | Simple propane operation, roughly 30 lb, 12-inch opening, and a comparatively low list price | No included thermometer and less cooking area |
| Portable gas cooking | Gozney Tread | 29.7 lb, carrying handles, removable stone, propane burner, and claimed 950°F maximum | Wind can slow preheating |
| Compact portable alternative | Gozney Roccbox | Folding legs, built-in thermometer, insulation, propane compatibility, and optional wood-burner compatibility | Smaller opening and cooking area |
| Indoor electric cooking | Ooni Volt 2 | Indoor countertop design, 850°F maximum, 12-inch capacity, and pizza-style presets | Costly and heavy for a single-purpose appliance |
| Premium indoor electric alternative | Breville Smart Oven Pizzaiolo | Dedicated settings for several pizza styles and a two-minute wood-fired-style cycle | 750°F maximum and no live-fire flavor |
| Outdoor electric cooking | Current Model P Smart Pizza Oven | Quick heat-up, intuitive presets, and even cooking without manual rotation in Bon Appétit’s testing | Large for an indoor countertop appliance and needs a cover outdoors |
| Large patio installation | Gozney Dome Gen 2 or Dome XL Gen 2 | Hybrid fuel, digital temperature monitoring, and capacity for multiple smaller pizzas | Very expensive, heavy, and not intended for casual carrying |
Prices, stock, bundles, and accessories change. US list prices observed during the research ranged from $399.99 for the Solo Stove Pi Prime to $2,799.99 for the Gozney Dome XL Gen 2.
If you are still comparing the category, start with this pizza oven shortlist rather than choosing by maximum temperature alone. A 950°F specification does not guarantee better pizza: heat distribution, recovery between pies, stone temperature, flame control, and ease of launching and turning matter just as much.

How the independent testing was done
The ratings behind these recommendations are not directly interchangeable. Each publication used a different test population, scoring system, and definition of “best.” That explains why TechGearLab selected the Gozney Arc, Bon Appétit selected the Arc XL, Good Housekeeping selected the Ooni Karu 2 Pro, and Tom’s Guide selected the Ooni Karu 2.
- TechGearLab says it has purchased and tested more than 30 ovens since 2021, baking hundreds of pizzas overall and dozens in side-by-side comparisons.
- Good Housekeeping reports testing 20 outdoor ovens and eight indoor models over six years. Its lab made three Neapolitan pizzas in each oven, evaluating maximum temperature, cooking speed, heat retention, and ease of use, with consumer testing for selected models.
- Food Network examined manuals, specifications, construction, setup, weight, dimensions, fuel, stone thickness, and opening width before judging cooking results and usability. Its indoor testing also considered preheat time, thermostat accuracy, infrared-measured stone temperature, launching, rotation, temperature uniformity, storage, cleaning, and maintenance.
- Tom’s Guide followed each manual for assembly, ignition, cooking, and cool-down and used the supplied tools. It tested multiple dough types; in its Karu 2 setup, the stone reached 750°F in 10 to 12 minutes.
- Which? evaluates several pizzas for evenness, heating speed, portability, stability, and recovery. It updated its program in 2026 and warns that scores from earlier versions should not be compared directly with newer scores.
Manufacturer specifications are useful for capacity, fuel compatibility, dimensions, weight, and claimed maximum temperature. They are not the same as independent measurements or a promise that every user will reach the same temperature or cooking time.

Best premium gas pizza oven: Gozney Arc XL
The Gozney Arc XL is the best choice when you want a large, repeatable propane workflow and are willing to pay for a substantial patio appliance. Bon Appétit named it the best outdoor oven overall in its latest update after testing six new models. Its testing found that the single burner and lateral rolling flame offered strong control, good top browning, and fewer burnt crusts than less controlled designs.
Gozney’s US specifications list a 16-inch cooking area, a 950°F maximum, a 20mm removable cordierite stone, a built-in digital temperature gauge, and two-layer insulation. The oven weighs 58.5 lb and had a listed price of $999.99 during this research.
The Arc XL makes the most sense for a homeowner who cooks regularly on a patio, wants to repeat the same style of pizza, and prefers propane over tending wood or charcoal. Its 16-inch capacity is also more forgiving for family meals than a 12-inch portable oven. The trade-off is not only purchase price: you need a stable, noncombustible support and a practical storage plan for a heavy appliance.
A model-matched Gozney Arc XL cover is a sensible ownership accessory if the oven will remain outside. A cover protects storage between uses, but it does not make an unsafe table suitable or permit covering an oven while it is hot.
Best multi-fuel oven for most serious cooks: Ooni Karu 2 Pro
The Ooni Karu 2 Pro is the strongest recommendation for cooks who want wood, charcoal, and optional propane in one larger oven. Good Housekeeping named it best overall. The official product specifications list a 17-inch cooking area, 5.7-inch internal height, 950°F maximum, digital temperature hub, food probe, and 62.6-lb weight. It is designed around pizzas up to 16 inches.
Wood and charcoal provide a more involved live-fire process and can contribute smoke and flavor. Propane is easier to start and control, especially when you want a predictable weeknight cook. The Karu 2 Pro therefore gives you more cooking paths than a gas-only oven, but the flexibility adds setup and ownership complexity.
Propane is not included in the basic multi-fuel configuration. You must buy the compatible gas attachment separately, and compatibility should be checked against the exact Karu generation and the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not assume that a generic burner is safe simply because it physically appears to fit.
For readers specifically shopping this category, the Ooni Karu 2 Pro is a good fit when 16-inch pizzas, live fire, and optional gas matter more than low weight. The smaller Ooni Karu 2 is better if you expect to carry the oven often.
Best portable multi-fuel oven: Ooni Karu 2
The Ooni Karu 2 is the better portable choice for cooks who want solid-fuel flexibility without moving a 60-pound patio appliance. It weighs 33.6 lb, is designed for pizzas up to 12 inches, uses wood and charcoal out of the box, accepts an optional gas burner, and has a claimed maximum of 950°F. Its stone is listed at 15mm.

The Karu 2 is not a “load it and forget it” appliance when used with wood or charcoal. Allow time to establish the fire, bring the stone to temperature, and recover the cooking surface between pies. That involvement is part of the appeal for some cooks and a reason to choose a gas oven for others.
If you want propane convenience, a Karu 2 gas burner can turn the oven into a gas-capable setup, but it is an additional purchase. Verify the burner’s exact model compatibility before ordering.
Best value and easiest gas option: Solo Stove Pi Prime
The Solo Stove Pi Prime is the most approachable choice for someone who wants a comparatively inexpensive, propane-powered outdoor oven. Food Network named it its overall outdoor pick, and Good Housekeeping named it a value pick. Solo Stove lists a $399.99 US price, approximately 30-lb weight, 12-inch opening, 15-minute preheat claim, and temperatures above 950°F.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Its appeal is simplicity: propane starts quickly, avoids ash and firewood storage, and suits a first-time buyer who mainly wants one 12-inch pizza at a time. Good Housekeeping found it small, lightweight, and powerful.
The compromises are equally clear. It does not provide the larger cooking area of the Arc XL or Karu 2 Pro, and Good Housekeeping noted that it does not include a thermometer. Treat the high-temperature figure as a manufacturer claim rather than a guarantee of stone temperature in your location. Wind, ambient temperature, fuel pressure, and preheating time all affect results.
Best portable gas ovens: Gozney Tread and Roccbox
Gozney Tread
The Gozney Tread is the better choice when portability means actually carrying the oven to a campsite, tailgate, or second property. Good Housekeeping named it its portable pick. It weighs 29.7 lb, has carrying handles, a removable stone, a propane burner, and a claimed 950°F maximum.
Wind is an important limitation. Outdoor gusts can extend heat-up time and make flame management less predictable, so place the oven in a sheltered but properly ventilated location. It is outdoor-only; it should not be treated as an indoor countertop appliance.
Gozney Roccbox
The Roccbox is a proven compact 12-inch design with folding legs, propane compatibility, a built-in thermometer, insulation, and a safe-touch silicone jacket. It can also work with an optional wood burner. That combination makes it attractive for users who want a compact oven with more built-in temperature feedback than the Pi Prime.
The smaller opening and cooking area are the price of portability. It is a strong fit for one or two people, but less suitable for hosting a large group or baking multiple pizzas without waiting for recovery.
Gozney sells model-specific accessories, including items such as a Gozney Roccbox wood burner and carrying or storage equipment. Confirm that an accessory is intended for your exact model; covers, burners, stones, and stands are not automatically interchangeable across the range.
Best indoor electric pizza oven: Ooni Volt 2
The Ooni Volt 2 is the most suitable recommendation for an apartment, cold climate, or kitchen-first workflow. Food Network named it its current indoor overall pick. It is designed for indoor use, cooks 12-inch pizzas, reaches a claimed 850°F, and provides Neapolitan, thin-and-crispy, and pan presets. Its electrical system is listed as 120V/1600W, and its weight is 38.8 lb.

Suitable for cutting cake or bread in kitchen or dinning room.
Electric heat eliminates propane connections, smoke, ash, and the need for outdoor weather management. It also makes the oven easier to use when the patio is impractical. The trade-off is price: the listed $699 cost is substantial for a single-purpose countertop appliance. Check the manufacturer’s clearance and electrical requirements before placing it beneath cabinets or on a crowded counter.
The Volt 2 is not a substitute for an outdoor gas, wood, or charcoal oven. It can produce high-heat pizza, but it does not reproduce the same live-fire environment or smoke character.
Premium indoor alternative: Breville Smart Oven Pizzaiolo
The Breville Smart Oven Pizzaiolo is another dedicated indoor electric option. Breville specifies a maximum temperature of 750°F, a two-minute wood-fired-style pizza cycle, and dedicated settings for several pizza styles.
It is a good choice when an appliance-like kitchen workflow matters more than the highest possible temperature. Its controls and presets aim to reduce manual fire management, while its indoor design avoids the ventilation and placement concerns associated with solid-fuel and gas ovens.

The Breville Smart Oven Pizzaiolo is the premium indoor alternative to the Volt 2, particularly for buyers who prefer Breville’s dedicated pizza settings and already have a suitable kitchen-counter location.
Best outdoor electric option: Current Model P Smart Pizza Oven
The Current Model P is worth considering when you want electric convenience but plan to cook outdoors. Bon Appétit selected it as its current outdoor-electric pick. Its testing found quick heat-up, intuitive presets, and evenly cooked Neapolitan and New York pizzas without manual rotation.
The 31-lb body is relatively large for an indoor countertop appliance, so “indoor/outdoor utility” does not mean it is a small appliance to move casually. If stored outdoors, it needs a cover and protection from weather. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for electrical connection, clearances, and outdoor use.

Best large premium oven: Gozney Dome Gen 2 and Dome XL Gen 2
These are patio installations rather than portable appliances. The Dome Gen 2 supports one 16-inch pizza or two 10-inch pizzas. The Dome XL Gen 2 supports one 18-inch, two 12-inch, or three 10-inch pizzas. Both use hybrid fuel and include digital temperature monitoring according to the manufacturer’s specifications.

- MAKE THE BEST PIZZA AT HOME: Elevate your pizza game with our pizza making accessories. Our cordierite stones include steel handles that can also be used upside down as a rack for resting the hot stone. Transform your oven or BBQ into a pizza oven and create crispy crust pizzas just like your favorite Italian pizzeria. Can use as in smokers or RV ovens too.
- DURABLE FOR HIGH HEAT: Our deluxe cooking stones are designed for temperatures up to 1500F (815C). Simply preheat the rectangle stone with your oven or grill. Never put a cold stone in a hot oven. For first use, preheat 30 minutes longer after temperature is reached to prevent raw dough sticking, or alternatively use parchment paper for the first 4 minutes and remove to finish cooking your pizza!
- PRO PIZZA BAKING: Say goodbye to burnt bottoms and uneven cooking. For homemade pizzas or heating up frozen ones, our stone pizza pan for oven ensures even heat distribution for thoroughly cooked pizzas every time.
- EASY TO USE & VERSATILE: Beyond just pizza, our oven stone offers endless possibilities. Use it as bread stone for oven, baking stone for sourdough bread, biscuits, cookies, pastries, and more. The acacia wood pizza peel doubles as a cutting board, charcuterie board, serving tray; while the slicer effortlessly cuts your food cleanly and precisely and has a blade cover for protection.
- UNIQUE FOODIE GIFT: Designed with gift giving in mind, our custom box presents a fun pizza gift. Great idea for housewarming, fathers day gift, anniversary gift, 50th birthday gift etc.
The capacity is useful for hosting. Multiple smaller pizzas can be staged more efficiently than in a compact 12-inch oven, and the larger cooking chamber gives you more room to work. The cost and physical footprint are substantial: observed US list prices were $2,299.99 for the Dome Gen 2 and $2,799.99 for the Dome XL Gen 2.
Plan the installation like an outdoor cooking appliance, not a piece of camping equipment. Confirm the table or stand’s load rating, use a stable noncombustible surface, maintain required clearances, and decide how the oven will be covered and cleaned. These ovens are best moved occasionally, not carried routinely.
Gas, wood, charcoal, or electric?
| Fuel | Best for | Advantages | Costs and complications |
|---|---|---|---|
| Propane gas | Repeatable weeknight cooking and beginners | Fast startup, simple heat adjustment, no ash | Requires correct connection, fuel storage, and outdoor ventilation for outdoor models |
| Wood | Live-fire enthusiasts | Active flame and smoke character | Fire management, ash, fuel storage, and more variable heat |
| Charcoal | Solid-fuel cooking with sustained embers | Useful heat source and live-fire process | More cleanup and temperature management than gas |
| Electric | Apartments, kitchens, and weather-independent use | No fuel handling, smoke, or ash; preset-driven workflow | Needs suitable electrical power and gives no genuine live-fire flavor |
Multi-fuel ovens such as the Karu 2 Pro and Dome Gen 2 trade some simplicity for flexibility. They are not automatically better than gas-only ovens. If you rarely want to tend a fire, the extra fuel options may become unused complexity.
Choose by pizza size and hosting plans
Most compact models are built around 12-inch pizzas: the Karu 2, Solo Stove Pi Prime, Tread, Roccbox, and Volt 2 all fit this general category. A 12-inch oven can be ideal for personal pizzas and small households, but it may become a bottleneck when serving a crowd.
- One or two people: A 12-inch portable oven is usually easier to store and sufficient for individual pies.
- Family meals: Consider the Arc XL or Karu 2 Pro if you want 16-inch pizzas and more working room.
- Frequent hosting: The Dome Gen 2 or Dome XL Gen 2 provides the largest capacity, but requires an appropriate permanent or semi-permanent outdoor setup.
- Multiple dough styles: A larger cooking area and good recovery between pies matter more than the headline maximum temperature.
Accessories that materially improve ownership
pizza peel
A peel is essential for launching and retrieving a pizza. A launch peel helps transfer the uncooked pie onto the stone; a turning peel is useful for rotating a pizza in a high-temperature outdoor oven. A single generic utensil is not always equally good at both jobs.
Budget for a suitable pizza peel before the oven arrives. Match its width and handle length to the oven opening and your available working space.
Infrared thermometer
An infrared thermometer checks the stone surface rather than merely reporting air temperature. That distinction matters because the oven can display a high air temperature while the floor is still too cool—or the floor can be too hot for the dough you are using.
Recommended Free Tools
Food Network used an infrared thermometer in its indoor testing, and Ooni identifies one as a recommended Karu 2 accessory. An infrared thermometer for pizza oven is especially useful for beginners and for ovens without a dependable built-in stone-temperature display.
Cover, stand, and storage
Outdoor owners should plan for a fitted cover, stable noncombustible table or stand, and correct fuel connection. Large Gozney ovens need a support system that can safely bear their weight. The Current Model P review specifically notes the need for a cover when stored outdoors.
Do not cover an oven until it has cooled completely. Do not place a hot oven on an unverified wooden, plastic, or unstable surface. A pizza oven cover protects a cooled appliance from weather; it does not replace safe clearances or a manufacturer-approved stand.
What to check before buying
- Confirm the location. Gas and solid-fuel outdoor ovens must not be used indoors. For electric models, verify whether the specific model is indoor-only, outdoor-capable, or requires weather protection.
- Measure the whole setup. Include the oven body, handles, gas connection, peel clearance, stand, and required ventilation space—not just the listed cooking opening.
- Decide whether you can lift it. Around 30 to 34 lb is portable for many users; 58 to 63 lb is better treated as a patio appliance. Dome models are still more substantial installations.
- Choose your maximum pizza size. A 12-inch oven is not a 16-inch oven with less empty space. The opening and interior dimensions determine what you can launch, turn, and retrieve comfortably.
- Price the complete system. Add a peel, thermometer, cover, stand, fuel, and any optional gas burner. The Karu 2 and Karu 2 Pro do not include the gas burner needed for propane cooking.
- Check the manual before connecting fuel. Use only the specified regulator, hose, burner, fuel type, and connection procedure. If anything is unclear, contact the manufacturer rather than improvising.
- Plan recovery time. A floor that is hot enough for the first pizza may lose heat after launching. Good testing programs evaluate recovery because it affects real hosting performance.
Common mistakes and troubleshooting
The top burns while the base stays pale
The flame or upper heat is overwhelming the floor. Allow more preheating time, check the stone with an infrared thermometer, and reduce or reposition the flame according to the manual. Avoid assuming that a higher air-temperature reading will fix an underheated stone.

The base burns before the toppings finish
The stone may be too hot for the dough or the pizza may be sitting over a very intense heat zone. Move or turn the pizza as appropriate, use a turning peel, and allow the floor to recover to a workable temperature between pies. Flame control is one reason the Arc XL performed strongly in independent testing.
The oven takes much longer to heat outdoors
Wind and cold ambient conditions can extend preheating, particularly for portable gas models such as the Tread. Use a sheltered, compliant location and allow extra time. Never enclose an outdoor oven to trap heat.
The pizza sticks to the peel
Launch promptly, avoid leaving wet dough on the peel while adding toppings, and use enough flour or another manufacturer-compatible dusting method without overloading the oven floor. A launch peel with the correct dimensions is easier to control than an oversized household board.
The fire will not recover between pizzas
Solid-fuel ovens require active management. Add the correct fuel specified by the manual, allow the flame or embers to rebuild, and check the floor temperature before launching again. Do not use unverified pellets, treated wood, or incompatible fuel.

Price and ownership caveat
The list prices observed for this comparison were US prices and are not permanent offers: Solo Stove Pi Prime $399.99; Ooni Karu 2 $449; Ooni Volt 2 $699; Ooni Koda 2 Pro $799; Ooni Karu 2 Pro $849; Gozney Arc XL $999.99; Gozney Dome Gen 2 $2,299.99; and Gozney Dome XL Gen 2 $2,799.99. Retailers may change prices, stock, bundles, and included accessories.
The cost difference between models can also be misleading. A lower-priced oven may need a cover, stand, peel, thermometer, or optional burner before it is ready for the way you intend to use it. Compare the complete installed or working setup rather than the oven body alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best pizza oven overall?
There is no universal winner because test programs use different methods and priorities. The Gozney Arc XL is the strongest premium gas choice, the Ooni Karu 2 Pro is the strongest larger multi-fuel choice, and the Ooni Volt 2 is the strongest dedicated indoor electric choice in this comparison.
Is a 950°F pizza oven automatically better?
No. Maximum temperature is only one specification, and manufacturer claims are not the same as independent measurements. Heat distribution, stone temperature, recovery, flame control, and ease of use can matter more in everyday cooking.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can an outdoor gas or wood pizza oven be used indoors?
No. Outdoor gas- and solid-fuel ovens should not be presented as indoor alternatives because of combustion, ventilation, heat, and fire risks. Choose an oven explicitly designed and approved for indoor electric use.
Do Ooni Karu ovens include the gas burner?
The Karu 2 and Karu 2 Pro support wood and charcoal and can accept an optional gas burner, but the gas attachment is an additional purchase. Verify the exact compatible burner for the specific model.
What size pizza oven should I buy?
Choose a 12-inch model for personal pizzas, small households, and portability. Choose a 16-inch model for larger family pizzas and more working room. For frequent hosting, the Gozney Dome Gen 2 or Dome XL Gen 2 offers substantially more capacity but requires a heavier outdoor installation.
The Bottom Line
Choose the Gozney Arc XL for premium propane control and repeatability; choose the Ooni Karu 2 Pro for wood, charcoal, optional gas, and 16-inch cooking; choose the Solo Stove Pi Prime for straightforward value; choose the Gozney Tread or Roccbox when portability is central; and choose the Ooni Volt 2 for a dedicated indoor electric workflow. The right answer is the oven whose fuel, capacity, location, weight, and accessory costs match how you will actually cook.
