For a cosmetic refresh of a barbecue grill’s exterior, choose paint whose manufacturer specifically approves it for grill exteriors. Rust-Oleum High Heat Ultra is one such option; the manufacturer rates it for temperatures up to 1200°F (648°C). That rating does not make it suitable for grates, food-contact surfaces, or metal directly exposed to open flame.
What paint is suitable for a grill?
Choose a high-heat coating explicitly intended for the grill’s exterior, and check its label against your grill maker’s instructions and the part’s material. A temperature rating alone does not establish that a coating is safe for every surface or compatible with every grill finish.
Rust-Oleum High Heat Ultra is identified by its manufacturer for barbecue grill exteriors and is rated for temperatures up to 1200°F (648°C). This is the manufacturer’s stated resistance, not an independent comparative test. Its documentation excludes metal directly exposed to open flame and surfaces in direct contact with food, such as grill grates.
Rust-Oleum BBQ & Stove is another manufacturer-described option for exterior barbecue grills, also rated up to 1200°F (648°C). The available product information does not establish that either coating performs better, or that either works on every grill material.

Which grill parts should not be painted?
- Cooking grates: Do not use the cited High Heat Ultra coating on surfaces that contact food.
- Metal directly exposed to open flame: The cited High Heat Ultra documentation excludes it, regardless of the product’s temperature rating.
- Other parts with uncertain compatibility: Check the grill manufacturer’s instructions and the exact paint label before coating them.
How to prepare and paint the exterior
- Choose a suitable work area and conditions. Work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Rust-Oleum’s High Heat Ultra technical sheet, revision 051623, specifies an application temperature of 50–90°F (10–32°C) and humidity below 85% for proper drying.
- Clean the surface. Remove dirt, grease, oil, salt, and chemical contaminants. Rinse the surface and let it dry thoroughly.
- Remove loose material. Use a wire brush or sandpaper to remove loose paint and rust. Existing paint should be sound; abrade glossy finishes so the surface is no longer glossy.
- Protect surrounding areas. Cover nearby surfaces to keep spray mist off them. Follow the exact product container’s application directions; the cited High Heat Ultra sheet says not to prime and recommends light coats.
- Let the coating dry and follow its heating instructions. The High Heat Ultra technical sheet says to allow one hour before heating. For use above 500°F, it says heat curing is required and describes a one-hour cure at 450°F to improve performance and durability. These directions apply to that cited product; use the label instructions for the exact paint you buy.
How to handle old paint safely
Scraping or sanding old paint may release lead dust. Rust-Oleum advises using a NIOSH-approved respirator to control lead exposure when removing old paint. Follow the product warnings and use care to contain dust and overspray; do not assume an old coating is lead-free.

| Consideration | What to check |
|---|---|
| Approved use | Does the manufacturer explicitly identify the product for grill exteriors, and does it suit your grill’s material? |
| Heat rating and exclusions | What temperature does the manufacturer state, and does the label prohibit use near flame or on food-contact surfaces? |
| Format and finish | Choose a spray or brush-on format, color, and sheen that suit the part and the work area. |
| Preparation and cure | Check the required surface preparation, application conditions, drying time, and any heat-cure instructions for that exact product. |
