There is no office chair that is comfortable for everyone. The right choice depends on your body size, how long you sit, your desk setup and the support and materials you prefer. TechRadar’s September 10, 2026 roundup says its team has tested 94 office chairs since 2017; separately, it describes a current testing pool of more than 100 models. Its latest picks include the Steelcase Series 2 as best overall, but that ranking is TechRadar’s assessment—not a universal verdict.

TechRadar buying guide editor James Capell calls the Series 2 his top pick for a premium chair he considers surprisingly affordable. That is his judgment, not a clinical finding or a guarantee that it will suit every user.
How to choose a chair that fits
Start with your body and workstation, not the product’s ranking. TechRadar’s test panel includes people from 5’3″ to 6’5″, illustrating the range of users a chair may need to accommodate. Before buying, check the exact model and configuration: two versions of a chair can differ in adjustment options.
#1 Best Overall
- Fully Adjustable Office Chair: Customized chairs, featuring with an adjustable 2D headrest, backrest with 90° to 120° recline, and 3D adjustable armrests for multiple work postures at will and discover unparalleled comfort throughout the workday.
- Adaptable Lumbar Support: Our computer chair lumbar support system adjusts 1.18" forward & backward and 2.16" up & down to precisely match your height and body shape, providing tailored comfort and promoting optimal sitting posture.
- Supportive Mesh: The minimalist mesh backrest molds to your back with responsive support while promoting maximum airflow to keep you cool. Every component is designed with your safety and well-being in mind.
- Comfy Desk Chair Seat: Adapting 3.14" thick high-density foam to desk chair seat，double your comfort in daily work moreover high weight capacity 330 lbs for long-term durability. Wider seat provides a larger load-bearing area, enhancing overall support and sitting ease.
- Flexible Armrests: Move smoothly rounded PU-padded armrests forward or back and swivel them left or right to find the optimal arm position. Flip the armrests up when you want more freedom or to easily slide the ergonomic chair under the desk.
Check the adjustments you will use
- Seat height: Confirm the range lets you sit with your feet flat on the floor and your legs bent at roughly 90 degrees, as TechRadar advises.
- Seat depth: Adjust it so your lower back meets the lower backrest. Verify that the chair offers a depth adjustment if you need one.
- Lumbar support: Look at whether its position or support changes, rather than assuming every chair provides the same fit.
- Armrests: Compare the range and directions of movement. A 4D armrest, such as the feature TechRadar notes on the C7, offers more positioning dimensions than a fixed armrest.
- Tilt and recline: Consider how the chair moves and whether it can hold the position you want. The Series 2, for example, does not have a lockable recline angle, according to the roundup.
- Back support and headrest: Compare backrest coverage and, if a headrest matters to you, whether it adjusts to your body rather than merely being included.
Match the backrest to your sitting habits
Low-, mid- and high-back chairs offer different amounts of backrest coverage; the taller design is not automatically more comfortable. Consider how much support you want during a typical workday and whether the backrest and any headrest align with your body. The roundup’s product notes do not establish a universally best back height, so use fit and adjustability as your guide.
Choose materials for feel and temperature
TechRadar characterizes foam as softer but warmer, while mesh tends to feel firmer and allows more airflow. Those are trade-offs, not rules about what every person will prefer. Think about the room temperature, how long you sit and whether you favor a softer seat or a more breathable back.

- High-Resilience Molded Foam Seat – Won’t Flatten After 1 Year – Instead of budget foam that hardens and sags within months, the seat is built with high-density, high-resilience molded foam that bounces back day after day. It maintains its shape and cushioning far longer, preventing the “bottoming out” discomfort common at this price point
- Adjustable Lumbar, Not a Fixed Afterthought – Unlike flimsy plastic supports that crack or lose tension, this chair features a durable lumbar mechanism that adjusts depth to match your spine’s natural curve. Genuinely relieves lower back pressure during long sitting sessions
- Breathable Mesh Backrest – No Peeling, No Heat Buildup – Say goodbye to flaking faux leather. The high-tension mesh back promotes continuous airflow, keeping you cool in warm environments and eliminating the mess of peeling upholstery. Mesh holds up significantly better over time and looks professional years later
- Anti-Sink BIFMA Certified Gas Cylinder – A common failure in budget chairs: the pneumatic cylinder loses pressure and slowly sinks during use. Our Class 3 BIFMA-certified gas lift is built to hold its height reliably, so your chair stays exactly where you set it—year after year. No more sudden drops or mid-work adjustments
- Heavy-Duty Metal Core Base (330 lbs Capacity) – Thin plastic bases can crack under stress, especially near the cylinder hub. We use a reinforced nylon base with a metal core, providing the durability and peace of mind you need. Smooth-rolling, 360° silent casters glide across hardwood, tile, or carpet without scratching or catching
Judge value beyond the price tag
TechRadar describes roughly $200–$300 as a broad mid-range category, not a current quote for any one model. Prices and stock change, and a chair’s upfront cost alone does not show whether it is a good fit or value.

How TechRadar says it evaluates chairs
TechRadar describes a process that begins with timed unboxing and assembly, followed by assessment of design, materials and construction. The team says it tries chairs as daily drivers for periods that can run up to three months, tests their adjustment controls, and considers fit across a panel of users with varied heights. Its value assessment takes account of ergonomic features, materials, stability, construction, warranty and durability. These are the outlet’s stated methods; they are not a claim of independent testing for this article.
