- Balance capability against carry weight: a broader tool set can be useful, but a heavier tool is less appealing for all-day pocket carry.
- Consider the environment: moisture and saltwater can change blade and corrosion priorities. Marine-specific recommendations should not be treated as universal guidance for construction sites.
- Verify the details that change: prices, stock, warranty terms, and product specifications can vary by market and date.

Leatherman Wave Plus: best broad-use choice
Leatherman’s current US product listing describes the Wave Plus as an 18-tool pliers-based multitool for home fixes, jobsites and weekend projects. It measures 4 inches closed and 6.25 inches open, has a 2.92-inch primary blade and weighs 8.5 ounces. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results.
The tool set includes needle-nose and regular pliers, replaceable wire and hard-wire cutters, an electrical crimper, wire stripper, plain and serrated knives, saw, spring-action scissors, ruler, openers, files, bit drivers and a medium screwdriver. Leatherman says the implements can be opened one-handed, the implements lock except for the plier head, and essential tools are accessible while the tool is folded.

That breadth makes the Wave Plus a sensible choice when you want one tool for a range of small fixes and adjustments. Its compromises are its 8.5-ounce carry weight and the fact that the sheath is sold separately. Leatherman’s US page displayed $129.95 when accessed in 2026; check the listing for the current price and availability. The same page lists a 25-year warranty, but confirm the current terms and geography before purchase.
When a smaller tool makes more sense
Micra for scissors-first, ultralight carry
Advnture describes the keychain-sized Leatherman Micra as weighing under two ounces and having scissors, a knife, tweezers and screwdrivers. It associates the Micra with trail running. That makes it a better fit for light carry and small tasks than for work that depends on substantial pliers or cutters. The weight and description here come from Advnture, not a current official specification check.

Skeletool for a minimalist pliers tool
Advnture gives the Leatherman Skeletool a weight of five ounces and a tool count of seven, associating it with climbing and cycling. It is a more focused carry option than the Wave Plus, not a like-for-like substitute for a full-size tool set.
Bond for hiking
Advnture relays Leatherman’s suggestion of the Bond for hiking and describes it as a 14-function minimalist option. Treat that as brand-provided outdoor guidance rather than independent evidence that it is the best tool for every hiker—or for construction work.

Specialized needs: drivers, heavy use and marine conditions
If screwdriver work is the priority
West Marine identifies the Gerber Center-Drive as a screwdriver-oriented option. That is a recommendation from a marine buyer’s guide, not a comparative construction test. Before choosing any driver-focused multitool, consider whether its driver arrangement and included bits match the fasteners you actually handle.
If the tool will see heavier daily use
West Marine points to the Leatherman Surge for heavier daily use. Its guide does not establish that it is the best choice for every construction worker, so compare its size, weight and tool layout with your own carry needs before committing.

If you work around saltwater
West Marine’s marine guidance recommends the Wave Plus as a starting point, the Charge TTi when improved blade edge retention and corrosion performance matter in saltwater, and SOG compound-leverage pliers for users prioritizing that plier design. It also discusses blade steels such as 420HC and 154CM, corrosion, driver choice and plier leverage. These are marine-specific priorities and guide judgments, not universal standards or lab rankings; assess the conditions in which your tool will be used.

The Leatherman Wave Alpha is a newer model update, not a proven winner in a 2025 comparative test. T3 reported that it launched in October 2025 and described a MagnaCut blade, larger spring-action scissors, thumb studs and contoured G10 scales. T3 listed a US price of $199.95 in its February 5, 2026 article; that is a dated price, so check current availability and cost. Consider it if those updated features justify the premium for your use, rather than assuming a newer model is automatically better for every job.
