Best Multi-Gym: 6 Home-Gym Machines Compared by Type, Space, and Use

The best multi-gym depends on whether you want rod resistance, adjustable cables, a rack-and-cable system, or a traditional multi-station machine. Compare six category-leading options by exercises, resistance, footprint, accessories, and installation demands.

The best multi-gym depends on the machine architecture you actually need. For a compact traditional home gym, the BowFlex Xtreme 2 SE is the strongest all-round pick. For adjustable cable training, choose the REP Arcadia; the Inspire Fitness FTX is a heavier alternative with more included attachments. If you want a power rack, Smith machine, and cables in one structure, the Force USA G3 is the better fit. Larger households and dedicated gyms should look at the Body-Solid EXM3000LPS, while beginners on a tighter budget may prefer the Marcy MWM-988.

Those recommendations are based on manufacturer-published specifications and product configurations, not hands-on testing. Resistance figures, exercise counts, dimensions, included accessories, warranty terms, and availability can vary by country, package, and date.

Quick picks

Best for Model Why it stands out Main compromise
Best compact traditional multi-gym BowFlex Xtreme 2 SE More than 70 listed exercises, a no-change cable system, lat tower, squat station, leg extension, and nominal 210 lb Power Rod resistance. Power Rod resistance feels different from a steel weight stack and requires a much larger workout area than the machine’s static footprint.
Best compact functional trainer REP Arcadia Dual stacks, 32 pulley heights, 81 inches of cable travel, independent cable work, and a compact 55.3-by-35.8-inch front footprint. The base package includes only two D-handles, and the 2:1 pulley ratio means selected stack weight is not handle force.
Best included-accessory functional trainer alternative Inspire Fitness FTX Two 165 lb stacks, 30 swiveling pulley positions, a pull-up bar, and five included accessories. At 544 lb, it is substantially heavier than many compact cable towers.
Best rack-plus-cables system Force USA G3 Combines a power rack, Smith machine, functional trainer, chin-up station, landmine, and plate-loaded training. It needs Olympic plates and considerably more floor space; several expansions are optional.
Best premium multi-station machine for multiple users Body-Solid EXM3000LPS Two 210 lb stacks, leg press, chest press, pulleys, leg stations, pec fly, and abdominal work in a shared multi-station layout. It is approximately 947 lb and 89-by-72-by-84 inches before considering delivery and installation.
Best budget entry point Marcy MWM-988 A straightforward 150 lb-stack machine with upper and lower pulleys, leg developer, preacher pad, and straps. Its published feature list is narrower than a functional trainer or full multi-station gym.

If you are comparing a home gym system by price alone, pause first and identify its architecture. A rod-resistance machine, a selectorized functional trainer, a plate-loaded rack, and a multi-station gym solve different problems.

What type of multi-gym should you buy?

Architecture Best suited to What you gain What you give up
Rod-resistance home gym Beginners, general fitness, and households wanting quick exercise changes. Many guided and cable-based movements in one relatively compact machine. Rod tension is not directly comparable with steel plates or a weight stack, and the resistance curve feels different.
Selectorized functional trainer Users who want presses, rows, flyes, raises, curls, triceps work, and rotational movements from adjustable cable heights. Independent cable arms, fast stack changes, and more freedom of movement than fixed stations. It may not replace a power rack, barbell setup, or every leg-training station. Attachments may cost extra.
Plate-loaded rack and cable system Experienced lifters who want squats, benching, Smith-machine work, landmine movements, and cables. The broadest combination of barbell-style and cable training in one structure. More space, more assembly, Olympic plates, and closer attention to anchoring and clearance.
Traditional multi-station gym Families, multiple simultaneous users, and dedicated home or commercial-style gyms. Several guided stations and a shared layout that can support different exercises at once. High purchase, delivery, assembly, and floor-planning demands.

1. BowFlex Xtreme 2 SE: best compact traditional home gym

The BowFlex Xtreme 2 SE is the best choice here for a buyer who wants one machine to cover general full-body training without changing plates or moving between many stations. BowFlex lists more than 70 exercises, nominal 210 lb Power Rod resistance, a no-change cable pulley system, a lat tower, a four-position lower pulley and squat station, leg extension, an adjustable or removable seat, and several handles, bars, straps, and an ab-crunch harness. The standard resistance can be upgraded to 310 lb and then 410 lb according to the manufacturer. [c001][c002]

Its listed assembled dimensions are 63 by 49 by 83.25 inches, with a maximum user weight of 300 lb. The important planning figure is not the static footprint: BowFlex specifies a recommended workout area of 112 by 150 inches. That difference matters in a spare room, garage, or basement where the machine may fit on paper but the user cannot safely or comfortably reach the cables and stations. [c002]

Choose it if: you value fast exercise changes, guided movement, and broad general-fitness coverage more than the feel of conventional weights.

Do not choose it solely because it says “210 lb.” BowFlex describes the Power Rod figures as estimates and notes that rod resistance can vary with environmental and usage conditions and may degrade after extensive use. A nominal 210 lb rod system is not the same training experience as a 210 lb steel stack or 210 lb of plates. [c001]

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

BowFlex lists a seven-year warranty for the Xtreme 2 SE machine and five years for the Power Rods on its U.S. product page. Confirm the terms for your country and purchase date before relying on them. [c002]

2. REP Arcadia: best compact functional trainer

The REP Arcadia is the better answer when “multi-gym” means adjustable cables rather than a fixed collection of bodybuilding stations. It has 32 height positions, dual 170 lb stacks, 81 inches of cable travel, a built-in multi-grip pull-up bar, integrated storage, and a listed front width of 55.3 inches by 35.8 inches deep. REP says the stacks can be upgraded to 220 lb per side. [c004]

Its 2:1 pulley ratio provides approximately 10 to 85 lb of usable resistance per side in the standard configuration. In practical terms, the cable travels farther and the handle force is approximately half the selected stack number. That can be useful for flyes, lateral raises, cable presses, rows, curls, triceps work, and rotational exercises, but it makes a direct comparison with a 1:1 machine misleading. [c004]

The Arcadia’s limitation is package scope. REP specifies two D-handles in the base configuration, so a buyer who wants a rope, straight bar, ankle strap, or specialized handles should check the exact package and budget for additions. A functional trainer also does not automatically provide the safety arms, barbell supports, bench, or leg stations of a power rack or traditional multi-station gym.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose it if: you have limited floor space and want the greatest variety of adjustable cable angles from a selectorized machine.

3. Inspire Fitness FTX: compact, heavy, and well-equipped

The Inspire Fitness FTX is a strong alternative to the Arcadia for a buyer who wants a compact functional trainer with more accessories included in the published package. It has two 165 lb weight stacks, 30 swiveling pulley positions, a built-in pull-up bar, and a listed footprint of 54 by 40 by 82 inches. Inspire lists the product weight at 544 lb. [c005]

The included accessories are a triceps rope, two deluxe D-handles, a dual-hook curl bar, and a chin/dip belt. That is a more useful starting package than a machine supplied with only basic handles, although you should still verify the current box contents and regional configuration before ordering.

Like the Arcadia, the FTX uses a 2:1 resistance ratio. The 165 lb figure on each stack should therefore not be treated as 165 lb of force at the handle. Its 30 swiveling positions provide cable-angle flexibility, but pulley position count alone does not determine whether a machine suits your body, exercises, or available clearance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspire lists a residential limited-lifetime warranty for the FTX. Read the exclusions and regional terms, particularly if the machine will be installed in a shared, commercial, or business setting rather than a private residence. [c005]

For compatible Inspire weight-stack models, the company also sells a 5 lb add-on weight that it says works with the FTX and several other Inspire functional trainers and multi-gyms. Compatibility should be confirmed before purchase; it is not a universal accessory for every cable machine. [c008]

Choose it if: you want a stable, substantial functional trainer and prefer a more generous included accessory package over the lightest possible machine.

4. Force USA G3: best all-in-one rack and cable system

The Force USA G3 is the most capable choice in this comparison for a lifter who does not want to give up barbell-style training. It combines a power rack, Smith machine, functional trainer, chin-up station, and plate-loaded design. Force USA lists J-hooks, safety spotter arms, a landmine, handles, a pulldown rope, band pegs, collars, and carabiners among the included items. [c006]

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The listed exterior footprint is 78 inches wide by 60.5 inches deep by 87 inches high, and the product weight is 445 lb. Force USA’s comparison material identifies 12 strength-training systems, Westside spacing, 62 adjustment points, and a 2:1 pulley ratio. Optional additions include a low row, leg press, dip station, jammer arms, and leg developer. Those options materially change both the machine’s capabilities and its space requirements, so do not treat them as part of the base package. [c006][c007]

Because the G3 is plate-loaded, plan for Olympic weight plates in addition to the included collars and hardware. A sensible purchase checklist includes enough plates for the exercises you intend to perform, an appropriate bench, and a defined storage location. Check the current package carefully: “plate-loaded” describes the resistance architecture, not necessarily everything needed for a complete barbell workout.

An adjustable weight bench is particularly relevant if the selected G3 package does not include one. Confirm the bench’s dimensions, adjustment range, weight capacity, and compatibility with the rack before ordering; a bench that fits the room may still interfere with cable travel or rack safeties.

Choose it if: you want one substantial structure for squats, benching, Smith-machine work, cable exercises, pull-ups, and landmine training.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Skip it if: you only want quick, guided resistance training in a bedroom or small spare room. Its 78-inch width and 60.5-inch depth are only the starting point for a usable training zone.

5. Body-Solid EXM3000LPS: best premium multi-station machine for multiple users

The Body-Solid EXM3000LPS is built around the traditional multi-station concept rather than the compact functional-trainer format. Body-Solid lists two 210 lb weight stacks and includes a leg press, chest press, high and low pulleys, leg extension, leg curl, abdominal crunch, pec fly, lat bar, low-row bar, and utility strap. [c007]

The manufacturer lists an assembled size of approximately 89 by 72 by 84 inches and a product weight of about 947 lb. It describes the system as supporting multiple users, which is the main reason to consider it over a single compact machine: a family or dedicated gym can benefit from several station-based exercise options without reconfiguring a rack for every movement.

The optional VKR30 vertical-knee-raise attachment can add further station capability, but it is not part of the base package. Allow for the attachment’s actual dimensions and access space only if you purchase it. [c007][c009]

This is not a casual delivery. A nearly 1,000 lb machine affects access routes, floor planning, assembly labor, and the sequence of work in a new or renovated room. Its size makes it more appropriate for a dedicated home gym, larger home, family training area, or commercial-style installation than for a typical spare bedroom.

Choose it if: several people will use the gym, guided stations are more important to you than barbell flexibility, and the room and delivery route can accommodate a very heavy machine.

6. Marcy MWM-988: best budget entry point

The Marcy MWM-988 is a simpler machine for beginners with modest resistance requirements. Its published specification list includes a 150 lb weight stack, upper and lower pulleys, a leg developer, preacher curl pad, and ankle and wrist straps. Marcy lists the unit at 280.5 lb, says it is not intended for commercial use, and states that it ships in three boxes with a two-year limited warranty. [c010]

The important distinction is what the manufacturer does not list for this model: a chest fly, abdominal station, chest-arm row, foot plate, or center pulley. That does not make the MWM-988 a poor entry-level choice; it means it should not be presented as equivalent to a full functional trainer or a premium multi-station system.

Choose it if: you are starting strength training, want a conventional weight-stack layout, and can live with a narrower exercise menu.

Check before ordering: whether the listed dimensions, box count, warranty, and included accessories match the current regional listing. The manufacturer’s “not for commercial use” statement is especially important for gyms installed in businesses, rental properties, or shared facilities.

Premium benchmark: Rogue FM-6

The Rogue FM-6 is better understood as an advanced rack-functional-trainer system than as a compact conventional multi-gym. It combines a power rack with a 2:1 functional trainer and a 1:1 lat-pulldown and low-row configuration. Rogue lists 250 or 300 lb stack options, heights of 91.5 or 101.5 inches, and multiple length and width configurations depending on depth and storage. [c012]

That configuration can make the FM-6 attractive to experienced lifters who want a premium rack and cable setup, but there is no single footprint to quote without knowing the selected configuration. Treat it as a room-design project: choose the height, storage, depth, and cable arrangement first, then calculate clearance and delivery access.

How to compare multi-gyms accurately

1. Compare usable resistance, not headline numbers

A selected stack number is not automatically the force at your hand. On a 2:1 pulley system, the handle commonly receives approximately half the selected stack load, subject to the machine’s pulley path and friction. The Arcadia and FTX both use 2:1 ratios, as do the cited G3 specifications. [c004][c005][c006]

Rod resistance is a separate comparison problem. BowFlex’s Power Rod figure is an estimate influenced by conditions and use, so it should not be ranked directly against a steel stack using the printed pound number alone. Ask whether the movement feels progressive, whether the top-end resistance is sufficient for the exercises you care about, and whether the machine can be upgraded.

2. Measure the workout area, not only the frame

Record the machine’s width, depth, height, and recommended clearance. Then add room for the user to stand, sit, pull cables, load plates, open doors, access storage, and move around the structure. BowFlex’s 112-by-150-inch recommended workout area is a useful warning: its 63-by-49-inch assembled size understates the space needed for actual use. [c002]

For cable machines, cable travel is also part of the usable area. The Arcadia’s 81 inches of travel and the FTX’s swiveling pulley positions affect where the user stands and how far handles can move. A room that fits the frame may still obstruct full-range cable exercises.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Count exercises you will perform, not marketing claims alone

A large exercise count is valuable only when it includes the movements you intend to train and provides a practical range of motion. Make a personal list before buying:

  • Do you need a rack and safeties for barbell squats or benching?
  • Do you need independently adjustable cable heights for flyes, presses, raises, and rotational work?
  • Do you want a lat pulldown, low row, leg extension, leg curl, leg press, or preacher station?
  • Will two people train at the same time?
  • Do you need pull-up, dip, landmine, or band-pegged movements?

This process prevents a machine with many nominal exercises from winning over one that better supports your actual routine.

4. Separate included equipment from optional equipment

Package contents can change the value of a machine. REP specifies two D-handles for the Arcadia base configuration. Inspire lists five accessories with the FTX. Force USA lists substantial hardware with the G3, but its low-row, leg-press, dip, jammer-arm, and leg-developer components are optional. Body-Solid’s VKR30 is also optional. [c004][c005][c007]

Before paying, save the exact product configuration and verify every handle, bar, bench, plate, storage piece, and attachment. A product photograph is not proof that every visible component is included.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Treat delivery and installation as part of the purchase

The FTX is listed at 544 lb, the G3 at 445 lb, the EXM3000LPS at about 947 lb, and Rogue cites approximately 1,600 lb for its FT-1. These figures are not interchangeable safety ratings, but they show why freight delivery, assembly, floor conditions, and access routes need to be planned before ordering. Rogue explicitly states that the FT-1 must be bolted to the floor. [c005][c006][c007][c011]

  1. Measure the route. Check doors, stairwells, turns, ceiling obstructions, elevators, and the final assembly area. For boxed equipment, record the largest package dimensions rather than relying only on the assembled footprint.
  2. Confirm the floor. Do not assume an upper-floor room, timber floor, raised platform, or existing slab is suitable simply because the machine physically fits. A heavy machine adds the weight of the frame, stacks or plates, users, and movement. Obtain the manufacturer’s floor guidance and consult a qualified building professional if the structure or loading path is uncertain.
  3. Plan anchoring. Follow the manufacturer’s anchoring requirements. Do not substitute a gym mat for required bolts or assume a freestanding rack is safe to use without the specified installation.
  4. Protect the finished floor. Suitable rubber gym flooring or an equipment mat can help manage contact with the floor, but the right thickness and coverage depend on the machine, surface, plate use, and installation instructions. Flooring is not a substitute for structural assessment or anchoring.
  5. Allow assembly space. A machine may need to be assembled in a larger open area and then positioned. Keep the manufacturer’s instructions, tools, and service access available after installation.
  6. Check ceiling clearance. Compare the machine height with the finished ceiling, lighting, ductwork, pull-up clearance, and any overhead movement. The FM-6, for example, is offered at 91.5 or 101.5 inches depending on configuration. [c012]

Useful accessories and what to verify

Bench

A functional trainer or rack is often more versatile with a bench, but compatibility matters. An adjustable weight bench should fit between the uprights, support the intended exercises, provide the needed incline or flat positions, and leave enough room for cable travel. Verify weight capacity and dimensions rather than choosing by the word “adjustable” alone.

Plates and collars

The Force USA G3 is plate-loaded, so buyers should budget for Olympic weight plates and confirm the required plate diameter, storage space, and total load. The G3 specifications identify collars among the included items, but collars do not provide the resistance itself. Keep plate storage within the planned footprint and away from the cable path.

Cable attachments

Extra handles can expand a functional trainer, but connector format and intended loading must match. Before buying a cable machine attachment set or triceps rope, check the machine’s carabiner or connector size, the cable end, the attachment’s construction, and whether the movement requires one or two cables. The FTX already includes a rope, D-handles, curl bar, and chin/dip belt, so duplicate accessories may be unnecessary. [c004][c005][c006]

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Warranty, ownership, and configuration checks

Warranty length is only one part of ownership. Record whether coverage is residential or commercial, which components have separate terms, who performs service, and whether the warranty follows the machine if it is moved or resold.

  • BowFlex Xtreme 2 SE: BowFlex’s U.S. page lists seven years for the machine and five years for the Power Rods. [c002]
  • Inspire FTX: Inspire lists a residential limited-lifetime warranty. [c005]
  • Marcy MWM-988: Marcy lists a two-year limited warranty and states that the model is not intended for commercial use. [c010]

For REP, Force USA, Body-Solid, and Rogue, check the current product documentation for the exact model, region, and configuration. Do not assume that a warranty for a home installation covers a business gym, or that the frame and cables have identical coverage.

A practical buying decision

  1. Choose BowFlex Xtreme 2 SE if you want a compact traditional home gym with many guided exercises and minimal setup between movements.
  2. Choose REP Arcadia if adjustable cable height and independent functional-training movements matter most while floor space is limited.
  3. Choose Inspire FTX if you want that same general functional-trainer architecture with a heavy, stable build and more listed accessories in the base package.
  4. Choose Force USA G3 if you want a rack, Smith machine, cables, pull-up work, and landmine training and are prepared to buy plates and manage a larger installation.
  5. Choose Body-Solid EXM3000LPS if multiple users and a station-based layout justify a large dedicated room and a much heavier machine.
  6. Choose Marcy MWM-988 if you are a beginner with modest resistance needs and prefer a simpler, lower-complexity entry point.
  7. Use Rogue FM-6 as a benchmark if your target is a premium rack-functional-trainer installation rather than a conventional compact multi-gym.

Before ordering, save the exact manufacturer page and package list, confirm the dimensions and delivery route, check the required floor and anchoring conditions, and price the accessories that are not included. Retail prices, shipping, stock, and package contents can change, so verify those details at checkout.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 210 lb multi-gym the same as a 210 lb weight stack?

No. The BowFlex Xtreme 2 SE’s 210 lb figure refers to nominal Power Rod resistance, which BowFlex says is an estimate that can vary with conditions and use. A conventional steel stack also cannot be compared directly without considering the pulley ratio. On a 2:1 system, handle force is approximately half the selected stack load.

How much room does a multi-gym need?

Use the manufacturer’s recommended workout area, not just the frame dimensions. BowFlex lists a 112-by-150-inch workout area for the Xtreme 2 SE even though the assembled machine is 63 by 49 by 83.25 inches. Add room for cable travel, users, plate loading, storage, doors, and service access.

Does the Force USA G3 include the weight plates needed to use it?

The G3 is a plate-loaded system, so plan for Olympic weight plates. Force USA lists collars and other hardware among the included items, but collars are not resistance. Verify the exact package and plate-storage requirements before ordering.

Which multi-gym is best for a family or several simultaneous users?

The Body-Solid EXM3000LPS is the clearest fit in this comparison because it is designed around a multi-station layout and includes two 210 lb stacks and several guided stations. It is also approximately 947 lb and 89 by 72 by 84 inches, so the room, floor, delivery route, and installation need to support that choice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a multi-gym be installed upstairs?

It may be possible, but the answer depends on the building structure, machine weight, users, dynamic loading, floor finish, access route, and manufacturer requirements. Do not infer suitability from dimensions alone. Obtain the relevant installation guidance and consult a qualified building professional if floor capacity or anchoring is uncertain.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Buy the BowFlex Xtreme 2 SE for compact, traditional full-body training; the REP Arcadia for adjustable cable work; the Inspire FTX for a heavier functional trainer with more included accessories; the Force USA G3 for rack-and-cable versatility; the Body-Solid EXM3000LPS for a large multi-user gym; and the Marcy MWM-988 for a simpler budget starting point. The right choice is the one whose resistance system, exercise coverage, clearance, floor requirements, and included equipment match the room and the training plan.
