For detailed concrete garden ornaments and craft casts, reusable flexible silicone molds are the best-supported choice: they can reproduce surface detail and release a cast more readily than a rigid mold. For a large, simple shape such as a border, a rigid plywood or melamine form is often more practical.
“Concrete clay molds” can mean either molds for casting concrete or clay used to model a shape or seal a mold box. The available guidance supports choosing a mold by its material and the concrete casting you want to make; it does not establish clay molds as a distinct best category for concrete casting.
Choose a mold for the shape you want to cast
| Mold type | Best suited to | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Flexible silicone | Detailed ornaments, reliefs and repeat casts from a master object | Its flexibility helps with release and reproducing detail. A larger brush-on silicone mold may need a rigid support shell to hold its shape. |
| Rigid plywood or melamine form | Simple, larger shapes such as concrete borders | Build the form to the required geometry. QUIKRETE says melamine’s smooth surface does not need release agent; coat other inner surfaces with oil or another suitable release agent. |
Elkem describes silicone as a material for high-fidelity concrete reproduction, citing low shrinkage, release characteristics and dimensional stability. Its landscaping examples include steppingstones, planter boxes, outdoor fire pits and fire boxes. Its highlighted BLUESIL RTV 3433 is a two-component industrial silicone elastomer, not a verified consumer mold recommendation. See Elkem’s silicone molds for concrete casting.
Use silicone for detail or to copy an existing ornament
A flexible mold is useful when a cast has texture, relief or contours that would be awkward to remove from a rigid form. To make a custom mold from an existing ornament, start with a clean, repaired and dust-free master. Porous materials—including untreated concrete, stone, plaster and wood—may adhere to silicone, so a release spray or sealer may be needed. Test it first on an inconspicuous area.

For a larger ornament, a brush-on silicone layer can be paired with a rigid support shell. The silicone guide describes thickened silicone with an epoxy support shell; the shell keeps the flexible mold supported during casting and handling. Its instructions and performance claims apply to the materials and process it describes, not to silicone molds generally. Read Silicones and More’s ornament mold-making guide for its process and preparation details.
Use rigid forms for simple borders and larger casts
For a straight or otherwise simple border, a rigid form can be easier to build and handle than a flexible mold. QUIKRETE’s project uses 3/4-inch plywood or melamine-coated particleboard with 2×2 lumber. Its instructions call for release agent on non-melamine inner surfaces, settling the concrete by tapping, covering the mold and waiting 48 hours before removal. For maximum strength in that project, QUIKRETE suggests shaded moisture-curing for three to five days. These are project-specific directions, not universal concrete cure times. Follow the instructions for the mix and form you use. Details are in QUIKRETE’s cast concrete border instructions.

- Size : 540 X 280 X 50 mm (21.26 x 11.22 x 1.97 inch)
- Molds are made of ABS plastic thickness 1,9-2 mm. Depending on the geometry of the product wall thickness can form less than the above dimensions.
- With this form you can make a wonderful Garden Gnome statue. Gnome Welcome Statue will give your guest a great big welcome with this gnome sculpture. Endowed with a pointed gnome hat, this uniquely mystic elfin creature promises to lend its magic to home or garden.
- In folklore, gnomes are subterranean spirits who guard the earth's treasures. In psychological terms they symbolize whatever is keeping you from your task of entering and getting to know your unconscious (= earth) so as to discover your inner, true self (= treasure)
Match the concrete mix to the mold and casting thickness
Small molds can be difficult to fill with concrete containing large aggregate. For the company’s described castings less than two inches thick, QUIKRETE recommends its Sand Topping Mix No. 1103, which it says has no large aggregates. That is specific product guidance, not a universal recipe. Check the label for your chosen mix and make sure its aggregate is suitable for the mold’s openings and the casting’s dimensions.

- Prepare the master. Clean and repair the object. For a porous surface, consider a suitable sealer or release agent and test it first in an inconspicuous spot.
- Make and support the mold. Form the silicone around the object according to the mold material’s instructions. Use an external support, such as the plastic ring in QUIKRETE’s demonstration, if needed to keep the mold’s shape.
- Mix the concrete. Follow the concrete product’s package directions; do not assume one mix ratio or recipe applies to every casting.
- Pour and settle it. Pour into the mold, then tap or vibrate it to help reduce trapped bubbles.
- Cure and demold. Follow the product instructions for curing and removal. Avoid pulling a flexible mold away until the cast is ready to handle.
QUIKRETE’s how-to describes this mold-and-cast sequence. It also advises wearing eye protection and waterproof gloves when handling cement-based products. See QUIKRETE’s silicone mold and concrete casting guide.

Plan for outdoor use and safe handling
- Choose for exposure. Outdoor examples establish that concrete casts can be used for landscaping, but they do not compare the weather resistance of retail mold or concrete products. Select a concrete mix and finished system suitable for the intended exposure, and follow their instructions.
- Use release products selectively. Porous masters may need sealer or release agent; rigid forms may need release on non-melamine surfaces. Confirm compatibility with the mold, master and concrete, and test where practical.
- Protect yourself. Follow the concrete label’s safety directions. QUIKRETE specifically advises eye protection and waterproof gloves for its cement-based products.
