1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor most apartments, a compact countertop microwave is the simplest option: it avoids altering cabinetry or kitchen ventilation. Choose by the appliance’s exterior dimensions and required clearances first, then check whether its capacity, turntable and wattage suit the dishes you use. The examples below are manufacturer specifications, not tested rankings.
How to choose a microwave that fits an apartment kitchen
- Measure the space. Record the available width, depth and height, including any overhangs or nearby walls. Compare those measurements with the microwave’s full exterior dimensions, not just its capacity label.
- Allow for ventilation. Check the exact model’s manual or specification sheet for required side and overhead clearance. Add those spaces to your fit check before deciding the unit will fit on a counter or shelf.
- Match the cavity and turntable to your dishes. Capacity describes the interior volume, but it does not guarantee that a particular plate or container will fit. Compare the turntable diameter and cavity dimensions with the items you use most.
- Choose output power for your needs. Wattage is a useful specification to compare, but it alone does not establish cooking speed, evenness or reliability.
- Confirm the installation type. Countertop models are portable appliances. Built-in and over-the-range microwaves can be part of a kitchen’s exhaust arrangement, so replacing or changing one may involve installation and property rules.
Compact microwave examples: dimensions, capacity and power
These two manufacturer-listed models illustrate the trade-off between a smaller cavity and a larger one. Their specifications do not establish which cooks better or lasts longer.
| Model | Capacity and output | Turntable | Published exterior dimensions | Fit considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hotpoint RES0730DMWB | 0.7 cu. ft.; 700 watts | 10.625 inches | Approximately 10.90 inches high × 18.30 inches wide × 13.60 inches deep | Its stated width is relatively narrow, but check depth and height against the actual counter. Hotpoint product specifications. |
| Toshiba ML-EM25P(BS)/CA | 0.9 cu. ft.; 900 watts | 10.6 inches | 19.1 × 16.1 × 11.5 inches | Offers greater listed capacity and wattage in this comparison, but its specified clearances can make the usable counter area larger than the appliance itself. Toshiba specification sheet. |
Dimensions and model availability can change. Check the current manufacturer information and the specific listing before purchasing, and confirm that the model designation matches the specifications you are comparing.
Why clearance matters as much as footprint
A microwave can fit within the counter’s width and depth yet still be unsuitable if air cannot circulate around it as its manufacturer requires. The Toshiba specification sheet for the model above calls for at least 3 inches between the oven and adjacent walls, one side open, and at least 12 inches of space above. Those instructions apply to that specified Toshiba model; they are not a universal clearance rule. Follow the manual for the exact microwave you choose.

When microwave ventilation becomes an installation issue
A portable countertop microwave is different from a microwave installed over a range or integrated with a kitchen exhaust system. Before changing a built-in or over-the-range arrangement in a rental, ask the property manager and check applicable building or lease requirements.
ENERGY STAR’s U.S. EPA technical bulletin, “How to Use Microwaves to Meet Kitchen Exhaust Requirements”, dated August 20, 2024, addresses ENERGY STAR Single-Family New Homes and Multifamily New Construction program criteria. For those programs, covered kitchen ventilation must provide at least 100 CFM of intermittent airflow or 5 air changes per hour of continuous airflow and exhaust directly outdoors. The bulletin advises choosing microwaves that connect to ductwork and says recirculating systems do not meet those program requirements. These are program-specific construction criteria, not universal requirements for every apartment or countertop microwave.
