For a commercial door that can accept the right configuration, dormakaba’s Simplex 5000 is the strongest documented starting point: the manufacturer describes it as a mechanical pushbutton lock with free egress and reports ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 certification for the series. That is a specification-based recommendation, not proof that it is the most secure lock in every setting. Door fit, exit hardware, egress needs and key-control policy determine which lock is appropriate.
Which mechanical combination lock is the best fit?
These locks are not interchangeable. A cylindrical lock, mortise lock, narrow-stile lock and exit-device trim require different door preparations and serve different functions. The documented dormakaba options below are candidates for distinct applications, not a universal ranking.
| Model | Best documented application | Manufacturer-documented features | Fit checks and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simplex 1000 | Cylindrical door applications | Mechanical combination access from the exterior, free egress, keypad programming, weather resistance and a three-year warranty. | Specified for 1⅜- to 2¼-inch-thick doors and 2⅜- or 2¾-inch backsets. Core is not included for the listed interchangeable- or removable-core options. |
| Simplex 5000 | Commercial cylindrical, mortise or exit-trim applications, depending on configuration | Mechanical access with one code and free egress; key-override options; manufacturer-reported ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 certification to A156.2 and A156.13; three-year warranty. | Preparation and door thickness depend on configuration. Exit device is not supplied with trim; confirm the exact device against the manufacturer’s compatibility list. |
| Simplex 8100 | Mortise application | Mechanical operation, free egress, optional 1-inch deadbolt, optional key override, ADA-compliant levers and a three-year warranty. | Specified for 1¾- to 2¼-inch-thick doors, a 2¾-inch backset and standard mortise preparation. |
| Simplex 3000 | Narrow-stile aluminum or glass doors, according to the manufacturer’s search-result description | The description identifies a mechanical pushbutton lock and key override. | Confirm specifications, suitability and warranty directly with the manufacturer before selecting; a full product page could not be verified for this comparison. |
The Simplex 5000 is the only model in this comparison for which the cited documentation reports ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 certification. dormakaba’s specification article, updated September 10, 2026, describes the series as “ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 Certified (A156.2, 156.13); D.O.D. Compliant 5220.22M for supplemental access control; weather resistant, wear tested for extensive use in indoor and outdoor applications.” This is the manufacturer’s statement about the 5000 series; it should not be applied to the other models or treated as an independent attack-resistance test.
What to check before choosing a lock
Match the lock to the door and existing hardware
Identify whether the opening is prepared for a cylindrical lock, mortise lock or narrow-stile hardware. Measure the door thickness and backset, inspect the existing strike and preparation, and confirm handing and function. If selecting exit trim, identify the exit-device make and model and check it against the manufacturer’s compatibility information. Simplex 5000 trim does not include the exit device.
#1 Best Overall
- Easy to install in about an hour!Wear-free keypad material, no clues left for thieves, higher security. Does not lock automatically (This can be a pro or con depending on your needs)
- Slight adjustment to door knob cutout may be needed to accommodate width of lock(Borehole can not less than 1-15/16"). For double bores standard door, this lock must install on the above bore. Size 5-1/2" x 3-1/4", Maximum borehole diameter 2-1/8"
- Suitable for standard prepared doors, maximum borehole diameter 2-1/8" (Suitable for wood or metal door thickness of 35-50mm/1.38-1.96inch), works both left/right handed and inward/outward opening doors.
- 100% Mechanical (no risk of low battery), Stainless Steel deadbolt lock is extra hard (304), you can use passcode or key to lock it, or both, very difficult to pry open.Made of stainless steel #304, enhanced anti-corrosion surface treatment , features 5-15 times higher than zinc material.
- Replace Any Lockset, Neatly & Easily . Combination can be 4-8 digits (no repeats) with tumblers providing over 8,000 options. Please refer to the installation video. Please be noted that the combination code can be used in any order.
Decide how egress and locking should work
Confirm whether people must be able to exit freely and whether the opening needs a latch, a deadbolt or compatible exit-device trim. The cited Simplex models describe free egress; the 8100 offers an optional 1-inch deadbolt. For commercial or life-safety doors, a product feature alone does not establish that an installation meets local requirements.
Choose key override deliberately
Key override availability varies by model and configuration. Check whether the chosen function accepts the desired cylinder or core and whether it is included. The Simplex 1000 listing specifies that the core is not included for its listed interchangeable- or removable-core options. Establish who controls override keys and how they will be managed.

Plan for a shared combination
The cited mechanical models use a single shared access code rather than separate credentials for each person. That avoids batteries and electronic credential systems, but it does not provide individual access records or per-user revocation. Set a procedure for changing the code when someone who knew it should no longer have access.

A mechanical pushbutton lock removes dependence on batteries and electronic credentials, but that alone does not establish resistance to picking, drilling, kicking or other forced entry. The cited product specifications do not provide an independent, side-by-side attack test or comparative security ranking. Treat a lock as one part of a complete opening: the door, frame, strike, hinges, exit hardware, installation and operating requirements all matter.
