The best microwave for a small kitchen is the Panasonic NN-SB458S for most users because it balances a 0.9-cu.-ft. cavity, 900 watts, and compact 19.1-by-14.8-inch dimensions. The GE GCST07N1WSS is smaller, while the Breville BMO650 and Panasonic NN-SF57RM suit quieter operation or unusual door and loading constraints.
A small appliance still needs a surprisingly large installation zone. Countertop dimensions must be combined with ventilation clearance, door-opening space, safe counter setbacks, and the actual size of the plates or containers you use.

Key takeaways
- The Panasonic NN-SB458S is the best general-purpose compact microwave in this shortlist because it combines a 0.9-cu.-ft. cavity, 900 watts, a 10.6-inch turntable, and a 19.1-by-14.8-inch published footprint.
- The GE GCST07N1WSS has the smallest verified exterior footprint here at 17.3125 inches wide, 12.75 inches deep, and 10.1875 inches high, but its 0.70-cu.-ft. cavity and 700-watt output limit cookware flexibility.
- The Breville Compact Wave Soft Close BMO650 is the premium quiet-operation choice, but its published 16.4-inch depth with the handle makes it unsuitable for many shallow counters.
- The Panasonic NN-SF57RM uses a flatbed interior and pull-down door that may work better in a narrow kitchen, even though its 15.35-inch depth is not the shortest in the group.
- Published appliance dimensions are not the same as the required installation zone; clearance above, behind, beside, and in front of the door must be checked against the model’s owner’s manual.

How should you measure a small-kitchen microwave installation?
Measure the complete usable zone, not merely the rectangle described by the product dimensions. Record the counter’s available width, depth, and overhead height, then account for ventilation, the door’s movement, the front edge of the counter, nearby heat sources, and any object that could obstruct the top or sides.
1. Measure the counter and appliance footprint
Measure from wall to counter edge for depth and from adjacent cabinets or walls for width. Compare those measurements with the microwave’s published outside dimensions. A model listed as 14.8 inches deep may require more usable depth once rear ventilation and the recommended setback from the counter edge are included.
2. Add the manufacturer’s ventilation clearance
Clearance is model-specific, so the owner’s manual takes priority over a generic buying chart. GE says, Microwaves need adequate air clearance on each side, the rear and the top to function properly.
GE’s countertop guidance specifies 3 inches on both sides and the top, 1 inch at the rear, and at least 3 inches between the microwave’s front edge and the counter edge to reduce tipping risk. GE also says, Countertop Microwaves are intended for countertop use only.
Read the complete GE countertop microwave air-clearance guidance before treating a tight fit as acceptable.
LG gives a model-specific example of at least 20 centimeters above and 10 centimeters on the left, right, and rear, and recommends an open installation area rather than an enclosed cabinet under that guidance. The LG countertop microwave installation guidance illustrates why the exact manual matters.
3. Check the door-opening geometry
A side-hinged microwave needs clear space beside the unit and in front of the opening. A pull-down door needs unobstructed space in front of the appliance and a counter height that permits comfortable loading. The Panasonic NN-SF57RM is not the shallowest microwave, but Panasonic describes its pull-down-door layout as being designed for narrow kitchens or tight spaces. That can help when the problem is side clearance or door swing rather than front-to-back depth.
Do not place cookbooks or small appliances on top of a countertop microwave when the manufacturer prohibits that arrangement. Also keep the microwave away from a range according to the manufacturer’s instructions; GE’s guidance recommends at least 2 feet from a range.

What is the smallest microwave that fits a dinner plate?
The GE GCST07N1WSS is the smallest verified model in this shortlist, and its 10.75-inch turntable is larger than the 10.6-inch turntables in the Panasonic NN-SB458S and Sharp SMC0912BS. However, a turntable diameter does not guarantee that every dinner plate, bowl, or rectangular container will fit comfortably. Measure the plate’s actual diameter and allow room for it to rotate without touching the cavity walls.

The GE’s 0.70-cu.-ft. cavity is suited to beverages, snacks, reheating, frozen meals, and smaller portions. A 0.9-cu.-ft. model gives more flexibility, but nominal cubic-foot capacity still does not describe the entire usable interior. Turntable placement, cavity height, and interior shape can matter more for a particular container.
| What you need to heat | Most sensible shortlist direction | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Drinks, snacks, and small portions | GE GCST07N1WSS | Smallest published footprint and a 10.75-inch turntable |
| Most everyday plates and reheating tasks | Panasonic NN-SB458S or Sharp SMC0912BS | Both provide 0.9 cu. ft., 900 W, and approximately 10.6-inch turntables |
| Rectangular containers or awkwardly shaped dishes | Panasonic NN-SF57RM | Flatbed loading avoids relying on a rotating turntable |
| More capacity without moving to a large appliance | Panasonic NN-SF57RM | Published 1.0-cu.-ft. capacity and 1,200-watt output |
Which compact microwave has the best power and controls?
The Panasonic NN-SF57RM has the highest published output at 1,200 watts. The Panasonic NN-SB458S, Breville BMO650, and Sharp SMC0912BS are each listed at 900 watts, while the GE GCST07N1WSS is listed at 700 watts. Higher wattage can shorten some heating tasks, but wattage alone does not establish faster, more even, or better cooking.
Cooking results also depend on food quantity, container shape, power modulation, sensor programs, and the controls available to the user. No independent test in this review establishes a speed or even-heating winner.
- Panasonic NN-SB458S: 10 power levels, seven auto-cook menu items, delay start, timer, child safety lock, quick 30-second control, popcorn settings, and keep-warm.
- GE GCST07N1WSS: 10 power levels, auto and time defrost, express cooking, glass turntable, and child lock-out.
- Breville BMO650: one-touch reheat, defrost, popcorn, beverage, and food-menu shortcuts, plus a soft-close door that Breville describes as 80% quieter.
- Sharp SMC0912BS: popcorn, beverage, and reheat settings, child safety lock, and an energy-saver mode listed as using less than 1 watt in the specification sheet.
- Panasonic NN-SF57RM: Genius Sensor 2.0, inverter technology, a flatbed interior, hidden turntable, and pull-down door.
Which model is best for an apartment or dorm?
The GE GCST07N1WSS is the strongest dorm or very small-apartment candidate when counter space is the overriding constraint. Its 17.3125-inch width and 12.75-inch depth are the smallest verified exterior measurements in this comparison, but the buyer should accept the 700-watt output and 0.70-cu.-ft. interior as deliberate compromises.

- Easy Defrost & One touch start: Defrost your frozen food by weight or by time. Quick access to start the microwave from 1 to 6 minutes cooking at full power.
For a dorm or rental, check more than the counter. Confirm that countertop microwaves are permitted, use a properly rated electrical outlet, keep ventilation paths open, and follow the supplied manual. Do not install a countertop-only model inside cabinetry unless the manufacturer expressly approves that installation.
Is the Breville BMO650 worth the extra counter depth?
The Breville BMO650 is worth considering when quieter door operation and one-touch convenience matter more than shallow depth. Breville lists the Compact Wave Soft Close at 0.9 cubic feet/25 liters and 900 watts, with dimensions of 19.1 inches wide by 16.4 inches deep by 11.5 inches high with the handle. Breville’s official BMO650 specifications support the premium-feature case, but the 16.4-inch depth should be measured carefully before purchase.
Breville describes the soft-close door as 80% quieter. That is a manufacturer claim, not an independent noise measurement, so it should not be treated as a tested ranking. The BMO650 is a poor choice for a shallow counter if the handle or required rear clearance would project into a walkway.

What makes the Panasonic NN-SB458S the best overall compact microwave?
The Panasonic NN-SB458S avoids the two most common small-microwave compromises: it is smaller than a full-size countertop appliance while retaining 0.9 cubic feet and 900 watts. Panasonic lists a 19.1-inch width, 11.5-inch height, 14.8-inch depth, 10.6-inch turntable, 10 power levels, seven auto-cook menus, child safety lock, quick 30-second control, and keep-warm functionality on the NN-SB458S product page.
Choose the NN-SB458S when the counter can accommodate its full installation zone and you want a conventional side-hinged, turntable-based microwave for daily reheating and cooking. Choose the GE instead when the published footprint is the deciding constraint, or the NN-SF57RM when flatbed loading and pull-down access solve a specific layout problem.
How does the Sharp SMC0912BS compare?
The Sharp SMC0912BS is the straightforward 0.9-cu.-ft. alternative for shoppers who want conventional reheating, beverage, and popcorn controls without the more specialized flatbed or premium soft-close design. Sharp’s specification sheet lists 900 watts, a 10.6-inch Carousel turntable, child safety lock, and an energy-saver mode using less than 1 watt.

- Two-Step Child Lock Feature: For extra protection and to prevent misuse, all microwave oven manufacturers are asked to follow new safety standard and add a 2-step child lock function

- Easy one-touch express cooking function with 1-6 minutes and +30 seconds functions, and two defrost settings (by weight or by time). With easy auto-cook functions: Popcorn, potato, pizza, frozen veggie, beverage, reheat
- Energy saving Eco mode: Minimize 50% standby power by turning on ECO mode
- Included components: 1 microwave oven, 1 manual instruction book.
The available specification notes do not provide its exterior dimensions here, so do not assume that its 0.9-cu.-ft. capacity means that it will occupy the same counter space as the Panasonic or Breville. Confirm the current manufacturer dimensions, retailer listing, price, and stock before selecting it.

A smaller microwave is not automatically more efficient in every operating condition, and the supplied evidence does not support a reliable annual operating-cost ranking for these five models. The U.S. Department of Energy explains that a typical microwave was used for 70 hours of active food heating per year in its 2013 energy-efficiency context, while electronic controls and displays continued drawing electricity for the remaining 8,690 hours.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy’s 2013 microwave energy-efficiency summary, the standards described reduced standby power by 75% for countertop models and by 51% for over-the-range microwave ovens with convection features. Those figures describe the standards context, not the measured annual cost of the five models in this article.
Do not label any of these standalone residential countertop microwaves ENERGY STAR certified based on the reviewed sources. The ENERGY STAR product index reviewed for this article does not present standalone residential microwave ovens as a listed product category. The DOE rulemaking document also states that there was no active-mode energy-use standard because there was no active-mode test procedure for measuring microwave cooking efficiency. An energy-saver mode can be a useful convenience, but “inverter” should not be treated as automatic proof of ENERGY STAR certification or superior measured efficiency.

Small-kitchen microwave buying checklist
- Measure usable counter width, depth, and height before comparing capacity.
- Add the exact side, top, rear, and front clearances required by the owner’s manual.
- Measure the dinner plate, bowl, or rectangular container you use most often.
- Check whether a side-hinged door or pull-down door suits the available opening space.
- Choose 0.7 cubic feet for minimum footprint only when smaller portions are acceptable.
- Choose 0.9 cubic feet for a stronger everyday balance of size and flexibility.
- Consider a flatbed when rectangular containers or turntable loading are the main problem.
- Treat wattage as one specification, not proof of speed or even heating.
- Confirm child-lock, sensor, defrost, power-level, and one-touch features against the exact model.
- Recheck the manufacturer page, retailer price, seller, stock, model number, and return policy before ordering.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the smallest microwave for a small kitchen?
The GE GCST07N1WSS is the smallest verified model in this shortlist, measuring 17.3125 inches wide, 12.75 inches deep, and 10.1875 inches high. Its 0.70-cu.-ft. cavity and 700-watt output are the trade-offs for the smaller footprint.
What is the best 0.9 cu ft microwave?
The Panasonic NN-SB458S is the best 0.9-cu.-ft. countertop microwave for most buyers because it combines 0.9 cubic feet, 900 watts, a 10.6-inch turntable, 10 power levels, and useful everyday programs. Counter and clearance measurements still determine whether it fits.
Is a flatbed microwave better for a narrow kitchen?
A flatbed microwave can be better for a narrow kitchen when the main problem is loading rectangular containers or avoiding a side-hinged door swing. The Panasonic NN-SF57RM has a flatbed and pull-down door, but its 15.35-inch published depth still requires careful measurement.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Are compact countertop microwaves ENERGY STAR certified?
No. The reviewed evidence does not support an ENERGY STAR certification claim for these standalone residential countertop microwaves. An inverter feature or energy-saver mode should not automatically be interpreted as ENERGY STAR certification or superior measured efficiency.
The Bottom Line
For most small kitchens, choose the Panasonic NN-SB458S if its full clearance zone fits. Choose the GE GCST07N1WSS for the smallest verified footprint, the Breville BMO650 for premium soft-close operation when depth is available, the Sharp SMC0912BS for simple 0.9-cu.-ft. reheating, or the Panasonic NN-SF57RM when a flatbed and pull-down door solve a specific layout problem.
