Choose by the food you cook most: a wide, beveled blade supports burgers and larger pieces; a thin leading edge is designed to slide beneath delicate food; slots can drain grease; and handle length and grip affect control. Manufacturer specifications can help narrow the choices, but they do not establish which turner performs best in independent testing.
What to look for in a metal grill spatula
Blade width and edge
A wider blade gives more support beneath a large burger or piece of fish. A beveled or thin front edge is intended to get under food without lifting it from the side. Some turners bevel more than one edge, which gives you an approach from different angles. These are manufacturer-described design aims, not independently verified performance results.
Handle reach and grip
A long handle helps you work at the grill without leaning over the cooking surface. Check the actual overall length, since “long-handled” is not a precise measurement. Grip details also differ: OXO describes a non-slip grip, Weber a soft-touch handle, and ZWILLING an extra-long handle. Those descriptions do not prove that a particular utensil prevents burns.
Slots, serrations, and cleaning
Slots let grease drain through the blade and can be useful when lifting seafood or other foods where drainage matters. Serrated edges appear on some models and may help with cutting or separating food, but the manufacturer pages do not establish how well they perform. Cleaning guidance is not uniform: some brands list their turners as dishwasher safe, while Napoleon recommends handwashing its Premium Grill Spatula to extend its lifecycle.

Which turner fits your cooking?
For burgers and larger pieces
Start with blade width and a beveled edge. OXO, Weber’s wide models, and Napoleon’s Stainless Steel Wide Spatula are documented wide-blade options. Weber’s US page specifically lists a three-sided bevel; Napoleon describes its wide model as intended for oversized food. Those descriptions help identify design intent, not a proven ranking.

For fish and other delicate food
Look for a thin or beveled leading edge and enough blade area to support the food. Le Creuset lists both a thin front edge and a 3.7-inch width. Victorinox labels its model a slotted fish turner, but its product page’s conflicting material descriptions make it worth checking the current listing before buying.
For grease drainage or added edge features
Choose a slotted blade if drainage is a priority: Le Creuset and Victorinox document slots, and Nexgrill lists a slotted blade. Nexgrill and ZWILLING also list serrated edges. Consider whether you will use that feature and how you plan to clean the utensil, rather than assuming slots or serrations make a turner universally better.
