Consumer Reports’ 2026 summary, updated March 31, 2026, describes lab testing in which stained swatches were washed in two identical machines with each detergent and then air-dried. Its results support two different starting points:

How to choose for your washer and laundry
Confirm HE compatibility
If you own a high-efficiency washer, use detergent marked HE. Whirlpool’s washer guidance says, “Always use only HE High-Efficiency detergent in your High-Efficiency machine.” Follow both the washer manual and detergent label if their instructions address compatibility or dispensing.

Match detergent to the stain
Liquid detergent is often a practical choice for greasy or oily stains and for quick pretreatment. Whirlpool’s guide to detergent forms says liquid generally suits greasy and oily stains better than powder and can be applied directly to a stain. Follow the product directions, and use the washer’s drum or dispenser as specified for your model.
Consider water temperature
Whirlpool says its guidance is that detergents are formulated to clean well above 60°F (15.5°C), while lower temperatures can make dissolving harder, particularly for powders; it recommends liquid for colder-water use. Treat this as manufacturer guidance, not a guarantee for every formula. Follow the detergent label and your washer’s instructions for cold cycles.

Weigh price and personal preferences
Compare the current cost per load rather than bottle price alone, and consider fragrance or skin preferences. The cited Consumer Reports comparison establishes neither a universal best choice nor a winner for fragrance-free use or sensitive skin. Check the product label and current price for the specific option you are considering.
How much detergent should you use?
Use the detergent maker’s recommended amount for the load size and soil level. Concentration varies, so do not assume that the same fill level works across products. Whirlpool warns that excess detergent can cause oversudsing, longer cycles, poor rinsing, and poor cleaning. Measure according to the product label rather than adding extra in pursuit of a better wash.

Keep detergent choice separate from washer maintenance
Detergent cleans laundry; it does not replace washer care. Whirlpool recommends running the Clean Washer cycle monthly and names affresh or another method allowed by the owner’s manual. Maintenance directions vary by model, so consult your washer manual before using a cleaner or choosing a cycle.
