The best kettle for an open fire is one whose manufacturer explicitly approves the exact model and configuration for that use. A metal body alone is not enough: knobs, handles, lids, coatings, and other parts can affect whether it is fire-safe. Choose between a dedicated storm kettle with its own fire base and a conventional camping kettle approved for a campfire, then match its capacity to the water you need.
What makes a kettle suitable for an open fire?
Start with the maker’s instructions for the specific model—not a broad label such as “camping kettle.” For example, Trangia says its camping-series kettles can be used with alternative heat sources including campfires, and specifies that its stainless-knob versions are designed for open-fire cooking. Hario explicitly labels its Outdoor V60 Buono safe for open fire. By contrast, Outdoor Life reports that the tested Sea to Summit X-Pot, with silicone sides and a plastic lid, is not compatible with open fires. Stove suitability does not establish campfire suitability.
Check the whole kettle, including the lid knob, handles, and any non-metal parts. A metal body does not by itself establish that a product is safe to heat over a fire. Follow the instructions for the exact product and configuration.
Storm kettle or conventional camping kettle?
Storm kettles
A storm kettle has a fire base integrated into its design. You light a small fire in the base, and the water heats in the cylinder around it. Kelly Kettle offers Trekker, Scout, and Base Camp sizes with listed boil capacities of 0.6 L, 1.2 L, and 1.6 L, respectively. Its standard inclusions are listed as a steel fire base, carry bag, instructions, and whistle. Check the chosen model’s packed dimensions and current instructions before buying.

Scouts UK notes that small twigs can fuel a storm kettle. This design makes use of gathered natural fuel, so it is a different choice from a kettle you place over an existing campfire. Do not use an old cork bung as a stopper while operating a storm kettle.
Conventional camping kettles
These kettles are heated over a separate heat source. They can be a straightforward option if their manufacturer explicitly permits open-fire use and their capacity and handling suit your needs. Trangia’s stainless-knob camping kettles are designed for open-fire cooking; check the exact SKU because its range also includes plastic-knob versions.

Snow Peak’s CS-115R is another example: its manual includes directions for wood and charcoal fires. It lists a 1.0 L use capacity and 1.3 L full capacity. Those figures and the manual’s fire directions apply to this model, not to camping kettles as a category.
Compare the options by capacity and construction
| Kettle type or example | Capacity or design | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Kelly Kettle Trekker, Scout, Base Camp | 0.6 L, 1.2 L, and 1.6 L boil capacities, respectively; integrated fire base. | Confirm the size, packed dimensions, and current instructions. Remove the cork bung before use; see the Scouts UK storm-kettle safety guidance. |
| Trangia camping kettle | Conventional kettle; the listed 1.4 L version is designed for open-fire cooking when fitted with a stainless knob. | Choose the stainless-knob version and confirm the exact SKU on Trangia’s product pages. |
| Hario Outdoor V60 Buono | 500 ml practical capacity; small gooseneck kettle for pour-over coffee. | Hario identifies this specific model as open-fire safe. It has a phenol-resin lid knob, so follow its instructions rather than generalizing to other Buono models. See Hario’s Outdoor product page. |
| Snow Peak CS-115R | 1.0 L use capacity; 1.3 L full capacity. Stainless steel, brass, and natural wood. | Follow the model’s manual for flame exposure, filling, and handling: Snow Peak CS-115R product page. |
| Sea to Summit X-Pot (tested example) | Collapsible design with silicone sides and a plastic lid. | Outdoor Life reports that the tested X-Pot is not for open-fire use. See Outdoor Life’s camping-kettle review. |
For each candidate, compare its maker-approved heat source, usable or boil capacity, heat-sensitive components, stability when lifting and pouring, packed dimensions and weight, and whether it needs gathered fuel or a separate fire. The best fit depends on where and how you camp, not on a universal ranking.

How to choose the right capacity and style
- Estimate the water you need: consider the number of drinks or meal portions you expect to prepare at once. Use the manufacturer’s stated usable or boil capacity, not an unlabeled assumption about the kettle’s full volume.
- Choose the heating arrangement: a storm kettle brings its own fire base; a conventional camping kettle needs a separate fire and explicit approval for that heat source.
- Check the complete configuration: confirm the knob, handle, lid, and other components match the fire-use instructions for that exact model.
- Consider packing and handling: compare packed size and weight, and make sure you can lift and pour safely with the kettle’s hot handles and lid.
For example, Hario’s 500 ml practical capacity suits a small pour-over setup better than preparing a larger batch, while Kelly Kettle’s listed sizes provide progressively greater boil capacity. Those specifications help narrow a choice, but they do not establish how quickly either kettle will boil water over a particular fire.
Open-fire safety: follow the kettle’s instructions
Storm-kettle precautions
Scouts UK’s September 2025 guidance states: “Cork bungs MUST ALWAYS be removed before using the kettle.” It explains that pressure build-up in older kettles has caused boiling water to spray out, and advises replacing a cork bung with a pressure-relief fitting or whistle. The same guidance says not to block the chimney, to use natural fuels rather than treated wood or plastics, and not to operate where gases cannot escape freely. Check the fitting is compatible with your kettle.

Precautions in the Snow Peak CS-115R manual
For this model, Snow Peak warns against heating the kettle empty, overfilling it, touching it with bare hands while hot, or using flames broader than the base. Its wood- and charcoal-fire directions say to keep flames and coals slightly distanced and not to put fuel on the lid. Use a potholder as directed. These are instructions for the CS-115R; another kettle may have different requirements.
Practical checks before heating
- Read the current manual for the exact model and configuration.
- Do not overfill or heat empty unless the manufacturer’s instructions explicitly permit it.
- Keep hands clear of hot metal and use the heat protection specified by the maker.
- Control flame exposure in accordance with the kettle’s instructions.
- For a storm kettle, keep the chimney clear and use it only where gases can escape.
What to expect from boil times
There is no universal boil time or fuel-efficiency ranking established for these options. Performance depends on the amount and starting temperature of the water, fire size, wind, and kettle geometry. Product capacities and manufacturer-approved use are useful for choosing a model, but they are not comparable test results.
