There is no single “best” eyebolt for every lift. Choose a product whose manufacturer permits the load direction you need, then use its exact working-load chart and installation instructions. For in-line lifting, use an eyebolt rated for that application; for angular lifting, the cited Crosby instructions identify forged shoulder-pattern or machinery eyebolts—not regular-nut eyebolts—as the relevant product types. Diameter alone cannot establish a safe capacity: the angle, attachment, supporting material, and complete load path all matter.
First decide whether the load is in-line or angled
An in-line lift pulls in the direction of the eyebolt shank. An angular lift applies force at an angle to that line. That difference can sharply reduce the allowable working load and determines which eyebolt type may be appropriate.
- In-line: Check that the exact model is rated for the intended application, then follow its load chart and installation instructions.
- Angular: Use only a product whose manufacturer explicitly permits the intended angle and setup. The Crosby Group identifies its forged shoulder-nut and machinery eyebolts for angular-load applications. Its instructions say regular-nut eyebolts are not for angular lifts. Do not infer that another brand or model has the same permission or ratings.
If the pull direction, sling arrangement, or alignment is uncertain, stop and have the lift reviewed by a qualified lifting or engineering professional.
What the Crosby chart shows—and what it does not
The Crosby Group’s Forged Eyebolt Warnings & Application Instructions lists the S-279/M-279 Machinery Eye Bolt, G-277 Shoulder Nut Eye Bolt, and G-291 Regular Nut Eye Bolt. Its inch table lists in-line working load limits from 650 lb for 1/4 in to 65,000 lb for 2-1/2 in; its metric table lists 200 kg for M6 through 29,500 kg for M64. These are ratings for the products covered by that sheet, not a general capacity chart for all eyebolts.

For the products covered by the Crosby sheet, the chart adjusts working load limit according to angle from in-line as follows:
| Angle from in-line | Adjusted working load limit in the Crosby sheet |
|---|---|
| 5° | 100% of rated WLL |
| 15° | 80% of rated WLL |
| 30° | 65% of rated WLL |
| 45° | 30% of rated WLL |
| 90° | 25% of rated WLL |
These are manufacturer-specific chart values, not universal conversion factors. Use the actual chart for the exact product and do not interpolate between listed angles or transfer the reductions to another model unless its manufacturer directs you to do so. A capacity stated without load direction and setup context is incomplete.

Check the whole attachment, not just the eyebolt
The eyebolt’s rating does not establish that the receiving threaded hole, base material, or supporting structure can carry the load. Verify the full load path, including the connection and supporting material, against the requirements for the actual lift. The cited manufacturer sheet does not establish capacity for a particular base or threaded hole.
- Product and traceability: Confirm the manufacturer, exact model, markings, and applicable instructions are identifiable and legible.
- Load direction and WLL: Match the application to the product’s permitted use and chart, including any angle reduction.
- Threads and engagement: Match the thread form and length to the receiving connection, and ensure the threaded shank protrudes enough for full nut engagement.
- Seating: The cited Crosby instructions call for the eyebolt to be screwed down completely and nuts tightened securely, with the shoulder seated flush against the load. Properly sized washers may take up excess protrusion when needed; spacers should still allow flush shoulder contact when tightened. Keep threads clean and never undercut the eyebolt to seat the shoulder. These are directions for the covered Crosby products; follow the exact current instructions for the product being installed.
- Condition and environment: Account for corrosion, wear, deformation, or damage, and follow the product-specific requirements for service and inspection.
Inspect before use and reject damaged hardware
The Crosby instructions call for inspection before use. Do not use an eyebolt showing wear or damage, or one with a bent or elongated eye or shank. Do not machine, grind, or cut an eyebolt. These are pre-use cautions from the cited product instructions, not a complete inspection procedure or a workplace inspection interval for every application.

Include the hoist and support in the lift plan
For construction overhead hoists, OSHA’s 29 CFR 1926.554 requires the manufacturer-determined safe working load to be displayed and not exceeded. It also requires the supporting structure’s safe working load to be at least equal to the hoist’s, and the support to allow free movement and alignment. The rule refers users to manufacturer-prescribed requirements for applicable design, installation, testing, inspection, maintenance, and operation. This is a construction overhead-hoist rule; it does not provide a capacity rating for an eyebolt or its attachment.
OSHA’s 2004 interpretation of 29 CFR 1926.251(a)(4) addresses specified special custom-design lifting accessories: they must be marked with safe working loads and proof-tested before use to 125% of rated load, with the test load determined by accurate and reliable means. That requirement concerns the covered custom accessories; it is not a blanket instruction for users to proof-test every off-the-shelf eyebolt.

For below-the-hook devices, OSHA’s 2002 interpretation states: “Non-engineered devices should not be used – only those devices which meet good engineering design, construction, inspection, and use should be used.” It points to ASME B30.20 or other recognized consensus criteria. Do not treat an unrated or non-engineered device as a bargain substitute for engineered lifting hardware.

ASME B18.15-2015 is titled “Forged Eyebolts.” Its contents address scope, dimensions, threads, shank length, material, finish, designation, quality assurance, marking, and plain and shoulder patterns. The cited source is the 2015 edition; verify the current edition and any errata with ASME before relying on it as current. The standard’s foreword also says ASME does not “approve,” “rate,” or “endorse” any item, construction, proprietary device, or activity.
Quick Recap
Best Value
A practical selection sequence
- Define the lift: Establish the load, pull direction and angle, rigging arrangement, and intended movement before choosing hardware.
- Choose the permitted eyebolt type: For angular lifting, select a forged shoulder-pattern or machinery eyebolt only when its own manufacturer approves the application. Do not use a regular-nut eyebolt for an angular lift.
- Read the exact product chart: Find the model and size, then apply the manufacturer’s rating for the actual load direction. Do not choose by nominal diameter alone.
- Verify the connection and support: Check thread compatibility, full engagement, shoulder seating, receiving material, and the capacity of every part of the load path.
- Install and inspect: Follow the product’s instructions, inspect before use, and remove damaged or unidentifiable hardware from service.
- Escalate uncertainty: If geometry, base material, capacity, or alignment cannot be established, do not lift until a qualified lifting or engineering professional has reviewed the setup.
