Start with the board’s work surface near your elbow, keep your wrist fairly straight during a typical stroke, and adjust until the position feels comfortable. That starting point adapts general sewing-workstation guidance from OSHA; it is not an ironing-specific standard.
How to find a comfortable ironing-board height
OSHA’s guidance for sewing workstations says, “Tables should be adjusted so the work is at elbow height and wrists are kept straight.” It also notes that a low surface can encourage leaning forward, while a high one can raise the shoulders. This is useful ergonomic context, but applying it to ironing is an inference—not a clinically validated ironing measurement or an official ironing rule. OSHA’s sewing station design guidance explains the original context.
- Stand in the posture you normally use for ironing, wearing the footwear you would typically wear.
- Adjust the board until its work surface is around elbow level.
- Make a few pressing movements on a garment. Aim to keep your wrist fairly straight without leaning forward or raising your shoulders.
- Raise or lower the board as needed for comfort, taking account of the garment and the iron or steam generator you use.
These practical adjustments account for differences in stance, posture, garments and equipment; the available sources do not quantify those factors or identify a single best measurement.
Compare adjustment ranges, not just a quoted height
A board is only useful if its adjustment range includes a comfortable working position for you. Manufacturer specifications illustrate how much ranges vary. The figures below are examples, not an industry standard or a recommendation to buy a particular model. Confirm current specifications and local availability with the manufacturer.

Brabantia lists different ranges for its own board sizes: approximately 27–37 inches for sizes A and B, about 30–39 inches for size C, and roughly 31–40 inches for size D. These are manufacturer-specific examples, not a universal sizing system. Its collection also describes board sizes and options including a steam-control board and specialized covers. What else to check when choosing a board
- Work-surface size: A larger surface gives you more room to lay out garments. Brabantia says larger boards reduce the need to move clothes around while ironing.
- Iron compatibility and rest: Check whether the board is designed for a standard iron, a steam generator, or both, and whether its rest is suitable for your equipment.
- Stability and handling: Look for stable feet and practical locking features. Follow the product’s setup, transport and storage instructions.
- Cover fit and steam use: A replacement cover must match the board’s dimensions and intended steam use. Covers are not universally compatible; check the model information before buying.
Choosing the right height range for you
Use your comfortable elbow-level position as a personal reference, then choose a board whose adjustment range reaches it. If you are shopping in person, set the board up and try a few representative pressing strokes. If you are comparing products remotely, check the full adjustment range rather than relying on a label such as “standard” or “large”; the manufacturer examples above show that those ranges can differ substantially.
