A heat diffuser can moderate or spread a gas burner’s heat for simmering and other delicate cooking—but it is not suitable for every stove. Check your range manual before using one: GE Appliances explicitly says not to use a diffuser or similar product on its gas burners. The products below are manufacturer-described options, not independently tested or universally approved picks.
What a gas-stove heat diffuser does
A heat diffuser, sometimes called a simmer plate, is a solid or perforated metal accessory intended to reduce or spread the heat reaching a pan. Manufacturers describe these accessories for tasks such as slow cooking sauces, melting chocolate, keeping food warm, or moderating direct burner heat. Those descriptions explain intended use; they do not establish comparative performance.
Check stove compatibility before choosing one
Start with the manual for your exact range or cooktop, then check the accessory maker’s compatibility information. Guidance varies: GE Appliances says, “Do not use any kind of diffuser or similar product on any gas burner.” That is GE’s instruction for its gas ranges and cooktops, not a universal rule for every brand. If your appliance maker prohibits diffusers, do not use one.
Other stove guidance is not equivalent to diffuser approval. For example, Gorenje advises using cookware of suitable diameters, keeping flames beneath the pan, and using a simmer grid to support very small pans. A simmer grid supports cookware; it is not a heat diffuser, and its mention does not establish that a diffuser is safe.

How to decide whether one is right for your stove
- Find the appliance guidance. Look up your exact range or cooktop manual and search its instructions for “diffuser,” “simmer plate,” or similar wording.
- Follow any restriction. If the manufacturer says not to use a diffuser, do not use one on that appliance.
- Match the accessory to the stove. Confirm the intended cooktop type, placement, grate compatibility, dimensions, and material with the accessory maker; a product marketed for gas is not automatically approved for your range.
- Follow the accessory maker’s operating and care directions. For example, Nordic Ware advises moderate rather than high heat and complete cooling before handling its Heat Tamer.
