Floorplanner is the best overall choice for most DIY room-planning projects in TechRadar’s 2025 roundup. RoomSketcher is the stronger pick for measured floor plans and client-ready presentation, SketchUp is best for flexible professional 3D modeling, Sweet Home 3D is the best genuinely free/offline alternative, and Homestyler is strongest for decorative renders and virtual presentations.
There is no universal winner. A floor-plan tool, decorating app, mobile scanner, 3D modeler, and architectural design system solve different problems. Choose by the output you need—an attractive concept, a dimensioned plan, a construction workflow, or a polished client presentation.

Quick verdict
| Best for | Recommended tool | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Most DIY users | Floorplanner | Fast browser-based planning, drag-and-drop furniture, a free entry tier, and optional paid project upgrades. |
| Accurate-looking floor plans and client presentation | RoomSketcher | Measured 2D plans, scale printing, branding, 3D photos, 360 views, and Live 3D. |
| Professional 3D modeling | SketchUp | Flexible custom modeling, extensions, desktop tools, LayOut documentation, and higher-tier BIM workflows. |

| Major remodeling projects | Home Designer / Chief Architect | More substantial architectural and remodeling capabilities, but unnecessary for simple furniture layouts. |
These recommendations combine the 2025 TechRadar roundup with the products’ published capabilities and pricing information. TechRadar named Floorplanner its overall choice, DreamPlan its budget pick, and Chief Architect Home Designer Suite its professional alternative, but it did not publish a uniform scorecard, standardized render-time measurements, or a complete export comparison. The recommendations below therefore distinguish use cases rather than presenting one ranking as an objective industry verdict. See TechRadar’s September 9, 2025 roundup for its original tested-list framing.
What counts as interior design software?
The category covers several different types of products:
#1 Best Overall
- Battery-free Stylus - Only COMPATIBLE to Huion Inspiroy H640P/H950P/H1060P/H610Pro V2/HS610/HS64/H420X/H580X/H610X; Never worry about pen-charging, and eco-friendly of use; Without operating battery, the pen is only 16g in weight, and its front end is made of wearable silicone for soothing feel.
- NOT COMPATIBLE with iPad, other Graphics Tablet or Huion Graphics Monitor GT Series; Huion provides one year warranty.
- Two Customizable Pen Buttons - Set the function to your reference like eraser, fasten your working efficiency; Palm rejection design of dual keys on both sides of the pen helps reduce touch frequency and realize most effective creation.
- Long-lasting Lifespan - First of Huion's products features battery-free stylus, say goodbye to charging cables; Don't need to worry about the potential battery leakage and run-out.
- 8192 Levels of Pen Pressure Sensitivity - Enjoy the accuracy and precision when drawing; Having 233 PPS report rate, 5080LPI resolution, you can paint or draw or sketch smoothly on your Huion Inspiroy series Tablets.
- Floor-plan-first tools draw walls, doors, windows, fixtures, and furniture in measured 2D layouts, then show them in 3D.
- Decorating and visualization tools focus on colors, materials, furniture, lighting, renders, panoramas, and mood-setting images.
- 3D modeling platforms let users build custom geometry, but usually require more training than drag-and-drop room planners.
- Mobile measurement tools capture an existing space with a phone or tablet. Their scans still need manual checking.
- Architectural and construction systems add elevations, schedules, site information, documentation, estimates, CAD/BIM workflows, and more detailed building tools.
A photorealistic image is not the same thing as a construction drawing. Before choosing software, decide whether you need inspiration, a furniture layout, a measured plan, a remodel concept, or documents another professional can use.
How to choose the right tool
For a casual room makeover
Start with Floorplanner or Homestyler. Both reduce setup time and make it easy to try furniture, colors, and finishes. Homestyler is the better fit when the final deliverable is a render, panorama, video, or virtual-tour experience. Floorplanner is the simpler choice when the main task is arranging a room or testing alternatives in a browser.
For a DIY remodel
Prioritize dimensions, wall thicknesses, doors, windows, fixtures, and editable alternatives over visual polish. RoomSketcher is a strong fit for measured plans and presentation. Sweet Home 3D is worth considering when cost and offline access matter. For substantial structural work, move up to Home Designer or Chief Architect rather than assuming a consumer planner can produce permit-ready documentation.
For a small design studio
Look for scale printing, branded outputs, customer profiles, collaboration, reusable assets, predictable rendering costs, and editable project ownership. RoomSketcher’s Pro and Team plans specifically advertise branding, client management, collaboration, and presentation outputs. SketchUp becomes more attractive when custom modeling, extensions, documentation, or interoperability matter more than instant room decoration.
For a mobile-first workflow
MagicPlan and RoomSketcher’s capture workflows are designed around quick room measurement or floor-plan creation. RoomSketcher advertises AI-powered floor-plan capture, LiDAR-based capture on supported iPhone and iPad devices, AI renders, 360 views, and Live 3D. Those are vendor-stated capabilities, not proof of construction accuracy. Recheck every scan with manual measurements.
Product-by-product recommendations
1. Floorplanner: best overall for most DIY users
Best for: quick room layouts, furniture planning, and browser-first home design.
Floorplanner is the most approachable all-rounder in the 2025 TechRadar roundup. Its main advantage is low friction: open a browser, draw a room, add furniture, and move between 2D and 3D views without committing to a professional desktop workflow.
The free entry tier is useful for experimenting, but it is not an unrestricted export plan. The official pricing page describes basic projects with 960×540-pixel SD exports and a Floorplanner watermark. Credits can upgrade projects to HD, 4K, or 8K and can enable additional floors and variants. The page showed credit bundles of five for $8.15, 10 for $16.30, 30 for $48.90, and 100 for $163, excluding VAT; prices and plan terms can change.
TechRadar reported Plus at $5 per month and Pro at $29 per month in its September 2025 review. Recheck the official pricing page before buying because subscriptions, credits, VAT, waiting periods, and export restrictions affect the real cost.
Rank #2
- New upgraded version: Battery-free Stylus with 8192 Levels Pressure does not require charging, The report rate of the H420X graphic tablet has increased to 300 PPS, making lines quicker and smoother, and feel like a real pen. The pen also has 2 customizable buttons on the side that allow you to switch between right-clicking and the eraser etc instantly
- Graphic design tablet H420X is only 7mm in thickness and 167g in weight. A slim and compact design with a active area of 4.17x2.6 inches and dimension of 6.77x4.3 inches make it perfect for limited desktop space and easy to carry out when on a trip.
- H420X huion drawing tablet is compatible with Windows 7 or later, Mac OS 10.12 or later, and Android 6.0 or later. Huion H420X drawing pad has good compatibility with most drawing software including Adobe Photoshop, Paint tool sai, Corel Painter, Illustrator, Sketchbook, Manga Studio, Clip Studio Paint, Fireworks, Comic Studio, SAI, Krista, Infinite Stratos, Pixologic ZBrush and other major graphics applications, and more. H420X is NOT compatible with iOS.
- H420X computer graphics tablets also can be used for playing OSU games, signing documents, taking notes, and more. No need to install the driver. Just plug and play!
- The note taking tablet is also easier to handwrite write, edit, and annotate with a stylus for online education, e-learning, remote working, or web conference. HUION H420X also is compatible with XSplit, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and more
Main limitation: it is better for interiors than outdoor design, and credit-based upgrades can make repeated high-resolution exports less predictable. Choose it if you want the fastest route from an empty room to several presentable layouts—not if you need construction documentation.
2. RoomSketcher: best for measured plans and client presentation
Best for: homeowners, remodelers, real-estate professionals, and small studios that need polished 2D and 3D deliverables.
RoomSketcher is the more presentation-oriented alternative to Floorplanner. Its published Pro features include 2D and 3D floor plans, 3D photos, 360 views, Live 3D, material replacement, scale printing, measurements, branding, and customized floor plans. Team adds five users, customer profiles, training, a customer manager, and project collaboration.
The free/pay-as-you-go tier costs $0 and includes one user, a limited furniture library, 3D snapshots, and access to ordered floor plans. The official pricing page listed Pro at $12 per month when billed annually ($144 per year), or $24 monthly. Team was listed at $35 per month when billed annually ($420 per year), or $70 monthly. Annual plans include monthly credits, while additional outputs and floor-plan services consume credits. The page listed AI Convert and FloorCapture at $20 per floor on pay-as-you-go and ordered floor plans at $38 per floor; prices exclude tax and can change.
Main limitation: the strongest outputs are tied to paid plans, credits, or ordering services. It is a better choice than Floorplanner when presentation and measured-looking plans matter, but less compelling for a one-off mood board.

3. SketchUp: best for professional 3D modeling and flexibility
Best for: users who need custom geometry, extensions, detailed modeling, or professional documentation.
SketchUp should not be treated as a beginner room planner. It is a flexible 3D modeling platform: excellent when a standard furniture library cannot represent the room, built-ins, millwork, unusual ceiling, or custom joinery you need.
Trimble’s published annual-billing monthly-equivalent prices were $10.75 per user per month for Go, $33.25 for Pro, and $68.25 for Studio. Go includes web and iPad modeling, cloud storage, and materials and furnishings. Pro adds the desktop 3D modeler, LayOut 2D documentation, PreDesign, extensions, and enhanced IFC/DWG compatibility. Studio adds advanced visualization and BIM workflows, Revit import, point-cloud modeling, photorealistic visuals, animations, and 360-degree panoramas. Some advanced modelers are Windows-only. Check the official plan page for current terms.
SketchUp promotes more than four million assets in 3D Warehouse, a vendor claim that does not guarantee accurate dimensions, current products, licensing suitability, or consistent quality.

- Work for both hands - Huion Artist Glove with two fingers; The package includes one unit of glove which can be used on both hand, free size; 20cm in length, 8cm in width.
- Anti-fouling design - It can prevent smudges from your hand on a Graphic Tablet, Graphics Monitor or some other items, leaving no more scratch. Note: The glove cannot prevent accidental touching from the touch screen, it just can reduce the friction between your hand and the tablet surface.
- Comfortable Material - Made from Soft Lycra and Nylon, extremely flexible, comfortable to work with; It can reduce friction between your hand and the surface.
- Classic color - The glove is black, peaceful and charming color; And the most important point is that this color is soiling resistant so you do not need to wash it frequently.
- Flexible using - Works perfectly for sketching, inking, coloring and digital drawing on graphics tablets.
Main limitation: the learning curve is materially steeper than a drag-and-drop planner, and useful professional documentation begins at paid tiers. Choose SketchUp for modeling control, not instant simplicity.
4. Homestyler: best for decorative renders
Best for: visualizing décor, finishes, furniture schemes, and presentation-ready scenes.
Homestyler is particularly attractive when the image is the product. Its official pricing page describes a free Basic plan with unlimited projects and unlimited 1K renders. Higher-resolution output and advanced features may require paid plans or coins. The platform advertises panoramas, video rendering, 720-degree virtual tours, VR viewing, and custom interior modeling.
Do not confuse rendering ability with measured-plan accuracy. A beautiful scene can still contain an incorrectly sized sofa, impossible clearance, or inaccurate wall opening. Also check the plan and resolution before estimating cost: quotas and coin charges vary by plan. TechRadar reported individual paid plans starting at $5 per month and business pricing reaching $19.60 per user per month in its 2025 review, but confirm current figures on the official pricing page.

5. Sweet Home 3D: best free/offline alternative
Best for: budget users who want local software, broad platform access, and basic 2D-to-3D planning.
Sweet Home 3D is a genuinely important alternative to subscription-first planners. Its official site describes a free application for drawing a home plan, arranging furniture, and viewing the result in 3D. It offers downloadable versions for Windows, macOS, and Linux, mobile versions for iOS and Android, and an online WebGL browser version. The site displayed version 7.5, updated May 5, 2025.
The full version advertises more than 10,000 models and 400 included textures, alongside 3D photo and video rendering. Treat those counts as vendor claims rather than an independent measure of asset quality.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Main limitation: it may feel less polished than newer cloud-first competitors and is not the obvious choice for branded client management, collaborative editing, or high-end commercial presentation. It is nevertheless the safest starting point when “free” and “offline” are requirements.

6. Planner 5D: best for broad cross-platform access
Best for: users who want a consumer-friendly workflow across web, desktop, mobile, and visionOS.
Planner 5D lists web, iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, and visionOS access, and its pricing page describes project sharing and shared editing, including on the Free plan. It is a reasonable candidate for users who want an accessible all-in-one workflow with AI-assisted features.
Do not assume feature parity across platforms. Confirm whether the specific export, catalog, AI, or collaboration feature you need is available on your device and plan. Pricing can also vary by region, trial, billing cycle, and offer, so check the official pricing page at checkout.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Main limitation: broad availability does not automatically mean the most precise plans or the clearest pricing. Treat it as a flexible consumer option rather than a substitute for architectural documentation.
7. MagicPlan: best for quick mobile capture
Best for: rapidly capturing an existing room or producing a starting floor plan from a phone or tablet.
MagicPlan belongs in a different category from Floorplanner and SketchUp: it is primarily useful when the starting point is an existing space that needs to be captured quickly. It can reduce manual drawing for early planning, but a phone-based scan is not a measured survey. Furniture, reflective surfaces, poor lighting, occlusion, irregular walls, and device limitations can affect results.
Main limitation: use the capture as a draft, then verify dimensions manually before ordering products, moving plumbing, designing cabinetry, or making construction decisions.
8. Home Designer and Chief Architect: best for substantial remodeling
Best for: serious home renovation, architectural modeling, and users who need more than decoration.
Home Designer and Chief Architect are excessive for rearranging a sofa, but they become relevant when a project involves multiple rooms, building elements, site information, elevations, construction details, or more structured remodeling workflows.

There is an important naming change. Home Designer Suite, Architectural, and Professional were the vendor’s 2025 DIY products; beginning with the 2026 version, the vendor consolidated those products into a single product called Home Designer. A 2025 comparison should therefore use the 2025 names only in historical context and should not imply that all remain current product names. See the vendor’s product information.
Main limitation: the software requires more time, training, and budget than a casual planner. For structural, electrical, plumbing, or permit work, professional review remains necessary.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBrowser, desktop, and mobile: which format is better?
- Browser tools: easiest to start, share, and use across devices, but often dependent on an account and internet connection. Exports, storage, and rendering may be restricted by plan.
- Desktop software: usually offers deeper modeling, offline work, and greater control, but comes with a steeper learning curve and more complicated installation or licensing.
- Mobile apps: convenient for capture and quick layouts, but less suitable for precise construction documentation. iOS and Android versions may not match web or desktop features.
Sweet Home 3D demonstrates the broadest platform range in this group, with downloadable Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android versions plus a WebGL edition. Planner 5D also lists web, iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, and visionOS. Confirm feature parity before committing to a workflow.
Free versus paid: the costs that matter
A “free” plan can mean several different things. Check each of these separately:
- Can you create unlimited projects, or only one?
- Can you export, or only view and share a project?
- Are exports watermarked or limited to low resolution?
- Are high-resolution images charged per render?
- Do AI actions consume credits?
- Does a subscription include a monthly credit allowance?
- Do credits expire or renew?
- Is the displayed price monthly, annual-billing monthly-equivalent, promotional, or introductory?
- Are tax and VAT excluded?
- Can you still edit and export the project after cancellation?
Floorplanner, RoomSketcher, and Homestyler all illustrate why a headline subscription price is not the whole cost. A low monthly fee may still be followed by charges for HD output, floor-plan conversion, AI processing, additional views, or professional services.
A repeatable way to compare tools
For a fair comparison, use the same sample project in every product:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Create a rectangular room with known dimensions.
- Add a door, two windows, and one structural obstruction.
- Furnish it with a sofa, table, rug, storage, and lighting.
- Make a second layout without redrawing the room.
- Apply flooring, wall color, cabinetry, and décor.
- Create both a 2D plan and a 3D view.
- Export or share the result.
- Reopen the project on another device or browser.
- Use the free tier before upgrading.
- Record watermarks, resolution limits, render queues, credits, subscription prompts, and recovery options.
Record the date, country, currency, operating system, browser, app version, project dimensions, and exact plan. Do not compare a paid desktop feature in one product with a free mobile feature in another as though they were equivalent.
Accuracy, AI, and construction safety
Interior design software can help communicate an idea, but it does not automatically produce a measured survey, building-code review, structural design, electrical or plumbing plan, permit drawing, contractor estimate, or installation specification.
AI can accelerate floor-plan recognition, room capture, furniture suggestions, and render generation. It can also change geometry, proportions, materials, or the location of doors and windows. Before relying on AI output, ask:
- Is the result editable or merely an image?
- Are dimensions preserved?
- Can it be exported in a useful format?
- Is the feature included in the free plan?
- How many credits does each action use?
- Has the result been checked against manual measurements?
Room scans should be checked with a tape measure or other appropriate survey method. A render is evidence of a design idea, not evidence that the room can be built as shown.

Start with Floorplanner if you want the quickest general-purpose room planner and can accept watermarks and paid export credits. Choose RoomSketcher for measured-looking plans and client-facing output, SketchUp for custom 3D modeling and professional flexibility, Sweet Home 3D for free/offline planning, and Homestyler for decorative renders and virtual presentations. For a serious whole-home remodel, consider Home Designer or Chief Architect—but treat every software plan as a design aid, not a replacement for measured verification, code review, engineering, or professional construction documents.
