A covered ice cube tray can make stacking easier, but spill resistance and odor protection depend on the lid design. A loose cover is not the same as a fitted seal, and no cover alone guarantees clean or odor-free ice. The OXO Good Grips No-Spill tray and IKEA SPJUTROCKA are two distinct covered options; the available product information supports comparing their stated features, not naming a tested winner.
What a cover can—and cannot—do
A cover can keep the tray’s contents enclosed and provide a flatter surface for stacking, but performance depends on how it attaches. A lid that simply rests on top may be useful for covering a tray in the freezer; it should not be assumed to prevent spills when carried. Look for an explicitly described seal if you need to move a filled tray.
OXO says the silicone seal on its No-Spill tray locks water in for carrying and locks air out to prevent freezer odor. Those are manufacturer claims, not independently measured results. A covered tray also does not replace clean handling or food-safe storage.

Check each current product page for availability, price, dimensions, and updated material or care details before purchasing. Fit matters: measure freezer clearance if you plan to stack trays or place them on a narrow shelf.

How to choose for your freezer and routine
- If you carry filled trays: prioritize a design whose manufacturer explicitly describes a seal that retains water. A lid alone is not proof of spill resistance.
- If you mainly want covered stacking: confirm that the lid sits securely and that the tray’s height fits your freezer when stacked.
- If cleaning is a priority: follow the exact model’s care instructions. OXO specifies top-rack dishwasher cleaning and a removable silicone lid; do not apply that guidance to other trays.
- If material matters: compare the materials listed for the specific model. IKEA identifies polyethylene and polypropylene for SPJUTROCKA; OXO identifies a silicone seal.
Keep ice clean after it freezes
The FDA advises consumers: “Handle ice with clean, non-breakable utensils, such as tongs or an ice scoop.” It also advises storing ice in clean containers safe for food storage. This is general ice-handling advice, not a certification of either tray. See the FDA’s consumer guidance on ice.
What the product information establishes
The manufacturer pages describe features, but they do not provide an independent comparative test of spill resistance, odor transfer, cube release, or ice cleanliness. Choose according to the feature you need and treat performance language as a product claim unless independently tested.
