There is no single maker recommendation that applies to every piano. Steinway & Sons recommends 40%โ60% relative humidity and 68โ78ยฐF; Yamaha recommends 35%โ55% RH, with 45% optimal. Use the guidance for your instrumentโs manufacturer when available rather than treating either range as a universal standard.
These are manufacturer recommendations, not guarantees of a particular tuning result or measured performance outcome. Humidity advice also does not replace routine piano maintenance.
Measure the room before choosing a humidifier
Place a digital hygrometer or thermometer-hygrometer near the piano so you can see the conditions the instrument is exposed to. Yamaha suggests a digital thermometer that includes a humidity reading; Steinway recommends monitoring relative humidity with a hygrometer. Keep the sensor away from direct humidifier output, heating or cooling vents, and sunlight so its reading better reflects the surrounding room.

Check readings over time, particularly during dry heating periods. A humidifier is useful only if the room is consistently below the target you are following. If readings are already within that range, adding moisture may push the room beyond it.
How to compare room humidifiers for a piano room
Choose based on the room and the control you need, not on a piano-specific label. - Coverage: Match the stated room coverage to the piano roomโs size. Coverage claims are not a guarantee of uniform humidity throughout a room.
- Humidity controls: Look for controls that let you respond to hygrometer readings, and understand whether the unit measures and regulates humidity or simply runs at a selected output.
- Water capacity and refilling: Consider how often the reservoir will need attention in your expected operating conditions.
- Cleaning and consumables: Check cleaning instructions, replacement-filter requirements, and ongoing maintenance before buying.

Where to place a humidifierโand why gradual climate changes matter
Use a room humidifier to change the surrounding roomโs humidity, not to blow moisture toward the instrument. Keep it at a distance from the piano and avoid placing the piano in the path of its output. Yamaha notes that wood, felt, cloth, and leather piano components are sensitive to humidity. It also warns that abruptly warming a cold room can cause condensation on strings and metal parts. These approaches serve different purposes. A room humidifier changes conditions in the room; an installed system is fitted to the piano and requires an instrument-specific suitability decision. Steinway UK recommends room humidification or dehumidification rather than localizing artificial humidity control within the piano. A practical decision sequence
- Identify your pianoโs manufacturer and check its humidity recommendations.
- Place a digital hygrometer near the piano, out of direct airflow, sunlight, and humidifier output.
