Then check whether the exact apparatus is currently FIG-certified if it will be used at a FIG-sanctioned event, and plan supplementary mats around the setup where applicable. No available evidence establishes a universally safest flooring material or proves that one system reduces injuries more than another.
What counts as gymnastics flooring?
“Gymnastics flooring” can refer to the floor apparatus itself or to extra mats used around it. These are different equipment categories, and a supplementary mat does not replace a sprung floor system for formal floor exercise.
- Sprung free exercise floor: the apparatus used for floor exercise. Select it for the discipline, venue, and applicable competition requirements.
- Panel mat: additional matting that may be placed around the outside corners of a floor exercise mat in specified setups.
- Landing mat: a mat intended for landing or safety use around particular apparatus. Its dimensions and requirements depend on the apparatus and governing rules.
- Home or recreational practice surface: suitability depends on the activity, skill, athlete, room, and supervision. The sources available here do not establish a universally safe consumer surface or justify prescribing carpet, household foam, or rubber tiles for gymnastics skills.
How to compare the options
| Option | Best suited to | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| FIG-certified free exercise floor system | FIG-sanctioned competition or facilities specifying certified apparatus | Exact product and certificate status, discipline, dimensions, manufacturer, and certificate expiry. Not every product marketed as a sprung floor is necessarily currently certified. |
| Supplementary panel mat | Extra matting around a floor exercise setup where the program or facility calls for it | Placement, surrounding surface, size, and intended use. It is not a replacement for the floor apparatus or a proven injury-prevention guarantee. |
| Landing mat | Landing or safety use around particular apparatus | Applicable apparatus norms, intended position, dimensions, and thickness. Requirements vary; do not assume one size or thickness applies everywhere. |
| Home or recreational surface | Activity-specific practice, assessed for the athlete and setting | Seek qualified, activity-specific guidance. The sources cited here do not establish a universally safe flooring recommendation for home gymnastics. |
What certification and dimensions mean
The FIG Apparatus Norms document retrieved for this article is the 2023 edition. It lists a free exercise floor and supplementary mats in competition equipment tables, including a 200 × 200 × 10 cm supplementary mat for certain floor exercise configurations. That figure applies to those configurations; it is not a universal mat recommendation. The norms state that apparatus at FIG-sanctioned events must have a valid FIG certificate and that the FIG must be informed of the official manufacturer and exact product. Check the FIG Apparatus Norms and the official certified-apparatus listing before procurement, and confirm the current edition and certificate status.
Dimensions also depend on discipline. World Gymnastics’ aerobic competition rules specify a 12 m × 12 m competition floor, with marked competition areas of 10 m × 10 m for some categories and 7 m × 7 m for others. These are aerobic competition dimensions, not a general specification for artistic gymnastics, home practice, or every competition format. See the World Gymnastics aerobic competition floor rules.

When supplementary mats are relevant
USA Gymnastics’ 2020 revision of its Xcel floor exercise apparatus specifications recommends panel matting around the outside corners of the floor exercise mat in specified settings, especially when the surrounding surface is cement or wood. This is a reason to consider the setup and nearby hard surfaces; it does not show that a particular mat, thickness, or floor system prevents injury. Coaches and facility operators should verify the current rules for their program and competition in the USA Gymnastics apparatus specifications.
For facility planning, the Government of Western Australia gymnastics guide summarizes apparatus surfaces and safety zones and points to FIG norms for technical specifications. For sanctioned events, the governing body’s current rules should take precedence.

A practical procurement checklist
- Identify the use: specify the discipline, venue, and whether the floor is for sanctioned competition, training, or recreational activity.
- Confirm the governing requirements: use the current rules for that program and event; do not apply dimensions from another discipline.
- Verify the exact apparatus: for FIG-sanctioned events, check the specific product and its current certificate in the official listing rather than relying on a general “competition” or “sprung” description.
- Plan the surrounding setup: assess the surface around the floor and determine whether supplementary panel mats or other mats are called for by the applicable guidance.
- Compare like with like: review discipline, dimensions, intended use, certification, and supplementary mat provisions. Product catalogs such as SPIETH’s discipline categories and its landing-mat range can help identify equipment categories, but supplier descriptions are not independent comparative performance tests.
What the evidence does not establish
The sources cited here provide rules, apparatus guidance, a government planning reference, and manufacturer catalog information. They do not provide standardized independent tests ranking floor systems for rebound or impact absorption, comparative injury-reduction results, installer or facility cost comparisons, or individualized advice for home practice. Avoid choosing a floor on claims of “bounce,” impact protection, or injury prevention unless comparable evidence for the specific products and use is available.
