Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor interior wood trim, paneling, furniture, crafts, and small household projects, Rust-Oleum’s Zinsser Bulls Eye Shellac is a traditional finish and sealer available in clear or amber brush-on formats and clear spray. If you plan to put polyurethane over the sealer, choose the manufacturer’s dewaxed Bulls Eye SealCoat instead: Rust-Oleum says standard Bulls Eye Shellac is not recommended under polyurethane.
Which household shellac should you choose?
The right choice depends mainly on the job and what you plan to apply over the shellac. Bulls Eye Shellac is intended for interior wood finishing and sealing. SealCoat is the manufacturer’s specified option when you want a shellac-based sealer beneath a clear topcoat such as oil-based polyurethane.

| Zinsser Bulls Eye Shellac | Interior trim, paneling, furniture, crafts, and household projects | Brush-on in clear or amber; clear spray for crafts and small projects. The technical sheet lists a 12-ounce clear spray can and brush-on containers from half-pint through five gallons. | Not recommended by Rust-Oleum as a sealer under polyurethane. |
| Zinsser Bulls Eye SealCoat | Sealing wood when a compatible clear topcoat is planned | 100% dewaxed shellac-based sealer; the cited technical sheet does not state package sizes. | Rust-Oleum says its lack of wax makes it compatible with clear finish topcoats, including oil-based polyurethane. |
Packaging and availability can vary by location; check the current container label and local stock. Bulls Eye Shellac is described by Rust-Oleum as producing a natural-looking mid-gloss finish that will not yellow or darken with age. Those are the manufacturer’s product claims, not a comparative performance ranking.
When the surface is going to be painted
Although the technical sheet says Bulls Eye Shellac can block odors and seal knots, Rust-Oleum directs users to B-I-N Primer-Sealer when the surface is to be painted. Use a purpose-built primer where the manufacturer specifies one rather than assuming any shellac finish is interchangeable with primer.

How to prepare and apply Bulls Eye Shellac
- Check the surface and remove contaminants. Work on a clean, dry, sound surface. Remove dust, dirt, grease, oil, wax, mildew, adhesive, and other contaminants. The product page specifies removing wax with mineral spirits; follow the label directions for the surface and cleaner.
- Remove unsound coatings. The technical sheet advises removing coatings that are loose or otherwise unsound. For bare wood that has been exposed for more than four weeks, it specifies light sanding with 80–100 grit paper to remove weathered fibers. Do not treat that instruction as a universal sanding sequence for every project.
- Stir the product thoroughly. The technical sheet says not to thin it.
- Apply several light coats. Use a brush, pad, or lint-free wiping cloth, following the directions for the chosen format.
- Allow drying time before sanding and recoating. The sheet calls for at least one hour before sanding with 220-grit or finer paper and recoating. It also reports touch-dry time of 30 minutes and recoat time of less than one hour, based on 70°F and 50% relative humidity. Those are manufacturer specifications under the stated conditions; cooler conditions require more time, and actual home conditions may differ.
How much shellac will a quart cover?
Rust-Oleum’s BEY-06 technical data sheet (revision 040622) gives practical coverage for brush-on Bulls Eye Shellac as 100–150 square feet per quart. The range depends on application method and surface porosity, so treat it as a planning estimate rather than a guaranteed yield. Rough or absorbent surfaces and application differences can change how much product a project uses.

- Interior use: The cited Bulls Eye Shellac documentation describes interior applications; it does not establish it as an exterior finish.
- Older paint: Scraping or sanding old paint can release toxic lead dust. The technical sheet recommends a NIOSH-approved respirator and careful cleanup. Consult the current product label and applicable lead-safety guidance before disturbing older coatings.
- Cleaner: The sheet says not to use TSP as a cleaner.
- Tools and spills: For wet tools, drips, and spills, the sheet names denatured alcohol or household ammonia and water. Follow the current label and local requirements.
- Leftover product: Dispose of unused material according to local rules for solvent-based coatings.
The technical data cited here is Rust-Oleum manufacturer documentation, not an independent comparison or hands-on test. Because labels, formulations, coverage, and packaging can change, use the instructions on the product you buy.
