Compare the beam layout, usable range, and accuracy at its stated distance—not the word “best” on its own. The specifications below are manufacturer claims for models sold in different markets, not results from a hands-on comparison.
Choose the beam layout that matches the work
Horizontal-only 360-degree line
A 360-degree horizontal laser projects a level reference around a room, which is useful when aligning work across multiple walls. Bosch’s UK-market PLL 360-1 is self-leveling and lists a 24 m diameter working range, ±0.4 mm/m accuracy, a ±4-degree leveling range, and a 1/4-inch tripod thread. Its specification is for the UK model; do not assume it describes a similarly named product in another market.
Cross-line laser
A cross-line laser adds a vertical reference to the horizontal line, making it more suitable when work also needs plumb alignment. Bosch’s U.S.-market GLL50-20 projects horizontal and vertical lines. Bosch lists up to 50 ft of range and accuracy of 5/16 in at 30 ft.
Three-plane laser
For layout that needs more than one vertical reference, a three-plane laser can project a horizontal plane and two vertical 360-degree planes. Bosch lists those capabilities for its U.S.-market GLL330-80CGL, along with 115 ft range without a receiver, up to 400 ft with a compatible receiver, and 1/8 in accuracy at 30 ft. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results.

Compare the specifications without mixing unlike measurements
Range figures are meaningful only when you know what they measure and what equipment is required. A diameter specification for a room-wide line is not directly equivalent to a line-of-sight range; a receiver-assisted maximum is not the same as unaided range. Accuracy also needs its distance: “5/16 in at 30 ft” and “1/8 in at 30 ft” describe different manufacturer-stated tolerances at the same distance, but they do not establish a controlled head-to-head comparison.

Specifications are from the manufacturers’ pages for the PLL 360-1, GLL50-20, and GLL330-80CGL. They cover different products and measurement descriptions, so use them to identify a fit for your job rather than rank the models as though tested under the same conditions.

Check visibility, leveling, and jobsite conditions
Beam color and lighting
Beam color alone does not tell you how easy a line will be to see in your work area. Bosch describes the GLL50-20 as a red-beam model and the GLL330-80CGL as green-beam. Treat visibility descriptions as manufacturer claims and consider the actual lighting and distance at the site; no independent visibility testing is available here.
Self-leveling and angled layout
Self-leveling is useful when setting a level or plumb reference, but the leveling range is model-specific. Bosch lists a ±4-degree leveling range for the UK PLL 360-1. For sloped layout work, check whether the exact model supports manual or angle mode and follow its manual for setup; do not assume that every self-leveling laser handles tilt the same way.

Durability and power
For the U.S. GLL50-20, Bosch lists an IP55 rating and AA or separately sold rechargeable battery options. For the U.S. GLL330-80CGL, Bosch lists IP65 for the tool only. Ratings and battery configurations belong to those specific models; check the current product details and manual for the exact regional version before exposing a tool to dust, water, or demanding site conditions.
Match the mount and accessories to the exact model
Tripod threads are not interchangeable by assumption. Bosch lists a 1/4-20 mount for the GLL50-20, 1/4-inch and 5/8-inch mount threads for the GLL330-80CGL, and a 1/4-inch tripod thread for the UK PLL 360-1. Confirm the thread and included mounting hardware for the precise model before buying a tripod or bracket.

The GLL330-80CGL’s stated 400 ft range requires a compatible receiver, sold separately according to Bosch. Receiver compatibility is model-specific; verify it with the manufacturer rather than choosing a receiver solely by brand or appearance.

- Room-wide horizontal leveling: Consider a 360-degree horizontal model, then verify its stated range, accuracy, leveling range, and mounting thread.
- Horizontal plus plumb references: A cross-line model provides a vertical line as well as a horizontal one; check that its range and accuracy suit the working distance.
- Broader layout with multiple references: A three-plane model provides additional vertical coverage. Confirm whether the range you need is available without a receiver or requires a compatible accessory.
- Work at longer distances: Compare the measurement type and receiver requirement before treating two range figures as equivalent.
- Sloped surfaces or changing site conditions: Check manual/angle operation, environmental rating, power options, and the instructions for the exact model and regional variant.
One additional model illustrates why model number and market matter: Bosch Professional’s India page lists the GLL3XG as a green-beam laser with a 20 m range, ±0.5 mm/m accuracy, and one horizontal plus two vertical lines. Those figures describe the India-market listing, not a universal GLL3XG specification.

Use and maintain a laser level safely
Follow the operating and laser-safety instructions for the exact model. Avoid looking into the beam, set up the tool as directed, and use the specified operating conditions. Handling, setup, distance, and calibration can affect accuracy; consult the manual for accuracy checks and recalibration rather than relying on an assumed tolerance indefinitely.
For the DEWALT DW0851, the manufacturer product page describes five spot beams and a rear-projecting horizontal line; its instruction manual describes a self-leveling laser for horizontal, vertical, and square alignment. These details identify its stated functions, but do not make it a direct substitute for a 360-degree horizontal-line model.
