Best HomeKit Motion Sensors in 2026: Which One Should You Buy?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most Apple Home users, the Eve Motion Matter is the best overall HomeKit motion sensor in 2026. It combines Matter-over-Thread connectivity, Apple Home support, local operation without an Eve cloud account, light sensing, and sheltered outdoor flexibility. The Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2 is the better value on published price, while the Philips Hue Motion Sensor makes the most sense if you already own Hue lights and a Hue Bridge.

Before buying, check the hub requirement. A HomeKit or Matter motion sensor is not necessarily hub-free: Apple Home automations, remote access, and notifications generally require a suitable HomePod or Apple TV setup, and Thread devices require Thread-capable infrastructure.

  • Native Apple Home accessories: Designed to be added directly to Apple Home.
  • Matter accessories: Can be added to Apple Home, but still depend on a Matter controller and, for Thread models, a Thread network.
  • Bridge-dependent accessories: Communicate with a vendor bridge, such as a Hue Bridge or Aqara hub, which then exposes them to Apple Home.

Apple says Matter accessories require a home hub such as a HomePod or Apple TV 4K. Thread accessories additionally require a Thread-enabled home hub or compatible Thread border router. Apple lists the HomePod mini, HomePod (2nd generation), Apple TV 4K (2nd generation), and Apple TV 4K (3rd-generation Wi‑Fi + Ethernet) among supported Thread-capable devices; exact support can depend on software and device configuration. See Apple’s Thread troubleshooting guidance and its Matter and Home hub requirements.

Pairing locally is not the same as having a dependable smart home. A compatible iPhone may be able to assist with local Thread pairing, but automations, remote control, and notifications need an appropriate always-on home hub or border-router arrangement. Hue and Aqara systems add their own bridge requirements and vendor apps.

Best overall: Eve Motion Matter

Eve Motion Matter is the strongest all-round recommendation for Apple Home users who want a relatively simple, privacy-focused Matter-over-Thread sensor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its verified specifications include a 120-degree field of view, a stated detection distance of up to 9 m (30 ft) when mounted at 2 m (6.5 ft), a built-in light sensor, two replaceable AAA batteries, and IPX3 water resistance. Eve describes it as suitable for indoor and outdoor use, but IPX3 means protection from water spray—not full weatherproofing. Use it in a sheltered location rather than on an exposed wall or where it will receive driving rain.

Eve says the sensor communicates locally and does not require an Eve cloud account, registration, or tracking. That is a claim about Eve’s own service and should not be generalized to every Apple Home, Matter, or third-party integration. Eve also says its motion and light sensors can be used in Apple Home automations.

Why choose it?

  • Good balance of Apple Home compatibility, Thread, privacy, and placement flexibility.
  • No proprietary Eve hub is identified as necessary.
  • Light sensing can prevent lights from turning on unnecessarily during daylight.
  • Replaceable batteries are easy to source.

Who should skip it?

Skip it if you do not have—and do not want to buy—a compatible Matter/Thread Apple Home setup. It is also the wrong category if you need reliable detection of somebody sitting still, or genuinely weather-exposed outdoor monitoring. The 9 m figure is a manufacturer specification, not an independently measured real-world result, and battery life should not be treated as a fixed guarantee.

Best value: Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2

The Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2 is the best value among the currently verified Matter-over-Thread options. Aqara’s U.S. page listed it at $33.99 during research, substantially below Eve’s observed $49.95 price.

The P2 has a 170-degree stated detection angle, up to 7 m (23 ft) of stated range, an independent light sensor, and two CR2450 batteries. Aqara advertises battery life of up to two years. That is an expected maximum or manufacturer estimate, not a guaranteed ownership period: motion frequency, temperature, sensitivity, cooldown settings, radio conditions, firmware, and network quality all affect battery use.

It supports Matter over Thread and is listed for Apple Home, Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings. Aqara says additional capabilities—including adjustable timeout and sensitivity and a local alert system—become available through the Aqara Hub M3 and Aqara Home app. Keep the distinction clear: the sensor’s Apple Home functions are not automatically identical to its Aqara Home functions.

Why choose it?

  • Lowest published sensor price among the main Matter-over-Thread choices in this comparison.
  • Wider stated field of view than Eve Motion.
  • Motion and light sensing in one device.
  • Matter support offers more platform flexibility than a Zigbee-only Aqara sensor.

What to check first

Aqara’s product description discusses connectivity through an Aqara Thread border router, so confirm the exact Apple Home pairing path for your region and equipment before ordering. Buyers who want advanced timeout, sensitivity, or Aqara-specific alert features may also need the Hub M3 and Aqara Home app. The official page establishes motion and light sensing; it does not establish full mmWave-style detection of a person who remains still.

Best for Philips Hue households: Hue Motion Sensor

If your home already has Hue bulbs and a Hue Bridge, the Philips Hue Motion Sensor is the most logical choice. It is built around the Hue lighting ecosystem, and Hue lists Apple Home compatibility alongside Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, IFTTT, Sonos, and other integrations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The sensor uses Zigbee and Bluetooth, is battery-powered with two included AAA batteries, and has an IP42 rating. Philips lists a stated minimum battery life of two years and says a Hue Bridge can support up to 12 accessories for the sensor. IP42 is an indoor rating, so it should not be used in exposed outdoor locations.

Eve Motion (Matter) 3-Pack – Smart Motion and Light Sensor, IPX3, Automatic Activation of Devices, Future-Proof, Works with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, Requires Thread Border Router
  • 120° field of view and up to 9 m detection range. Indoors and outdoors thanks to IPX3 water resistance and wireless battery operation.
  • Control your lights and appliances with movement, and receive notifications when motion is detected (available on selected platforms). Refine automations by brightness in the Eve app for iOS.
  • Matter-enabled to let you seamlessly monitor your home across smartphones and voice assistants of all major platforms. Cutting-edge Thread network technology for a robust smart home.
  • 100% Privacy: No Eve cloud, no registration, no tracking. Local communication without cloud dependency.
  • Eve Motion requires iOS/iPadOS 16.4 (or later) or Android 8.1 (or later) plus a hub of your chosen platform: Apple Home: Apple TV 4K (2nd gen / 3rd gen 128 GB), HomePod (2nd gen), HomePod mini / Samsung SmartThings: SmartThings Hub v3, SmartThings Station / Amazon Alexa: Echo (4th gen), Echo Hub, Echo Plus (2nd gen), Echo Show 8 (3rd gen), Echo Show 10 (3rd gen), Echo Studio, eero 6 / 6+ / Pro 6 / Pro 6E / Max 7 / Google Home: Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi, Nest Wifi Pro

The total-cost catch

The sensor’s observed price was $48.99, but a Hue Bridge is required. Philips’ page displayed Bridge Pro pricing of $139.99 during research. For an existing Hue owner, that additional cost may be irrelevant; for someone buying one sensor from scratch, the system cost is much higher than the sensor price suggests.

Do not describe the Hue sensor itself as a native Matter-over-Thread device. Philips’ page includes Matter in its broader compatibility information, but the sensor’s documented architecture remains Zigbee/Bluetooth with Hue Bridge mediation.

Best for existing Aqara systems: Aqara Motion Sensor P1

The Aqara Motion Sensor P1 is worth considering when you already own a compatible Aqara Zigbee hub. Aqara positions it around local monitoring, alarms, notifications, and an advertised five-year battery-life figure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is not the default recommendation for a new Apple Home installation. Treat it as hub-dependent unless the current packaging and official documentation explicitly say otherwise. It is also not a clean Matter-over-Thread alternative to the P2.

Before buying it for lux-based lighting automations, verify exactly which light-sensor data Apple Home exposes. The P1 page includes user feedback suggesting that some light-sensor functionality may not appear in Apple Home in the same way as motion detection. The five-year battery claim should likewise be compared cautiously with the P2’s two-year claim because the products use different radios, settings, and ecosystems.

Motion sensors are not presence sensors

All four products above are best understood as motion sensors, not general-purpose still-person presence sensors.

Its minimalist design blends seamlessly into any modern interior, delivering powerful functionality without visual clutter.

Conventional motion sensors usually rely on passive infrared (PIR) detection. They detect movement caused by changes in infrared radiation, such as a person walking through a hallway. If someone sits still, the sensor may eventually stop reporting motion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A presence sensor—often based on radar or mmWave technology—is intended to detect an occupant who remains relatively still. That is the difference between these automation goals:

  • Motion: Turn on the hallway light when somebody walks in.
  • Presence: Keep the bathroom light on while somebody remains seated.
  • Occupancy: Determine whether a room is being used, potentially over a longer period.

If you need room-level occupancy, still-person detection, or security-grade monitoring, do not make an ordinary PIR motion sensor your main purchase. The Aqara P2’s official page describes motion and light sensing, not a general-purpose mmWave presence system.

What to compare before purchasing

  1. Apple Home exposure: Check whether motion, light level, battery status, and other characteristics appear in Apple Home—not merely in the vendor’s app.
  2. Hub architecture: Identify whether you need a Thread border router, Matter controller, Hue Bridge, Aqara hub, or more than one of these.
  3. Connection type: Thread, Zigbee, Bluetooth, and Wi‑Fi have different setup and network requirements.
  4. Coverage: Compare the stated field of view and range, then account for walls, furniture, mounting height, and the direction people actually travel.
  5. Light sensing: A lux or light-level reading can make “turn lights on only when it is dark” rules more efficient, but confirm that Apple Home can use the value.
  6. Battery design: Check battery type, replaceability, and whether the published life is a minimum, maximum, or general estimate.
  7. Placement rating: IPX3 and IP42 are not interchangeable. Neither makes a product suitable for every exposed outdoor location.
  8. Automation behavior: Look for cooldown, sensitivity, timeout, and retrigger controls. Advanced controls may be limited to the vendor app.
  9. Privacy: Check account, cloud, registration, and local-operation requirements. Eve’s no-Eve-cloud claim does not automatically describe the entire Apple Home or Matter stack.
  10. Total cost: Add the price of any required bridge or hub, especially for a new Hue or Aqara installation.

How to add a motion sensor to Apple Home

  1. Install the batteries or connect power, then place the sensor within range of the relevant Thread or bridge network.
  2. Open the Home app on iPhone.
  3. Tap Home at the bottom, then Add Accessory (or use the Add button at the top).
  4. Scan the Apple Home or Matter QR code, or enter the device code.
  5. Assign the sensor to a room and give it a clear name, such as “Hallway Motion.”
  6. Create an automation using the sensor’s motion event—for example, When Motion Is Detected, turn on a selected light.
  7. Add a delay or separate “turn off” automation so the light does not remain on indefinitely.

If the Matter accessory was previously added to another app, Apple documents using More Options, selecting the accessory, and obtaining a pairing code from the vendor app. For the full Apple Home pairing flow, see Apple’s iPhone Home accessory guide.

Useful automation examples

  • Hallway: After sunset, motion turns the light on at 40%; turn it off after two minutes.
  • Bathroom: Use low brightness at night and a longer timeout so a brief pause does not leave the room dark.
  • Entryway: When motion is detected while nobody is home, send a notification—but test carefully to avoid nuisance alerts.
  • Kitchen: Use motion plus a low-light condition to trigger under-cabinet lighting only when needed.
  • Stairs: Use a short lighting period, but allow a longer cooldown if people commonly pause on the stairs.

Apple Home supports automations triggered by activity from sensors and other accessories. The precise options visible depend on the accessory, bridge, and platform integration.

Troubleshooting common problems

“Thread Border Router Required”

Check that the sensor is Thread-enabled and that your home has a compatible Thread-capable hub or border router. Apple’s documented checks include:

  • LIGHT SENSOR SWITCH WITH LONG-LASTING BATTERY LIFE: 10 year typical battery life, 3x longer than the industry average for smart home devices
  1. Turn on Bluetooth.
  2. Install any required manufacturer firmware update.
  3. Restart the active HomePod or Apple TV home hub.
  4. Try pairing from a device signed in to the Apple Account used for the Apple Home.
  5. If an Apple TV is connected by Ethernet, temporarily try Wi‑Fi on the same network as the iPhone.
  6. Check for Wi‑Fi interference and temporarily disable VPN or third-party security software while testing.
  7. Reset network settings only as a later step, since doing so affects other saved network configuration.

Apple’s full troubleshooting guidance is available at support.apple.com/en-us/102078.

“Home Hub Required” or “Software Update Required”

Update the active Apple TV or HomePod, then check Home → Home Settings → Home Hubs & Bridges. Confirm that the home owner’s Apple Account is in use and restart the active hub. Apple’s current guidance also notes that iPad is not supported as a home hub on the latest Apple Home architecture. See Apple’s home hub troubleshooting page.

The automation does not trigger

Start with these diagnostic checks rather than assuming the sensor is defective:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

  • Move the sensor closer to the hub, bridge, or Thread mesh.
  • Check whether it is aimed too high, too low, or across an obstructed path.
  • Review time-window, location, occupancy, and accessory-state conditions in the automation.
  • Check whether the sensor is still in its cooldown period.
  • Confirm that a Hue or Aqara bridge is online if the sensor depends on one.
  • Test with a simple motion-to-light automation before adding multiple conditions.

False positives

Direct sunlight, HVAC airflow, sudden temperature changes, pets, curtains, plants, reflective surfaces, and movement outside a window can all create misleading results. Outdoor placement adds changing sunlight and weather. Aim the sensor across the path of movement, avoid vents and windows where possible, and use sensitivity controls if the product and vendor app provide them.

Battery life is disappointing

Manufacturer battery estimates are affected by motion frequency, sensitivity, cooldown configuration, temperature, radio conditions, Thread mesh quality, firmware, and bridge behavior. A busy hallway in a cold location will not necessarily match a lightly used room at normal indoor temperature. Replace batteries with the specified type and investigate weak network coverage before concluding that the advertised figure is inaccurate.

Which sensor should each household buy?

  • Best overall: Eve Motion Matter for a balanced Apple Home, Thread, privacy, light-sensing, and sheltered-outdoor feature set.
  • Best value: Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2 for its lower observed price and 170-degree stated detection angle.
  • Best for Hue: Philips Hue Motion Sensor if you already own a Hue Bridge and most automations control Hue lights.
  • Best for Aqara: Aqara Motion Sensor P1 when you already have a compatible Aqara hub and value its advertised long battery life.
  • Best sheltered outdoor option: Eve Motion Matter, subject to its IPX3 splash-resistance limitation and sheltered placement.
  • Best privacy-focused option: Eve Motion Matter, based on Eve’s stated local-operation and no-Eve-cloud-account approach.
  • If you have no hub: Budget for compatible Apple Home infrastructure first. Buying a sensor alone does not guarantee pairing, automations, remote access, or notifications.
