Apple’s deadline for leaving its previous Home architecture was February 10, 2026—and it has already passed. Apple says support for the older architecture has ended. If your Home setup still depends on the legacy system, update every participating Apple device, check your account settings, and confirm that you have a supported Apple TV or HomePod home hub. An iPad can no longer serve as a home hub on the latest Apple Home architecture.
This was not simply a deadline to update the Home app from the App Store. It concerned the underlying Apple Home architecture that manages accessories, automations, remote access, and shared homes.

What Apple delayed
Apple originally planned to end support for its previous Home architecture in fall 2025. It later extended the deadline to February 10, 2026. Apple’s current guidance says support for the previous version has ended. Apple’s support documentation explains the migration and recovery process.

The architecture controls your homes, accessories, automations, hubs, remote access, and the devices belonging to people you have invited.

The Apple Home deadline timeline
- December 2022: Apple began rolling out the newer Home architecture with the software generation associated with iOS 16.2.
- Original target: Support for the older architecture was scheduled to end in fall 2025.
- November 3, 2025: Apple moved the cutoff to February 10, 2026.
- February 10, 2026: Support for the previous architecture ended.
- After the deadline: Some users saw a message that the older version was no longer supported and were required to update.
The deadline was February 10, not the end of February. Because it has passed, affected users should follow recovery steps rather than wait for another extension.
Who may be affected?
Your setup may need attention if you never accepted the newer Home architecture, use an older Apple device, rely on an iPad as your only home hub, or share your home with people using older software.
Apple says devices connected to an updated home that do not meet its software requirements can lose access until they are updated. That includes iPhones, iPads, Macs, Apple Watches, Apple TVs, and devices belonging to invited household members.

How to check and update Apple Home
- Open the Home app on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
- Open More.
- Select Home Settings.
- Choose Software Update.
- If prompted, select Update Now.
If you own multiple homes, select the relevant home first. Apple says homes owned by the same user are updated together when the migration is performed.

A completed setup should show: “This home and all accessories are up to date.” Updating the Home app through the App Store is not the same thing as completing this architecture migration.
Apple’s stated minimum software versions
Apple lists these minimum versions for devices connected to an updated home:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Device | Minimum version |
|---|---|
| iPhone | iOS 16.2 or later |
| iPad | iPadOS 16.2 or later |
| Mac | macOS 13.1 or later |
| Apple TV | tvOS 16.2 or later |
| Apple Watch | watchOS 9.2 or later |
These are Apple’s stated minimums, not a guarantee that every older device can install current software. Update each device to the latest version available for that model.
Check every person and hub—not just your iPhone
Updating the homeowner’s iPhone may not be enough. Check the devices used by everyone invited to control the home, along with every Apple TV and HomePod used as a hub.
Apple also advises confirming that the owner and invited users have:
Rank #3
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
- Two-factor authentication enabled for their Apple Account.
- iCloud Passwords and Keychain enabled.
On the latest Apple Home architecture, an iPad is not supported as a home hub. It can still be part of the Apple ecosystem, but it cannot replace a supported Apple TV or HomePod hub for the latest Home setup.

Usually, no. You probably do not need new hardware if your devices can be updated, you already have a compatible Apple TV or HomePod, and the Home app reports that the home and accessories are up to date.
A supported home hub is required for sharing control, Home notifications, remote access, automations, and adding Matter accessories. You may need one if an iPad was your only hub, or if an existing Apple TV or HomePod cannot be updated or no longer works.
To check hubs, open Home → More → Home Settings → Home Hubs & Bridges.
Setting up an Apple TV as a hub
On Apple TV, open Settings → AirPlay and Apple Home → Room, then select or add a room. Apple says the Apple TV becomes a home hub after it is added to a room in the Home app. A HomePod or HomePod mini becomes a hub automatically when set up.

What to do if the migration or access fails
- Update every participating Apple device. Include invited users’ devices and all Apple TVs and HomePods.
- Check Apple Account requirements. Confirm two-factor authentication and iCloud Passwords and Keychain for the owner and invited users.
- Check the home hub. Make sure it is powered on, connected to Wi-Fi, updated, signed in to the correct Apple Account, and assigned to a room.
- Restart the hub and network equipment. Restart the Apple TV or HomePod and, if necessary, the router.
- Return to Home Settings → Software Update. Check whether the home has completed the migration.
- Investigate individual accessories. Check accessory firmware, bridges, and network connectivity.
- Contact Apple or the accessory maker. Do this if a particular accessory remains unavailable after the Apple setup is current.
Do not immediately delete every accessory, reset bridges, or rebuild the home. Removing paired devices can make recovery harder, especially for lighting and security products connected through a bridge.
Matter and Thread requirements
Apple Home supports Matter accessories, but compatibility depends on the hub and accessory. Thread-enabled Matter devices require a Thread-capable home hub, such as a HomePod mini or certain Apple TV models. Apple specifically identifies the third-generation Apple TV 4K with Wi-Fi and Ethernet as a Thread-enabled example. See Apple’s home-hub guidance for current requirements.
An accessory can work with Apple Home without supporting every Matter or Thread feature. A third-party Thread border router may help with Thread networking, but it does not necessarily replace an Apple Home hub for sharing, remote access, notifications, or automations.
If you do need replacement hardware
- HomePod mini: A compact Apple Home hub and Thread-capable option for users who also want a Siri speaker.
- Apple TV 4K: A practical choice if you also want a streaming box; verify the model and networking configuration if Thread support matters.
- Full-size HomePod: Suited to buyers who want a premium speaker and a hub, but unnecessary if the only goal is Home connectivity.
Do not buy a new accessory or bridge merely because the architecture deadline passed. First establish whether software updates, account settings, and a supported hub solve the problem.
What the newer architecture adds
Apple associates the newer Apple Home experience with features including guest access, robot vacuum support, Activity History, and improved accessory performance. Availability can vary by accessory, software version, and region.
