For most Apple households, the best HomeKit hub in 2026 is the Apple TV 4K Wi‐Fi + Ethernet, 128GB. It is the current Apple TV configuration listed with Thread networking, includes Ethernet, and also works as a 4K streaming box. It costs $249 in the U.S. Apple Store at the time of writing.
If you only need a dedicated smart-home hub, the HomePod mini is the better value at $129. Choose the full-size HomePod for its audio quality—not because it is a better hub. And do not buy an iPad for this purpose: Apple no longer supports iPad as a home hub on the latest Apple Home.

What a HomeKit hub does
Apple now generally calls it an Apple Home hub, although “HomeKit hub” remains the term many people search for. A hub is the stationary Apple device that keeps your home available when your iPhone is not present.
Apple says a home hub enables:
- Remote control of accessories while you are away
- Automations and schedules
- Shared control for household members
- Adding and managing Matter accessories in Apple Home
- Notifications and other controller functions
An iPhone can pair with and locally control some accessories, but it is not a permanent home hub. Apple’s home hub guidance and developer documentation identify Apple TV and HomePod devices as the current first-party options.

Best overall: Apple TV 4K Wi‐Fi + Ethernet, 128GB
The $249 Apple TV 4K Wi‐Fi + Ethernet is the most versatile choice for a new Apple Home installation. It provides a stationary hub, a wired network connection, Thread networking, and 4K television streaming in one device. Apple’s current buying page identifies this as the 128GB configuration.
Ethernet can reduce the hub’s dependence on Wi‐Fi, which is useful when the Apple TV can be placed near a router or network switch. That is a network-design advantage, not a guarantee that every Home problem will disappear: Thread coverage, router configuration, multicast discovery, IPv6, software, and accessory quality still matter.
Important: not all Apple TV 4K configurations are equivalent
The $199 Apple TV 4K Wi‐Fi, 64GB model is cheaper, but Apple’s current product information specifically lists Thread networking with the $249 Wi‐Fi + Ethernet model. Do not buy the Wi‐Fi model assuming that every Apple TV 4K has identical Thread capability.
The Wi‐Fi model can still make sense if you need a hub for Wi‐Fi, Bluetooth, or non-Thread accessories, already have another Thread border router, or are prioritizing the lower price. For a new Apple Home that may use Matter-over-Thread, the Ethernet model is the safer single-device purchase.
Best value: HomePod mini
At $129, the HomePod mini is the least expensive current Apple-branded option that combines Apple Home hub functionality with Thread networking. It is the best dedicated hub for readers who do not need an Apple TV.

The mini also provides Siri voice control, a temperature and humidity sensor, and a compact form factor. It can sit in a central room or be added to another part of the home later to provide voice control and potentially improve Thread mesh coverage. See Apple’s HomePod mini specifications.
Its compromises are straightforward: it uses Wi‐Fi rather than Ethernet, has no screen or television functions, and is a modest speaker. Buy it when smart-home control is the priority; do not buy it expecting Apple TV functionality or premium audio.
Best for audio: HomePod
The $349 HomePod is the right choice when you primarily want a premium smart speaker and also want an Apple Home hub. It offers substantially stronger audio than the mini, along with Siri, room sensing, and Thread capability according to Apple’s current guidance.
It is poor value if purchased solely for automations, remote access, or Matter support. A HomePod mini costs considerably less, while two minis may be more useful for room coverage than one full-size HomePod if audio quality is not the main concern. See the current HomePod listing.
Already own an Apple device? Check before buying
If you already have a compatible Apple TV, HomePod, or HomePod mini, start there. HomePod and HomePod mini become hubs automatically during setup. An Apple TV becomes a hub after you assign it to a room in Apple Home.
For a used or older device, verify its exact model, current software support, Thread capability, network connection, and Apple Account status. “Apple TV 4K” alone is not enough information: Thread and Ethernet support depend on the configuration and generation. Apple’s compatibility guidance identifies exceptions among older Apple TV and HomePod-related configurations.

Why an iPad is no longer a HomeKit hub
Thread and Matter: what to buy for future accessories
Matter is an accessory compatibility standard. Thread is a low-power mesh networking technology used by some Matter devices and some HomeKit accessories. They are related, but they are not interchangeable.
- Matter over Wi‐Fi: uses the home network and does not require a Thread radio in the Apple hub.
- Matter over Thread: requires a Thread-enabled Apple Home hub or an appropriate Thread border router.
- HomeKit-over-Thread: also needs Thread infrastructure.
The HomePod mini and the current Apple TV 4K Wi‐Fi + Ethernet configuration are especially straightforward choices for Thread-based accessories. Thread is a mesh: mains-powered Thread devices can help forward traffic, but placement, walls, floors, interference, and accessory implementation affect results. One Thread-capable hub is not a guarantee of perfect reliability.
Matter also does not guarantee that every vendor-specific feature will appear in Apple Home. Check whether the exact accessory supports the functions you need in Apple Home, rather than assuming that its Matter badge unlocks every feature. Apple provides additional Matter guidance for Apple Home.
Using multiple hubs
Multiple HomePod and Apple TV devices can coexist in one Apple Home. This can provide more room-level Siri access, another available hub if one device goes offline, and better physical placement for a Thread network. It does not automatically fix reliability problems; the active hub, network, software versions, and accessory mesh still matter.
To review hubs or select a preferred one:
- Open the Home app.
- Tap or click More.
- Choose Home Settings.
- Select Home Hubs & Bridges.
- Review connected, unavailable, active, and preferred hubs.
How to set up your hub
HomePod or HomePod mini
- Set up the HomePod in the Home app.
- Use the same Apple Account and home as your accessories.
- Install the latest available software.
- Open Home > More > Home Settings > Home Hubs & Bridges.
- Confirm that the HomePod appears and is connected.
HomePod and HomePod mini normally become hubs automatically after setup.

Common problems and fixes
“Home Hub Required”
Restart the active hub, then try adding the accessory from an iPhone or iPad signed in to the Apple Account that created the home. Check Wi‐Fi, interference, VPNs, and third-party security software. If an Apple TV is on Ethernet, temporarily connect it to Wi‐Fi: Apple includes this step in some documented troubleshooting flows. You can also reset network settings on the affected device.
“Software Update Required”
Update the HomePod or Apple TV, the iPhone or iPad used for setup, and other Apple devices involved in the home. Then revisit Home Hubs & Bridges and verify which device is active.
A Matter accessory will not add
Confirm that a current Apple Home hub exists, pair through a compatible iPhone or iPad, and keep the accessory’s QR or setup code available. A Thread-based Matter accessory needs Thread capability or a supported border router. If it was previously commissioned elsewhere, it may need Matter multi-admin setup or a reset. Local discovery and IPv6 traffic must also be permitted by the network.
Automations run unreliably
Check active hub status, software, network stability, VPN or security software, Thread coverage, accessory battery condition, and whether the accessory exposes the required feature in Apple Home. Do not assume that changing from a HomePod mini to an Apple TV will solve every automation problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat about Aqara, Home Assistant, and other third-party hubs?
Products such as Aqara Hub M3, Home Assistant Green, Philips Hue Bridge, and IKEA hubs can be valuable for their own ecosystems. They may manage devices, provide vendor-specific automation, bridge products into Apple Home, act as Matter controllers, or provide Thread networking.
Those roles are not automatically equivalent to being an Apple Home hub. Check the exact product’s Apple Home function before treating it as a replacement for an Apple TV or HomePod. A vendor bridge may still require an Apple Home hub for Apple Home remote access and automations.
