For most new U.S. solar-plus-storage projects, Tesla Powerwall 3 is the strongest starting point. It combines 13.5 kWh of usable storage, up to 11.5 kW of continuous output in applicable configurations, and an integrated inverter. The Enphase IQ Battery 5P is usually the better fit for an existing Enphase solar system or homeowners who want smaller modular additions. The LG Home 5/Home 8 is the capacity-and-scalability choice, offering 14.4 kWh per unit and up to four units, but it requires the LG SE Box and an installer experienced with the platform.
Those recommendations are fit-based, not universal rankings. Your solar inverter, backed-up loads, utility requirements, installation location, local installer, warranty terms, and complete quote can change the result.

Capacity is not the same as power
Battery comparisons become misleading when they treat kilowatt-hours and kilowatts as interchangeable:
- Usable energy, measured in kWh, indicates how much energy the battery can provide. It affects runtime.
- Continuous power, measured in kW or kVA, indicates how many appliances can operate at the same time.
- Surge power helps start motors and compressors such as well pumps, refrigerators, air conditioners, and heat pumps.
- Backup design determines whether the system serves the entire service panel, a protected loads panel, or the whole home with automatic load shedding.
A 14.4-kWh battery with insufficient output may run lights and refrigeration for a long time but struggle to start a heat pump. A high-output battery with limited energy may start large loads successfully but run out sooner.
Tesla Powerwall 3
Why it is the default choice for many new systems
Powerwall 3 is particularly compelling when a home is receiving a new solar-and-storage design. The battery includes an integrated inverter, reducing the need for a separate battery inverter in the system architecture. Tesla lists 13.5 kWh of battery energy, configuration-specific output ratings up to 11.5 kW, and 97.5% solar-to-grid efficiency in its documentation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That combination makes one Powerwall 3 a strong candidate for homes with substantial simultaneous loads. It does not, however, guarantee that every appliance will work during an outage. Service size, panel configuration, HVAC starting current, electric heating, EV charging, and load-management controls still have to be designed correctly.
Solar and retrofit considerations
Powerwall 3 can be used with Tesla solar equipment and Tesla documents compatibility with certain third-party solar inverters. Compatibility is model-specific; an existing inverter cannot simply be assumed to work. Tesla’s compatibility table should be checked by the installer.
An existing solar retrofit may require rewiring or reconfiguration. The installer also needs to verify backup-circuit solar limits, rapid-shutdown requirements, utility interconnection rules, and the exact combination of Powerwall, Gateway, inverter, and array equipment.
Expansion
Powerwall 3 Expansion units can increase storage. One Powerwall 3 provides 13.5 kWh; a Powerwall 3 plus three expansion units represents 54 kWh, subject to Tesla’s system configuration limits and the installer’s design.
Limitations
- The headline 11.5-kW output is configuration-dependent.
- Third-party solar compatibility is conditional.
- A large battery can be more expensive or difficult to place if the electrical work, trenching, or panel upgrades are substantial.
- One large unit concentrates more equipment in one system than several smaller units.
- The applicable U.S. warranty should be read for exact capacity-retention and throughput language.
Enphase IQ Battery 5P
Why it is strongest in Enphase homes
The IQ Battery 5P is a 5.0-kWh AC-coupled battery with 3.84 kW of continuous output per unit. Enphase lists 7.68 kW of peak output for three seconds and 6.14 kW for 10 seconds. Each unit includes six embedded grid-forming microinverters.
Its principal advantage is system integration. If a home already has Enphase IQ microinverters, an Enphase combiner, and Enphase monitoring, adding an IQ Battery 5P can be cleaner than introducing a different battery architecture. Backup operation requires an IQ System Controller 3/3G, and Enphase states that installer certification is required to commission the battery.
Modularity versus cost
The 5P’s smaller capacity is useful when a homeowner wants to expand gradually or has modest critical loads. Three units provide 15 kWh of nominal usable storage, slightly more than one Powerwall 3, but they also require more units, wiring, installation space, and system equipment. They should not be treated as a direct functional equivalent without comparing output, controls, cost, and backed-up circuits.
For a home with central heat pumps, electric resistance heat, or several motor loads, one 5P is unlikely to be a whole-home solution. Multiple units may increase available power, but the installer must confirm controller, service, phase, and starting-current limits.
Warranty
Enphase publishes a 15-year limited warranty with up to 6,000 cycles for the IQ Battery 5P. Compare that headline with the actual warranty conditions, including registration, operating requirements, capacity retention, labor, shipping, and replacement terms.
LG Home 5 and Home 8
Clarifying the product name
“LG Stackable Capacity” is not one precise product name. For a current U.S. comparison, the relevant platform is the LG Home 5/Home 8 ESS. Older LG RESU products should not be casually substituted for the current Home Series.

- One Powers All. The unit of DELTA Pro Ultra whole house generator includes an inverter and a battery. One inverter supports 120V & 240V and has an exceptional 7200W output, allowing you to run almost any heavy household appliance, even a 3-ton central air conditioner. Triple the inverters for an incredible 21.6kW AC output, allowing you to live life to the fullest even during an outage. The electric generator achieves a total 7200W output even during charging.
- Strong Power Security. Scalable from one battery of 6144Wh, two days of essential power, all the way to 15, it multiplies the energy to a gigantic 90kWh. For a standard North American household, that's over 30 days of essential power secured.
- Customize Your Home Power. Use the EcoFlow app to priolritize specific circuits in your home, extending your backup even longer. For more than just blackouts, it intelligently analyses your home power usage to offset peak rates while utilizing solar to lower energy bills.
- Multi Ways to Charge. One battery of 6144Wh can be fully recharged in 2 hours. Faster than any other 6kWh solar generator. Users can choose among electric vehicle piles, solar, wall outlets or outdoor generators for charging.
- Uninterrupted Life. Online UPS with 0-ms transfer time, offering 24/7 protection for sensitive electrical devices against power disturbances or grid failure. All fans are off for the first half hour of outputting 2000W, giving you absolute silence for tranquility in everyday life.
Capacity and output
Each Home 5 or Home 8 unit provides 14.4 kWh of usable capacity. Home 5 is rated at 5.0 kVA, while Home 8 is rated at 7.5 kVA. LG lists up to 9.0 kVA for 10 seconds in backup mode for both models. Up to four units can be connected, for as much as 57.6 kWh of usable capacity.
That makes LG attractive for homeowners planning substantial storage, extended outage coverage, or future expansion. Capacity alone does not establish runtime: reserve settings, inverter losses, temperature, aging, load size, and solar availability all matter.

The Home Series is an integrated ESS platform, not a universal battery module that can attach to any inverter. It uses an LG SE Box for automatic backup transfer and system control. The installer must confirm compatible inverters, controls, communication equipment, local approvals, and the maximum permitted configuration.
“Stackable” therefore means that approved LG units can be combined within the Home Series design. It does not mean plug-and-play installation or unlimited expansion.
Efficiency and warranty
LG publishes round-trip efficiency above 90% for the Home Series. Its published qualified-product terms include a 10-year/70% warranty structure, with conditions such as registration and connectivity described in the warranty documentation.
LG’s efficiency figure should not be placed in a simple league table against Tesla’s 97.5% solar-to-grid figure without explaining the test definitions. These may measure different parts of the energy path under different conditions.

- Confirm temperature limits, especially in cold climates. LG publishes separate charging and discharging temperature ranges and charging limitations below freezing.
- Verify the footprint, mounting method, clearances, flood exposure, and access requirements.
- Use an installer who can document current LG certification, parts availability, commissioning experience, and warranty support.
- Confirm what happens if internet service is unavailable, including backup operation, monitoring, firmware updates, and remote diagnostics.
New installation or retrofit?
New solar-plus-storage installation
For a new system, start by comparing complete designs rather than battery boxes. Powerwall 3 may simplify a Tesla-oriented design because its inverter is integrated. Enphase may be attractive when the array uses microinverters, particularly on a shaded or complex roof. LG can make sense when high capacity and multiple units are central to the project.
Ask each installer to quote the same solar production, backed-up circuits, battery reserve, controller, service-panel work, permits, and monitoring. Otherwise, the cheapest quote may simply omit necessary equipment.
Existing Enphase solar
The IQ Battery 5P is usually the cleanest first quote because it is designed for the Enphase Energy System. A Tesla or LG retrofit may still be possible, but the installer must model AC coupling, inverter compatibility, controls, rewiring, and utility approval.
Existing Tesla or third-party solar
Powerwall 3 is a natural candidate for Tesla-oriented equipment, but an existing system still requires a model-specific compatibility review. For a third-party string inverter, compare the current approved battery lists for Tesla, LG, and the inverter manufacturer. Do not rely on brand-level compatibility claims.
Whole-home backup versus critical-loads backup
“Whole-home backup” describes a system configuration, not an assurance that every appliance can run indefinitely. A contractor should provide a written load calculation that considers:
- central air conditioning and heat pumps;
- electric resistance heat and water heaters;
- well and sump pumps;
- refrigerators and freezers;
- gas furnaces with electronic controls;
- induction ranges;
- medical equipment;
- EV charging; and
- workshop or other high-demand equipment.
If the battery cannot safely supply all loads at once, the design may use a critical-loads panel, automatic load shedding, a soft-start device, or dedicated circuits. Have the installer identify exactly which circuits remain energized and which appliances are excluded.
How much battery capacity do you need?
Use capacity and output separately. A practical sizing process is:

- Request runtime estimates for light, typical, and heavy-load scenarios.
Approximate capacity matching
- One Powerwall 3: 13.5 kWh.
- One LG Home 5 or Home 8: 14.4 kWh.
- Three IQ Battery 5P units: 15 kWh.
- Four LG Home Series units: 57.6 kWh.
- Powerwall 3 plus three expansion units: 54 kWh, subject to system limits.
These figures are useful for an initial comparison, not a runtime promise. A battery advertised at 13.5 or 14.4 kWh will not necessarily deliver that amount to household loads after reserve settings, conversion losses, temperature effects, battery aging, and backup operating limits.

Performance criteria that matter
Continuous and surge output
Use continuous output to compare simultaneous loads and short-duration output to consider motor starting. Peak values are not directly comparable when their duration differs. Wiring, service equipment, backup controllers, and load-management settings can also become the bottleneck.
Efficiency
Efficiency is useful for solar self-consumption and time-of-use arbitrage, but published figures must be attributed accurately. Tesla’s 97.5% figure is labeled solar-to-grid efficiency. LG’s above-90% figure is stated as round-trip efficiency under its specified conditions. Enphase figures should be checked against the current product documentation and test basis before making a direct comparison.
Warranty
Compare more than the number of years:
- minimum retained capacity;
- cycle and throughput limits;
- operating-temperature requirements;
- registration and internet-connectivity conditions;
- labor, shipping, and replacement coverage;
- response process and service location; and
- whether a replacement receives a new warranty or only the remainder of the original term.
System architecture
AC-coupled systems can be useful for adding storage to existing solar. Integrated inverter systems can simplify a new design. Microinverter-based systems may offer a natural fit for complex roofs and existing Enphase equipment. The best architecture is the one that meets the electrical design and can be serviced locally.

1. New home with moderate electrical loads
Start with Powerwall 3 and LG Home 5/Home 8 quotes. Compare the complete installed price, output, solar integration, and local service coverage. Enphase remains worth considering if the array is designed around Enphase microinverters or if modular expansion is especially important.

2. Existing Enphase installation
Start with the IQ Battery 5P. Its ecosystem integration may reduce design complexity. Compare the cost of the number of units required, the IQ System Controller, and any panel work against alternative retrofit designs.
3. Home with a central heat pump or well pump
Favor Powerwall 3 or LG Home 8 as starting points because their single-unit output is higher than one IQ Battery 5P. Do not proceed based on output numbers alone: obtain a professional load calculation and ask about soft starts and automatic load shedding.
4. Wildfire, hurricane, or severe-weather region
Prioritize usable capacity, solar recharge during an outage, cold- or hot-weather limits, reserve settings, and local service. A battery sized only for overnight rate shifting may not cover a multi-day outage.
5. Time-of-use rates and short daily peaks
Compare round-trip efficiency, usable capacity, utility rules, export compensation, and software controls. A larger battery is not automatically more economical if the tariff provides little value for shifting energy.

Size the system around essential loads and the ability of solar to recharge the battery. This may require multiple battery units, load shedding, a generator, or all three. Do not assume a nominal 13.5- or 14.4-kWh battery will provide several days of whole-home power.
7. Future expansion
Enphase is attractive for smaller additions. LG and Tesla can also scale, but expansion limits, controller capacity, service size, solar limits, placement, and whether later units must be installed within a specified period all need to be confirmed in writing.
8. Tight garage or outdoor location
Compare dimensions, mounting, clearances, fire requirements, flood exposure, access, temperature, and local restrictions before choosing hardware. The battery that fits the electrical design may not fit the permitted installation location.
Pricing and ownership economics
Installed pricing is difficult to compare nationally because quotes may include different combinations of battery hardware, inverter equipment, controller, panel work, trenching, permits, solar work, monitoring, utility fees, and sales costs.

One current installer comparison reports directional installed ranges of approximately $8,500–$12,000 for Powerwall, $6,000–$8,000 per IQ Battery 5P, and $9,000–$13,000 for an LG RESU-style system. These are not manufacturer list prices, are not a universal quote for the current LG Home Series, and should be treated only as a dated reference point. See the comparison at NuWatt Energy, then obtain local proposals.
Ask every installer to separate:
- hardware and inverter equipment;
- backup gateway or controller;
- electrical-panel modifications;
- load-management devices;
- trenching and structural work;
- permits and utility fees;
- monitoring and commissioning; and
- labor and warranty-service coverage.
Compare both price per usable kWh and price per continuous kW. Also consider outage protection, time-of-use savings, export rules, local incentives, degradation, and the value of service support. A national payback period cannot be calculated responsibly without the homeowner’s tariff, consumption, solar production, ownership structure, incentives, and installation price.
Important edge cases
Extended outages
Ask whether the system can recharge from solar while the grid is down, how much reserve must remain, and how solar production is curtailed when the battery is full. “Indefinite backup” requires solar recovery, load management, sufficient storage, and sometimes a generator.
EV charging
An EV can consume more energy than a typical home battery during one charging session. Unless the system is specifically designed for it, do not assume battery backup is an economical way to charge an EV during an outage.
Cold climates
Battery charging and discharging can be temperature-dependent. Review the current installation specifications for the selected model, especially if the equipment will be outdoors or in an unconditioned garage.
Internet service
Ask what continues to operate without broadband: backup switching, local battery operation, monitoring, firmware updates, and remote diagnostics may not have identical requirements.
Fire and placement
Confirm local fire setbacks, indoor and outdoor approvals, garage restrictions, wall or floor mounting, ventilation, flood exposure, access, and utility or fire-department requirements. Rules differ by jurisdiction.
What to request from an installer
- Exact battery, inverter, gateway, controller, and expansion-unit model numbers.
- Usable capacity and continuous and surge output for the proposed configuration.
- A written load calculation and a list of backed-up circuits.
- Expected runtime under light, typical, and heavy loads.
- Whether solar can recharge the battery during an outage.
- Battery reserve settings and expected degradation assumptions.
- All equipment, permit, utility, panel, trenching, and labor costs.
- The current manufacturer warranty, including capacity, cycle, throughput, connectivity, and labor terms.
- Installer license, manufacturer certification, local permitting experience, and service process.
- Confirmation that the proposed system is approved for your utility and location.
Alternatives worth considering
FranklinWH, Generac PWRcell, Sonnen, SolarEdge Home Battery, and Anker SOLIX may also be relevant depending on generator integration, existing solar equipment, energy-management needs, availability, and local certification. They should not be treated as direct winners in this comparison without a separate model-by-model review.
