Aqara Presence Sensor FP300: Finally, a Battery-Powered Presence Sensor—with One Big Catch

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes, the Aqara Presence Multi-Sensor FP300 is genuinely battery-powered. It uses two replaceable CR2450 coin cells, with Aqara claiming up to three years of battery life in Zigbee mode and up to two years in Thread mode. That makes it considerably easier to install than a wired mmWave presence sensor.

The catch is important: it is wire-free, not infrastructure-free. Thread operation requires a compatible Thread Border Router and Matter Controller; Zigbee operation requires an Aqara hub. The FP300 is most compelling when running a cable would make installation awkward, but it is not automatically the best choice for every smart-home setup.

Why battery-powered presence sensing matters

Conventional PIR motion sensors are inexpensive and efficient, but they normally need movement to keep reporting activity. Someone sitting still at a desk, on a sofa, or in bed may eventually be treated as absent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

mmWave radar can detect very small movements, including the subtle movement associated with a stationary person. The usual disadvantage is power: many presence sensors need continuous USB or mains power. That limits them to locations near an outlet and can make ceiling, corner, hallway, rental-home, or finished-room installations unnecessarily difficult.

Driveway Alarm- 1/2 Mile Long Range Motion Sensor- 1 Receiver+2 Sensors
  • WIDE RANGE OF APPLICATIONS : The wireless weather resistant driveway alarm motion sensor can be used to monitor&protect your outdoor/indoor property. Such as driveway, front porch, gate, pool, garage, shed and etc. Great for home, business, and office. The sensor will work properly at all the seasons. Working temperature range from -30 to 150 degree Fahrenheit.
  • 1/2 MILE LONG WIRELESS TRANSMISSION RANGE : Both the motion sensor and plug-in receiver pick up alarm signals up to 1/2 mile away(actual range will vary depending on the local terrain), it is a great solution even you have a large perimeter or property to monitor. The system adopts improved wireless transmission technology(FSK+FHSS) to avoid the wireless signal interference from other devices.
  • 50-FT WIDE MOTION DETECTION RANGE : The motion sensor will detect moving people or vehicles from 35 feet to 50 feet in front of it. Improved motion detection chip and detection angle to reduce the false alarms from dead leaves/small animals/sunlight/wind/temperature changes and etc. It has 2 adjustable sensitivities( Low=35ft; High=50ft), ideal for driveways, walking paths, yard, garage, gate, pool and anywhere of your outdoor/indoor property you want to be alerted.
  • PLUG&PLAY,SUPER EASY TO INSTALL : Power on the motion sensor by 3pcs AA 1.5V Alkaline batteries(the package does not include the batteries) and plug the receiver into the outlet, here we go. The unit has been programmed before shipped, place the sensors to walls, fence posts, trees, or any other surface, the installation time can be as little as a few minutes.
  • FULLY EXPANDBLE SYSTEM - The unit includes one plug-in receiver and two motion sensors. Expandable up to 32 sensors and unlimited receivers for complete coverage of your outdoor/indoor property. 4 volume levels adjustment and 35 optional melodies. Match different melody with different sensors around your property to differentiate where motion is being detected.

The FP300 addresses that installation problem with replaceable batteries. You can mount it on a wall, in a corner, on a ceiling, or place it on a desk without routing a permanent power cable.

What the FP300 actually detects

Aqara calls the FP300 a 5-in-1 presence multi-sensor. That label should not be read as five separate environmental instruments. The device combines:

  1. Presence detection using 60 GHz mmWave radar.
  2. Motion detection using PIR infrared sensing.
  3. Temperature measurement.
  4. Humidity measurement.
  5. Ambient-light measurement.

In practical terms, the radar is the reason it can continue to identify a seated person, while PIR provides conventional motion detection. Temperature, humidity, and illuminance add useful conditions for automations. For example, a light can turn on only when someone is present and the room is dark, while ventilation can respond to humidity rather than occupancy alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Aqara also describes AI-based adaptive sensitivity, interference recognition, and spatial learning. Those are Aqara’s claims and configuration features, not independently verified performance measurements. The manual acknowledges that false alerts can occur during initial learning or when the room contains sources of interference.

Battery life: promising, but not guaranteed

Aqara rates the FP300 for:

  • Up to three years in Zigbee mode.
  • Up to two years in Thread mode.

These are laboratory estimates, not a guaranteed ownership result. Aqara’s stated test scenario involved approximately 240 daily data points, four hours of presence, and the environmental sensors active.

Real-world battery life can be shorter when the sensor reports more frequently, covers a larger area, operates in a busy room, experiences weak or unstable connectivity, or uses more intensive sensing. Thread also has the lower published battery estimate.

The batteries are two replaceable CR2450 cells. They are not rechargeable, and CR2450 is not the same size as the more common CR2032. Check the battery marking before buying replacements.

Thread/Matter or Zigbee?

This is the FP300’s most important buying decision. The two modes are not simply different labels for the same experience.

Thread/Matter Zigbee
Additional infrastructure Thread Border Router and Matter Controller Aqara hub and Aqara Home
Third-party Matter connection Directly over Thread Through an Aqara hub’s Matter bridge
Published battery estimate Up to two years Up to three years
Aqara-specific controls More limited and ecosystem-dependent Broadest configuration options
Best suited to Existing Matter households Aqara users prioritising battery life and tuning

Choose Thread/Matter if you already have the required Thread and Matter infrastructure and want the sensor connected directly to Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, Home Assistant, or Homey. The exact features exposed vary by platform. Aqara’s compatibility information also identifies some illumination-related behaviour as unavailable in Alexa.

Choose Zigbee if you own, or are prepared to buy, an Aqara hub and want the longest claimed battery life plus the deepest Aqara configuration. Aqara’s Zigbee mode supports controls such as radar-range adjustment, absence-delay settings, reporting-frequency controls, sensor enable/disable options, and Aqara spatial-learning features.

Using Zigbee does not prevent broader smart-home integration. An Aqara hub can expose the device through Matter bridging, but that is different from pairing the FP300 directly to a Matter ecosystem over Thread.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume switching protocols later is frictionless. Aqara’s manual says to remove the device, hold the reset button for five seconds, select the new protocol during pairing, and set it up again. Changing protocols clears the device’s settings and data.

Detection range and field of view

Aqara specifies a maximum detection range of 6 metres and a 120-degree field of view. Treat those as maximum or ideal figures rather than a guarantee that every point in a room will be equally reliable.

Actual coverage depends on mounting height, angle, furniture, walls, room geometry, reflective surfaces, and the direction in which a person is facing. A six-metre straight-line radar specification is not the same as reliable coverage across a complicated room.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where to install it

The FP300 supports desktop, wall, corner, and ceiling placement. Aqara’s guidance is a useful starting point:

  • For broad coverage, mount it around 2 metres high and tilt it slightly downward.
  • For side-wall or corner mounting, approximately 1.4 to 1.8 metres can help cover seated and standing occupants.
  • In a corner, face the sensor toward the centre of the room to reduce blind spots.
  • Where possible, orient it toward the front of a person. This improves the chance of detecting subtle movement such as breathing.
  • Use screws rather than adhesive or magnetic mounting when installing above 2 metres.

Avoid positioning the sensor directly beside or opposite air-conditioning vents, fans, air purifiers, large mirrors, extensive glass, or large reflective metal surfaces. Air movement and reflective materials can contribute to false presence reports or delayed absence detection.

Allow the sensor time to adapt after installation or relocation. In Zigbee mode, Aqara recommends manually running AI Spatial Background Learning with the room unoccupied for about 30 seconds. Matter mode performs spatial learning automatically according to the manual.

How to set it up

  1. Install the Aqara Home app.
  2. Remove the battery insulation tab and power on the FP300.
  3. Wait for the blue indicator to begin flashing slowly.
  4. In Aqara Home, open the Home tab and tap + in the upper-right corner.
  5. Select the FP300 and follow the pairing prompts.
  6. For Matter over Thread, scan the Matter code on the device or in the manual from the Matter app you want to use.
  7. For Zigbee, select the Zigbee option, allow any required firmware download, and choose the Aqara hub to which the sensor will be bound.

Add the sensor to Aqara Home first and update its firmware from the device settings before relying on it for important automations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reset and recovery

  • Network reset/pairing mode: hold the reset button for five seconds until the indicator flashes rapidly.
  • Factory reset: press the reset button ten times quickly.
  • A normal reset clears network settings but does not delete local data.
  • A factory reset clears network settings and deletes local and cloud data.
  • Pairing mode times out after approximately ten minutes; trigger it again if necessary.

Build automations around sustained absence

The FP300 can detect absence quickly. That is useful for responsiveness but risky if an automation immediately turns off lights, heating, cooling, or equipment the moment the sensor reports no presence.

Use an absence-delay timer in the sensor or a condition such as “no presence for a specified duration.” Avoid stacking delays accidentally: a five-second sensor delay plus a ten-second automation delay produces about fifteen seconds in total.

1byone Driveway Alarm Wireless Outside, 1 Receiver 2 Infrared Sensors
  • Wireless Motion Sensor Alarm: A Motion detector is essential in a home security system; It can detect movement in the surrounding areas: driveway, front porch, gate, home, shed, office, walkway, swimming pool, etc, and trigger alerts to the linked receiver; It provides an added level of security and safety to your property and loved ones
  • Long Distance Wireless: Communication ranges up to 1000ft/300m from each sensor to the receiver; Cars, people, and animals can be detected within 24ft/8m of each sensor’s angled eye; Think of this system as your long-range doorbell
  • Two Work Modes & Three Alert Options to Choose: The receiver can work not only as a doorbell but an alarm; Select one of three ways of being alerted (Sound/LED Flash/Sound and LED Flash) to alert visitors, scare off unwanted intruders, or even know when your children have accessed restricted areas
  • Easy to Install & DIY: This system is fully expandable, with plug-and-play sensors that can be set up within minutes; Pair each receiver with up to 5 sensors for full coverage of your property; The sensors can be mounted to walls, fence posts, trees, or any other surface, providing extra layers of security and home safety
  • Fully Expandable System: Our wireless driveway alarm sensor is fully expandable; Simply place your motion sensor or multiple sensors (expandable up to five sensors) anywhere on your property and when a person, vehicle, or large animal moves within 24 feet of the sensor’s angled eye, a signal will be sent to the receiver that will chime in your home just like a long-range doorbell

Practical automation patterns include:

  • Turn lights on when presence is detected and illuminance is below a chosen threshold.
  • Turn lights or HVAC off only after sustained absence.
  • Start cooling when presence is detected and temperature exceeds a chosen threshold.
  • Use humidity to control ventilation or a dehumidifier.
  • Use light level as a condition instead of treating presence alone as a reason to switch lighting on.

Aqara illustrates examples using 400 lux for lighting and 28°C for cooling. Those are examples, not universal settings; room use, climate, daylight, and personal comfort should determine your thresholds.

What the FP300 does not prove

The official material establishes presence detection, motion sensing, environmental measurements, adjustable detection range in Zigbee mode, and Matter/Thread and Zigbee connectivity. It does not establish that the sensor provides the same multi-zone mapping or multi-person tracking that buyers may associate with advanced wired mmWave products.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is also no independent evidence here establishing average battery life, a false-positive rate, detection latency in different room layouts, performance through furniture or glass, or temperature and humidity accuracy. The FP300 should not be treated as a calibrated weather or HVAC instrument without independent measurements.

Feature exposure also depends on the platform. Matter improves cross-platform compatibility, but it does not guarantee that every Aqara-specific radar, reporting, absence, or spatial-learning control will appear in Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, Home Assistant, or Homey.

Who should buy the FP300?

Buy it if you need presence sensing where a USB cable would be inconvenient, want to detect someone sitting still, and value one device that also reports temperature, humidity, and light. It is especially attractive if you already have an Aqara hub or a suitable Thread/Matter setup.

Choose Zigbee plus an Aqara hub when battery life and configuration depth matter most.

Choose Thread/Matter when you already own the necessary infrastructure and prefer direct cross-platform integration, while accepting that some Aqara-specific controls may be unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Be cautious if you expect a completely hub-free product, need guaranteed multi-zone or person-counting features, cannot tolerate placement and calibration work, or have a room dominated by airflow and reflective surfaces.

Choose a wired presence sensor instead when an outlet is nearby and your priorities are maximum reporting frequency, continuous power, advanced room mapping, or more continuous radar behaviour. Aqara’s FP2 is the more relevant wired alternative for readers who specifically want those characteristics; the FP300’s advantage is installation flexibility.

Verdict

The Aqara FP300 makes battery-powered presence sensing practical rather than merely clever on paper. Its replaceable CR2450 batteries remove the biggest installation objection to mmWave sensing, while its temperature, humidity, and light readings make it useful for more than occupancy alone.

But the headline needs a footnote: the FP300 is not a standalone sensor. You still need either Aqara Zigbee infrastructure or a Thread Border Router and Matter Controller. For the longest claimed battery life and fullest control, Zigbee is the stronger choice. For households already built around Matter, Thread offers the cleaner route, provided the platform exposes the features you actually need.
