Dyson’s Spot+ScrubTM Ai is an unusually ambitious robot vacuum and mop. It uses green-spectrum illumination, an HD camera and software-based recognition to look for visible or hard-to-see messes, then sends a wet roller back for repeated cleaning. The idea is more advanced than a conventional robot mop, but the results are not magic: independent testing found that fresh everyday spills can be handled well, while dried, sticky, greasy or heavily pigmented stains may still need a person with a cloth, cleaner or scrub brush.
That makes the Spot+Scrub Ai a potentially excellent maintenance cleaner for homes with mostly sealed hard floors, children or pets. It is a much less convincing purchase for carpet-heavy homes or anyone expecting a robot to replace manual stain treatment.
What is the Dyson Spot+Scrub Ai?
The Spot+Scrub Ai is Dyson’s first robot designed to combine dry vacuuming with wet floor washing. It is a different proposition from the company’s earlier 360 Vis Nav, which was primarily a dry robot vacuum.

Dyson’s intended three-stage process is:
- Detect: green illumination and an AI-assisted camera inspect the floor.
- React: the robot adjusts its cleaning response for the detected debris or spill.
- Check: it revisits the area to determine whether the mess remains.
Dyson says the system can recognize nearly 200 household substances or objects and make up to 15 passes over tougher spots. Those are manufacturer claims, not guarantees that every stain will be correctly identified or removed.
The important distinction is that this is visual recognition, not chemical analysis. The camera estimates what a mess may be from characteristics such as colour, shape, size and reflectivity. It does not chemically prove that a mark is coffee, grease, detergent or another substance.

How the stain detection works
The green light is intended to make dirt and stains more visible than they would be under ordinary room lighting. The front-facing HD camera then analyses what it sees and the robot chooses a cleaning response.
For a suitable mess, that may mean slowing down, applying the wet roller, making several passes and checking the area again. Dyson specifies up to 15 passes for difficult spots, but that is a maximum rather than a normal or guaranteed behaviour.
A detected-stain marker in the app or on a map should also be treated as evidence that the robot has noticed something—not proof that the floor is clean. Recognition and removal are separate problems. A camera can identify a dark or shiny patch while the roller lacks the pressure, detergent contact or dwell time needed to lift it.
Does it really remove stains?
The honest answer is: sometimes, particularly when the spill is fresh and sitting on a smooth sealed floor. It is not a fully autonomous replacement for manual cleaning.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute| Mess | Reasonable expectation | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Crumbs, dust and tracked-in dirt | Good fit for routine robot vacuuming | These are ordinary vacuuming tasks, not proof of advanced stain removal. |
| Fresh liquid spill | Potentially useful if the volume is modest | A large spill may still require immediate manual removal. |
| Ketchup | Relatively good results in one independent test | Results vary with dryness, surface texture and quantity. |
| Mustard | Inconsistent results in testing | It could smear or leave residue. |
| Dried food | Limited expectation | Dried residue often needs dwell time, scraping or hand pressure. |
| Grease, oil or syrup | Do not assume reliable removal | These may require an appropriate cleaner and manual treatment. |
| Pet urine, vomit or raw-meat residue | Manual cleaning recommended | Do not treat a household robot as a biohazard or sanitation solution. |
TechRadar’s independent review found that some stains were smeared or better handled with a damp cloth. Homes & Gardens’ testing reported relatively good ketchup results but weaker mustard performance, along with occasional repeated-cleaning loops when foam appeared.
The practical conclusion is modest but useful: the robot may reduce how often you perform small spot cleans. It should not be trusted to make every stubborn mark disappear unattended.
How the wet roller works
The robot uses a microfiber wet roller supplied through what Dyson calls a 12-point hydration system. Dyson says the roller is cleaned on every rotation so that fresh water reaches the floor, while dirty water is extracted rather than continuously redistributed by a saturated pad.
After cleaning, the dock washes the roller with water heated to approximately 140°F and dries it with approximately 113°F hot air. This is more sophisticated than leaving a damp mop pad sitting in a tray.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHowever, “self-cleaning” does not mean maintenance-free. The owner still needs to deal with the dirty-water tank, filters, roller assembly, water filter, dry-debris bin and any odour caused by wet residue. Dyson recommends washing the filters at least monthly, washing the dock’s dirty-water tank monthly and replacing the water filter every 12 months. Use only cleaning solution specified for the machine rather than adding arbitrary floor chemicals.

Which floors can it clean?
Dyson says the Spot+Scrub Ai vacuums hard floors, carpets and rugs, while washing sealed hard floors including sealed wood, tile, laminate, ceramic, vinyl and linoleum.
The wet roller lifts when the robot moves onto carpet, and Dyson says the dry roller retracts to reduce the risk of wet smearing. Carpet suction can be boosted by up to four times, according to the manufacturer.
These qualifications matter:
- Sealed wood is not every wood floor. Unsealed, waxed, damaged or moisture-sensitive flooring may not be suitable. Check the flooring manufacturer’s instructions.
- This is not a carpet shampooer. It is intended for routine dry vacuuming on carpet.
- Rugs remain a possible trouble spot. Long pile, loose edges, tassels and unusual transitions can create navigation or entanglement problems.
- The wet-cleaning value rises with hard-floor coverage. A home dominated by carpet will use less of the feature that makes this Dyson unusual.
Navigation and object avoidance
The Spot+Scrub Ai combines LiDAR, a front-facing HD camera, green-spectrum illumination, dual-line laser sensing and drop and edge-follow sensors. Dyson says it can recognize common furniture and smaller objects such as shoes, socks and cables.
In real homes, object recognition should not be confused with perfect avoidance. Cables, pet toys, dark objects, reflective surfaces, clutter beside walls, low furniture, thresholds and wet food can all create edge cases. Stairs and drop-offs are handled by sensors, but owners should still inspect the first mapping run and use no-go areas where necessary.
Camera-based recognition may also behave differently in unusual lighting or around transparent and highly reflective objects. Remove sharp objects and large solids before a wet run, and do not assume the robot will safely understand every pet accident or food spill.
Vacuuming performance beyond the headline feature
A stain-seeking system should not distract from ordinary robot-vacuum questions. Buyers should consider how well the machine collects hair, crumbs, dust and pet litter; whether it reaches edges and corners; how much debris remains around chair legs; and whether carpet cleaning is sufficient for their household.
Dyson lists these specifications:
| Specification | Manufacturer figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum suction | Up to 18,000 Pa | A specification, not a direct comparison of real-world cleaning performance. |
| Runtime | Up to 200 minutes | Varies by mode, flooring, navigation and dock returns. |
| Full charge | Approximately 3 hours | Actual cleaning cycles may include charging interruptions. |
| Robot size | 14.6 × 14.7 × 4.3 inches | Check clearance beneath furniture and around thresholds. |
| Robot weight | 14.5 pounds | Relevant when manually relocating the machine. |
Do not use the 18,000 Pa figure alone to predict carpet pickup. Brush design, airflow, navigation, hair handling and how thoroughly the robot covers a room matter too.
The dock is capable—and large
The dock charges the robot, empties dry debris, refills clean water, collects dirty water, washes and dries the wet roller, and stores dry debris for up to 100 days according to Dyson.
It is also a substantial piece of furniture. Dyson lists approximate dock dimensions of 20 inches long, 17.3 inches wide and 17.9 inches high. Leave access around it for removing tanks and bins rather than pushing it tightly beneath furniture.
Ownership still includes:
- emptying or rinsing the dirty-water tank;
- cleaning filters and inspecting the roller and brush bar;
- replacing rollers, filters, side sweepers and the water filter;
- monitoring odours from wet debris or dirty water;
- keeping the dock accessible and the robot’s route clear.
The dock automates repetitive work; it does not eliminate appliance care.

App, setup and privacy
The MyDyson app is required for intelligent features and setup, including mapping, room-specific cleaning, no-go areas, schedules and cleaning-time estimates. A basic physical start may be possible, but the product’s most useful controls depend on the connected experience.
Early coverage praised the hardware concept while criticising aspects of the app experience, so app usability is a significant part of the buying decision rather than a minor extra. Room naming, map editing, targeted cleaning, notifications and performance after Wi-Fi interruptions should all be considered.
Dyson’s user guide says maps, schedules and Wi-Fi information are associated with the owner’s MyDyson account. Another person can be added as a user. Removing the robot from the app deletes the account association, while holding the Home button for 10 seconds with the robot off the dock erases stored personal data and returns it to factory settings. Automatic software updates can be enabled in the app.

Price and value
U.S. Dyson product pages showed materially different prices during the research period: $1,199.99 on one page variant and $849.99 on another discounted listing. Because Dyson promotions and page variants change, treat those figures as price signals rather than a permanent MSRP. Check the live checkout price, warranty terms and included accessories before buying.
At roughly $1,200, the Spot+Scrub Ai asks buyers to pay a substantial premium for visual stain detection, a wet roller and Dyson’s dock and support ecosystem. At a much lower sale price, the concept becomes easier to justify for a hard-floor household that will actually use targeted cleaning.
The two-year limited warranty shown on Dyson’s U.S. product page is worth confirming at purchase. Early reviews cannot establish the long-term reliability of the pump, dock, roller, software or water-handling system.
How it compares with cheaper alternatives
| Alternative | Why consider it | What it does not provide |
|---|---|---|
| Shark PowerDetect 2-in-1 with NeverTouch Base | A lower-cost route to automated vacuuming, mopping and self-emptying. | Dyson’s visual stain-detection concept and wet-roller design. |
| Shark PowerDetect 2-in-1 with NeverTouch Pro Base | More dock automation at a price observed below Dyson’s full-price listing. | The Dyson’s targeted stain-recognition system. |
| Dreame Aqua10 Ultra Roller | Another roller-based wet-cleaning design with strong stated suction and hot-water dock washing. | Dyson’s ecosystem and specific stain-seeking workflow; some carpet settings require manual app activation. |
| Roborock Qrevo CurvX | Lower-profile design, broad smart-home integration and general vacuum-and-mop automation. | A dedicated Dyson-style stain-detection proposition. |
These products are not automatically “better” without comparable testing. They are better fits for readers who prioritise price, general automation, carpet behaviour or smart-home integration over Dyson’s stain-targeting idea.

Who should buy the Spot+Scrub Ai?
It is most compelling for:
- homes with mostly sealed hard floors;
- households with children or pets creating frequent small spills;
- people who dislike daily mopping but will maintain a dock;
- buyers who value targeted cleaning more than maximum carpet performance;
- shoppers who find it at a substantial discount.
It is a poor fit for:
- homes dominated by carpet;
- buyers seeking the strongest carpet pickup per dollar;
- people who clean every spill manually and will not use targeted robot cleaning;
- homes with unsealed or moisture-sensitive floors;
- rooms where the large dock cannot be installed conveniently;
- anyone unwilling to clean tanks, filters and rollers;
- buyers expecting dried, greasy or hazardous messes to disappear without intervention.
Practical ownership advice
- Verify that every wet-cleaning surface is sealed and approved for moisture.
- Run mapping with floors reasonably clear of cables, toys and sharp objects.
- Use a small, inconspicuous flooring area for an initial wet-cleaning test.
- Use targeted cleaning for a known spill rather than waiting for the next whole-home cycle.
- Remove large solids and sharp debris before a wet run.
- Use only Dyson-specified cleaning solution.
- Rinse the dirty-water tank regularly even if the app does not prompt you.
- Keep firmware current through the MyDyson app.
- Treat pet urine, vomit, raw-meat residue and similar contamination as manual-cleaning jobs first.
Verdict
The Dyson Spot+Scrub Ai is a genuinely distinctive robot vacuum and mop, not merely a conventional mop with an “AI” label. Its camera, green illumination and repeated-pass system can make routine hard-floor messes easier to manage, and the wet roller and wash-and-dry dock are useful pieces of engineering.
But the core promise needs careful interpretation. The robot recognises visual patterns and adapts its cleaning; it does not chemically identify stains or guarantee removal. Fresh spills and everyday residue are its most credible targets. Dried food, mustard-like pigments, grease, thick sauces, grout, textured flooring and biological messes remain firmly within the limits of autonomous cleaning.
Buy it for automated hard-floor maintenance and targeted fresh-mess cleaning, preferably on sale. Wait if you want clearer long-term reliability evidence. Choose a cheaper robot if general vacuuming and mopping matter more than stain detection. Keep a conventional vacuum, cloth and appropriate floor cleaner for serious stains.
