The right choice depends on the hole saw’s construction, the arbor it must fit, pilot length, and the material being cut. For bi-metal hole saws, Starrett recommends an HSS pilot; for carbide-tipped saws, it recommends a carbide-tipped or solid-carbide pilot. Check your saw and arbor specifications before replacing a bit.
How to choose a hole saw pilot bit
Use these four checks to narrow the choice. They reflect manufacturer guidance and product specifications, not a head-to-head precision test.
- Match the pilot to the saw. Starrett recommends high-speed steel (HSS) pilots for bi-metal hole saws, and carbide-tipped or solid-carbide pilots for carbide-tipped hole saws. See Starrett’s hole saw accessories.
- Confirm arbor compatibility. A 1/4-inch shank is common on some replacement pilots, but it does not guarantee fit with a proprietary quick-change or other arbor system. Check the arbor maker’s fit qualifications and pilot requirements.
- Check pilot length against cutting depth. On a deep-cut hole saw, the pilot must extend far enough to guide the saw before the cutting edge engages the workpiece. Compare the pilot length and saw depth in the product specifications.
- Match the intended work material. Choose a pilot and hole-saw system specified for the material you are cutting; do not infer suitability from shank size or a general-purpose label alone.
Which pilot drill fits my hole saw?
Bi-metal hole saws
Start with an HSS pilot and verify that its shank and length fit your arbor and saw. IRWIN’s catalog lists replacement pilots and arbors with differing chuck diameters and compatible hole-saw diameter ranges, so check the exact assembly rather than assuming that one replacement fits every arbor. Carbide-tipped hole saws
Starrett recommends a carbide-tipped or solid-carbide pilot for carbide-tipped saws. For a specific example, DEWALT lists its DAH9334MMPB carbide-tipped pilot for hard materials such as concrete block and fiber cement. DEWALT also excludes proprietary arbor systems that do not use standard 1/4-inch-shank pilots; confirm fit on the product page and with your arbor. DEWALT DAH9334MMPB.

Standard 1/4-inch replacement pilots
DEWALT lists model DAH99314PB as a 1/4-inch pilot drill and specifies compatibility with rapid-load and traditional non-quick-change arbors, except proprietary systems that do not use standard 1/4-inch pilots. DEWALT describes its 135-degree split point this way: “The 135 degree split point easily penetrates steel and minimizes walking.” That is the manufacturer’s product claim, not an independently measured accuracy result. Power Change systems
Bosch describes its Power Change HSS-Co pilot drill as guiding the hole saw into position and specifies it for the Power Change keyless arbor. Treat it as a system-specific part; do not assume it fits an unrelated arbor. Bosch Power Change HSS-Co pilot drill.

When to replace the pilot or the arbor
If the pilot is damaged or does not match your saw, first determine whether the arbor accepts a replacement pilot. If the arbor itself is damaged or incompatible, select a complete compatible arbor assembly. Verify the hole-saw diameter range, chuck or shank size, and pilot type before ordering.
Greenlee model 38507 is listed for hole saws from 9/16 to 1-3/16 inches and includes a replaceable HSS pilot. Greenlee lists a carbide-tipped pilot separately for use with carbide-grit hole saws. These are model-specific specifications, not universal arbor dimensions. Greenlee model 38507.

What “precision” claims do—and do not—tell you
A split point or a manufacturer’s description of reduced walking can help explain a design, but it does not establish that a pilot is the most accurate choice across materials, saws, and arbors. The available product information does not provide an independent comparison, a quantified reduction in walking, or a durability ranking. Choose by verified compatibility and application rather than an unsupported universal “best” claim.
